Civil Rights is in the news at the moment and is something close to my heart. I have never quite understood why the colour of one’s skin or the country of one’s birth should dictate how one is treated. Here is a poem by Langston Hughes, US Civil Rights activist (1902-1967) a contemporary of Martin Luther King.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Muchness

Words are wonderful things – they help us to define things, to put handles on ideas and concepts in order to manage it. On the other hand, words can also give wings to ideas, to set it free and allow it to have a life of its own. There are words with a specific meaning, and other words that are open-ended, words that invite the user to give meaning to it. In the story of Alice in Wonderland one can expect to find imaginative words. In the second book, Through the Looking-Glass, the Mad Hatter uses the word ‘muchness’ when he says to Alice: ‘You have lost your muchness’. In the past, Alice did not accept that there are things that are impossible to do, but now she respects the boundary between the possible and the impossible. Believing that the impossible is possible, would be part of her previous ‘muchness’ according to the Mad Hatter. When you reflect on the word ‘muchness’, one can imagine a number of applications of this word. There is even a reference in the Bible that can be seen as an early use of the word ‘muchness’. Whether the Mad Hatter knows his Bible, we will never know. However, his creator, Charles

Dodgson, who wrote under the pen name Lewis Carroll, did know his Bible. He was an ordained ‘Deacon’ in the Church of England. The relevant text in the Bible is the well-known instruction: Hear, O, Israel: The LORD our God the LORD is one. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your ‘muchness’. (Deuteronomy 6:4-5) In the Hebrew Bible the last word in this sentence is an unusual use of the Hebrew word for ‘much’ or ‘very’ (me’od in Hebrew). This word is actually an adverb, not a noun. ‘muchness’ would be the most appropriate way to translate it into English. In springtime and summer nature surprises us with its ‘muchness’ – new growth, flowers, fruit, new life. There may be a ‘muchness’ in our lives that we have not discovered yet: skills that we are unaware of, a greater ability to imagine, to love, to make friends, a fuller life – we can be ‘muchier’ than we thought! Jesus said: I have come in order that you might have life - life in all its fullness (John 10:10).

page 6 - May 2018

To love God with all our ‘muchness’ means to open ourselves to God’s love, and to let the love of Jesus ‘expand our being’. Note these words in the Letter to the Ephesians chapter 3: (17) ... and I pray that Christ will make his home in your hearts through faith. I pray that you may have your roots and foundation in love, (18) so that you, together with all God's people, may have the power to understand how broad and long, how high and deep, is Christ's love. (19) Yes, may you come to know his love---although it can never be fully known---and so be completely filled with the very nature of God. (20) To him who by means of his power working in us is able to do so much more than we can ever ask for, or even think of: (21) to God be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time, forever and ever! Amen. Rev Louis Bezuidenhout, Kinloss and Findhorn, Alves and Burghead.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times about NHS Concerns Grampian continue to feature heavily in my postbag and the recent news that the children’s ward in Elgin was once again going to close to overnight admissions was a further blow to the local area. We are trying to attract people to Moray as a shortage of medical staff is one of the reasons for the situation in the children’s ward, but Moray will seem a less attractive option if these important services are reduced or lost altogether. As well as the children’s ward, we have excessive waits for the eye clinic, chronic pain waiting times are unacceptable and a number of cases I have raised on behalf of local people have been responded to by both NHS Grampian and Scottish Government Ministers confirming the treatment delivered was unacceptable and fell below the standards we should expect. Given the growing concern locally about a variety of NHS issues I have asked NHS Grampian to join me at a public meeting in Moray to explain the current situation and their future plans. Local people deserve to hear directly from NHS managers about what they plan to do to ensure we all get appropriate health care in the local area. I will advertise details of the meeting in the local media when NHS Grampian confirm who will be attending.

We have that reached time of the year again when people from all around the world visit Scotland to experience our Highland Games. We are very fortunate to have so many Games on our doorstep with the Gordon Castle Highland Games, at Fochabers, being the first of the season on 20th May. In recent years our Highland Games have been very successful in attracting more and more tourists, a trend we should all celebrate. However, if you would like to avoid the big crowds I would encourage you to visit some of the smaller and community-run Highland Games. One of my favourites happens to be the Strathconon Games, held on 28th July. It has a warm family feel and where all the profits from the Games go towards the upkeep of the Village Hall. Visiting hidden gems like the Strathconon Games is also a great way to support local communities.

This month is the return of one of my favourite events of the year; the award winning Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. The festival is a wonderful celebration of our whisky industry, our food and drink sector, our music and culture, and all that is good about Speyside. The festival goes from strength to strength and each year I continue to be blown away be the exceptional programme of events. As well as being vital to our economy, the Speyside whisky is also at the very heart of our culture and our local heritage and in my view, we cannot celebrate that enough. Spirit of Speyside is an opportunity for visitors and locals to join together in celebrating our music, culture and heritage, in the splendour of Speyside and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

Reader, God never holds anyone responsible for not doing that which they cannot do. If He did, that would make God unrighteous. If you have not received God’s Salvation, found alone in His Son Jesus Christ, it is not because you cannot, but because you will not! If you confess your sins to the Lord Jesus Christ He is faithful and just to forgive you your sins, and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. Christ died for the ungodly!

Create and store your own solar energy The Tesla Energy Powerwall 2 stores up to 13.5 kWh of excess solar energy during daylight hours when your home electricity usage is low, then discharges in the evening during those high usage/peak times saving you money. The Powerwall can be installed with new Solar PV systems or can be retrofitted to existing PV systems. A home battery system protects homeowners from future electricity price increases and reduce reliance on the national grid.

About AES Solar Established in 1979, AES Solar are the oldest solar company in Western Europe and have completed solar thermal and PV installations all over the world. We proudly manufacture our range of solar thermal panels in Forres and our aim is to make Scotland the solar capital of the world.

Girl on Fire by Tony Parsons

The Last Tudor by Philippa Gregory

When terrorists use a drone to bring down a plane on one of London's busiest shopping centres DC Max Wolfe finds himself caught in the crossfire in a city that seems increasingly dangerous and hostile. But does the danger come from the murderous criminals that Max is tracking down? Or the people he's trying to protect? Or does the real threat to Max lie closer to home?

`Learn you to die' is the advice that Jane Grey gives in a letter to her younger sister Katherine, who has no intention of dying. She intends to enjoy her beauty and her youth and find love. So when Katherine's secret marriage is revealed by her pregnancy, she too must go to the Tower. `Farewell, my sister,' writes Katherine to the youngest Grey sister, Mary. A beautiful dwarf, disregarded by the court, Mary is determined to command her own destiny and be the last Tudor to risk her life in matching wits with her ruthless and unforgiving cousin Elizabeth.

Adult Non-Fiction M by Henry Hemming

Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why its absence is so damaging to our health. Why We Sleep delves in to everything from what really happens during REM sleep to how caffeine and alcohol affect sleep and why our sleep patterns change across a lifetime.

M is the extraordinary history of Britain’s greatest spymaster and the double lives of the men and women under his agency; the secret RLLWLYZ VM [OL )YP[PZO LZ[HISPZOTLU[ ° Drawing on declassified documents, private family archives and interviews with retired MI5 officers as well as the families of MI5 agents, M reveals not just the shadowy world of espionage but a brilliant, enigmatic man at its centre, who was also rumoured to be part of the inspiration for the character ‘M’ in the James Bond series.

Junior Non-Fiction

You Are Awesome by Matthew Syed I'm no good at sport ... I can't do maths ... I really struggle with exams ... Sound familiar? Times journalist, two-time Olympian and best-selling author of Bounce, Black Box Thinking and The Greatest, Matthew Syed, uses examples of successful people from Mozart to Serena Williams to demonstrate that success really is earned rather than given, and that talent can be acquired. Practical, insightful and positive, this is the book to help children build resilience, embrace their mistakes and grow into successful, happy adults.

inter has taken its time to leave this year but by May we are approaching the time of year when there is a massive growth spurt put on by our garden plants and lawns. This period of rapid growth only actually lasts six to eight weeks, and normally kicks in some time between the start of May and mid-June. Don’t expect to make huge amounts of progress in your garden during this time, and there are a few techniques that will help you keep on top of the garden during this part of the year.

Weeding is something a lot of people do not enjoy, but it need not be backbreaking work. The tools for the job here are a hoe, a stone rake and ideally a hand-fork. You do not need to physically remove every weed that you come across, and whilst ideally you will be able to uproot weeds with their roots and all, it does not matter if you cannot do this. The trick is regular weeding, as if you keep on cutting weeds in half and turning them into the soil, they do not get a chance to take hold. There are of course more stubborn weeds such as Aegopodium podagraria (Ground Elder/Bishopsweed) and Elymus repens (Couch Grass), but regular hoeing and turning will weaken even these imposters. Weeds over about 3cm in height I do remove, and once you have weeded a section of bed, take the stone rake to it to further disturb the soil surface and neaten the appearance.

Grass cutting is the other labour-intensive job that needs doing in the garden, but again you can have a pragmatic approach towards this. Once grass is growing rapidly, if you want a pristine lawn you could be mowing as regularly as twice per week. However, the golden rule is not to leave it any longer than once every two weeks. During the period of vigorous growth this will mean that your grass gets a little long between cuts, but the key is to stop weeds in the lawn setting seed. If you do let weeds flower and seed, your lawn will deteriorate more quickly as the more aggressive weeds gradually out-compete the grass plants. If you have time, weekly cuts are a happy compromise.

Hedge cutting can be timed to get the best results from your efforts. Hedges such as Ligustrum spp. (Privet) and Buxus sempervirens (Box) should receive the first of their three cuts some time in May, but be guided by how much growth there has been – does it look messy or not? If you are yet to plant a hedge, consider the fact that the likes of Fagus sylvatica (Beech), Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) and Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn) only need one cut per year, in late summer. Remember, when trimming hedges always make sure you check for birds’ nests first.
