Words by the Wayside “The Lord God of Israel was their inheritance”

My sleeping children are still flying dreams in their goose-down heads. The lush of the river singing morning songs Fish watch their ceilings turn sun-white. The grey-green pike lances upstream Kale, like mermaid's hair points the water's drift. All is morning hush and bird beautiful. I only, I didn't have flu. Spike Milligan

Christian, worship and sin are incompatible. If we are taken up with our Saviour and His things, we will not be taken up with self, sin or the things of the world. Our passion for the Saviour will determine our lifestyles. What sort of lives are we living? What sort of ambassadorship are we fulfilling? Our Lord Jesus Christ must come first in our lives and ourselves second. God alone is our inheritance and the Lord’s portion is His people.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Recently, I have been reflecting on the paintings of “the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood”. The “Brotherhood” was a group of English painters, poets, and critics, founded in 1848. Their paintings are special as many of them convey the message of the Gospel, God’s Good News of forgiveness for humankind because of the death of His Son. One artist, Holman Hunt, is particularly well known. One of his paintings, “The Light of the World”, has its title carved into the top of its frame. The picture shows the figure of a man standing holding a lit lantern in one hand against the background of what appears to be a dark forest. By the light of the moon, we see that the man is wearing a crown of thorns; the light of the lantern shows, the whiteness, the purity of his robes. He is knocking at a door. It is a picture of the crucified but risen Christ knocking at the door of somebody’s heart, as Hunt himself wrote, “an obstinate mind”. The Bible verse carved into the bottom of the frame proves this interpretation correct: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him,

and will sup with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20). The painting shows the door overgrown with large, tall weeds. Clearly, it has not been opened for some time. Further, there is no handle to be seen on the outside of the door; it must be opened from within. God will not force His way into your life – you have a responsibility to open your heart’s door and let Him in. What the painting does not show us is what is behind the door, but the Bible says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9). Behind the door must be the blackness of sin. Holman Hunt painted three versions of “The Light of the World”. When the frame was taken off one of these, in the top left-hand corner Hunt had himself written in Latin “Do not pass me by, Lord” and signed his name in the opposite corner. Surely that should be our prayer too? Dear Reader, the crucified risen Christ, stands at the door of your heart wanting to come in to forgive and cleanse you from sin. In the Bible, 2 Corinthians 4:6 says, “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of

Parliament Blog & Tide Times The Raigmore Parking Campaign has been overwhelmed by the positive responses and the continued support we have received since the campaign launched in May 2018. Those who have engaged with the campaign so far have shown that there are many viable solutions to the hospital’s parking woes. However, more information will be needed before NHS Highland can choose the way forward. NHS Highland’s traffic report provides an insight into how staff use the car park and to get a fuller picture we need more information on how patients and hospital visitors use the car park. That is why the Raigmore Parking Campaign is calling on NHS Highland to launch another traffic survey for patients and hospital visitors so we can find a solution that works for all.

Edward Mountain MSP

There is no doubt our future would be better in the EU staying in the single market enjoying the freedom of movement that is so important for the Highlands. After all, look at how many young people from countries like Poland, Estonia and Latvia work in our hospitality industry. Then consider that Europe has been a good financial friend to the Highlands through investment in roads, bridges, piers, harbours, broadband, students, farmers, crofters and community facilities. But if Brexit is going ahead we can’t wait any longer for Westminster to come up with a sensible plan for rural funding. We need a transition period of five years to provide certainty and stability. My plan proposes to keep in the first two years, broadly the same income support payments to farmers, crofters and land managers as under CAP. Everyone, even the European Commissioner for Agriculture agrees that the Common Agriculture Policy is far too complicated. I want to start making the system simpler. We will remove financial penalties for minor errors in claims. But change needs to be well thought out and planned. Two years on from the EU vote, we still know very little from the UK Government about what will follow Brexit. Will people still as we wish be welcome to come to work here? Will there be tariffs? Will exporters be punished? What about flood of cheap imports? How will the provenance of Scottish produce be protected? Until we have all the answers it is impossible to finalise longer term strategy.

I regularly see first hand the great work our community & third sector groups do across the Highlands. One challenge they often come up against is the matter of funding, and it is something they often raise when I meet them. It is vital these organisations secure the funding they need and it is often difficult to keep up to date with all the different funds that could help. I am delighted to be able to host my second funding fayre that will bring together some of the many organisations offering funding prospects with community & third sector groups in the constituency. I look forward to welcoming organisations like the Big Lottery Fund, Age Scotland, Creative Scotland and many others to Inverness Town House on 7th of September from 12pm. If you are from a community or third sector group, I would encourage you to come along and find out what funding opportunities may be available to you. Further information about this event and my regular constituency surgeries can be found on my website: www.drewhendrymp.scot

How to Get Rid of Course Grasses in the Lawn - Need a Lawn Makeover ? I am prompted to mention this now as this spring saw an emergence of course grasses in many lawns, more so than usual. What are course grasses ? They are “wild” grasses, as opposed to “lawn” grasses, typically pale in colour, a thicker, course looking leaf, and often seem to grow in clumps in the lawn. They are seeded by other course grasses already in the lawn, or can be blown in from neighbouring land, or even deposited in bird droppings. They were prevalent this spring as lawn grasses were slow to start growing because May and June saw drought conditions. Course grasses tend to tolerate and keep growing in these conditions, whereas lawn grasses don’t, so the wild stuff seems to dominate. You can help prevent them spreading by mowing regularly. Also, if you give the lawn a quick swish with a spring rake prior to mowing, you will lift the long stems, which can then be mown off before they produce seed.

They are not weeds, so a lawn weedkiller wont clear them. If there are just a few clumps, you can dig out a square of turf (like a carpet tile) and put it in the bin. You can replace with a patch of turf, or seed with lawn grass. If there is a major infestation, that’s not realistic, and you might just have to get used to it, unless you are prepared to replace the lawn with a new one. We do a Lawn Makeover which is much cheaper than re-turfing see www.greenthumb.co.uk. It involves completely killing the existing lawn with a total herbicide, then re-seeding and top-dressing with a clean mix of new lawn grasses. Get in touch if you would like a free estimate.

There is a good factsheet provided by the Royal Horticultural Society. If you search for www.rhs/coursegrasses, it should take you straight there.

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Can I be sure of being in Heaven? The Bible has the answer Highland Carers Advocacy (HCA) provides free, independent advocacy in support of unpaid carers who care for someone who has an illness, disability, or condition which requires them to need support.

We can: s Ensure that carers’ needs and views are heard.

Jesus said 'Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.' (Matthew 24.35, the Bible)
