Someone asks - how is it that the US, one of the greatest “Superpowers” of the day, have ended up with Trump and Clinton. This set me thinking. How indeed I thought. Maybe we have all missed something, maybe the process of democracy, as potentially flawed as all systems of democracy are, have delivered up these candidates precisely because it can. I asked myself whether we might ever see the like in the UK and my mind turned back to some of our previous leaders and if we look hard enough there are quite a few “characters” among them. Food for thought perhaps?“

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS November is a month of darkening skies and darkened nights. I enjoy the warmer November nights when there is a clear sky and the stars are clearly visible. The glories of creation are often seen best on a clear night, but clear nights often come with the frost.
For children it is a time of fun and enjoyment with Halloween and Bonfires and Fireworks displays. November is
War. Here is the poem:
freedoms we enjoy today.
“ Today, as I rode by, I saw the brown leaves dropping from their tree In a still afternoon, When no wind whirled them whistling to the sky, But thickly, silently, They fell, like snowflakes wiping out the noon; And wandered slowly thence For thinking of a gallant multitude which now all withering lay, Slain by no wind of age or pestilence, But in their beauty strewed Like snowflakes falling on the Flemish clay.”
May we never give up lightly or easily those freedoms. And may we never fall into apathy when wrongdoing has to be challenged, or we too may be called on to make that same sacrifice.
also a time when nature goes to sleep for the Winter. Among the birds,
the
Summer visitors in the trees and hedgerows have long since flown south, following the sun. Perhaps most obvious of all are the piles of brown coloured fallen leaves , with barely a few signs of greenery left on the branches.
“The Falling Leaves” is the title of a poem by Margaret Postgate-Coles which she wrote in 1915 to compare the multitude of fallen leaves with the men who had fallen in the First Word
Yes in November we also remember the fallen in those visitations called war, caused mainly by human greed and lust for power. This is not of God! However, as Edmund Burk, the Philiosopher stated, “ For evil to triumph, it is sufficent for good men to do nothing.” Peace and justice are bought at a price and someone has to make the sacrifce and pay the price. So with grateful hearts we remember and thank those people, many in their youth, who paid the ultimate price for the

The Gospel of Jesus Christ gives good news to us all. In the battle with evil and sin, He, Jesus, has paid the price for us and made the ultimate sacrifice . All people who decide to commit their lives to God through Jesus Christ can rejoice in that Good News.
In the book of Isaiah, Ch 53 and verse 6 we read...” All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned each one to his own way. And the Lord has laid on HIM the iniquity of us all.” This is a message of hope and good news for all who follow Jesus.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES I’m delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to this edition of Spotlight as one of your regional MSPs. I was elected in May and cover the entire Highlands and Islands region which includes Moray. Tea in the Park at Glenlivet Hall was one of my highlights this summer. Every day through August you could get an excellent lunch or tea and cakes made by the volunteers with all the proceeds spent locally. The day we went, there was a large group in, so the only tables left were outside. My peanut and broccoli soup was outstanding and made all the better by eating it al fresco in Speyside! I hope whatever you did over the summer you had a good time. Now we’re well into the autumn, the few days of sunshine we had are a distant memory!
I recently had the great pleasure of meeting organisers and runners at the weekly Elgin Parkrun to mark the 12th Anniversary of the parkrun movement. Hundreds of parkruns take place around the world and in Elgin alone over 100 volunteers help to make it work for the now well over 1,000 people who have taken part. It is a fantastic way for folk to improve their fitness with like minded people with feeling self-conscious and meeting other folk. "There are walkers, joggers and runners taking part with the aim being improved health and wellbeing. A great initiative right on our doorstep….and it’s completely free to join in! Check it out online at: www.parkrun.org.uk/elgin.

Welcoming is very much a part of CLAN Cancer Support’s work with those affected by a cancer diagnosis and the family and friends who support them during that time. CLAN do an amazing job with the dedicated staff and volunteers at their office in Elgin and in the outreach work they do throughout the Moray area and I’m delighted that we’re able to support CLAN Cancer Support through our annual competition. If you have children or grandchildren who’d like to enter our competition the deadline for entries is the 18th November and they can be sent directly to our offices at 9 Wards Road, Elgin, IV30 1NL.

“The Meal Mill ”
What I love most about The Old Mill Inn is the sincere welcome you always get and the really cosy atmosphere. I'm not quite sure how they do it – is it because it is so often busy, the warm ǡ Ƥ ȋ cooler!) or that feeling of history that goes with the building? Ƥ ͚͘͝ told. I believe that it used to be a “Meal Mill” and maybe that's why the food is always so good! You don't always expect food ǡ Ƥ things that makes The Old Mill Inn stand out from the rest. They always use proper professional chefs and you can certainly taste that in the quality of the food, and it met our every expectation again. Maybe this is why some of our previous visits have been very special to my partner and I. As always when we arrived we were greeted by the owner Kevin, who showed us to our seats. We had decided on a meal in the restaurant area, though if you like you can have a bar meal which is served in the other areas of The Old Mill Inn. Kevin handed us the menus and took our drink orders, the restaurant was full and there was a really good atmosphere. For starters I had the seared Orkney scallops, Stornoway black ǡ ƪ Chris had good old fashioned Cullen Skink with smoked haddock, onions and leeks – both starters were perfect - the Scallops were cooked to perfection and the Stornoway Black Pudding, as always, a great combination with the Scallops. The Cullen Skink was thick and creamy and just the prefect size for a starter not too much so you can't manage your main meal and with this came homemade bread and something which I thought was a lovely touch, homemade butter which was very tasty. For our mains I decided on breast of chicken, fettucine, basil and parmesan 'batter', asparagus, mushrooms and sun-dried ǡ ͠ Ƥ and a peppercorn and brandy sauce to complement the steak. ƪ both meals was lovely. I knew exactly what I was going to have for a dessert which was ơ Ǥ ǫ They do one of the best and every time I am there I order it for dessert, Chris had the Hardmuir strawberry meringue and Ƥ Ǥ

Following the Light - New oil paintings 4 - 30 October 2016 An exhibition at Moray Art Centre, Near Findhorn About the Artist: I started drawing at an early age. I loved books about the natural world and I used to spend a lot of time copying illustrations of birds and animals. I rarely drew things out of my imagination – I just wanted to recreate what I saw.

Its easy to get careless in your observation and on the other hand, overly careful and fussy putting the paint on. The right balance requires discipline and a bit of daring at times (some necessary traits for

The Free Community Information website - Free to view and Free to upload your listings. View our entire database of Clubs and Societies, Trades Listings, What’s On Diary, Restauarants, Reviews and articles, Schools, Holidays Tides, Useful Numbers and more...
SpotLight magazine launches new free online community database www.spotlighton.co.uk Over the last 12 months the SpotLight magazine has been designing and developing a brand new interface for the Moray and Highland area. The website is free to use and free for people to upload their own information. As a user of the site, it is not necessary to register, although doing so will enable the database to localise your information search. SpotLight are pleased to advise that there are thousands of listings already loaded which include detailed information in the following areas: Trades, Clubs & Societies, Restaurants, Things to See & Do, Places of Interest, Useful Contacts etc. More than this though, is the What’s On Diary to which any organisation can upload all of their events for free. Again there are hundreds of entries already in place. The website doesn’t stop there either! In addition there is a brand new interactive recruitment section where once again you can browse current vacancies or upload your CV and have potential employers contact you directly – again this is a free service. Recruiters should note that in the first 6 months of operation SpotLight are offering substantial discounts to the normal rates which in any event are priced very competitively. Quarterly, 6-monthly and Annual packages are also available at greater discounts. The SpotLight magazines were originally launched in 2008 and this latest development reflects the changing trends in online usage and it is hoped that people will take advantage of this free service and help connect people with activities. The ethos behind both the SpotLight magazines and the SpotLight On website is that of creating communication and fellowship within Moray and the Highlands and the public’s support in this is much appreciated. A Special “Highland” Moss Do You Have This ? I need to talk today about “upright moss” or “tufted moss”. Many lawns in this area have patches of this, as well as the usual “cushion” moss. It is well described in gardening books and magazines, and on the internet. It is a difficult moss to treat as it has roots, not unlike heather, rather than a moss which grows from spores like the usual stuff. This means that a regular moss treatment, usually containing iron to de-hydrate and blacken the top growth, therefore killing it prior to it being raked out or scarified, doesn’t actually finish the job. It still blackens the top-growth, but doesn’t kill the roots, so it just takes a hit, and carries on growing, leaving a disfiguring blackened patch, with new growth coming through. It also doesn’t rake out or scarify very successfully as it has a good grip of the ground.

competition offered by stunted, weak lawn grass, usually exacerbated by being habitually cut too short. The remedy suggested is to aerate the ground with a fork or machine, and apply lime to reduce the acidity. This works best in conjunction with a programme of regular feeding of the grass, and crucially, allowing the grass to grow a bit to recover some strength and provide some competition. Don’t cut it short in other words. We typically spend a good part of the winter months aerating lawns and spreading lime on this moss, before beefing up the grass in the spring with a spring feed. It generally takes at least a season to turn around. Very little happens instantly with lawn care !

It also thrives on ground that is poor in general, compacted, and where there is little

Chef’s Confidential
Gluten free chocolate & almond torte This month’s recipe is supplied by The Peppermill Restaurant in Forres and is inspired by memories of childhood. Owner, Sophie Rooke, recalls enjoying this recipe in her youth with tantalising baking smells emanating from the oven. Apart from this, fond memories of licking the bowl clean of the unused mix, means it is still a firm favourite. serves approx 6-8 Ingredients: 600g dark chocolate 1 cup double cream 5 eggs 1 cup sugar 3 cups ground almonds Melt chocolate over a low heat. Allow to cool and then combine with the cream. Beat eggs & sugar until trebled in volume. Add the melted chocolate and cream into the eggs and mix well. Add almonds to the mix and pour into a greased and floured loose bottomed cake tin. Pre heat ove to 180 degrees (fan 160 degrees, Gas Mark 4) and bake until cooked. Please enjoy!! 118 High Street, FORRES IV36 1NP ¬
