The Editor April marks a real change in the seasons for me and to celebrate this here are a few pithy quotes about this month: “The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year. — Mark Twain “There are no days in the whole round year more delicious than those which often come to us in the latter half of April... The sun trembles in his own soft rays... The grass in the meadow seems all to have grown green since yesterday... though there is warmth enough for a sense of luxury, there is coolness enough for exertion. — Thomas Wentworth Higginson

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS DRAWING A LINE One famous recorded use of this phrase, "to draw a line" took place in the USA, as part of the famous Battle of the Alamo. If you are like me, whilst you may heard of the battle and it's heroes like Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett, you may not know much more. The Battle of the Alamo took place in March 1836, as part of the Texas Revolution. After a decade of political and cultural clashes between the Mexican government and the increasingly large population of English-speaking American settlers in Texas, hostilities erupted with armed clashes between Texans and Mexican soldiers. There came a point when the Alamo was completely surrounded by Mexican forces. The Mexican General sent a messenger to the Texan Commander, William Travis, demanding surrender, or else everyone in the compound would be killed. According to the legend, Travis called the Alamo defenders together, explained that defeat was almost certain, and read the letter of surrender; Travis then (having chosen to die

instead of surrender) reportedly pulled out his battle sword, used it to draw a line in the ground of the Alamo, and asked for volunteers to cross over the line and join him, understanding their decision would be irreversible. But what's this American history lesson about? It's about drawing a line. Christians are under so much pressure. In many parts of the world, they suffer real persecution and discrimination. Even here in the UK, Christians have been harassed for simply speaking about what is precious and important for doing what comes naturally to people of faith. We live in a country founded on Christian values (more so than 'British values'), and yet under recent years those values have been challenged and eroded. Of course, it's also true to say that on some issues, Christians of different traditions are divided in their opinion. So where do we draw a line? Does this loving God of ours have flexible standards? Do things change over time? Whilst there are some cultural issues like ladies wearing hats in church that may change, there is a line over which

we may not cross. Whilst God loves the sinner, he hates the sin - that is why Jesus had to suffer death. As the old hymn puts it: "There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin. He only could unlock the gate of heaven and let us in." This is one aspect of the drawn line we need God's forgiveness. The Bible says, "If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right. He will cleanse us from all the wrongs we have done. If we say we have not sinned, we make God a liar, and we do not accept God's teaching." (1 John 1: 8-10) When Jesus forgave, he also said, "Go and sin no more..." We cannot 'sit on the fence' and try to have the best of both worlds. With God, it's all or nothing. But Jesus promised, "I came to give life - life in all its fullness." Which side of the line are you? Rev Alan Price St Mary-in-the-Fields, Culloden

GreenThumb

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Is your Lawn Now Ready for the Season ? By “Ready” I mean aerated, and raked or scarified. If so, well done. The ground conditions have been awful this year, right through the mid-winter months. The succession of storms, and heavy rain has meant lots of waterlogging. These conditions are not good for GreenThumb, or indeed anyone trying to get any work done. Very few plants thrive on standing for weeks on end with their feet in cold water ! We have made very slow progress for months now, and have a substantial backlog of preparatory work to catch-up. Easter weekend is early this year too. As a general rule, you should have the grass scarified and the winter moss dealt with before you start mowing or feeding. Once you get new young grass shoots up and running, a scarifier will no doubt do them some damage. We will probably have to postpone our spring feeding until all our aerating and scarification is done. This has been becoming more of a “norm” in the last 10 years as it seems to us on the ground every day, that autumn conditions are lasting late (up to Christmas), and winter is then running late and producing a late spring. Last year there was almost no spring at all ! Wet ground conditions going into this season means even worse moss than usual this spring. There’s not much time left therefore for raking and scarifying before the grass wants to get going. It also probably means we will all need to aerate the ground, to help with waterlogging, and the inevitable compaction of heavy ground. Spring – bring it on !

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES Here is an interesting question; would you like to make a financial donation to a giant energy company of your choice? Would you like to take £300 for instance, out of your own pocket, and donate it to the company that supplies your household or business energy? I think your natural answer to both of these questions will be ‘no’ – but that’s what 70% of people in the Highlands and Islands are effectively already doing. My team and I took on the challenge to switch electricity providers only to find that between 5 of us the saving for switching was over £1000. In this era of austerity, there is the opportunity to reduce costs instead of income so why don’t you give it a try? You can visit this website for impartial advice: www.uswitch.com/gas-electricity/ or call them on 0808 2567151. You will save money and it could literally be hundreds of pounds.

School Studies : It is approaching exam time again for our young folk in high schools across Moray. Several students have been in touch with me asking my views on a range of subjects that they are investigating - normally for Modern Studies assignments - covering subjects as diverse as the Westminster voting system and whether I support or oppose the death penalty. It is great to see the enthusiasm and I wish all of our students all the best in their upcoming exams. Something, I confess, I do not envy any one of them! Election Time : It wouldn’t be appropriate to use this column for political campaigning (and no-one would be surprised at who I’m campaigning for anyway!), however I would simply urge folk to use their vote in next month’s Scottish Parliament elections. Democracy has been paid for very dearly by those before us and I strongly believe we should all exercise our right to vote, whoever it may be for.
