Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings the dead and Remembering considering our own death There are various occasions throughout the year when we remember those who have died. However, the month of November beckons two significant days where we, the living, pause and collectively remember those who have gone before us. November begins with All Souls' Day on the 2nd day of the month and on the 11th we observe Remembrance Day. Several themes surface during these occasions as we remember the life, death and the circumstances of the death of those whom we remember. Reflections are often made on what the person has meant to the family and community. Thoughts are shared about the ways in which their lives and sacrifices have shaped our lives today. There are also attempts to glean valuable examples that can be learned from the life of the person remembered, or in cases of the commemoration of those who died in battles, lessons that can be learned from those wars. This being a significant year, marking the centenary of the end of World War I there is much research and reflection on various aspects of the war and its implications on our lives over the past hundred years and for the future. There is indeed much value in gaining

insight from those who have gone before us and their experiences. We often find ourselves at the receiving end of a collective experience of remembering, reflecting and learning. After all, it is someone else’s death we are remembering, however close that person may have been to us. Remembering the dead also brings to focus the awareness of our own death. This element seldom appears in our remembrance ceremonies and celebrations of those whom we remember. We don’t see overt expressions of this awareness, particularly in today’s society, where death is hidden away and is not openly talked about. There are also attempts to break this silence. Some organise ‘Death Cafés’ where people meet and discuss matters relating to death. While such initiatives provide opportunities for open conversations about death, dying and caring for the dying, even here death can be treated outside the ‘self’. Why should we remember our own death? What role can the awareness of our own death have on how I live my life today? Ancient wisdom recorded in the form of a prayer gives us a clue. Moses prays: “teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart” (Psalm 90: 12). The awareness of our own death encourages one to live in the present

time with a ‘wise heart’, drawing insight from God, who is the source of all wisdom – wisdom that enables knowledge, understanding, justice and equity (Proverbs 2:6 – 9). Is remembering our own death dark, scary and painful? Once again there is wisdom from the David as expressed in one of the most familiar psalms: “even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me” (Psalm 23:4). As eminent theologian, Marcus Borg observed, “I am confident that the one who has buoyed us up in life will also buoy us up through death. We die into God.” The Easter experience remains a powerful reminder of hope and new life and the constant and unfailing presence of God. As we remember, celebrate, give thanks and pay due respect to those who have gone before us, let us also be reminded of our own mortality seeking to spend our limited time in this word, shaping our lives with the wisdom from God, confident that God is always with us now and in the future, journeying with us in life, in death and beyond! You may notice that the paper stock we are using this month is different from the normal. We are running a trial with new printers and new paper stock in an effort to keep costs down in the current climate of rising paper supply costs - due in part to adverse fluctuations in the exchange rate between the pound and the euro. We are hoping that one consequence of the change will be freeing up more pages for editorial in the future. We are also continuing our survey into what editorial people would prefer to read and you can join this survey by visiting www.spotlighton.co.uk and clicking on the survey button.

Christian, set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. We are not to be the same as those who know not the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour - we are to be different. We are ambassadors for Him and we are to walk worthy of Him. Holiness is not an option for us but a commandment and an absolute necessity in life. We are to glorify God in our bodies and in our spirits, always looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

HEALTH WORKS - your well being in good hands The days are getting colder and the light is diminishing. These last months of the year are inviting us to stay indoors, to snuggle up in front of the fireplace with a hot cup of tea. We look for warmth and also for connection in order to feel good; in fact, these components are essential for our health. Who doesn’t know about the nourishment we feel through the touch of another human being. Irene Schenk is a specialist in empathic and compassionate touch. As Shiatsu Practitioner she offers her skills to bring relief from suffering; her treatments address energetic imbalances, provide relief from stress or tension, treat current symptoms and help maintaining your physical health. The beauty of Shiatsu is that it is deeply relaxing with its healing potential and that regular sessions are a very pleasant way to prevent future health issues. Irene has graduated as Shiatsu Practitioner in 1996 and is now back at Healthworks in Forres with her wealth of experience. She is part of a team of fully trained, experienced and insured Practitioners that offer an extensive range of complementary and alternative health care therapies with the aim to restore and bring balance to your mind, body and soul. Parliament Blog & Tide Times The dark winter nights have changed the Moray landscape and the fantastic summer is definitely a distant memory, but November gets off to a brighter start as Bonfire Night celebrations are in full swing. Even before the last embers have died, organisers in towns across Moray will be stringing up displays ready for their festive light switch-on. Can I also take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contacted Krystle and I following the announcement that we are expecting our first child next year. With all the joy surrounding this, there are also the questions all future parents in Moray are currently facing about where they will have their child; how they will get to Aberdeen if they have to go there and what kind of journey they will face as they travel a considerable distance in labour. I have been working with the campaigners since the announcement of the downgrading of maternity paediatric services at Doctor Gray’s and while I previously heard their concerns, I now very much share them as well. As usual I can be contacted on douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk

Christmas is fast approaching and it is time to think about stirring the Christmas pudding but it is also the time to think about how we can help locally. Christmas gives us all the chance to not only to buy local but also to help in our own neighbourhoods, so perhaps that should be our festive resolution. Whilst online shopping couldn’t be more convenient, it comes at a cost. Little of our hard earned money ends up in the local economy and in the Highlands we often have to face expensive and unfair delivery costs. Shopping locally ensures local jobs, more independent shops and some truly unique gifts often showcasing local craftsmanship. So in the run up to Christmas my plea is that we all think about what we can do locally so that all Highlanders can benefit.

The Scottish Government is investing almost £1 billion in free childcare, with families across Moray set to benefit from an ambitious increase in the number of free childcare hours. The investment will see families entitled to 1140 hours of free childcare for three and four year olds and, by almost doubling the availability of free childcare, parents are set to save hundreds of pounds a month, with many finding it easier to return to work. Local authority and partner childcare providers are vital to the delivery of this ambitious policy and ensuring that our children get the best start in life, and so last month I hosted a meeting in Elgin for local childcare providers to meet with the Minister for Children and Young People, Maree Todd MSP. I felt it was important that they had the opportunity to share their views with the Minister and to put any questions directly to her. This is a significant investment in families in Moray and will undoubtedly be of enormous help to local people with young children.

SpotLIGHT Garden

Brought to you by:

Scarification – How Much Will it Cost ? It is the toughest job of the year, but it is the key thing to get done if you are serious about keeping on top of moss. You can do it yourself, if it is a small lawn this is feasible, and could be done with a spring rake. Or for a larger lawn you might consider hiring a machine for the day. I think the going rate is around £50 per day, plus £20 delivery and collection. Many of you will have done this yourself and will appreciate it is not a job for the faint hearted. We will have around 800 lawns to scarify over the next few months. We usually use 2 men plus machines and blowers. While a small lawn can often be done in a couple of hours, a larger lawn can be an all day affair, or even longer. I thought it would be worth putting out some typical prices we would charge:

scarifiing

Size

Price (incl VAT)

Small

Up to 40m2

£57

Medium

Up to 100m2

£90

Large

Up to 200m2

£139

Aerating (hollow-core tining) is a bit cheaper, largely because there is less to clear up, which is very heavy and time-consuming.

For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per month, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with one million lawns being treated, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Words by the Wayside “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” (1st Corinthians 15:22)

Reader, are you “in Adam” or are you “in Christ”? You are for sure one or the other. The Lord Jesus says those that are not with Him are against Him. No man or woman living shall be justified before God. They need to die in the death of Christ and rise again with Him in newness of life. Have you repented of your sins and received Jesus Christ as your Saviour? Are you born again? Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb? Are you “in Christ”?

Carers Rights Day 2018 Caring for your future

emergency planning, signposting and referral to specialist agencies and much more.

Carers Rights Day is an annual event, bringing organisations across the UK together to help carers in their local community know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to. Carers Rights Day aims to: ĂŽ 0DNH FDUHUV DZDUH RI WKHLU ULJKWV ĂŽ /HW FDUHUV NQRZ ZKHUH WR JHW KHOS and support ĂŽ 5DLVH DZDUHQHVV RI WKH QHHGV RI carers

Having the right information at the right time can make all the difference when you’re looking after someone. Every day 6,000 people become carers but often it’s not something we’ve planned for. This year’s Carers Rights Day, on Friday 30 November 2018, will focus on the theme of Caring for Your Future. +HUH LQ 0RUD\ WKHUH DUH DOPRVW carers, each facing their own particular challenges and seeking information and advice to help them manage their role. 4XDUULHUV &DUHU 6XSSRUW 6HUYLFH 0RUD\ offers free access to information, advice, peer support, short breaks, emotional support, training,

Working alongside our colleagues in 0RUD\ÉV &DUHU 6HUYLFH 3URYLGHU 1HWZRUN ZH VXSSRUW 0RUD\ÉV &DUHU $ZDUH &DUG which helps carers think ahead for who might be able to step in at short notice if something unexpected happens to them. We also support carers to use the (QDEOH (PHUJHQF\ 3ODQQLQJ 7RRONLW WR prepare detailed instructions for anyone helping the person they care for in the carer’s absence. 3UHSDULQJ IRU WKH IXWXUH QHHGV VR PXFK PRUH 3RZHU RI $WWRUQH\ LV VRPHWKLQJ many people don’t consider until it’s too late, and writing a will can often be viewed as unnecessary but without it many families find themselves in difficult situations at the worst possible time. Supporting someone to prepare for end of life can be daunting but rewarding, and just taking the time to consider what you want your future to be and how to make that happen can seem like an unreachable luxury. Whatever your viewpoint, the future is coming. Contact us now to start preparing for yours. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

Honey Caramel Slice This easy caramel slice recipe is ideal for having on hand for after-school snacks, when having a cup of tea, or even to take to work or bake sales. A winner in any situation!

Ingredients: BASE 200g butter

FILLING

310g plain flour

2 x 395g condensed milk

115g caster sugar

100g butter

2 egg yolks

115g honey

Method: 1. Heat oven to 180°c. Grease a 20cm x 50cm tin and line with greaseproof paper. 2. Make the base, in a food processor. Blitz all the ingredients, with the exception of the yolks, until it resembles a breadcrumb texture. Add yolks and a few teaspoons of cold water, if necessary, to form a dough.

3.

Take half the dough and press into the lined tin, wrap the remaining half and place it in the freezer. Bake for about 15 minutes until lightly golden.

4. Meanwhile in a heavy based pan, place the butter and condensed milk over a low heat until thickened. Take off the heat. Add the honey. Pour over base and allow to cool.

5.

Grate the dough from the freezer into a cold dish and sprinkle over the cooled caramel base, bake for around 30 minutes until golden.

Hubert Horatio By Lauren Child

The Bobton-Trent seniors certainly know how to make the most of their extravagant wealth - socialising, doing things, buying things and generally being more than a little bit ... irresponsible. Unluckily for Hubert, this tends to mean that a lot of his spare time is spent steering his rather unruly set of grown-ups out of trouble.
