As we go to press, the news reports are full of stories of displaced people across the globe who appear to be desperate to improve their situation. It to be a genuine appears humanitarian issue with some troubling ramifications if we are unable to respond in a coordinated fashion. Let us hope that ‘the powers that be’ can organise sufficient aid to avoid any loss of life and offer some comfort to those people who have lost or been forced to abandon their homes.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS The harvest is coming… Where I grew up in Essex, September was considered by many of my friends and I to be the worst month of the year, simply because it was the month in which we had to return back to school after the lavishly long summer holidays. Now I can enjoy September for its crisp bright weather and the golden fields of harvest. Many of Jesus’ parables were concerned with farming, crops and harvests, as he lived in a country where vast swathes of the land were given over to producing grain. It was a subject the people of Christ’s day could relate to and understand. Maybe if Jesus had come for the first time in our generation, His parables would be shop and consumer based? There’s one parable of Jesus’ in Matthew 13 which deals with a harvest and the problem of weeds. It’s the story of a good farmer who planted good crops but enemies of the farmer came one night and planted weeds in among the good seed. As the harvest grew, the people noticed the weeds growing up with
the wheat and they asked the owner of the field; ‘shall we tear out the weeds?’
alongside His own people and why evil exists within His good and perfect creation.
Our Forres in Bloom team do a wonderful job in making Forres look great each summer but imagine how they would feel if someone came one Spring night and planted weeds in all their flowerbeds, or sprayed their saplings with weed killer? It wouldn’t be right, it wouldn’t be fair, but what could they do about it? The owner of the field in Jesus’ parable told his workers to leave the weeds alone in case they ended up tearing out the good crops as well as the bad.
When I was at school, the holidays would end and a new school year would begin, just as in any harvest, there comes a time when the crops are gathered in and the weeds are separated.
In Matt. 13:30 we read the owner’s plan: ‘Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’ The owner’s solution was to be patient and careful, to safeguard every crop that was good while disposing of the weeds.
So I guess my question to you is, when God’s harvest comes, will you be wheat or weed? The harvest is coming… and we will all reap what we sow!
Of course, in this parable, Jesus’ real intent was to explain why evil people (the weeds) are allowed to live

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES I’m now back to Parliament after a very busy summer recess in Moray. During the summer break, as well as holding a summer surgery tour and attending community meetings, I enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time with my family and our growing puppy, Cinder. Although the weather was far from fair, it was great to get out for walks at the beach and in our lovely countryside. Another highlight of the summer recess for me was the hugely successful Elgin Food and Drink Festival, which attracted a huge number of visitors from far and wide. The Food and Drink festival is a great family day out and a fantastic opportunity for local food producers, of which Moray has many, to reach out to new customers. I know how hard the team at Elgin BID work to make the Food and Drink festival a success every year and they certainly deserve praise for putting on another fab event this year.
2015 has been an incredible year, but it has also been a year of contemplation and commemoration. I will note just a couple of those important events here. Early July marked the 20th anniversary of the appalling genocide at Srebenica, where 8372 unarmed boys and men were led out of what was supposed to be the UN protected area of Srebrenica and murdered. The 6th August saw the 70th Anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing which killed tens of thousands of people, the consequences of which are still felt. These appalling events in our history should never be forgotten and are a constant reminder of the potential consequences of the decisions that parliaments and governments take. It is a sombre subject matter for this column but it is vital we remember these horrific events and use them to guide our current and future actions in the issues we deal with where many lives can be at stake.

A spring feed should feature nitrogen to get it growing and put some colour into the leaf, the autumn feed should contain iron (ferrous sulphate) to control moss growth, and winter nutrients to help the roots through the winter. We use a soluble powder mix to make up a 5 gallon backpack sprayer, which makes for an even application. Many of you will have put down an autumn feed and seen the moss turn brown/black, pretty much overnight. This is caused by the iron in the mix, which dehydrates the top growth of moss, killing it off. It’s only part of the control required however. Once the current growth has been killed off, it should be scarified out with a rake, or a scarifying machine, so the grass goes through the winter with a reduced amount of material on the surface, which is actually a favourable habitat for more moss to grow! Scarifying is a topic on it’s own which

‘PATTERNS OF CHANGE’ 29th Aug - 21st Sept 6pm - 8pm
www.dinaleigh0.wix.com/ dinaleigh50
SANDRA RILEY
‘SENCE OF PLACE’ 26th Sept - 6th Oct 6pm - 8pm www.sandrariley.co.uk
In this exhibition ‘Patterns of Change’ it becomes evident that Dina Leigh is in search of something deeply elemental, different and very much her own. Her paintings are exquisite but seemingly chaotic, vibrant and full of roaring humanity. An exploration in the flux of change, crossroads experience, growth and death are underpinned with Goethe’s phenomenology and poetry by Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot and Paul Celan. Findhorn based Dina Leigh graduated BA (Hons) and MA Fine Art at the Norwich University of the Arts. This retrospective exhibition will be displaying a selection of her work produced over a decade from 2003-2013. Large-scale mixed media pieces printed on to canvas and often painted into using acrylic paints. Sandra uses her own photographs as a starting point and basis for her work. Light, colour and atmosphere are themes that fascinate her the most. Different places and situations have their own unique energy and atmosphere in time and place.

The QVS experience encourages and develops well-rounded, confident individuals in an environment of stability and continuity. Families are welcome to find out more by contacting Admissions on +44 (0) 131 310 2927 to arrange a visit.
Queen Victoria School Dunblane Perthshire FK15 0JY
www.qvs.org.uk
Queen Victoria School, Dunblane Wendy Bellars, Head Open Morning is Saturday, 19th September 2015 Queen Victoria School (QVS) is a co-educational boarding school fully funded – parents don’t pay fees – by the Ministry of Defence to provide stability and continuity of education for the children of UK Armed Forces personnel who are Scottish, or who have served in Scotland or who have been members of a Scottish regiment. There are 277 pupils in the School, ranging from Primary 7 through to S6. Age-ranges within each year-group are wide, however, because of the very varied and inevitably disrupted educational backgrounds from which the pupils come. One pupil came into S3 having been to 13 different schools; others into P7 having been to eleven different schools – and these are not just different schools, but different education systems as well.
Academic results are consistently well above the national averages, however, and there is a wide programme of extra-curricular activities, Games and the Combined Cadet Force. Major sports are rugby – where QVS is generally considered to “punch well above its weight” as a small school – and hockey, although there is a growing commitment to football as well. QVS pupils and their families greatly value the strength of mutual support in a school community where all recognise the reality of Service life. Set in 45 acres of beautiful Perthshire countryside, Queen Victoria School is easily accessible by road, rail or air.
If QVS pupils were not at the School, they would be attending whichever was the local school in the area in which their parents were posted. QVS has a particular brief from the Ministry of Defence to care for those eligible families who could not otherwise afford boarding education. Ceremonial – piping, drumming, Highland Dancing and drill – constitutes an important part of the life of the School and is a visible link between the pupils and the work that their parents have chosen to do, in the UK Armed Forces. The Pipes, Drums and Dancers of QVS are internationally renowned, having played at tattoos both at home and abroad, most recently in the Basel Christmas Tattoo 2013 and The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2012.
There is no substitute for visiting a school, meeting its pupils and staff and picking up the atmosphere. If you would like to know more before travelling to Dunblane to visit us, however, and to request a DVD, please contact our Admissions Secretary on 0131 310 2927. Alternatively, you can write to: Admissions Secretary, Queen Victoria School, Dunblane, Perthshire FK15 0JY, United Kingdom, or visit our website www.qvs.org.uk
