The Editor “Did you enjoy your week of summer?” I heard someone say recently! Living on the Moray coast I have grown to expect the unpredictability of our weather - reason to moan, maybe? But look beyond the rain and view our beautiful Scottish outdoors. We may not have Sorento sunshine, but we’ve got scenery that is the envy of the world. So get out there and enjoy our spectacular Moray Coast - just don’t forget your brolly!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS ‘There’s nothing more important than family’ Do you say that to people? Do you buy into the idea that in the ups and downs of life, through the laughter and tears and arguments and celebrations and disappointments; there’s something about your family that just matters more than anything else in this world? Our church has been thinking about family recently. We’ve got mixed experiences of family life. Amongst us, we have plenty of experience of marriage, singleness, divorce, bereavement, having children and not having children. We’ve talked about the differences in our wider family lives - from those of us who have enjoyed really supportive families to those who have struggled with their experience of family life. The thing that we have in common as we gather as a church, is that we are all part of one family - and many of us want to say, it’s a better, fuller and truer experience of family than we’ve known before. When Jesus arrived in this world, He said and did some very radical things that
today might go straight over our heads, but in His day utterly shocked and challenged expectations about God and society. One of the things He did that caused people’s jaws to drop (and made some of them plot to kill Him off and shut Him up) was to invite us to know God as our Father. Did you ever learn the ‘Lord’s Prayer’? The one that starts, ‘Our Father…’? Well, whether you did or you didn’t (and you can find it all in Matthew 6:9-13), you don’t have to go any further than those first two words to learn something that might change your life. God - the God who is awesome enough to make a universe with just a word from His lips; the God who holds together that universe within the incredibly small margins for error in gravitational pull and in the Earth’s distance from the Sun - this same incredible, powerful God who makes us look like less than ants, wants to invite us to relate to Him as His children. You see, the Bible is not about how to get your slate wiped clean in front of a God who hasn’t the least interest in you as a person. From the beginning of the Bible, and especially with Jesus coming to this world, God has been putting together a

family. A family adopted to belong to Him as children to a Father. A family to belong to each other, too. Brothers and sisters who want to share with each other the love that their Father has shown them. Ephesians 1 talks about how God does all of this adopting, family-forming work through Jesus Christ. Belonging to church isn’t about being good, keeping rules, liking tradition or being the same as Christians that you know. None of these things, after all, are conditions for you belonging to your biological family - are they? We’re joining a family that God’s putting together, which is based on His unconditional love for us, and His doing everything for us through Jesus. That’s the kind of Dad He is, the Dad we meet with week by week, day by day. And let me tell you - there’s nothing more important than that family.

Red Thread Alert ! I’ve just put out an e-Alert to all our customers, as we have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed, clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.
If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year.
12
UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season. Don’t forget though, if we have dry spells during the summer, you need to water the grass just like any other plant. An hour with a sprinkler in the evening is best to ensure you don’t lose much of the benefit from evaporation during the day. Often people think you don’t need to water the garden in Scotland, but you do, especially around the drier parts of our area along the Moray Coast. For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES Marine tourism has been growing in Scotland. Marinas have sprung up around the coast with busy berths at Inverness and Nairn. Sailing has become more popular as has cruise liners with nearly half a million passengers enjoying voyages round Scotlands coast stopping off at places such as Kirkwall, Invergordon and Stornoway. The Caledonian Canal is a world class attraction and being developed further by Scottish Canals and successful businesses. It was fitting that in Holyrood before the summer recess, we debated the new Marine Tourism strategy. This seeks to make the most of our sparkling seas beautiful coastline and attract to Scotland more visitors in various niche markets. Whether it is sailing, yachting, swimming, diving, canoeing, kayaking or just sitting in a cosy corner watching the sea perhaps with a wee glass of vino - the sea has a certain pull for us all and so it is right that we make the most of it for our tourism sector.
Firstly I would like to take this opportunity, in my first blog post, to thank the people of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey for their overwhelming support during the election. Although I received over 50% of the vote, I am determined to work for everyone in the constituency. I’m already working to deliver on my election commitments and supporting people who need my help in this constituency. Some of the early work has involved getting a fairer deal on mobile coverage and progressing further investment in this area. Getting a team together and an office set up has been a real priority since my election. During my campaign I talked about being an accessible MP and I absolutely want to deliver on that promise. I am already holding surgeries across the constituency and look forward to meeting many more constituents over the summer break.

INNES HOUSE
Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.
Offer extended! Any couple booking their wedding within six months of their wedding date, will be offered complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a 'Champagne Toast' upgrade of their chosen drinks package
