I.T. Blog - Facebook Fun
How many of you out there are using Facebook? IĘźve personally found it a great tool for connecting with family members and friends that I donĘźt see every day, however it is a security nightmare. Anytime you download a new app or game it wants to access your personal data and that of your friends, then once you stop using the app, if you donĘźt remove it, then it will continue to have access to that data while you forget that it was even there in the first place. I can strongly recommend going into your privacy settings and spending ten minutes to go through all the options carefully. In particular watch out for the hidden ones, such as your DOB which is in your profile and make sure that it isnĘźt available to everyone, otherwise you will be giving away a key piece of info about yourself.
Remember that prospective employers or business associates may well “Googleâ€? you to find out a bit more, do you really want your Facebook profile showing up? It will by default and it may present a view of you that is perfectly suitable for Friends and Family, but is less than desirable for business purposes. It also doesnĘźt help that Facebook periodically change their security settings, so keep an eye on any notices from them and once in a while pop back and double check them, just to be sure.

The Elgin Marvels Fossil Reptiles & Footprints Not to be confused with the Elgin Marbles, the Elgin ʻMarvelsʼ actually come from Elgin! They are 250 million year old fossil reptiles, and their footprints, that were collected from old sandstone quarries, mostly over a century ago. Dr Neil Clark, Curator of Palaeontology at the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow, provides a fascinating insight into our local history. Carol Hopkins, a student at a 1996 Open University Summer School in Edinburgh, had visited the local Clashach quarry at Hopeman and found a vast number of footprints being excavated. The quarry had recently been re-opened to supply stone for the facing of the new Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. By 1997, Carol had investigated over 200 footprints and trackways!
The animals responsible for making these footprints are thought to have been mammal-like reptiles. Fossil skeletons of these animals were known from the nearby Cuttieʼs Hillock west of Elgin and can be seen displayed in the Elgin Museum.
probably not the best way to investigate the cavity as it would damage the fossil so I removed the rock to Glasgow for further research using modern medical techniques. With the help of Calum Adams, a consultant radiologist, at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow and the Royal Alexandra in Paisley, we scanned the hole in the rock using both CT and MRI. It was not easy scanning through such a thickness of rock and the machine had to be tweaked close to its limits. As the CT produced its first scan, we saw something I was not expecting. We saw a difficult to interpret complex network of cavities.
When all the scans were collected and stacked into a 3D image, the nature of the hole in the rock became clear. It was the entire skull of a mammal-like reptile! After this, the rock was placed in a plastic box and filled with fluid to make the MRI scanning work. The whole process was so unusual that the BBC filmed an episode of Tomorrowʼs World on this novel technique of analysing cavity fossils in a non-destructive manner.
Research by Arthur Cruickshank, an expert in such animals, showed that the skull was identical to a known animal from Cuttieʼs Hillock called Dicynodon (Gordonia) traquairi. Because of this discovery, we now know that the age of the Hopeman sandstones is the same age as the Cuttieʼs Hillock sandstones closer to Elgin - 250 million years old.
Also in 1997, Bill George, who worked in the quarry at Clashach, found a rock with an intriguing hole in it. It was immediately thought this may be a cavity left by bones dissolved by acid waters. No recognisable fossil bones had ever been found in the Hopeman sandstone so this discovery was potentially an extremely important one, as the age of the sandstone at Hopeman was not known with any certainty.
At that time, there was really only one way to deal with cavity fossils; to fill the cavity with rubber and smash it open with a hammer to remove the dried rubber. I decided this was page 8 - March 2011

3D Image of the Skull
In March 1998, the quarrying was increased which put a number of critical footprints at risk of being destroyed. The Moray Stone Cutters kindly offered to move the slabs of sandstone containing footprints to a convenient spot, forming an amphitheatre close to the Moray Coastal Trail near Hopeman.

AMS S INDIAN CUISINE

get the truth. then go.
Sam’s Indian Cuisine is in the heart of the city, in an excellent location, just off Academy Street. It offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere to customers. Bookings not necessary but advisable at the weekends due it’s popularity. Owned by Sam Miah he who has been in the Restaurant Industry in the area for the last 20 years, it offers a modern yet homely feel to it, with stylish décor and cosy lit leather booths and soft music in the background sets the scene for an Indian Meal with a difference. The restaurant comfortably caters for around 70 people.
I went for a meal with my husband on a Thursday evening and we were treated to a very enjoyable evening meal, which was very relaxing and compliments to the staff for their very attentive and friendly service. The Menu offered a vast range very reasonable priced Indian Cuisine dishes and it was highly recommended that we tried something from Sam’s Specialities Menu. Once shown to our table we were presented with a mix of Papadums, Chutney and Pickle to enjoy whilst browsing through the menu. We opted to go with the chef’s recommendations for the evening. For starters I had Sam’s Special Platter Vegetarian Option, which was presented with a crispy fresh salad this consisted of mushroom pakora, onion bhaji and vegetable samosa. The other starter was Sam’s Special Meat Platter this was a delicious array of lamb Tikka, chicken Pakora, meat Samosa and chicken kebab all tender and cooked to perfection. We ordered a selection of main courses from Sam’s Specialities Menu, the first was Sali Bolti this
was tender lamb cooked in onions, tomatoes and spices, topped with crispy straw potatoes, the next was Sam’s Special (Malaysian) a delightful dish of flavour cooked with Garlic, Lemon Grass, onions, pepper, green chillies and fresh coconut. The highlight of the meal was the arrival of the Sholey Chicken, cooked with onions, peppers, tomatoes, topped in coriander in ginger sauce and flamed Sambuka served in an iron Karani. These were all served with Pilau Rice and Naan Bread. Each meal was exceptional. After such an exceptional meal we were struggling to find room for dessert but were tempted by the Coppa Ice –Cream range, I had the Chocolate & Custard Pistachio flavour, which was served with a drizzle of sauce and chopped Pistachio on top. Our other option was Mascarpone and Amaretto flavour, which was very enjoyable. Over all i’d give Sam’s 10/10 and would highly recommend this restaurant for its delicious cuisine and comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.

PIL
AT ES
"Pilates and Nordic Walking compliment eachother incredibly well" says Karen Powell, Inverness based Pilates Teacher and British Nordic Walking Instructor. PILATES trains the body to work in its own natural posture, lengthening and strengthening the muscles gently, and so develops yur deep core muscles which support your spine with movement. After practising Pilates for a few months, Karen says that "Often people experience the feeling of having grown taller, of feeling more relaxed, as their posture has improved" NORDIC WALKING uses the same principles of Pilates in its unique walking style, using poles, and also has the benefits of improving stamina and cardiovascular fitness. It uses specially designed poles to enhance your natural walking experience. With a technique similar to the upper body action of classic cross country skiing, it becomes a whole body exercise that can be enjoyed at many levels, from walking for health to athletic Nordic running. Karen Powell is based in Inverness and runs short courses, tailored to suit small groups and individuals. Armed with your own poles and a wee bit of tuition there are many Nordic Walking routes of varying length, both easy and more difficult on your doorstep and easily accessible from Inverness.

Try out some of these scenic alternatives........ Craig Phadrigh Forest - 1-2 mile easy route Ord Hill - 2-4 mile route, undulating Daviot Forest - 2-4 mile route, fairly flat Caledonian Canal for Inverness to Dochgarroch return - 7 miles flat. In addition here are 2 simple Pilates exercises you can try at home to help your body move more freely. 1. Spine Twist Start by sitting tall, on a chair or the floor. Reach arms out to sides, and allow your shoulders to relax away from your ears. Pull in your belly button. Imagine you are a puppet being lifted up through the crown of your head. Turn to the right, keeping your hips forwards, return to the middle, then turn to the left. Repeat 3 times on each side. 2. Hip Roll Lie down on the floor with knees bent. Place a cushion between your knees. Notice how your back feels on the floor. Breathe in a relaxed way without lifting your shoulders. Tilt your tail bone (at the bottom of your spine), flatten your back onto the floor, and peel your back off the floor into a long line. Imagine you have a ski slope running from your knees to your shoulders. Pull in your belly button, and then gradually return to the floor, allowing each bone in your spine to touch the floor one by one until you are back down to your tail bone once again. Repeat 5 times.

Meatballs
Lady and the Tramp!
When I think of meat balls I somehow always think of “ Lady and the Tramp”. Yes… Lady and the Tramp! Speaking to an Italian friend of mine they tell me that every house in Italy will have its own recipe for meatballs or “Polpette“ as they are known, and they can be served with pasta, bread or risotto. This is my version and it is served with spaghetti just like in the movie! For best results make the meat balls the day before and leave in the fridge overnight. Ingredients - Serves 4 190ml of olive oil 1 finely chopped red onion 1 finely chopped white onion 100g of pine nuts 3 gloves of garlic crushed Fresh basil and rosemary chopped finely 25g of parmesan grated 500g of pork mince Zest of one lemon 50g of bread crumbs 1 egg 2 x 400g tins of chopped tomatoes 100ml of red wine Put about 90ml of the olive oil in a saucepan and add onions, pine nuts and garlic. Gently cook until golden. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. Into a bowl put the herbs, cheese, mince and lemon zest. Add a pinch of salt and pepper and mix together. Once the onions etc are cool, add to the mix along with the bread crumbs and egg, mixing it all together.

To make the meatballs, separate the mix into small balls and roll on the palm of your hand. Put onto a plate, cling film and place in the fridge. To cook… empty the tin of tomatoes into a big sauce pan along with the red wine and gently simmer for 2-3 minutes. Meanwhile in a frying pan put about 90ml of olive oil and heat, place the meat ball in the frying pan and cook until golden, then place on some paper towel to drain any fat and then finally place in the tomato sauce and cook for about 10 minutes. Cook your fresh spaghetti for 3 minutes in salted water, drain and place in a pasta plate or serving bowl. Top with the meat balls and drizzle the sauce. Top with some grated parmesan and serve with a glass of chianti and crusty bread. EXTRACTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 29TH NOVEMBER 2010 OF INVERNESS CITY COMMITTEE - PART TWO
Inverness Partnership - Vibrant City -City Arts - Forward Planning The City Manager introduced the report and summarised the principal benefits for the City that the Arts programme had brought. Ms S Carey, who had been commissioned to review and actively work with Inverness Old Town Arts (IOTA) with the aim of integrating IOTA into a Highland-wide strategy for public art, was preparing this work which had been funded directly by Creative Scotland through the Rural Innovation Fund. Ms Carey summarised the report and highlighted the economic, social and reputational impact the City’s investment in public art, as part of the Streetscaping programme, had made on Inverness. She then outlined proposals for future projects including the use of the waterfront (the river, the Muirtown Basin, the Harbour and the canal) for permanent and temporary public art. In discussion, Members commented that: the IOTA projects could lever in significant additional investment into the City; there was a need to ensure that public art was not done on an ad-hoc basis and some consistency was required; public art could be controversial and challenging but was important in stimulating communities; there was a need for more consistent partnership working in marketing the various arts projects and activities within the City; support for this project was an unnecessary burden on the Common Good Fund when important buildings within the City were falling into disrepair; the Council was looking to outsource its Culture, Learning and Leisure Services and this project would suit the new Company’s remit better than the Common Good Fund; local businesses had not been supportive of some of the public art in the City centre; young people wanted to be in a ‘happening’ place; the landscape of a City was very important to tourism and referral the best form of marketing and therefore public art was essential; it should be noted that the Donations Working Group funding was sourced from the Common Good Fund; there was no point in putting public art in a City that wasn’t maintained to a high enough standard; there should be better linkages to the Events and Festivals Working Group; a large number of organisations and businesses owned public art which should be available to anyone and more investigation should be carried out as to what might be available to the City; and many voluntary organisations and individuals were involved in creating public art and this should be encouraged. Public Art in the ownership of
page 28 - March 2011
private Companies should be made available for public view. In response, Officers commented that public art did stimulate debate but if the City Vision was to be delivered there was a requirement to invest in a high quality infrastructure with public art providing a focus on how people moved through and used the City. A three year funding programme was essential to ensure match funding from other sources. The Committee therefore AGREED to i. provide a maximum of £30,750 from the Inverness Common Good Fund revenue budget for the financial years 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 to fund core support for IOTA; ii. continue to invest in a public art programme for the City on the condition that the programme demonstrated match funding from other sources and subject to governance; iii. recognise the value of public art as an important resource for the City and an important tool to deliver the confident and resilient City imagined in the City Vision; and iv. the City Manager reporting back on progress to the Committee, as appropriate, but in any event, no later that 6 June 2011. Inverness Partnership Marketing Inverness The Corporate Manager, INBS, introduced the report highlighting the fact that at an Inverness Partnership workshop in November 2010 Members had agreed that marketing was one of three key themes the Partnership should focus on. The Tourism Co-ordinator then outlined the current activities being carried out by various partner organisations in isolation and stressed the importance that partnership working was essential to ensure consistency and the maximisation of resources. Members were generally supportive of the initiative and commented that: it was important to market Inverness and Loch Ness together to maximise potential returns for both areas; coordination of marketing activities of the partner organisations was required but current inhouse resources should be examined before creating additional posts; marketing did not appear in any one persons job at the moment; there was a need to realign the focus by linking more with Loch Ness; there was a need for an overall marketing strategy for public buildings in Inverness; Events and Festivals Working Group should play a role in the marketing of the area; with the potential for a major sports event coming to Inverness in the Summer of 2011, it was important to move quickly; and Inverness Leisure should be considered as an important partner in any marketing initiative for
tel: 01309 690063
Inverness.Officers confirmed that all existing in-house resources would be reviewed as part of the Marketing Plan as well as liaison with all relevant Project and Working Groups, including Events and Festivals and IOTA. The governance for any decisions would be the Inverness City Committee. The Committee i. ENDORSED the proposal that the Marketing Project Group seek greater private sector representation; ii. AGREED that the Marketing Project Group produce a Marketing Plan with costed actions; and iii. AGREED that the costed action plan be presented to the next meeting of the City Committee. Fabric Restoration Works to the Steeple on Bridge Street The restoration would include full stone repairs; mortar pointing; improved internal maintenance access; and works to the clock faces and weather vane. The City Manager outlined the report, providing Members with the background as to the reasons why this work was essential. Members commented that: in the interest of public health and safety, there was no alternative but to carry out this work; this was an under loved and unknown piece of Inverness architecture which should be improved; if scaffolding was to used in the renovations, the Council should look at innovative ways of disguising it with, for example, art work; and additional sources of funding should be investigated e.g. Historic Scotland and Inverness City Heritage Trust. In response to Members queries, Officers responded as follows: all avenues of external funding would be investigated but until a project was live it was difficult to get positive responses; all previously removed stonework had been set aside for replacement during the renovation; a feasibility study into future possible uses and access to the Steeple had been budgeted at a maximum cost of £5,000; and improvements to the clock lighting would form part of the restoration project. The Committee APPROVED: i. Common Good Fund expenditure from Revenue Balances for investment in the measures outlined in the foregoing report to carry out fabric repairs all as highlighted above for a total estimated project cost of £950,000; and ii. the carrying out of a feasibility study into alternative or additional uses for the lower areas to encourage limited public access, noting that the cost would be included within the above sum; and AGREED iii. that all reasonable steps would be taken to seek third party funding from other sources.

Last month I was honoured to be the guest speaker at the Highlands and Islands Press Awards in Nairn.
The local press are vital to our communities and it is important that we recognise the important role they play. We are lucky in the Highlands to have such a vibrant, successful, and challenging local media. Their commitment to the wellbeing of the Highlands is something they and I share. Whilst we do not always agree, and I may not always seem grateful for it, it is vital that they keep making the lives of our elected representatives awkward - it is the lifeblood of our democracy. It was a privilege to present the awards to the winners - apart from anything else as the minister for public spending I do not often get to make announcements that people like! “ Parliament Blog ” News that Castle Stuart has been chosen as the venue for the Barclays Scottish Open has cheered us all up, in these times of gloom and austerity. From the 7th 11th July, the “spotlight” will be on the Moray Firth, Inverness. The benefits to the area will be considerable. The gold course General Manager, Stuart McColm, has said that we need to attract 20,000 visitors a day to be sure of keeping the event, as the Loch Lomond Club, which has hosted the event since 1996 attracted between 70-85,000 - so put it in your diary!
This will be a major attraction to bring visitors north - and a boost for hotels, B&B’s and guest houses. Perhaps in Scotland, we tend to undersell our own manifold tourist attractions - so the potential to use the tourism trade to bolster our jobs, livelihoods and futures may not be realised. We can be backward at coming forward, and may not see Scotland as others see us. This was brought home to me when a B&B owner from Newtonmore told me that she had holidayed in the Nile in January, and asked me how many visitors I thought there were in ships on the Nile,
on any one day. She told me the answer: one million! With our scenery, whisky, tartan, Gaelic, history, culture, heritage, beaches, mountains, lochs as well as golf, fishing, sailing and countless other reasons to come to Scotland, we could, should and will see more people from countries throughout the world coming for a stay here.
Lying between the current time, and my visits to the Scottish Open in July, is the little matter of the Scottish elections! This column is pretty much non-political so I will not make a pitch here! But politics and elections do have their lighter side. I do remember, for example, one of the first letters I received as MSP, on the day after I was elected, three elections and twelve years ago. “Dear Ewing” it began rather unpromisingly. “I woke up this morning to learn that you are my MSP. This makes this day the unhappiest of my life.” It went on in this rather gloomy vein, but then ended with a twist in the tale. “PS Can you send a signed photograph.” This was not, I am relieved to say, a typical communication. And I am not sure what happened to this voter after I complied with the request. But if he is reading this, and does come along to view the Scottish Open, I am happy to make his acquaintance!

It seems as if all we ever read in our newspapers and hear on the TV news programmes is bad news. Along with the poor weather and cold dark nights, it can all contribute to our feeling down and depressed about life and the future. It’s so easy to allow the world and our circumstances to rob us of joy. Paul wrote to the people in the church at Galatia and asked them in Gal.4:15 “What has happened to all your joy? Someone once described Christians who had lost their joy as “creaking in body and soul as they limp along the highway the glory! No matter the difficulties we’re presently experiencing or the challenges we face, God wants us to experience joy in the depths of our beings. Joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness depends on what happens, but joy is much deeper and can still be our experience, even in the hardest of circumstances. Joy is the supernatural gift God gives through the Holy Spirit who lives within every Christian. being “full of joy through the Holy Spirit and Jesus said in John.15:11 that when we live our lives in His love “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. So if you’re struggling with problems and difficulties that threaten to overwhelm you and you feel as if “joy has disappeared from your life, let me encourage you to take a fresh look at God and rediscover joy in God’s worth - who He is. Just reflecting on the nature and character of our God lifts us up from our darkness and brings us into the light and joy of His presence. David said in Psalm 32:11 “Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous. We should also rediscover joy in God’s word - what He has said. Start to read the Bible and let God speak into your heart and your life situation through His word. God’s word restores our joy. Jeremiah said in Jeremiah15:16 “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight. And we

need to rediscover joy in God’s works - what He has done. And God has done amazing things for every one of us. He sent Jesus, His one and only Son, to open up the way to salvation and eternal life. The Apostle Peter reflects on the amazing things God has done in 1 Peter1:3-9. He “has given us the privilege of being born againâ€? (v3). We can all have a fresh new start with God. He has “reserved a priceless inheritance for his childrenâ€? (v4). We have all the glories and perfections of heaven to look forward to. God “will protect you until you receive this salvation ‌ So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy aheadâ€? (v5-6). So don’t lose heart if the circumstances of your life are dark and difficult at this time. God is still there, even in the darkness. He still loves and cares for you, no matter what you’ve done or haven’t done. If you reach out to Him, He can fill you with “a glorious, inexpressible joyâ€?. Vikings and Norse in the Moray Firth Where was the frontier? Viking pirates attacked areas of Scotland, as elsewhere in Western Europe, in the late 700Ęźs and continued sporadically for several hundred years. They favoured wealthy coastal settlements where their highly mobile fleets could accomplish swift grab and run raids. We know about the raids of monasteries, because monks elsewhere reported on these frightening marauders, but suspect that wealthy secular sites were also targeted. Not only precious objects were taken, but also people to be sold into slavery. In the wake of these raids Scandinavians came and settled, in particular on the Northern and Western Isles, but also to Caithness and Sutherland. These areas were controlled by powerful chieftains, known as jarls or earls. Gradually over time the King of Norway obtained nominal overlordship over these Scottish Scandinavian settlers. Officially the Western Isles were part of Norway until 1266, and the Northern Isles until 1472, resulting in centuries of Scandinavian influence in these areas. Ideally the term Vikings is used to refer to the raiders, and Norse to the settlers.
The initial Scandinavian settlers were pagan and were buried with gravegoods in marked contrast to the native Christian Picts. Viking graves are known from Caithness, and there appear to be isolated remains of female and male graves from near Dunrobin Castle and Ospisdale near Dornoch. South of the Dornoch Firth there is very little archaeological evidence, and unfortunately none at all from Dingwall. A Viking silver hoard was deposited at Tarbat church, Portmahomack around 1000. Recently a small silver ingot fragment, similar to ones found in Viking silver hoards, was found by a metal detectorist near Dores. If it dates to the Norse period, it would provide hints of Norse use of the Great Glen. However, unfortunately silver ingots were used throughout history and into modern times, and because it was not excavated by archaeologists we are unable to determine the context or date. Another metal detector find, but of a more distinctive object allowing better dating, was found only last year at Ardersier. It is part of an openwork brooch or mount with page 32 - March 2011

an interlaced animal. Brooches of this style were worn in Scandinavia and often date around c. 1150. This exciting find provides evidence of late encounters on the south side of the Moray Firth – but whether as a traded item or part of a short-lived settlement cannot be determined.
From these fragments of evidence, it is clear we cannot say anything with certainty about the southern frontier of the Vikings and Norse in the Moray Firth area south of the Dornoch Firth. I suspect that it was not static, and would have been a contested frontier area with its fertile agricultural land. It probably changed hands between Norse opportunists and the local powers, the original Pictish rulers (and possibly kings of Fortriu, if indeed this key late Pictish stronghold was situated on the Moray Firth as Alex Woolf has argued), and later the earls of Moray (who during the reign of MacBeth in the early 11th century controlled a vast area), depending on who was stronger at the time. Sometime in this period Dingwall presumably was the centre of Norse control, perhaps as Barbara Crawford has argued, as part of a strategy of the Earls of Orkney to gain timber from the Conon and Beauly rivers to bring back to Orkney.
Tantalising questions remain. What was the relationship between Norse and native in this area? Where were the Pictish and later native settlements especially to the north of Inverness? And of course, how much and in what way did this Norse settlement influence the local area? We can only hope that future archaeological discoveries will shed light on these issues.
Dr. Susan Kruse is a Viking archaeologist with interests in Viking silver hoards, economic systems, and the issues of frontiers. Currently she is a project officer with ARCH, Archaeology for Communities in the Highlands, providing a range of courses and events for people to learn about and preserve their local heritage. She is an Honorary Research Fellow with the University of the Highlands and Islands and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
