PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Just a coincidence? I don’t think it would be an overexaggeration to suggest that many of us have been left bewildered by events or circumstances that we might refer to as “strange coincidences”. They can stay with us for the rest of our lives. Perhaps they remain quietly abandoned in our memories as unexplained occurrences, or perhaps something continues to stir in us upon reflection of a sequence of events that we’re convinced became lifechanging. This was certainly the case for an elderly lady I spoke with recently whilst on holiday, who told me how her first husband had tragically succumbed to cancer and how unintentionally, during the few years following his death, she had married again. Her joyful words resonated like church bells as she recounted numerous coincidences that she could not fathom but clearly believed had acted in bringing her together with her second husband. It was her concluding remark that really caught my ear. She finished by saying, with a heartfelt conviction, “it’s as though someone up there was watching over me.” Her words ring true. Our conversation brought to mind the personal testimonies of many Christian believers who, before actively following the Christian faith, clearly recall a time when those unexplained coincidences gave way to a deep sense of the
presence of God – the “someone up there.” Why are some of us stirred to a point of acknowledging God’s presence whilst many dismiss God altogether, attributing every profound experience as a consequence of chance or fate? As always, the answer can found in the Bible. As Jesus promised, God’s Holy Spirit still searches for receptive hearts prepared to take hold of his message of truth, but some hearts will remain hardened. In the Gospels of the New Testament we read about many people coming in the presence of Jesus, listening to his message of salvation and witnessing his miracles. Still they ‘would not believe him’. If you take a moment to read in John chapter twelve, you find Jesus crying out, ”I have come into the world as light, so that no-one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” In the same outpouring of words Jesus reminds us that his life was devoted to bringing this message of truth and whose life was not led nor fulfilled by strange coincidences but rather by the presence of God: “For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. I know that his command leads to eternal life.” Unlike Christ, none of us are born perfect believers, but God has not given up on us. We can count ourselves blessed as we come to know God’s abundant grace

in his desire to bring this message of truth, just has Jesus promised and still promises to those with receptive hearts. As I was reminded in conversation with the elderly lady, those coincidences can be used greatly by God to reveal himself to us. Some of us may continue to hold on to the bewilderment of each coincidence, some may go further in acknowledging a spiritual presence, and some may go round in circles in seeking the nature of “a” presence. Some will think they know of God’s presence. Some will deny God’s presence. Most will not believe. Thankfully, some of us no longer live in the dark shadow of coincidence. In the light of Christ’s message of truth, we look back at those coincidences with the certainty of God’s hand upon our lives – some of us have acknowledged and have grown to love the “someone up there”.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES While the Parliament has been closed for the summer it does not mean a long holiday for MPs, but rather it is an opportunity for us to spend more time with our constituents. It is also an opportunity for people in Moray to let us know their views on local and national events in recent months that concern them the most. To that end I joined Richard Lochhead MSP on a series of local surgeries throughout the constituency. A recurring theme this year has been the government’s decision to press ahead with privatisation plans for Royal Mail. People in Moray are rightly concerned about this. They are well aware of the increasing problems we have with deliveries to our rural communities and how, quite often, we are asked to pay a premium, in particular when ordering online - an everincreasing aspect of modern life. Along with my SNP colleagues at Westminster we will be doing everything possible to fight these plans. To that end, I will welcome hearing from more of you on the future of Royal Mail and on the general issue of excessive or unwarranted delivery charges being levied on Moray customers.
Alcohol and Drugs misuse remains a major issue in Scotland but it is gratifying to know that, at a local level, we are doing a great deal to help those affected. I had the honour to open a workshop organised by the Moray Alcohol and Drug Partnership (MADP) in Elgin. This was held on the week we learned the latest figures from NHS Scotland showing 100% of Alcohol and Drugs clients in Moray who required treatment received it inside three weeks. This highlighted just one of the many successes the partnership has achieved since it was formed in 2009. The MADP is one of 30 partnerships in Scotland, established to provide the best response to national strategies on alcohol, drugs and volatile substances. Their primary goal is to reduce the impact of alcohol and drugs use on communities, something they do by coordinating the work of a number of agencies including Moray Council, Grampian Police, NHS Grampian and a variety of local and national third-sector agencies. Work being done by all those involved in MADP is making a significant impact not only on those who suffer the consequences of Alcohol and Drug misuse but on their immediate families and the wider community.

Dreaming of... River Cruising
River Cruising is a part of the travel market growing in popularity each year. For centuries people have travelled Europe’s mighty rivers and waterways to trade, explore and sometimes conquer! Steeped in history and culture, flowing through stunning scenery, they form natural links connecting the continent’s greatest and most beautiful towns and cities, from the medieval to the modern. You can cruise on the majestic Rhine and Danube – Europe’s essential arteries studded by atmospheric cities like Koblenz and Vienna. Standing guard you will see astonishing fairytale castles whilst learning about mythical legends, historic strife and triumph. You can be on the magical, meandering Moselle with its impossibly steep, riverside vineyards and lesser known, yet equally beautiful River Main, twisting through Germany’s rural heart. The Elbe, meandering through Saxon Switzerland, connects historic Berlin and baroque Dresden, whilst in France, the Rhone flows majestically from almost the Burgundy vineyards to Avignon and van Gogh’s Arles, in the heart of sun-kissed Provence. River Cruising has the huge advantage like Ocean Cruising that you unpack your case only once into your cabin, and your cabin moves around with you all the time. You can leave your belongings in the care and security of the ship’s company while you go ashore to see the sights, probably having had a lecture on them before arriving at that particular place. Another good part of the world for River Cruising is in Vietnam and Cambodia, and indeed it is a very effective way of seeing much of these countries properly. Imagine boarding your River boat at Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and moving up the Mekong River through Phnom Penh, to Siem Reap and ultimately Angkor Wat. This trip takes 14nts from the UK, and takes in a 2nt stay in Saigon, and a Mekong River Cruise through Cai Be, Sa Dec, Tan Chau, Phnom Penh, Chong Koh, Kampong Chhnang, Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. Whatever the budget there is a River Cruise for you, and many are very good value for money as long as they are purchased from a trustworthy source.

Caring about...
End of Season Clear Out ! After many poor years, we’ve finally had an acceptable summer around the Moray Firth. In fact, many folk had obviously forgotten about the sprinkler in the shed, and in the hot weather in July the grass dried out and browned off, just like any other plant if it isn’t watered. It’s usually a short-lived

feature of our climate here though and most lawns have recovered unscathed by now. A lasting benefit of some dry weather though, is we hope there will have been less moss growth this year. LAWN ANALYSIS on 01667 460012, or email us at:
Why does a lawn need scarified I hear you ask ? I think it’s rather like cleaning windows, you need to do it fairly regularly otherwise eventually you’ll have a rather filthy piece of glass, pretty useless as a window. It’s the same with the grass. Over time, it will fill up with old debris and form a layer of thatch, which in turn will increasingly provide the perfect habitat for moss to grow. Pretty soon, it’s more moss than grass it seems – a lost cause. Actually no, even badly mossed lawns can be restored quite quickly, in time for next year in fact. Grass is very resilient (given a helping hand) and will survive much abuse.
Why not make the most of our half-decent summer and have a go this autumn, or get us to give you a hand, our advice is completely free by the way.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL COMMUNITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2013 ELECTIONS 2013 The current four-year term of all of the Moray Community Councils ends this September. A postal ballot for the new Community Councils will be held in October in areas where there are sufficient candidates. It is important to have more candidates for each Community Council area than there are seats available so that there has to be an election. This will help to ensure a truly democratic process. This process will also be helped if as many people as possible who are eligible to vote do so. A Community Council is a group of local people set up to represent and promote the interests of their local community. Members are volunteers and are elected by the public. Their main role is to find out the views of the local community as a whole and to make sure that the views of local people are passed on to the Local Authority, and to any other relevant public body or private agency. Community Councils have a statutory right to be consulted on local planning, licensing and other issues. Community Councils were introduced in 1973 and have the full statutory support of the Scottish Government. The current government appears keen to promote community engagement and enhance the role of Community Councils. To be successful, a Community Council needs to attract volunteers who care about their community and who are prepared to work together to ensure that the local voice is heard, and more importantly, listened to by relevant authorities and that each local community receives its fair share of public resources.
If you feel strongly about the well-being and quality of life of your local community you are encouraged to stand as a candidate in the forthcoming Community Council elections. To be eligible you must be 18 or over, reside in the Community Council area and your name must be on the electoral register. It is hoped that throughout Moray there will be a need for many elections and, to make it easier for people to vote, an all-postal voting system for Community Council elections is being used once again in Moray. Everyone on the electoral register will be given a postal vote irrespective of whether or not they have registered for a postal vote in other elections. If you want to know more please contact the Community Council Liaison Officer on 01343 563910 or the Elections Office on 563334. Provisional dates to note: 9 August

IS YOUR LAWN NEEDING A HEALTH CHECK? Beautiful gardens are created by providing the best growing conditions based on a solid foundation of inputs such as fertilizers, water, seed and control products, when necessary. Core aeration - which can be performed in the spring or autumn improves your lawn's health and beauty, optimizes root development and reduces thatch and associated problems. It also deepens your lawn’s root system for greater resistance to disease, insects, drought and heat stress, improves drainage and improves air, fertilizer, water movement.
Hollow Tine Aeration Removes cores from the lawn to de-compact the soil. Tining also helps allow water, nutrients and oxygen to reach the root zone of the grass plant more easily. Scarifying Will thin out and remove much of the thatch and moss which has built up over the last season (which was extremely wet last year) giving room for new shoots to grow and spread for next Spring.
We Create Lush & Healthy Lawns Across The Moray Coast Please phone for your no-obligation survey, analysis & quotation

However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house.
