I think sometimes we convince ourselves that, by its very nature, change is good, whereas I often find that it can bring challenges which it is all too easy to underestimate. Not always, but sometimes, we may actually be better off sticking with what we know or at least trying to minimise the volume of change that we take on at any one time. The theory that change is always good sounds a bit like “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” - well I have a road next to mine!!

“A change is as a good as a rest.” I’m not sure who first said that and I’m not entirely sure I agree. It’s certainly nice to have a rest, but is it “a change” that will bring this about?

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS At the Cross Of the many landmarks in and around the town of Forres, the Market Cross is probably the most familiar because of its prominent position in the centre of the town. The history of this monument stretches back for centuries, with the present cross having been erected in 1844 by public subscription. In the olden days, many events took place around the cross; important proclamations were made, wrongdoers were punished and goods were bought and sold at the markets, to name just a few. Today, the Market Cross is little more than a tourist attraction, or the place to gather for bringing in the new year, but nevertheless it stands to remind us of days that are past when it literally was the centre of the town. The prominence of the Market Cross would remind us of another cross, one which was erected nearly 2000 years ago. It was not a grand piece of architecture raised in the centre of a town, but a crudely constructed, rough, wooden cross lifted up outside the walls of a city.

The importance of this cross is seen when we realise that today, it is still the centre of God’s purposes for mankind, including the people of Forres in 2016. On the basis of what was accomplished on that cross, God has important news to proclaim: the wrongdoer, or to use the Bible word, the sinner, can be freely forgiven, for the price is paid in full. Read on! The old rugged cross reveals God’s love for us all. It is true that God has declared “All have sinned”. Therefore, because of our sins, we deserve the punishment of God, which is to be separated from Him eternally. With this condemnation in mind, we consider the scene at Calvary where Jesus Christ died, and we ponder these momentous words “God commendeth His love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”: furthermore “Christ died for our sins”. We are the ones who are guilty, yet when nailed to the cross, the Lord Jesus suffered the punishment of God which was due to us. From the scene of the cross the Word of God now proclaims: “The gift of God is

eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. Instead of the punishment that our sins deserve, God offers eternal life. Not something which we can buy in a market, but a gift offered freely from God, the cost having been paid in full by the death of the Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary. If you are willing to confess to God that you are a sinner, accepting by faith that Jesus Christ died for your sins on the cross, and ask God for His forgiveness, He’ll proclaim: “There is therefore now no condemnation”. You the sinner will be forgiven, not punished, and will possess the gift of eternal life. Then, like the hymn writer, you too will “cherish the old rugged cross”. PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES Moray is a beautiful part of Scotland and we all have a duty to keep it clean and prevent litter. Moray is generally a clean area but there are litter hot spots that need dealt with particularly on local roads and it's important that tackling litter is made a priority especially given this the importance of the tourist season as well as for community morale Thankfully many local people give up their own time to keep our streets and countryside clean, who deserve praise and recognition. However, the Council and other organisations such as the Crown Estate and Forestry Commission must also recognise more needs to be done and they have a role to play. In September I held a litter summit to discuss how these organisations can work together to keep our communities, our beaches, and our countryside looking tidy. It’s vital that volunteers and local people who do their bit for our communities are supported by these organisations. Richard Lochhead MSP

I have been reflecting on an interesting summer with various events and visits over the summer months across the constituency. I was pleased to meet up with businesses new and old in Buckie; getting around Highland Games and community events across the region; meeting German visitors from Landshut to Elgin celebrating a 60 year twinning anniversary; meeting farmers at Keith Show and folk at Forres Area Community Trust. That and much more has been happening but I mention a few of the things I have been involved in to highlight the diversity of activity that takes place in Moray, not just in the summer but all year round, and it is a real pleasure to meet up with folk and hear what they are involved in and what is important to both individuals and the communities they live and work in. It’s a wonderful area to represent and a real privilege to do so.

Every year Electoral Registration Officers must issue households in their area with an enquiry form, to know who is eligible to vote at each property. Enquiry forms were issued to properties in your area on 15 August 2016. Non response to the final reminder will result in a visit from a doorstep canvasser.

You can respond by internet, telephone or SMS message – just follow the instructions sent with your form. This is the cheapest way for you to provide us with the information and saves taxpayers’ money. Alternatively, complete the paper form and return to us, postage is free. So far, over £9,800 of taxpayers’ money has been saved in postages due to responses made by the internet, telephone or SMS. Not already registered? If your name does not appear on your household enquiry form, you will need to register to vote. The easiest way to register is online at

www.gov.uk/register-to-vote Not being on the electoral register can affect your credit rating.

Hearty, Wholesome & Flavoursome Early evening, after work and there’s a nip in the air. It’s Autumn and my friend and I are hungry. Baked Camembert - bursting with flavour, lovely, smooth & luxurious starter. Soft, creamy middle and oozing with yumminess! complemented by beautifully sized, crisp fingers of bread to dip. Scrumptious! Scottish Smoked Salmon - Tasty and fresh. This was nicely presented, very good amount of meaty salmon, slice of chunky bread & complemented by a light, crisp salad and capers. Chicken Tikka - great colour, lovely chunky vegetables and a fabulous aroma. The rice was cooked perfectly & very good sized, balanced portions. Naan bread fantastically light with just the right consistency of chew and crisp. Very enjoyable. Spicy Marinated Chicken Skewers - medium spiced and very tasty chunks of meat. Good portion of crispy chips and salad. Perfect infusion of flavours, not overbearing and the chicken tender. Nicely done - Simple but delicious. Lemon Tart - a wonderful, decadent, shortcrust, rich tart with a zesty lemon filling, delicious without being overwhelming. Light, scrumptious and served with a tangy, sweet and tantalising raspberry. All the flavours complemented each other extremely well, making this an absolutely a top notch dessert, couldn't fault it at all. Compliments to the Chef, Briony Thom. My friend and I left very satisfied & happy to report that The Red Lion caters for all ages, providing a nice homely lounge, an extremely good value for money & varied menu. They have a really nice bunch of friendly staff, who gave great service and a chef that cooks beautiful food. A highly recommended place to go where you are guaranteed to sit comfortably, enjoy a good sized, hearty, meal - nicely presented and promptly served by attentive staff - and spend a relaxed time in a very sociable warm & friendly atmosphere.

Nice to see a noticeable presence of the proprietor, Carrie Custodio, who was friendly, respectful and who clearly had command of a well managed, & equally friendly, team of staff.

GreenThumb GreenThumb

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

The Moss Season Approaches We live in a cool maritime climate, which is ideal for moss to thrive. You cannot change the weather, and you cannot banish moss permanently, but you can control its’ infestation with some basic good husbandry, and a bit of work. I’m talking about scarifying again of course. This will also be featuring in all the TV gardening programmes and magazines about now, and it is what we at GreenThumb spend all winter doing. We will have 3 heavy blade scarifier machines out clearing (at the last count) 700 lawns round here. – oh joy !

for the grass, and some recovery time is required, during which time it looks pretty shabby. Doing it off-season allows recovery, then you put on a spring feed, and have a season of decent grass to mow. Enjoy !

Scarifying moss and thatch out is undertaken to clear the lawn surface of all the dead material and moss to allow fresh grass plants to dominate the lawn environment, providing the best conditions for absorbsion of sunlight, moisture and nutrients. If this task is overlooked (or avoided), the following season there is even more build-up, and in no time, the lawn is more moss than grass. There’s no getting away from it, this is hard work and often generates haystacks of debris (see picture). It can be done by hand with a spring rake, but some mechanical help is really the best option for anything more than quite a small lawn. You can hire a blade scarifier for the day at some garden machinery centres, but be warned, these are pretty vicious machines and it’s only too easy to “plough” your garden, and then need a new lawn ! An “average” lawn usually takes 2 experienced crew half a day to do with machines and blowers.

For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN

The best time to tackle this is either side of Christmas. Scarifying is never recommended in the growing season because the very nature of the exercise is pretty traumatic
