The Editor

Summer went by in a blur for me. One minute I was looking forward to the longer days and nights and then, all of a sudden, the temperatures seem to be edging down and it’s getting darker earlier again. I think I must be a summer fiend. - I love wearing shorts and fiercely resist the onset of Autumn, although I do really love the autumn colours greens slowly morphing to browns, yellows and reds. And then, of course, we can start looking forward to Christmas!! well, perhaps not just yet!!

Bluevale, Heysmoor, and Holbrook; ring any bells? Have you ever heard of them? They are residential tower blocks in Glasgow, Liverpool, and Birmingham, respectively. Why have you probably not heard of them? Maybe because they are places where quite deprived and poorer people live, but probably because nothing out of the ordinary has happened in these places. Who would have thought that the whole country would come to know the name of one particular tower block in North Kensington? Nevertheless, ‘Grenfell Tower’ is now widely known and will be remembered, sadly, for all the wrong reasons. The tragedy that has befallen that community has been truly horrific. Inadequate fire escapes and no sprinkler systems may have furthered the catastrophe which people unexpectedly awoke to find themselves having to face. With the average housing price in North Kensington being £758,334, one has to ask why the residents of these flats were so underinvested in and so thoughtlessly left to live in such a precarious environment. The Bible has a lot to say about the poor and those who neglect them because they are poor. However, the same type of cladding that

was used on Grenfell Tower has also been used on a number of swanky business buildings and financially lucrative hotels too, so this tragedy is not a moment for politicians to score cheap political points over claiming THEY are the ones who REALLY care for poor. Although there will be grief and anger over how something like this could happen, the fact remains, a number of people went to sleep one night and didn’t live to see the sun rise the next day. There are two accounts of horrendous events in the New Testament and it’s interesting how Jesus responds to them. We read in Luke’s Gospel: ‘At this time some people came to Jesus. They told Him that Pilate had killed some people from the country of Galilee. It was while they were giving gifts of animals on the altar in worship to God. Pilate put their blood together with the blood of the animals. Jesus said to them, “What about these people from Galilee? Were they worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee because they suffered these things?’ And his answer? ‘No, I tell you. But unless you are sorry for your sins and turn from them, you too will all die.’ Jesus then gives another example: ‘What about those eighteen men who

were killed when the high building in Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were the worst sinners living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you. But unless you are sorry for your sins and turn from them, you too will all die.’ Luke 13 (NLV) You see, sometimes the manner of a person’s death makes the headlines, especially if a group of people die in the same incident, but about 1500 people die each and every day in the UK alone. Most of these will go unnoticed by the population at large but each and every day, people pass from death to life. Jesus’ lesson to his disciples was, turning away from sin and receiving forgiveness for them, is the only way to ensure both fullness of life here on earth and eternal life in heaven. I have a friend who is currently terminally ill and she is longing to leave this mortal world and go home to her heavenly Father; death holds no fear for her. Death can turn up un-expectantly (and often does) but for those who trust in Christ, death is merely the gateway to greater and fuller life, as they go to be with the One who is the ‘way, the truth and the life.’

Summer is behind us but as we head into the Autumn we can reflect on the fact that there is always lots to see and do in Moray. The huge range and variety of community events brought visitors to the area and local people together. Whether it was Keith Show, one of our spectacular Highland Games or a village fete I enjoyed over the summer; we’re all grateful for the massive amount of work that was undertaken by all the volunteers and organisers to ensure the events were a success. I’ve been delighted to welcome individual Moray constituents, families and larger groups to Westminster since my election and would be pleased to meet anyone else who is interested in visiting the House of Commons. As always I can be contacted on douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk or via my constituency office at 63 High Street, Forres IV36 1PB or on 01309 679253.

We had a family holiday in Copenhagen this summer – a city where 50% of folk commute by bike every day. Even my dad - at 73yrs old – took advantage of the nearly 400km of cycle lanes to get around. New cycleways are flourishing locally too – including the River Lossie cycleway and the Inverness South Campus bridge The benefits are obvious. The number of commuters choosing to cycle to work regularly in Inverness has increased to nearly 10% and a recent study shows that pedalling commuters are less stressed. We might not be able to ditch cars entirely up here, but I for one will continue to promote active transport, including safe cycling, to improve congestion and reduce our carbon footprint AND our stress levels.

After a summer jam packed with fantastic events across Moray, September kicks off with the return of the Spirit of Speyside: Distilled festival. On Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd September Elgin Town Hall will be transformed into a showcase of the very best of Moray’s food and drink industry, bringing together Speyside’s most famous whisky producers. Last year was the very first year of Distilled and having gone along with friends, I can say that without doubt it was a triumph. With local whisky, craft beer, gin and food all under one roof, it has all the ingredients to be an annual success. Distilled is a fantastic addition to the Moray calendar and complements the annual Spirit of Speyside, and I’m very much looking forward to popping along again this year.

(Romans 3:19)

Reader, God did not give the Ten Commandments as a means of approach and acceptance with Him if you kept them, but to show you that you cannot keep them, because you are a sinner and separated by your sins from Him. You have a need of a Saviour, that your sins might be washed away. All have sinned, all need the Saviour which is Christ the Lord. He alone is the way, the truth and the life the only way back to God for you. Do you know the Lord Jesus as your Saviour?

THE DROUTHY COBBLER

September brings more top-class acts to the Drouthy Cobbler. On the 1st, Irie Yo-Yo, an 8 piece ska/reggae band from Edinburgh who mix in a bit of drum and bass, jazz, Latin and dub into their sound. Filled with plenty of infectious grooves, they’re bound to get feet tapping. Following this on the 2nd, Scotland based Lizabett Russo brings her blend of native music with elements of contemporary jazz, avant garde folk and world music, all backed up by her powerfully versatile voice. The music continues on the 7th with a gig from Jeffrey Lewis, supported by Mathias Kom & Ariel Sharratt from the band ‘The Burning Hell’. Lewis is one of the music world’s most revered indie artists, gaining praise from magazines such as ‘Rolling Stone’ and the ‘NME’, while also gaining the respect of his peers in the music industry, with a wide variety of acts citing their love for him, including Death Cab For Cutie, Interpol, Will Oldham and Jarvis Cocker who calls him “The best lyricist working in the US today.” Definitely not to be missed. Siobhan Wilson returns on the 9th. Born in Elgin, Siobhan spent time in Paris before returning to Scotland. Now living in Glasgow, she is making a name for herself with the like of the BBC’s Lauren Laverne and Vic Galloway heaping praise on her voice, melodies and instrumentation. Their music offerings end with the amazing James Brown Is Annie. An Edinburgh based jazz/funk band, they have shared a stage with some of the world’s finest bands including Average White Band, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Hayseed Dixie and The Blockheads. They have also gained high praise from publications, with The Scotsman calling them “a perfect example of how much fun funk can be” and the Daily Record saying they were "A contender for Scottish Album of the Year.” Fans of comedy have a lot to look forward to in September. As well as the monthly Comedy Club on the 27th, they also have two solo shows. Scottish comedian Gareth Mutch brings his debut Edinburgh Fringe show ‘Mutch Ado About Nothing’ to Elgin on the 8th. Full of tales of personal woe, failed relationships and living with his parents, Mutch proves that you don’t need a big political message to get big laughs. Finally, on the 17th, Canadian comedian Craig Campbell presents his ‘Easy Tiger’ show. Having performed in the UK on programmes such as Russell Howard’s Good News and Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, as well as opening for Frankie Boyle on his 2010 and 2012 tours, he has been described as ‘one of the finest comics in the world’ and ‘a genuine genius’ by his fellow comedians. ‘Easy Tiger’ is about the intricacies and oddities of life in the UK as a Canadian, dissecting the stand-offish British psyche and regaling tales of passive aggressive hospitality.

Should I Put an Autumn Feed on the Grass ? Most folk doing just the basics to keep the grass in reasonable condition will generally think about putting on a feed in the spring,

This is only part of the control required however. Once the current growth has been killed off, it should be scarified out with a rake, or a scarifying machine, so the grass goes through the winter with a reduced amount of material on the surface, which is actually a favourable habitat for more moss to grow, if left uncleared,! Scarifying is a topic on it’s own which I might cover next month. September is the last month when you might hope to get seed to germinate in Scotland. You need a ground temperature of 10C, so if you want to do any end of season repairs, don’t delay.

and a feed in the autumn. They are quite different recipes though. A spring feed should mainly feature nitrogen to get it growing again after the winter, and put some colour into the leaf. The autumn feed should contain iron (ferrous sulphate) to control moss growth, and winter nutrients to help the roots through the winter. We use a soluble iron mix to make up a 5 gallon backpack sprayer, which makes for an even application. Many of you will have put down an autumn feed and seen the moss turn brown/black, pretty much overnight. This is caused by the iron in the mix, which dehydrates the top growth of moss, killing it off.

Chef’s Confidential

Lemon Verbena Panna Cotta (serves around 4) Panna cotta (Italian for "cooked cream") is an Italian dessert of sweetened cream thickened with gelatin and molded. The name panna cotta, although, is not mentioned in Italian cookbooks before the 1960s, yet it is often cited as a traditional dessert of the northern Italian region of Piedmont. One (undocumented) story says that it was invented by a Hungarian woman in the Langhe in the early 1900s. Whatever it’s history - it is really Yummy! Ingredients: 500ml double cream 10 leaves lemon verbena 150 ml full fat milk (blue top) 110g caster sugar 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/2 leaves of gelatine Method: Soak the gelatine leaves for about 10 minutes in cold water. This process is called blooming. In a large saucepan, bring the cream and lemon verbena to a rolling boil for 2 minutes, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and leave to infuse. In another pan, heat the milk and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Squeeze the excess water from the gelatine leaves then stir them into the milk mixture until dissolved. Add the milk and sugar mixture into the infused cream whisk carefully. Using a fine sieve, strain the mixture into a large pouring jug and fill dariole moulds which should be very lightly oiled to prevent sticking. Set in the fridge for at least 5 hours, serve with fresh berries and mint. We source our Lemon Verbena along with other edible flowers from Wendy & Kirsty who run "The Teeny Weeny Farm" in Dyke.

INNES HOUSE

Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

Offer extended! Any couple booking their wedding within six months of their wedding date, will be offered a complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a 'Champagne Toast' upgrade of their chosen drinks package

(Zechariah 3:3)

Reader, you need to see yourself as you are in reality before God, which is a sinner soaked in sins and separated and defiled before Him. There is none righteous, no not one, all have sinned and therefore all need the cleansing blood of The Lord Jesus’ sacrifice on Calvary’s Cross applied to them personally that they might be washed clean and be made righteous before God. Even the righteousness of God which is by faith in Jesus Christ unto all but only upon all them that believe. Are you washed?
