PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS “No man is an island.” On Friday 24th June 2016 we all woke up to the reality of Brexit: 52% voted to leave, 48% to remain. Some feel euphoric and energised, others feel deflated and anxious. While most are respecting the result some are not respecting one another and there is a real risk of bitter division. The overall vote was close but there is now a gulf between Scotland and England, between the haves and the have nots, and between the young and the old. Who can unite these sharply divided groups that don’t understand each other’s needs? The Prime Minister has resigned, the Labour Party has imploded, Gove and Johnson have dramatically split amidst accusations of betrayal. A referendum which started off as an attempt to paper over divisions in the Conservative party has now divided the whole country leaving us isolated from our European neighbours. Everyone is agreed that we are in ‘unchartered waters.’ It is a time to seek to listen and understand people’s fears and frustrations, to heal the division and to restore the trust. All in positions of authority need our support and prayers at this

time. But where can we turn for wisdom, comfort and direction? As News 24 recycled ignorance and infighting while reporting the reality of an island isolated from Europe I wondered where to turn for wisdom? Then I remembered these words:‘No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is less…’ John Donne 1624 This is not a political statement about the reality of Brexit, it’s a statement about the reality of our connectedness to each other. It was written 392 years ago by a man suffering from a fatal fever. Coming to terms with his mortality he realised how much his experience connected him with others and how much he needed others. In medical isolation he heard the church bell calling people to prayer and he asked: ‘for whom the bell tolls?’ The sound of the bell reminded him that he shared with all humanity a need for relationship with God. To overcome division and reconnect with one another we need to discover the qualities of grace and forgiveness in our lives. Grace is receiving something we don’t deserve. Grace is receiving something that cannot be earned. Offering grace is about taking the initiative to be generous towards people who can never pay us back. Grace is not whitewashing disagreement but choosing to speak well of people who think differently from us. Grace is not discovered in prideful selfsufficiency but in humble recognition of our need to be changed. It is received when God touches our lives and it is shared when we choose to reach out to other people. If you are feeling isolated, cut off, misunderstood, overlooked I invite you first to be reconciled to God. Know that God loves you. He took the initiative in sending Jesus to die on a cross so that you could be reconnected to Him. Our sins divide us from God and divide us from each other but bridges can be rebuilt and walls torn down if we allow God to forgive and transform us by His grace. We can be friends with God if we believe in Jesus death for us and receive His gift of forgiveness. When we trust in what He has done He transforms us into people of generosity and grace. After reconciling us to Himself, He sends us out to become His ambassadors of reconciliation. “God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed us to become ambassadors of reconciliation”. 2 Corinthians 5:19 We live on an island but we should remember that no man is an island. God wants us to seek him, reach out for him and find him: he is not far from us. And he wants us to reach out to our neighbour who shares with us a need for the love and grace of God. Pastor Alasdair Macleod Culduthel Christian Centre
I was recently on the receiving end of a decision that I didn't agree with (I think you know the one I mean). Life can be full of disappointment when things don’t seem to go our way and how we respond to that says much more about us than which side of the argument we are on. The challenge I set myself is to keep the argument in perspective and try remember that our relations with actual people is the important thing. CS Lewis said the following: “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit...”
