The Editor The truth is often hard to come by. In modern times we celebrate Valentine’s Day as a day when we express intimate love for our partners but it seems that the root of the day may be somewhat less romantic. I understand that the day may originally have been designated to mark the execution of Saint Valentine by Emperor Claudius II for promoting the Christian message in response to Roman Paganism - well, well - who would have believed that!

One of the long-standing traditions of the Church and, especially, those in the monastic orders, is the reciting of The Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) at Evening Prayers. What Mary sings about is a world turned upside down. The song uses an amazing number of past-tense verbs: He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. For Mary all of these promises have been fulfilled. Ask yourself does the world work in the way that Mary sings about? Yes 2,000 years later, there are fewer kings in the world, but the seats of power still belong to the mighty. The lowly rarely, if ever, get lifted up. The hungry often continue to go hungry, while those who have seem to get more. Yet, Mary speaks of lifting up the lowly and filling the hungry with good things in the past tense. Mary knows that the birth of the Messiah to her, a lowly Jewish peasant, is an important sign of what God’s kingdom looks like. God became flesh, not in the person of Julius Caesar or a great Egyptian Pharaoh or a mighty warrior king. God became flesh in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, the son of peasant woman in an occupied land. Jesus, as he begins his ministry, affirms the very things his mother sang about. Jesus reminded his disciples that the last would be first. Jesus preached that those who
Pastoral letter and Church Meetings exalt themselves will be humbled. Jesus said blessed are the poor, the hungry, and those who weep, for God will give them the kingdom, fill them with food, and exchange their tears for laughter. Jesus told his followers that he came to serve, and those who follow him must also be servants. Jesus’ whole ministry lived out the words his mother sang. Yes our world is still a fallen and flawed world. The powerful still crush the lowly. The rich get richer at the expense of the poor. Those with food have more than enough, whilst others go hungry. But through the life of Jesus we can see how wonderful the upside-down world of the gospel really can be. No one is too lowly, too weak, or too undesirable for God. There are no outcasts in God’s kingdom. God doesn’t look to the outward signs of status and success, but rather God looks at the content of our hearts. Every time we reach out to others to share God’s love, we bring the age to come to life into the here and now. Mary responded, “Here am I,” to the angel Gabriel, we too

are to respond to the gospel and say, “Yes,” to living into our faith, with changed hearts and lives. The sad thing is that what Mary sings about in the past tense we see as something for the future. There is a link missing in this chain - and that link is you and I. When
we live into our faith, reaching out to the lost and proclaim the Good News in both word and deed, then little by little we help turn the world upside down. It is not that we can change the whole world, but by living into the concern that Jesus taught us for the poor and the needy, we make the coming kingdom, the reign of God, real in our hearts. The mighty are as good as cast down, the lowly as good as lifted up, and the hungry are as good as filled, for the Kingdom of God has come near, and that future tense moves to where God intended it to be in the present, and in the past. PART 2 Merkinch Enterprise Highland rugby Club The Committee AGrEED to award £32,000 (over 2 years) towards the cost of community development projects run by the Highland rugby Club. Coaching Highland The Committee AGrEED to award £12,741 (over 2 years) towards the cost of providing leadership training in the field of sport as part of the sports Leaders Award Programme. Highland senior Citizens’ Network The Committee AGrEED to award up to £1,000 towards the cost of participating in the scottish Older People’s Assembly Conference, subject to approval of relevant expenditure by the City Manager. Birchwood Highland The Committee AGrEED to award £9,950 towards the cost of an outdoor activity programme for clients of the organisation. Merkinch Community Centre The Committee DECLINED to award £6,000 towards the cost of running an Inverness Jazz Festival on the grounds that it did not show sufficient evidence of community benefit. strategic salt storage Facilities - Longman Depot, Inverness There had been circulated a report dated 14 september 2011 by the Director of Transport, Environmental and Community services outlining a request by Transport scotland to form a strategic salt storage facility at the Longman Depot, which occupies land owned by the Inverness Common Good Fund. The Area roads and Transport Manager presented the report and in response to Members’ specific queries commented as follows: the sublet would not affect the income received by the Common Good Fund; use of the landfill site was not an option at the moment; and this would not interfere with any ongoing works to clean up the site. The Committee APPrOvED: the request from Transport scotland for the Council to lease an area of land within the Longman Depot for the purpose of locating a strategic salt stockpile; and that the Agreement with Transport scotland (or their nominated agent) will be for 5 years with a

break clause, subject to a six month notice period. White Bridge and Cantray Bridge There had been circulated, dated 29 september 2011, by the Director of Transport, Environmental and Community services providing Members with options for the repair and restoration of Cantray Bridge. Mr D Mackenzie presented the report and invited Members to comment on the proposals being recommended. Members commented as follows: closure of the Cantray Bridge had left 82 households without direct access to Nairn and Inverness without a long detour; the closure was a financial and logistical burden on people living in the area; the standard of road to the West was poor and could deteriorate with excessive use; the bridge should remain open for cars; with development such as the Brackla Distillery, consideration should be given developer contributions; it is important that communities, wherever they are, get the access and egress required to carry out their daily lives; and as this was a strategic requirement, why was the City Committee being asked to make recommendations to Transport, Environmental and Community services. Officers commented that the bridge’s listed status meant that there was a need to protect the bridge as well as repair it. If the City Committee supported the recommendation made by officers, it had a good chance of getting on the Council’s Capital programme as per the recommendation. Mr r Balfour, seconded by Mr J Crawford, moved that recommendation ii should be amended to include the words ‘and vehicles up to 3 tonnes gvw’ and this was agreed. The Committee therefore AGrEED to recommend to the TEC services Committee that the Council: construct a local realignment of the B9090, and a new crossing of the river Nairn, near White Bridge, repair/strengthen Cantray Bridge, for use by pedestrians and cyclists and vehicles up to 3 tonnes gvw; preserve the existing White Bridge for use by pedestrians and cyclists; andadd these proposals to the programme for the replacement/re-

furbishment of Major and Lifeline Bridges to be included in the Council’s Capital Programme. Rural Inverness LEADER Funding There had been circulated dated 3 september 2011 by the Corporate Manager providing Members with an overview of the Highland LEADEr Programme and specifically its operation and impact on rural Inverness. Appreciation was expressed for the work done by the Corporate Manager and the Aird and Loch Ness Ward Manager for the work carried out in support of the LEADEr Programme. The Committee NOTED: the range of projects funded and their level of expenditure in rural Inverness; and that other applicants in rural Inverness should be encouraged to consider making applications to LEADEr for their project. Events and Festivals Annual Report There had been circulated report dated 29 september 2011 by the Inverness City Manager providing details of the 2010-2011 Inverness Festivals programme’s end of year financial position; a progress report on the 2011-12 Inverness Festivals programme; and a review of the work undertaken in Canada with the Calgary Highland Games Committee. The Events Officer provided Members with an overview of the activities of the Events and Festivals Working Group and the work carried out by the Events Officer on his recent trip to Calgary, Canada.
Members started by congratulating the Events Officer on his recent attainment of an Msc. in International Events Management. They then commented that: events and festivals were generating a positive profile for the City; work was being carried out with Culloden Academy to encourage younger people to participate in Highland Games; and Armed Forces Day activities detracted from the opening of the Highland Games and should be reconsidered for future Games.

Suppose it is true after all? Suppose it is true after all that hell is a reality? A sceptic sneeringly asked. ‘Where is hell?’ The ready and true answer came: ‘At the end of a Christ-rejecting life’ What lies at the end of the life that you are now leading? The scriptures say, ‘It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement’ (Hebrews 9:27).
Two Friends were talking on religious topics. They discussed the question of punishment for sin after they died. They settled to their own satisfaction that there would be none. They decided that Hell was a myth. They argued that God was a God of love and could not consign His creatures to everlasting punishment. The conversation stopped when a Christian, who had been a silent listener to the discussion said, ‘‘Suppose it is true after all?’’ The words seemed to fall on the other two with crushing force. The power of God seemed to be behind those words. Solemn silence reigned for many minutes. God had spoken. Suppose it is true after all that God must punish sin? How would you stand before him? What could you say to him? How would you measure up before the Judge? ‘’Because he hath appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained: whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead’’ (Acts 17:31)
“
Suppose it is true after all that the Lord Jesus is the only Saviour and His death the only means by which you can be fitted for God’s presence? What if you neglect him? “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?” (Hebrews 2:3). Suppose it is true after all that the much -despised ‘blood of Jesus’ is the only thing that can cleanse you from your sins? Has it cleansed you before God, or are you still in your sins going on rapidly to the eternity of the lost? “The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7) Suppose it is true after all, as Scripture states, that salvation is not of works? “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). What then is all the church-going, Sunday school teaching, sick-visiting and the like worth if you rely on any of these as good works to save or to help to save you? Worse than useless. A fatal mistake, if persisted in. In God’s sight “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6) Suppose it is true after all? If it is true, how terrible will be your doom if you ‘die in you sins’ (John 8:24). Come now to Christ and be saved. “Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). It is true. Act on it.

Parliament Blog & Tides “ Parliament Blog ”
Most of us realise how sensible our parents are, only after we have left childhood behind. The american writer, Mark Twain encapsulated that when he said : "when I was fourteen my father was so ignorant - it was embarrassing. Now that I am 21 it is amazing how much the old man had learned over the past 7 years." (or words to that efffect). So, it was that my late father used to advise my brother, sister and myself that the biggest mistake in life that one can make is to spurn a good opportunity. 2012 will offer many opportunities for the North of Scotland, and my job will be to try to ensure we take advantage of them. Both as local MSP, and also as the Scottish Government minister responsible for Energy enterprise and tourism, I have the chance to work with businesses to make things happen - and to make them happen in the Highlands as often as I can. 2012 will see the London Olympics, and the Scottish Government welcomes that event to the UK, whilst seeing the opportunity that it allows us, to attract Londoners who want to get away from it all, to come to Scotland for some peace and quiet, fresh air, and perhaps a dram or two! So, whatever life holds for you and yours in 2012, I hope we can be positive and make the most of it - slainte!
When you’re phoned by a journalist in the last few hours of work before Christmas, it’s hard to know what to expect. You may be asked to react to anything from a serious last-minute Christmas crisis to a heart-warming tale about a reindeer. The phone call I received on 23rd December this year began unexpectedly. "Are you a reader of GQ magazine?" I was asked. When you’re talking to journalists, even from some fairly far-flung parts of the media, it often seems a bit blunt to confess that you don’t faithfully read their work each week. Even so, I was forced to concede that I am not a subscriber. Critics of my dress sense might say it shows. Fortunately, in this case no egos were bruised because the inquiry came from closer to home on behalf of the Inverness Courier and the Strathspey & Badenoch Herald. "Did I know that I was the eighteenth most influential man in Britain (according to GQ)?" and, much more importantly, "Did I wish to react to the fact that I was above Simon Cowell in the list for the first time?" It’s hard to know what to say to either question – but I suppose it’s a nice surprise, even if not one to be taken too seriously. A few days later, I learnt that Boris Johnson topped the list which tended to confirm the latter point!

Chef’s Confidential Skate Wing With Prawns And Capers Just before Christmas a good friend of mine came to the restaurant and asked me if I could get him some skate wings, its funny but I had not thought about skate wings for a long time. During our conversation I took a mental note and ordered my friend and myself some skate wings, and over the festive period I tried out the recipe at home and its safe to say that skate may appear back on the menu soon. Some people are put off skate because its served on the bone as a point of fact its not actual bone but cartilage. so when cooked the meat easily folks off and there's no worries about BONES! Serves 4 people. Ingredients 4 skate wings about 7-9 oz, they will need to be skinned 3 teaspoons of vegetable oil 5 oz of butter juice of one lemon 3 oz of drained capers 4 oz of cooked prawns chopped parsley seasoning Method Season the skate wings with salt and pepper and dust with flour, make sure you shake off the excess. Heat the oil in a large heavy based frying pan, add the skate wings and cook for about 4-6 minutes on each side until golden in colour. Once the skate wings are cooked take tem out of the pan and keep them warm by placing them on a plate and covering loosely with tin foil. Wipe the pan out with some paper towel and return to the heat. Add the butter, lemon juice. Wait for the butter to begin to bubble then add the prawns and the capers and toss through for a minute. Remove the pan from the heat and add the chopped parsley and pinch of salt and pepper, give a quick toss through. Place the skate wings on to plates and spoon the butter mixture equally over the wings. Served with some boiled new potatoes. Hope you enjoy. Dreaming of... ...Croatia
The former Yugoslavia used to be one of the most popular holiday destinations and Croatia is working hard to promote the country again. Croatia is a Central European and Mediterranean country, bordering Slovenia in the west, Hungary in the north, Serbia in the east and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the south. Croatia has a strange shape (similar to a croissant) - similar to no other country in the world - which comes as a result of five centuries of expansion by the Ottoman (Turkish) empire towards Central Europe (although Croatia was never conquered by the Turks). The 'land of 1,000 islands' with its warm crystal clear seas and luscious Mediterranean vegetation, thick macchi or pine underbush where the sweet fragrance of herbs such as rosemary, myrtle, thyme, sage and lavender mix with the salty sea air. In 1991 Croatia became an independent democracy, its national treasures include Roman relics, medieval walled cities, Byzantine basilicas, 13th century ramparts and 16th century palaces. Cobbled streets in its character-filled towns have chimed to the footsteps of countless generations and bell towers in Baroque churches have rung the changes of a checkered past. See the fabulous mosaics in the Basilica of Euphrasius in Porec, the Dubrovnik ramparts and the Roman ruins at Solin. Dubrovnik has been called the most perfectly preserved medieval city in the world, which has for centuries rivalled Venice as a major trading port. The huge walls, built between the 11th and 17th centuries are still intact. The churches, monasteries, palaces, wide marble-paved squares, steep cobble-stepped streets and houses have remained unchanged for centuries. But Dubrovnik is no museum. It is alive with the comings and goings of people whose homes line the narrow streets and sunlit squares enclosed by massive walls. Take a walk along the stone ramparts of the city for the best views, before venturing inside to experience many treasures. Visit beautiful churches, palaces, interesting museums, markets and bazaars. Crystal clear sea for swimming, snorkelling and diving (there are several recognised dive schools) and lots of island hopping ferries to take you to many of the offshore islets and outcrops. Sailing is a super way to enjoy the coastal seas, and boats and berths can be hired in many little ports. Water skiing and windsurfing are also popular in high season. Little fishing ports are scattered along the coastline – ensuring a fresh supply of seafood for delicious local dishes. Find your own island for a day. Fix a price in advance with a small water taxi, take a picnic and let the 'captain' decide – go in the morning and agree a time to collect you later in the day. Away from the coast, glorious rural scenery lines your route to timeless tiny villages. There are said to be 400 species of fish thriving in local waters. Local dishes include brodeta, mixed fish stew with rice. The Italian influence on Croatia extends to its inexpensive specialities with pizza and pasta dishes in many eateries. Meat specialities include prsut – a parma ham equivalent, served as a starter with local cheese in oil, cevapcici – little rissoles of beef, onion, and herbs and rznjici – pork kebabs. Local wines include some from organic vineyards. From May to October average daily temperatures are above 20oC and average rainfall low, but even in the winter months they don't go below 12oC, which is pleasantly warm, and you can fly direct from Scotland.
