Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings “We wish to see Jesus.” These were the words of some Greeks in St John’s Gospel (12:21) who happened to be in Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover at the same time as Jesus and his disciples, only a few days before his arrest and crucifixion. They had approached Philip, Philip told Andrew, and they both went to Jesus with the request. At this time of year, we think more about Jesus’ birth rather than his death. But even then there were those who wanted to see Jesus. Luke, in his Gospel tells about the angels appearing to shepherds and the shepherds in their excitement saying, ”Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened” (Luke 2:15) and then Luke tells us, ‘when they saw it, they made it known, and all who heard it wondered at it’ (Luke 2:17,18). Matthew tells us about the coming of the Wise Men from the East. They first went to Jerusalem to the royal palace of Herod, thinking that that was the obvious place to look for a king whose birth they had seen in the stars –“We have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2) It was a dangerous mistake to have made and Herod would do his utmost to kill this child. But the Wise Men went on to Bethlehem, and ‘going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him.” (Matthew 2:11) Perhaps because I’m a clergyman, I receive quite a high percentage of Christmas Cards

with ‘holy’ pictures; usually pictures of the stable scene at Bethlehem, painted by one of the Renaissance Italian Masters. While they show Mary and Joseph with the baby Jesus in the manger, and maybe a donkey and an ox; and there may be shepherds with a lamb or two, or the wise men with their presents of gold, frankincense and myrrh, the background is more 16th century Italy than 1st century Bethlehem. But they become familiar, and if we imagine the scene at all, that is what usually comes into our mind. That is what we see. In some cultures, medieval European art does not fit the way people imagine the scene, and if you want to see how the picture translates into other cultures (but still recognisable to us) then visit the following website https://seattleartistleague.com/2016/12/28/n ativity-paintings-around-world/ A few weeks ago I was given a present of a carved wooden Madonna and Child from Malawi. The figures have obvious African features, but obviously represent Mary and Jesus: and the woodcarver has been able to depict such a wonderful expression of love as Mary looks at Jesus and Jesus at Mary. In that piece of wood I can see how the love of God is reflected in the gift of the child of Bethlehem. In the new Testament, the Greek word ‘orao : to see’ can be used for different kinds of sight. To see with one’s eyes the things around, to understand with the mind, to

grasp some inner meaning. Later in Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus, when Mary and Joseph take the child to the temple, the old man Simeon recalls the promise that ‘he would not see death until he had seen the Lord’s Christ.’ (Luke 2:26). He saw something more than just another baby. John in his Gospel, does not give an account of the birth. But he does give an account of the Word of God coming into the world (chapter 1). And he declares, “And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a Father's only Son, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) What will you be looking for this Christmas? What do you hope to see? Where will you see the love and glory of God. Where might you see Jesus? Don’t let that moment of grace and truth pass you by.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times

With the darkening nights, the pace of rural life seems to slow somewhat. The flood of tourists becomes a trickle – providing welcome respite though we should always be thankful that they come to visit, supporting our local economy and businesses. But it would be wrong to think that we all go into hibernation mode! Communities, families, schools and businesses gear up for the festive period, with parties, events, nativities, Christmas fayres and gatherings all to take place. It is in this winter season that the self-reliance and resilience of our communities comes to the fore. There is a willingness to reach out, to include and support each other across the generations that is, I think, quintessentially rural and Scottish. And I look forward to playing my part, small though that is, in it all.

Fergus Ewing MSP

I recently raised an early day motion in parliament commending the Scottish Provincial Press for its Highland Heroes Award scheme which aims to recognise those in the Highlands who are making a real difference to communities, healthcare, education, safety and wellbeing. Initiatives such as these are a fantastic way to recognise the great many dedicated and hard-working individuals in our communities and I would encourage all to read about the truly inspirational folk in our communities who have been nominated and to take part in the vote. All of those who have been shortlisted for the award should be very proud of themselves and I wish them all the best of luck at the awards night in Inverness in November.

Ask the vet...

(Acts 8:21)

Reader, in the sight of others your life might seem good and upright, but how do you stand before God? It is impossible to flee from Him who is everywhere, or from the all-searching of His eyes. Reader, all have sinned, and all need The Saviour, The Lord Jesus Christ, neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Are you saved?

Culloden vets are also pleased to announce the start of our monthly advice column. This month’s star letter concerns a Labrador named “Jamie”.

Q

I have a six year old male Labrador who typically eats anything in sight! We have family and friends visiting over Christmas. Can you clarify the main poisons we should be worried about over the festive season? There is lots of information online about this subject and some of it is incorrect. It’s a large subject but we will point out five of the main poisons: -

A

Chocolate – Poisonous to dogs. The darker, more bitter and stronger the product the more poisonous, with white chocolate being the least harmful. Theobromine is similar to caffeine and is the poisonous ingredient. Symptoms can include tummy upsets, increased breathing and heart rate, appearing wobbly when standing, walking or twitching muscles. This is not exhaustive and other symptoms may be present. The amount and strength of chocolate eaten (wrappers would be useful), time since eaten and size of pet are all important factors. Raisins, grapes, currants and sultanas – Christmas cakes and mince pies for example. These are all poisonous to dogs and can lead to kidney failure. Even small amounts can be very dangerous. Increased levels of fatty foods can also cause pancreatitis. Onions, garlic, leeks, shallots and chives - As in sage and onion stuffing and onion gravy. They can all cause tummy upsets and even destruction of red blood cells causing life threatening anemia.

Email us

with your pet care queries and the most interesting or topical will be published.

Antifreeze – This is very poisonous to dogs and cats and causes kidney failure. Bones – Chicken and turkey bones should not be fed to animals. They can splinter and pierce the gut with potentially fatal consequences.

SpotLIGHT Feature

INTRODUCING THE ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP TO THE HEART OF

SCOTLAND Everything for which Scotland is famous in 250 miles to the heart of Scotland – that’s what visitors can expect from the country’s newest driving route revealed. Launched at the Moray Speyside Tourism Conference in Elgin, the circular route will take visitors on a journey through Speyside, the Cairngorms, Royal Deeside, Aberdeen, the East Coast and the Moray Coast giving visitors the opportunity to drive fantastic roads with lovely views while also being able to explore castles, wildlife, coastal villages, stunning beaches, golf courses, mountains, forests and distilleries. It is hoped that the new route will bring additional trade to communities situated along the North East 250, with visitors to the North East wishing to explore Scotland in a different way and to make the most of the various possible itineraries. The North East 250 has been developed by local businessman, Guy Macpherson-Grant, whose family’s roots on Speyside go back to the 16th century. Passionate about the North East of Scotland, Guy is confident that the North East 250 will encourage people to come to the region, to enjoy driving its roads and to enjoy everything it has to offer besides: spectacular scenery, bounteous wildlife, globally renowned food and drink, traditional warm hospitality and activities galore.

First drivers, The Cannonbawz Run, hit the road from Ballindalloch Castle on Scotland’s newest driving route, the North East 250.

Guy Macpherson-Grant explained his vision:

I am delighted to reveal the North East 250 today amongst fellow tourism businesses in Moray Speyside. I am excited by the potential of the North East 250 to bring more visitors to our area and experience, what I believe, is the very best that Scotland has to offer. We need businesses along the Route to really get behind it and help make it the success I know it can be.

The North East 250 has already attracted significant support amongst businesses along the route. Partners and Supporters include Chivas Brothers, Ballindalloch Castle and Gardens, Turcan Connell, Walkers, Aberdeen International Airport, Speyside Gardens and the Station Hotel, Rothes. The North East 250 team has carefully curated initial lists of places to visit, as well as provided information on some accommodation providers and local amenities. Information on these can be found on www.northeast250.com under each of the route’s sectors: Speyside, the Cairngorms, Royal Deeside, Aberdeen, the East Coast and the Moray Coast. These attractions and places to visit will be added to all the time as businesses sign up, and feedback from people who have completed the route is encouraged to ensure that the best experience is created for future visitors. Those visitors or locals doing the route can also become a Member for access to extras, including: a downloadable itinerary of choice, a printed map of the route, a North East 250 Member car sticker and a souvenir North East 250 Passport - to be stamped as you travel along the route.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

What can we possibly be usefully doing in December? With nothing much growing, and the ground sometimes pretty solid, often frosty. It’s when we take our heavy American golf course aerators out and about to aerate lawns. We do hollow-core tining, where the machine removes thousands of plugs from the ground. Golf courses are doing this too at this time not surprisingly. Aerating the ground is multi-beneficial as it allows air into the ground, helps with drainage, and thins-out the root zone which becomes compacted and choked over time. This is mainly about moss control in this part of the world ! You can do this with a garden fork too, but not as effectively obviously as with a machine which actually removes a core of material. I’ve included a picture of our aerator, a formidable piece of kit, and not available in B&Q or at your local garden centre!

Just a reminder; the leaves are all off now, and if they are still in drifts on your grass, it’s a very good idea to lift them. Several weeks without light and air under a pile of leaves is likely to kill/seriously damage a patch of grass. Alastair Watt

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS ‘THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER’. Well it has been a stormy and beautiful autumn hasn’t it?! I love the autumn colours and have spent several happy days out with my dog, Solly, enjoying the local hills and forests. I’m also working on three very different and very exciting garden designs at the moment. Now is a great time of year for getting the garden sorted ahead of spring, and is the perfect time for getting trees and shrubs planted. My own garden continues to progress, and I’ve been distracted somewhat by putting together some elaborate bird feeders that now hang outside my kitchen window, giving me a great view of any peckish, feathered friends that drop by. There are a number of jobs to be getting on with in the garden in December. Here are a few DO’s and DON’Ts:

DO use your lawnmower to collect and chop up leaves. Then you can make a leaf-mould pile, or you can put some on your compost. DO plant trees! Now is the best and most effective time to plant trees because you can plant them ‘bare root’ while they are dormant. If you have to prune Birches or Acers, now is the time to do it, before the sap starts rising. Birches in particular do not look good after pruning, and take a couple of years to recover a natural looking form.

28

DO clean your garden tools, sharpen blades, and take the opportunity to clean and tidy your shed and greenhouse. DO get your garden machinery serviced, this will help ensure it lasts a long time. DON’T forget to keep your bird feeders full, and if you can, make sure there is some water available in a bird bath or shallow pond. DON’T leave your lawnmower sitting all winter with fuel in it. DON’T fertilise your plants or grass. Most plants are having a rest at this time of year – leave them to it! DON’T forget to ensure loose fence panels, gates and empty plant pots are all repaired or secure. In fact look out for anything that might get blown away by winter storms! DON’T forget about your garden until the spring. If you’ve projects that need doing, now is the time to get professionals in to help out before their spring-time diaries fill up!
