The Editor

As summer draws to a close, I often look forward to seeing the incredible panoply of colours brought to us by the autumn leaves. From reds to browns, yellows and greens it is a sight to behold. Americans talk of the Aspen woodlands but we have just as stunning autumn scenery along the Moray Firth Coastline. Try stopping alongside one of the many fast flowing rivers and sucking in the views. It cannot be beaten!

Pastoral letter and Church Meetings Autumn Leaves One of the most memorable events of childhood is the experience of wading though piles of dried brown and golden -red leaves piled up on paths and pavements. October brings wellie boot weather and the beautiful rich colours of Autumn surround us. Early frosts give the fields a sprinkling of white dew like icing sugar on breakfast cereal. The bight skies have a drama in them ranging from dark somber clouds to clear moonlight, bringing out the owls. There is so much to remind us at this time of year of the beauty and splendor of the created order which surrounds us. On those rare occasions when we escape from artificial light and heated houses, we become aware of our own creatureliness. We suddenly rediscover, as if for the first time again our place in the whole vast order of nature, time and space. We look up at the night

sky and wonder at the millions of stars and galaxies stretching across the universe. This is a season for reflection... for looking back on the warm days of summer and enjoying the rich taste of apples and other fruits. If you search for poems about autumn you will find they abound with a glow of enjoyment and wonder. The medieval poet John Donne wrote of autumn..." No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face (Autumn quote by John Donne). So in October we can slow down a little and think about the great creative power behind all this richness and splendour. In our Anglo- Saxon language we name the creator as GOD. In the Christian tradition we know and experience this creator as close, loving and personal. As personal as the relationship between a parent and a child.

In the journey of life from cradle to grave, an end that awaits us all and from which no one can escape, we can look back on joyful childhood experiences from flower petals caressing our infant cheeks to later experiences of flying leaves swirling in gusts of wind, made visible by their dancing brown confetti. As an anonymous poet wrote, "When autumn wind goes running It does some magic things. It gives the shadows dancing shoes gives the bright leaves wings." So during October, I invite you to enjoy all the richness and splendour of Autumn that fills the senses with a variety of rich colours and tastes, and at a time that we can all thank God our generous creator and who, in due season, calls us all home, like Autumn leaves. Public Session: •Police Constable skivington said that in the last month schoolwatch had been launched, in co-operation with schools in the area to protect the schools from vandals and anti social behaviour during the holiday period. apart from additional patrols being made members of the public are asked to be vigilant and report suspicious behaviour. We were briefed about a multi agency operation concerned with underage drinking involving plain clothed police and Moray youth Justice on the 9th of July which seized a quantity of alcohol and a 19 year old male who is to be reported to the Procurator Fiscal for supplying alcohol to underage persons. PC skivington also told us about operation Moravia, designed to reduce anti social driving in the Forres area manned by both Forres local Policing team and Elgin roads Policing, in which various offences were detected including 4 careless driving cases, 1 dangerous driving, 2 speeding cases, 2 failing to wear seat belts & 2 stopping on crossings. he said that 4 asbo driving warnings had been issued in the first weekend. he introduced Craig Barron who is researching a presentation on anti social driving. Members questioned Mr Barron on various aspects of anti social behaviour, including thoughtless parking, such as in tolbooth street, cyclists jumping from roads to pavements and back again to the detriment of both drivers and pedestrians. Cllr hayward asked what meaningful punishments could be meted out to young drivers. •Cllr Ferris updated the members into his ongoing research into alternative power generation systems and said that large wind turbines appear to be non starters due to problems associated with their site location and start up costs. he told members that he was still looking at smaller systems. •Cllr smith raised concerns at the amount of flooding that blocks pavements on Grantown road every time it rains. he said that although drains on Grant Drive and Mannachie road were supposed to save run off due to the suDs system they failed to prevent excess water build up. it was recalled that a long

drain over to the Findhorn was called for in the local plan before building on a large scale was to be allowed in that area of the town but appears to have been conveniently forgotten by the planning department and developers. Secretary’s Report:•the secretary reported that there were few letters due to the summer break but we had received an update from Film Forres. Mrs Cowie said that to date the fund raising had resulted in the sum of £28.412.00 being raised towards the target of £38.500 required to purchase the new equipment required to turn the town hall into a community cinema. Whilst he realised that the Community Council had made a sizeable donation for rental charges demanded by the local authority the secretary called upon members to make personal donations to the fund. •Members of the Community Council had been invited to attend a Birthday Party to celebrate the 21st year of Forres in Bloom and to combine that occasion with the judging of Forres in the Britain in Bloom 2011. the secretary asked members who were interested in attending to notify him so that FiB could be given advance notice of attendees. •the secretary told members that an approach had been made to him reference the Community Council coat of arms and its use on the new sign boards at the entrance to the town. BEar scotland were co-ordinating the production of the signs but required a hi - definition copy of the crest, which could only be obtained from the original granting of the crest. the secretary arranged for Mr B laing from the Forres Camera Club to have access to the crest, held in the Falconer Museum, and then transferred it electronically to BEar scotland. he notified members that under the rules laid down by the lord lyon use of the crest is only permitted by the owners, the Community Council, and therefore proposed that the Council should grant permission for its use on the town entry signs. Cllr hellyer seconded this motion and the Cllrs present supported this unanimously. the secretary thanked members and agreed to finalise the necessary measures.

Chair’s Report:•the Chair said that he had nothing to report External Groups Report:•Cllr hayward raised the matter of planning permission for the Castle inn, to be taken up by Cllr Bell, in response Cllr ogilvie said that the planning department had replied to the owners agent. Cllr hayward also asked if support for the skatepark could now be processed after the sale of Bogton Common Good land had been rejected. the secretary replied that the skateboard Committee had been encouraged to re submit their application. •the secretary submitted a question to the Cllrs, on behalf of Cllr Mackenzie, about the lack of entries in the latest telephone directory for Visit scotland. if Moray was to encourage visitors it was essential that phone numbers of the tourist information Points was available. •Moray Cllr ogilvie said that she had called for signs to nelson’s tower to be placed on st leonard’s road to aid the tourists Treasurer’s Report:no figures were available due to the absence of the treasurer A.O.C.B:Cllr hellyer told the meeting that we had received this year’s Common Good accounts and asked the Cllrs if they had received any response to the three questions given to them for answer by Moray Council. Cllr ogilvie read out three answers, none of which clarified matters. Cllr hellyer asked if Cllrs had questioned a valuation for a wall in st leonards road, he failed to see why a wall would require valueing and he also failed to see why we should be paying for a lease for Christie Elite when we had been charged in the previous year for the same thing. it was decided that Community Councillors would meet with Mark Palmer this year to seek answers to some of these questions, including the high cost of administration of the account. SpotLight Parliament Blog

“ Parliament Blog recently I was delighted to be asked to visit the Highland Gliding Club, who are based at an airfield south of elgin. the occasion was the official opening of their new hanger - built to replace one that had collapsed under the wait of snow over 18 months ago, causing major damage to the gliders inside at the time. two things struck me, firstly the fact that the impact of that severe weather can, in many cases, take a considerable amount of time and there will be people elsewhere in moray and in the North who are still in the process of recovering from that. Secondly - the hanger is something of a phoenix from the ashes. the necessity of coming together in adversity has, I believe, made the club stronger. they now have a better facility than before and are looking to the future. It was also wonderful to get a birds eye view of moray in one of the gliders and I would recommend it for anyone thinking of trying something new!

In early September I was delighted to welcome my Scottish Government Cabinet colleagues to elgin, where we held the 4th of our summer cabinets that take us around Scotland. It was, of course, a further opportunity to recognise the community effort to retain raF lossiemouth and challenges facing the community around Kinloss as they go through a transitional period, however it was also a chance to see many of the sports available in moray being demonstrated in the Cooper park. Sports activity was a key theme for the visit and it was great to see coaches, young people and adults all demonstrating their skills in some of the less wellknown sports as well as those we would all recognise. a big thank you to everyone who came out to show off their skills, ask the questions in the town Hall and take time out of their day to talk to us. It was very productive and I personally got a great deal out of the day, as I know the rest of the cabinet did as well.

Dreaming of... ...a Skiing Holiday

At this time of year our minds turn to that wonderful winter pastime – the skiing holiday. Europe has become closer and closer with dedicated flights from Scottish airports, mainly Edinburgh and Glasgow with some from Aberdeen. A good skiing holiday is a total change to your normal routines, but it is not a lazy option – skiing or snowboarding use muscles that we don't otherwise use every day, and although exhilarating it can be hard work to ski all day every day for a week or a fortnight. It is a great advantage to be able to test your interest in skiing at a Scottish resort – if you like it you can continue to use the local facilities at weekends but it is tempting to go to the greater snow fields of Europe, and then the ultimate treat is in North America and Canada. In Europe the popular countries are France, Switzerland and Austria. French resorts tend to be high such as Tignes (the highest in France) or Chamonix which is a small French industrial town surrounded by three clear skiing areas. Swiss resorts tend to be picturesque and Alpine-like, including Verbier and Zermatt – Verbier is high with good skiing, and is a mecca for the British if that is what you want, whereas Zermatt has retained its charm as a Swiss-style resort. Austria, although not the highest resorts, offers the most charming and stylised such as Kitzbuhel and St Anton. The west coast of Canada has wonderful skiing in Banff, Lake Louise and Whistler, where the winter Olympics were held in 2010. Whistler offers so much choice there are even 2 mountains to choose from, both offering guides to show you round. The ski lifts are generally larger and wider than European ones, as are the pistes, and the mountain restaurants are enormous and modern, but very efficient. The ski police keep you on your toes. The final but very important consideration is the cost of your skiing holiday. The key components are your flights, your accommodation, your food and drink bills, your equipment hire (skis or snowboard and boots), and your lift passes, but these can range enormously in price and there are always some very good deals around. Switzerland is likely to feel the most expensive this season for the British due to the current very strong Swiss Franc.

recipe

Chef’s Confidential As the nights draw in there is a sense that winter is on the way and without being alarmist I thought I would talk about whisky and food this month, in particular sharing with you my recipe for Whisky Christmas Cake. This is a real family favourite during the festive period and now is the best time to make it and let it mature over the coming weeks. Whilst I am not one for putting the best single malts into the cake it is worth using a really good blended whisky that is full of character and flavour. My favourite for this recipe is Chivas Regal 12 year old, it has a lovely fruity and toffee aroma and when steeping the fruit in it brings out the most amazing flavours. Any good blended whisky can be used.

Whisky Christmas Cake Preheat the oven to 170°C (150°C fan oven) Gas Mark 3 Dried Fruit

350g

Ready to eat prunes

150g

Grated lemon rind and juice

1 lemon

Chivas Regal

150ml

Whisky Liqueur

30ml

Softened butter

225g

Ground Almonds

50g

Muscovado Sugar

225g

Large eggs

3

Wholemeal Self raising flour

225g

Mixed Spice

1.5 tsp

Cinnamon

1 tsp

Method 1. Soak the dried fruit, prunes and grated lemon rind in a bowl with the whisky and whisky liqueur. Soak at least overnight but preferably longer. 2. Grease and line the base and sides of an 20.5com round cake tine, with a removeable base. Use a double thickness of baking parchment. Wrap a double thickness of brown parcel paper around the outside of the tin and secure with string. 3. Using an electric hand mixer beat together the soft butter and sugar. Add the eggs a little at a time and continue beating until smooth. Mix the flour and spices together and using a large metal spoon add gradually to the egg and butter mixture. Finally add the ground almonds. 4. Place half the soaked fruit into a food processor and pulse to a puree. Add this and the rest of the fruit to the rest of the mix and combine well. 5. Spoon into the cake tin and place in the oven on a centre shelf, for 2 .25 to 2.75 hours. 6. Remove from the oven after the minimum cooking time and test using a skewer to see if cooked. The skewer should come out clean. If it doesn't place back in the oven and check after a further 15-20mins. If the cake starts to look quite dark on the top, cover with brown paper with a whole cut in the middle to prevent it getting too discoloured. 7. When cooked, allow the cake to cool in the tin before removing the lining paper. If storing for Christmas then leave the lining paper on, cover with foil and finally cling film and store in a cool dry cupboard until you are ready to decorate.

Since losing my funding for employing someone earlier this year, I now don’t have a specific paid driver to take me to performances, so it has been a case of relying on the goodwill of family and friends. When we arrive at the wedding venue I usually need help to set up my harp and Amplifier. During the ceremony I also need verbal prompts when it’s the right moment to play. It’s a nerve-wracking but enjoyable experience, being a part of a couples’ special day.

7KH %LUG 0DQ WINTER APPROACHES

Long Tailed Duck

As winter approaches a truly remarkable spectacle begins along the coastline of Moray - the arrival of thousands of wintering sea ducks. Pick a calm sunny day, arm yourself with binoculars (and telescope if you have one), a flask of hot drink, a notebook and field guide and head to a coastal headland or harbour, for example Alturlie Point outside Inverness, Nairn Harbour, Findhorn bay, Burghead or Lossiemouth. Carefully scan across the water surface and what originally appeared to be empty sea will transform into a mass of whirring wings and rafts of roosting ducks. Common Eiders are usually fairly near to shore. The males are in their smart black and white plumage and if you look closer you will see a pink blush of colour on the breast and muted Eider

green patches on the neck. Listen carefully and you may hear the distinctive call, a Frankie Howerd like “oooaaa sounding like the birds are finding out a bit of salacious gossip from their neighbour. Even the females

with their dull brown feathers warrant a second look and you will notice subtle differences in the browns and blacks and the intricate overall barred pattern. A similar species that is present at this time is the Long Tailed Duck. These birds arrive in Moray in internationally important numbers with estimates of over 25,000 individuals overwintering here. Slighter built than the Eider the male sports elongated tail feathers that bend and flex in the breeze. Look closer at these birds and you will see the smart contrasts of browns on the face and the pink patch stretching across the bill. Their call is a musical yodelling that carries a good distance over calm seas. Along with the arrival of the ducks we also encounter different garden birds and next month we will be looking at two winter thrushes - Redwings and Fieldfares - and how to tell them apart. So until next month “Good Birding.

nature The Red Deer rut With the summer migrants having left for warmer climes and the Calling Stag winter migrants just starting to arrive, October is a bit of a watershed month for the keen wildlife watcher. However, it also brings one of the most dramatic events in the wildlife calendar, the red deer (Cervus elaphus) rut. From late September, the hills and glens resound to the calls of roaring stags, a sound I have heard described as “a cross between a chainsaw and a burp!” The calls are an attempt by the stags to establish their superiority over other stags, claiming the right to mate with a group of hinds.

Look out also for the stags apparently digging the vegetation by tossing their head, lifting heather and bracken as they do. They are actually spraying themselves to give a distinctive scent, to attract the Red Deer fawn hinds. Not quite old spice but it seems to work for the hinds! After mating, the hinds go through an eight month gestation period with the young born in June the following year, when they are left hidden in long vegetation for the first few weeks, safe from predators such as golden eagle.

October

Often, the roaring alone is not enough to ward off rivals and a challenger will try to penetrate the group to mate with the hinds himself. This challenge is usually met by simply chasing off the would be usurper, however occasionally when two stags are very evenly matched a spectacular clash of antlers can occur, with both stags determinedly fighting for the right to spread their genes. These clashes are usually short lived with no real damage done. However, very occasionally they may end in serious injury or even death.

The stags shed their antlers in April, with a full new set re-growing by the end of August, ready for the rut. In the wilds, the antlers rarely grow beyond 16 points (tines) whilst in captivity or where they have easy access to good grazing they can grow much larger. Stags will often eat the shed antlers, providing their bodies with much needed resources for the regrowth of new antlers. Whilst a stags cannot be accurately aged by it's points, generally the more points, the older the animal. A 12 point stag is a Royal, 14 an Imperial and a 16 pointer is a Monarch. Great places to see the rut around Inverness include Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Strathconon. I also run trips to see the rut throughout October , with a full interpretation of the activity – further details on the web site (below)

DON’T GET THE WRONG IDEA! Men have many strange, un-scriptural ideas about what it takes to be forgiven and be at peace with God. WHO TOLD YOU THAT...all you have to do is live a good life and God will then accept you? Does God say that your best is good enough for you to be acceptable to Him? God’s viewpoint is “There is none righteous, no, not one.” Romans 3:10. Why is this true? God states, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23. God cannot accept you because you have already sinned. WHO TOLD YOU THAT... being a member of a church would get you into Heaven? To get into Heaven God must deal with your sin problem. Joining a church will not save you. You need forgiveness and cleansing so that God can associate with you. This change is a spiritual birth where God causes a brandnew spiritual nature to live in you. The Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” II Corinthians 5:17. To be forgiven and associate with God you need to be born again. “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3.

WHO TOLD YOU THAT.... obeying God’s law will save you? It is too late. God’s Word states, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” James 2: 10. Every one of us has broken at least one of God’s laws. WHO TOLD YOU THAT... loving every one has anything to do with being saved? This is commendable, however we are separated from God because of our sin nature. Even a sinful person can be loving, however he is stiIl sinful until God removes the stain in Christ.

Men have many strange, un-scriptural ideas about what it takes to be forgiven and be at peace with God. That we can be forgiven and enter a peaceful relationship with God is a matter of scriptural record. Romans 5: I states, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Have you

found forgiveness and peace with God, dear reader?

What must you do to be saved? Go to God in prayer and acknowledge that you are a sinner and need His help. Understand that Jesus Christ died on the Cross to pay God’s penalty for your sins. Ask WHO TOLD YOU THAT ... baptism will save God to accept this death on your behalf. Invite you? Bible baptism has nothing to do with Jesus Christ into your life as your Lord and Saviour, washing away sin, which is our problem before a to live and reign within you. I urge you to turn holy God. The Apostle Peter wrote that baptism to God now, that you may be saved. is, “Not the putting away of the filth of the flesh...” I Peter 3:21. Baptism with water is the vivid You can be saved today if you will come to God symbol of the changed life of one who has a and accept His sacrifice for you. conscience at peace with God through faith in Christ. Will you respond to Him today?
