PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS An invitation. Imagine you have been given the responsibility to arrange an important banquet. Who do you invite? Each person has to be carefully selected in order to meet the host’s expectations. Friends, family, work colleagues, a few influential people and others appear on a provisional guest list. Finally, the list of names is narrowed down to a chosen few - those final places being scrutinised like judges in an X factor audition. The hard work has been completed and invitations are sent out – job done. You wait eagerly for responses to confirm attendance. Surely no one would decline such a generous invitation? Days pass by, but still no response. Then eventually, one-by-one, every person named on your guest list presents you with an excuse declining the invitation. Banquet cancelled – so you might well conclude! Thinking you have failed miserably in your mission, you approach the expectant host and convey the bad news. Then something unexpected happens. Rather than sending you swiftly on your way with a mouthful of

criticism, the host instructs you to go immediately into the local town and invite those who would be grateful of a good meal in the company of a good and generous host. “Don’t judge anyone,” are the host’s parting words that ring in your ears as you go out and personally distribute each invitation with a far greater sense of purpose than before. Before long, the banquet hall is full to capacity with thankful guests enjoying a great feast, and the host is very pleased. You begin to wonder - perhaps the host had known all along those people who would decline and those who would accept the invitation. What starts out as an ambitious and exiting challenge can often become a heavy burden. A thankless task in facing excuse upon excuse of those who you think would, could or should be thankful. This is why Jesus reassures all believers – the Christian church - through telling the parable of the ‘Great Feast’ in which we are presented with words of joy: ‘Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the Kingdom of God’, and with words that bring the truth to bare: ‘For many are invited, but few are chosen’

Many will make their excuses and decline God’s invitation, but some have yet to respond. Some will think they have already been invited, but they couldn’t be further from the truth. Many have known a deep need of Christ – a heart’s desire that only Christ can truly satisfy. A sense of knowing – above all else - we are accepted by Christ just as we are rather than allowing ourselves to be judged by the ever-changing standards of this world. How will you be judged? Today, how will you respond to your invitation to eat at the feast in the Kingdom of God? As for every Christian, we should always persevere as we go about our ‘Great Commission’. Through trial and error we can relate our personal experience to the plight of the person charged with sending out the invitations. No matter what the response we can be encouraged by Jesus’ words telling of what is to come: His ‘house will be full’. His house will be filled, and we shall look forward to the feast! For this we will be eternally thankful. Lloyd Gallantree Elder, The Lighthouse Church, Forres

We have all seen the horrific scenes in recent weeks of the crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean as refugees risk death fleeing war and persecution. Here in Moray I joined with others at Elgin Town Hall all sharing the same concerns about the crisis and determined to work out what we can do to help. With people from the voluntary sector, concerned individuals, church groups and people of different political backgrounds all represented and all working together it was great to see Moray at its best - pulling together to help people who need it the most, regardless of where in the world it is happening. In Moray there are a great many people who suffer from chronic pain and over the last year I’ve been working hard alongside chronic pain patients to fight for a pain clinic to be reinstated at Dr Gray’s. Having met with a number of people suffering from chronic pain over the last six months, I’ve had a real insight into the challenges pain sufferers face on a daily basis. I am therefore absolutely delighted that following a meeting with NHS Grampian it has been announced that the pain clinic will start at Dr Gray’s again in February. A local support group, ‘Affa Sair’, has been set up on Facebook and those who set the group up are doing an incredible job of raising awareness of chronic pain, providing each other with support and campaigning to make sure pain patients in Moray have their voice heard.

Over the past week the starters have included whitebait, fresh soups, buffalo meatballs and southern fried chicken and the mains have included roast rib of beef, pheasant, king prawn spaghetti and open lasagne of mushrooms, leeks and pecorino cheese. The menus are changed every couple of days and are always of the same high standard using local and sometimes foraged ingredients to make the well presented and, more importantly, beautifully tasting food.

Recovery happens Arrows is the new drug and alcohol support service in Moray. Run by Quarriers, Arrows supports adults with problematic substance use, offering advice, information and treatment to support individuals in their recovery. Who is the Service for? Arrows is a service for anyone worried about alcohol and drug use, whether their own or a loved one’s. Substance use problems can develop over time, and it is important for individuals to recognise where drugs or alcohol are having an impact on their wellbeing, relationships or lifestyle. Support is available to anyone with concerns, no matter how small. At times it’s the friends, family or other people around an individual who may recognise their drug or alcohol issue first. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved ones.

What support is available? Arrows offers a listening ear and provides advice and information for people facing addiction issues. Our one-to-one and peer group support helps to build motivation, set goals and manage addictions using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches and Motivational Interviewing.

How do I access support? You can drop into our Elgin office during opening hours. We are located near the end of the High Street, with both a High Street entrance and side door entrance on Kilmolymock Close. Alternatively, you can call, text or email and we can arrange to meet with you at a convenient time and location to discuss support options.

Will I be anonymous? You can contact the service anonymously to speak to someone, and disclose your name or information on your own terms. We will only keep or share information about you with your consent and your on-going support will be agreed in partnership with you. We do have a duty to share information where we have concerns that you or an individual are at risk of harm.

Will you involve my family or friends? We recognise the benefits of including family members and loved ones in accessing support and on-going recovery. We can discuss this with you should you wish to include a family member or friend, or you yourself wish to be included as a supportive factor in a loved one’s recovery.

IN MORAY by Brian Lockey author of The Path to Cawdor In reality King Duncan was an aggressor who brought an army north to eliminate Macbeth. He arrived at the Moray Firth, sailed up Loch Spynie and did battle with Macbeth's forces at Pitgavney near Elgin. Precise details are not known but a local history claims he was brought injured from the fighting to Elgin Castle where he died. Macbeth, believing he had a genuine claim, then assumed the Scottish crown.

A Desert Place

With the recent release of the movie “Macbeth – All Hail” maybe folk would like to know more about the real Macbeth who was born around AD 1000 and crowned King of Scotland in 1040. Aside from not being the Thane of Cawdor there are many other inaccuracies in the Shakespeare version of his life. Witches feature in the Scottish Play but they have no part in the true story of Macbeth, Mormaer of Moray. In fact he and his wife Gruoch were both active Christians. However, King James IV of Scotland believed in witches and their evil ways. Shakespeare, ever keen to please James, is said to have included such witches in the play for his benefit. It is quite plausible that the three Forres witches who allegedly made King Duff seriously ill in the 10th century provided a blueprint for the play characters. The fact that both covens were near Forres is unlikely to be co-incidence.

Witches Stone, Forres

Spynie Palace

After meeting the witches in the play Macbeth is welcomed to Forres by King Duncan at his castle. A castle did actually exist at Forres in Macbeth's time. It was sited at a good defensive point where the Thompson monument now stands. However, King Duncan never lived there. Nor did Macbeth ever stay at an Inverness Castle where, according to the play, he later murders Duncan.

During Macbeth's reign Scotland had a rare period of political and social stability. This allowed him time to enhance the status of Scotland by going on a long pilgrimage to Rome in 1050 where he had an audience with Pope Leo IX. Elgin Castle

Regarding Macbeth's death, a battle did take place in Perthshire, most probably at Dunsinane Hill as Shakespeare wrote. Macbeth defended his position there after being pursued by Northumbrian forces led by Earl Siward. While defeated in that battle, Macbeth escaped unharmed. It is argued that Macbeth stood down in favour of his stepson Lulach in 1057. Lulach was also pursued by forces wishing to place Duncan's son Malcolm on the throne. Macbeth came out of retirement after his son died in subsequent fighting. In 1058 a further battle took place at Lumphanan, in modern Aberdeenshire. It is here where Macbeth died. One story claims he was captured alive and beheaded at Macbeth's Stone near the battle site. The new King Malcolm later gave Macbeth's body a respectful burial alongside other kings at St. Oran's Cemetery on Iona. The people of Scotland, and Moray in particular, should therefore be proud of Macbeth and recognise that he was a decent king who helped forge the nation we currently live in. It is so sad that, thanks mainly to Shakespeare, he is not generally recognised as such.
