The Editor What do we do with our spare time? Do we get out enough and join in with things - get involved with local events and clubs? When we first started SpotLight it was intended to be used by people to find local groups and events to attend. You will find lists of clubs and societies at the front of the magazine - normally page 4 - and upcoming events in the central pages. Why not try something new as Spring approaches?

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Longing for a Home The sheer human misery involved in the ongoing migration to Europe of many thousands of people is something that most of us find difficult to comprehend. A headline declaring that the influx may exceed three million people may hardly register as we read a newspaper, but the image of a single lifeless infant being carried ashore in Greece has the power to convey the immense human tragedy that is unfolding. Driven out of their homes by violence, despair, famine or the desire to find a better way of life, everyone included in those headline numbers carries a burden of personal misery that cannot be weighed. It is interesting to observe the response of others to the plight of the migrants. Some are willing to give shelter to refugees fleeing from brutal civil war, but don’t want to see an influx of those who are simply seeking a better life. Others feel resentment that some of the refugees are picking and choosing where they will accept the refuge they seek. The German Chancellor said her country was open to all who wished to come - a most noble and compassionate invitation - only to find that the response exceeded the ability of the country to manage it.
Other nations, each with their own concerns, have erected barriers because they are unable, or unwilling, to assist. This vast human need is faced with an equally vast human inability, or unwillingness, to meet it. The physical distress of millions of migrants provides a graphic picture of the deep spiritual need of the entire human race. As you read this article you may be sitting in the warmth, comfort and security that all those migrants dream of, and you may think there are few things that you have in common with them. But suppose every one of those unfortunate people actually attained all the prosperity and comfort that they seek. Even if that impossible dream came true, each one would still have their greatest need unfulfilled, and perhaps that is also true of you. The Lord Jesus said “a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth … all these things do the nations of the world seek after … but rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Luke 12.15, 30, 31). You may be settled and secure in this world, happy to have a valid passport that declares your national identity. But, by nature, and on account of our personal

sins, we are “alienated from the life of God” (Ephesians 4.18). That is why we need a Saviour, One who can deal with the true need of our souls. The invitation given by the Lord Jesus, as He viewed with tender compassion the need of a world ruined by sin, is wonderful - “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11.28). That invitation is not limited by race, religion or wealth. It is for “all”, and that means the Saviour’s words are for you. This is not a well-meant invitation that proves impossible to fulfil. “He is able to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him” (Hebrews 7.25). Funds to give migrants a new life are very limited but, in His sacrificial death, the Lord Jesus paid in full the cost to save repentant sinners and give them new life and the assurance of Heaven as their home. The Bible says of those whose faith rests in Christ alone for salvation “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God” (Ephesians 2.19). PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES This will be my final column before the Scottish Parliament dissolves on 24 March ahead of the elections on the 5th May. As the final weeks approach, I’ve been reflecting on the many issues I have dealt with, and the many fantastic things I’ve had the pleasure to be involved in over the last 12 months, and indeed since the last election in 2011. I want to thank everyone who has contacted me over the last five years, whether that is to share your opinion on a specific issue or attending one of my surgeries to seek help with an individual problem. I am very proud to be your MSP, to work hard on your behalf and it is a huge honour to represent Moray in the Scottish Parliament. I hope that after the 5th May, I will be back writing the next column!
I have recently been involved in Modern Language sessions with pupils at Moray Secondary Schools. I am fortunate to be bi-lingual and able to speak fluent German and the sessions with school pupils are basically about the opportunities that has created for me in my life, including several years working as a radio journalist in Austria. Having an additional language has opened many doors for me and provided me with opportunities that I would otherwise not have had. I hope that with my own language experiences I can help to motivate young people to continue and progress their language learning. It is great to see a good number of young folk really enthusiastic about learning languages and I hope the sessions will encourage more to keep at this very useful skill. GreenThumb
Does My Mower Need Sharpened ? Chances are – yes. I know many of you dutifully take your petrol machines into the local garden machinery place each spring. They will probably change the oil, filters, plugs and sharpen the blades ready for another season. Some do this themselves. I also know however that many machines are long overdue a service. You may find it’s getting harder to start, maybe not, but what is inevitable is that most lawnmower blades only manage a season before the blade is dulled. If you have an electric or flymo type machine, the same applies. On smaller, lighter machines, often a better option is just to change the blade, which at £10-£20 might actually prove cheaper than sharpening. Also, there are many lightweight alloys used in some blades nowadays, which don’t tend to keep an edge as well as heavier metals. When the blade loses its’ sharpness, it doesn’t make a clean cut through the grass sward. There are some obvious signs that this might be a problem. It may seem to struggle to give a decent cut at all; there may be issues with clumping and leaving material on the lawn, particularly when the grass has some wet in it (much of the time in our climate). Less understood perhaps is that a blunt blade will often end up tearing the grass leaf, rather than providing a clean cut. If you examine a few blades of grass, you will be able to see either a straight clean cut at the top, or a rather ragged, torn top. The result of a poor cut is bruising to the grass leaf, which causes the tip to turn brown, as it has been damaged. The overall effect can be to leave the grass with poor colour. Instead of an even, healthy green, it has a tinge of brown throughout. A ragged cut to the material of any plant provides a weak point, making it susceptible to diseases and

moulds. You hear the same advice given for pruning and hedging shears. My top tip for this month is to get your mower down to the workshop. If you wait until Easter weekend like everyone else, it will sit in a long queue, and you might not get it back for some weeks Incidentally, I heard an interesting question on QI last year. Q. In the UK, what travels north at 8 miles per day? A. Spring (I think the actual measure used was the opening of daffodils, but don’t quote me on that.) Something else of interest; GreenThumb celebrates it’s 30th Anniversary this year. I think (and so does the industry), they’ve done very well to start from scratch back then in North Wales, to grow to be the largest lawncare company in Europe, with over 500,000 customers, and still growing. I cant take much credit though, as we’re quite a small franchise (award-winning nonetheless), with around 1,000 customers round here. For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area.
