The Editor

We always like to be positive here at SpotLight. You won’t find horror stories and tales of woe within these pages. We feel that there is plenty enough of that on the TV and in the papers. So our aim here is to be supportive and encouraging to local people to get involved with local activities and to play a part in your community. By engaging with our neighbours this is how we find a real place in society, not by pulling others down.

Pastoral letter and Church Meetings Ch ri st i a n Uni t y – An i d ea l or God’s Plan This year, the week of Christian unity started with the theme “Changed by the Servant Christ”. A devout Monk from Pluscarden Abbey aptly pointed out that we need to be open to change as much as to service if we are to follow where Jesus the master leads us. There is also a sense of privilege in being called to the role of servant for Christ, and, in service of others, we find victory. On that theme the WW2 German Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer advocated the need to serve one another to engage in victorious living. This surely echoes the text from 1st Corinthians...CH 15 - Thanks be to God who gives us the Victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Paradoxically, it was not through

power and wealth that the Church in Poland thrived, during and after the years of Communism. The Church in Poland thrived more through adversity and service... indeed service to an atheist state. A state that worked like a hammer on the Church. But the Church is an anvil that has worn out many a hammer, and will continue to do so today, until the appointed time when Christ shall return in glory. It is interesting that the Church is united more in adversity and at prayer than any other occasions. This unity is not a kind of sameness. The Churches in Poland; Catholic, Orthodox and Reformed relied on solidarity to carry them through the times of trial. And more recently in Iraq, we find Syriac, Orthodox,

Catholic and Reformed Christians holding together in martyrdom and adversity with precious little support from western Churches. And yet in Baghdad, in spite of daily extremist attacks, bombings, murders and threats, the small Church is serving the new Iraq by brokering peace links and building civil society across the Islamic sectarian divide of Sunis and Shias. Blessed are the peacemakers. So we pray for our fellow Christians in Iraq, under persecution today and for the foreseeable future.

Parliament Blog & Tides Picture by Maggie Grigor, Copyright

“ Parliament Blog ” I had occasion recently to have a muscle injury treated by a physiotherapist while working in Edinburgh. In the obligatory small talk I was asked where I lived, on saying Elgin the physio - who lived in the Berwick area - informed me that he was visiting Elgin that very weekend. The weekend arrived and I had taken my older son down to Boroughbriggs to watch the Elgin City game, only to spot my physiotherapist playing on the right wing in defence for visiting Berwick Rangers! After being spotted by the physio in the enclosure and Elgin giving Berwick a pretty sore 4-0 beating I am now a little worried about visiting the physio again for fear of retribution!

It’s Six Nations time again! Having enjoyed playing rugby in my youth it continues to be my favourite sport and, as usual, I’ve done my best to try and work around the various Six Nations games and, as usual, with varied success at keeping the two hour slots free in the diary. I think one of the reasons I like the game so much is that there is space in a rugby time for people to contribute regardless of whether they are tall, short, big or small, making it a pretty inclusive game compared to other team sports. It’s also good to see two teams who can walk off the pitch at the end and leave any rivalry behind, stay polite with the officials and after all of it get some food and a drink and a laugh together at the end. A great example for youngsters and in Moray we have some excellent rugby coaching to get the best from the sporting talent coming through our schools. With all that effort going in I am very hopeful of Scotland producing better and better teams

at the highest levels of competition.

recipe

Chef’s Confidential Swiss Onion Tart Before buying the Knockomie in 1987, Gavin spent time living in Zurich in Switzerland as part of his training and this tart is typical of a Spring dish served in the mountains for lunch or supper. By omitting the bacon it is a great vegetarian dish too! Pastry 250g Plain Flour 1 egg 125g Soft Butter approximately 4 dessert spoons cold water

Pre heat the oven to 220ÂşC

Filling 50g Butter 600g thinly sliced onions 150g smoked back bacon 4 eggs 300ml Double cream 1 tablespoon Olive Oil 100g Gruyere Cheese Grated Salt and Pepper

Method 1. Place the flour in a large clean bowl or onto a clean work surface, make a well and place the egg and soft butter in the centre and gradually bring together all the ingredients by rubbing between your fingers. 2. As they all come together add the water gradually to bind it and form it into a ball. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge. 3. To make the filling, place the butter into a frying pan over a medium heat to melt. 4. Add all the sliced onions to the pan, and cook gently to soften, carefully making sure that they don't burn. 5. When softened remove from the pan and place on a plate to cool slightly. 6. Add oil to the frying pan. Slice the bacon into thin strips and cook in the pan until golden and crisp. Remove from the pan and place on kitchen paper to drain. 7. Place the eggs into a bowl and whisk with a hand whisk. Add the cream and a pinch of salt and pepper. Finally add the grated cheese and sliced onions. 8. Take the pastry out of the fridge and roll out on a clean, floured surface. Carefully line a greased 23cm flan case with a removeable bottom. Trim off any excess. 9. Take the cheese, onion, cream and egg mixture and pour into the pastry case. Lay the bacon on the top. 10. Place on a baking tray on the bottom shelf of the oven. Cook for 30 – 40 mins until golden brown. This can be served simply with lambs leaf lettuce or any salad leaves and a dijon mustard dressing.

Dreaming of... ...India

India is a diverse land of stunning contrasts and has become a very popular holiday destination over the years. In this dynamic and diverse country it is not surprising to find numerous rich glories of the past, varied traditions and values, and various interesting cultures. The bustling cities, rare wildlife, pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, tranquil backwaters, barren deserts standing in contrast with rolling foothills, and innumerable ancient monuments - all this makes India a fascinating travel destination. Northern India is famed for its sights and the monuments of the Golden Triangle, which include the Taj Mahal at Agra, The Pink City of Jaipur, the scenery of Tiger country, the splendours of Rajasthan and the rush of Mumbai and Delhi. The Capital of India is Delhi, which itself is a contrast of old Delhi, hectic and fast-paced with higgledy-piggledy streets thronged with millions of people with motorbikes and tuk tuks, and New Delhi neatly designed with floral parks, wide avenues and regal monuments. Tiger country comprises 4 national parks spread across hundreds of miles encompassing jungle vegetation and an abundance of wildlife. Southern India is famed for Goa and Kerala in particular. Goa is distinct from the rest of India with its relaxing beach holidays and its tropical climate, scenery and paradise beaches. Away from the developed resort visitors discover remnants of Portuguese colonialism with medieval churches, mosques and temples to admire. Kerala has palm-fringed sandy beaches, lush green vegetation and still backwaters. It is big for growing tea and coffee, the plantations growing up from the sea. In the very north of the country is the border with Nepal. Nepal sits uncomfortably between India and China, and a visit there brings together the greatness of the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains with the poorness of the people who live there. October to March is the best time to visit the Northern states. December & January can experience light to heavy fog in the northern plains. October to April is the best time to visit the southern states. A valid visa is required to enter India. The flying time for Delhi is 8hrs, Mumbai (Bombay) is 9hrs and Calcutta is 10hrs from London.

“I've Got My Own Religion” truth of God's Word! Just believing something doesn't make it so. Jumping off the top of a high building onto the street below will kill you, no matter how strongly you believe otherwise. Entering into eternity when you die with the firm belief that there is no God, or that your beliefs or your works are good enough to merit His approval will not change the outcome: "Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" (Revelation 20:15). There is no hope for you outside of Christ and your accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour –We have all offended a Holy God and are under sentence of eternal These are sayings which you will hear from many punishment – but there is a way of escape! Just as the Jews had to put their hand on the head of the burnt people today: offering, as atonement for their sin, so we have to lay our “I’ve got my own religion” hand on His head (as it were) and personally accept His “Whatever you believe is alright.” blood as making atonement for us. “Everybody has their own beliefs.” Truth is not a matter of opinion. Either something is “Just so long as you believe something.” true or it is false. Jesus Christ claims to be the truth. They sound nice, and help to make people feel He did not say "I am a way," but rather, "I am the way, the good, since their own beliefs are said to be as truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but valid as those of anyone else. "After all," some say, by Me" (John 14:6). When it comes to faith, it is not, "Just "can you really know anything for sure?" People who so long as you believe something," but "Just so long as claim to have "the truth" are looked down upon as you believe Christ." Faith in Jesus Christ, who laid down being arrogant and intolerant. Because God is the One who saves, salvation is as value. It is not true that "Whatever you believe is certain as His promise: "He that heareth My word, and alright." The very fact that "Everybody has their own believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life beliefs" is what God says is man's biggest problem- and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed -we have exchanged His truth for our beliefs. Support for Young Carers It is estimated that there could be as many as 100,000 Young Carers in Scotland A Young Carer is a young person who is carrying out emotional or physical caring tasks for another person. That person may be a friend or relative who is disabled, has a chronic illness, mental health issue or misuses drugs and/or alcohol. The average age of a Young Carer is 12 Many live in lone parent families 1 in 10 are caring for more than one person If you are a young Carer, Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) will work with you to ensure that your caring responsibilities are minimised and that you have the opportunity to access the full range of opportunities available to young people, allowing you to be ‘just like other kids’. The support we offer includes lots of things, for example: Listening to your needs and working with you to put in place the ‘help’ you think would make a real difference Supporting you to take part activities in your own community e.g. clubs or groups Offering opportunities to meet other young Carers and share experiences Working with other professionals to make sure that your caring role is manageable and you able to do the same things as your friends Support to get qualifications which give you recognition for the skills you have developed as a young Carer Offering information, training and advice which you understand and helps you to feel more confident and able to care

Carer Support Service (Moray) “I feel more able to cope because Quarriers staff allowed me to talk through my problems.” “It was great thank you very much. I have learnt loads of things I am going to try… ” “I feel more able to be a young person growing up normally.”

Feeling Fat? Need to tone up? A Vibrational Plate is a machine that gives the body's muscles a low-impact, high-speed workout by using vibrations to stimulate them to contract and relax. They generally contract once or twice a second, but just by standing on it, the vibrations cause an automatic reflex muscle contraction of 30-50 a second. Just 10 minutes on the Vibrational Plate will have the same results as 60 minutes of conventional strenuous training. U Improves fitness levels U Burns fat & tones UÊ «À ÛiÃÊL> > Vi & coordination UÊ «À ÛiÃÊv iÝ L ÌÞ & muscle strength UÊ VÀi>ÃiÃÊL iÊ density This type of workout has actually been compared to doing about 3,000 leg bends, which of course would be impossible with a traditional workout. This means that not only does vibration plate training work, but it’s the best kind of workout that you can get! Many people who are excessively overweight have also said that it’s a great start to getting in shape because you don’t need to be extremely fit already to do it effectively. Training sessions are undertaken in a private room with a trainer, or alone, after your 3rd session – so no need to feel embarrassed about coming along! Initial session £15, all following sessions £5. For bookings or further information call:
