The Editor

Every January the USA celebrates Martin Luther King Day. Although most are familiar with him and his "I have a Dream" speech, I doubt many of us know what his dream was or whether it came true. He actually spoke about several dreams in that speech (which I would recommend you watch or listen to) but they were all based around a central theme - that all people are created equal. Is that something that we recognise in modern society? Despite the tireless efforts of thousands of individuals like King who have and continue to work for equality, we still encounter racism, gender bias, and many other 'phobias' and prejudices.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself in my first blog since becoming an MSP for the Highlands and Islands. I grew up in Ullapool and worked in Inverness as a mental health pharmacist for 20 years before entering politics. I now live in Strathpeffer with my husband and three children. I’m keen for my children to have the opportunity to live and work here in future, so I have a vested interest in the Highlands and Islands flourishing! You can be sure that I will work hard for everyone in the region over the next five years. If I can be of any help, please contact my office in Dingwall on 01349 863888 or email me on maree.todd.msp@parliament. scot

The most telling comment that I have every heard about the purpose of education was from the great Irish poet, William Butler Yeats. He said that the aim is "not to fill a bucket but to light a fire." The aim is to inspire children about what might be - not just in the career they choose - but also in the way they develop and use their learning in later life. What inspires me is the chance of driving forward Scotland in our economy our NHS our schools. To create more opportunities for young people so that more can stay live and work in their own part of Scotland. In my own role as MSP this year I hope to continue to work to see the new Justice Campus created, to see a good location identified and agreed for a new Prison replacing Porterfield, and to continue working with The Highland Council, in but a few years, to transform Inverness Castle into a major visitor attraction.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those, either from the communities and organisations or from the funding bodies for making the Funding Fayre I hosted last week such a great success. I would also like to extend thanks to the Highland Council who supported the event by providing a venue, to the local Tesco in the Community Team for providing refreshments and to my constituency office team who worked very hard to pull the event together. The purpose was to help community groups and third sector organisations to make contact with funding bodies. I am sure that many of the groups in attendance will use the information they gathered on the various funding opportunities to help take their community projects forward. We really don’t hear enough about all these people working away behind the scenes in our communities helping others out. Finally, a Merry Christmas to all and my very best wishes for 2018.

Reader, God will not force you to repent and trust Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. He doesn't do the repenting for us, only we can do that. That is how God made us, with a free will and responsibility. God will have all men and women to be saved and is long suffering to us all, not willing that any should perish. He is long-suffering, but He is not all-suffering. Behold, now is the day of salvation! www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

(Colossians 3:17)

Christian, He came down from heaven, not to do His own will but the will of Him that sent Him. By the name of which you are called, to be Christlike we cannot be living for ourselves and at the same time be in obedience to Him. We must be yearning after holiness more than happiness, our Saviour’s pleasure more than our own. We are ambassadors for our Lord Jesus Christ.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS I’m not sure what you think but so much happened in 2016 that for me it seems a bit of a blur. 2016 was a year that no-one predicted; the UK made an important decision, whether right or wrong, to leave Europe; and America made a decision which no-one thought would actually happen. I watched with interest as Donald Trump defied most, if not all predictions, and won the 2016 US election; TV cameras beamed across the pond young people in tears that their hope, which was placed in Hillary Clinton, seemed to be in tatters. Now in 2017 the old has gone and is a blurry memory and the new has arrived, so it begs the question - what will you, in 2017, hold valuable? Ask yourself that question, what is it that you hold valuable? It was Winston Churchill who stated in 1943 that, ‘the empires of the future will be empires of the mind.’ It was ideas, not nations, that would captivate and conquer the future. There are many ideas taking root in our societies, but not all these ideas are getting heard; ‘whoever shouts loudest, gets heard’, so says my mum. In a free society like ours, the market place is full of ideas, supposedly full of the right ideas; ideas to stop poverty, ideas to

increase wealth, ideas to climb the career ladder, ideas for this and that… It seems to me as though we are always looking for the next thing that will sort out our issues and problems, it seems, we no longer have anything that is worth holding valuable. I believe that within our society we are placing more value in our material treasures, we are constantly looking for the next thing; treasures are things we try to keep or get more of because of a value we place upon them. Within the Judeo-Christian tradition the most important commandment is to treasure God and his kingdom more than anything else. Matthew 22: 37-38 highlights this where Jesus was asked, ‘which is the greatest commandment… ?’, such a wonderful question to be asked, then Jesus replied, ‘love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.’ Although I am writing this short article before Christmas it is obvious by the amount of shopping that’s taking place during December that many people are rushing around looking for the next big thing, of course we can argue that what is being bought is for someone

else, however, the pressure to give big at Christmas is I believe, because, we want, we want and we want some more. Maybe 2017 is a chance for you, instead of making the usual New Year resolution that fizzles out in two months, to really look at what you hold valuable in your life. A wonderful writer called Dallas Willard wrote, ‘we cannot but serve our treasures, we labour all day for them and think about them all night. They fill our dreams.’ I would suggest that valuing your treasures or placing your hope in the political sphere of life will not be enough to fulfil your deepest longing for real meaning and value. Make 2017 the year you place your value in the right thing; let that be found in Jesus. He is the only one who can transform every aspect of your heart, your mind and your soul place your value in Him.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

The year ahead! Our small team of 4 based here in the Moray Firth, will no doubt have a busy year ahead.as usual. I should also give a mention to Susie, the springer spaniel, who I don’t think has been properly introduced. Many of you will have met her though, as she goes everywhere with us – mad as a box of frogs !

Summer Months Mowing; best practice is never cut shorter than 1”. Mowing too close is the most destructive thing you can do to a lawn (usually a man-thing) and in particular encourages moss to flourish ! June is when we will likely see the first signs of Red Thread fungal disease damage (wet summers are the worst). Lets hope we get away without a repeat of last summer’s wash out. Autumn Months

Although we don’t know exactly what the weather will throw at us this season, we have a fair idea what we will be asked to tackle. Highlights will likely include: Winter Months Moss and thatch; we will be aerating and scarifying all hours of the day to get through everybody before the Spring Weed and Feed Treatments start. Also look out for leatherjackets emerging (crane fly grubs) and eating lawn roots, can cause devastation.

Moss control treatments and winter feeds; we will want to get all our customers’ lawns ready for next winter, and most will want to think about aerating and scarifying outwith the growing season, either themselves or using us and our machines. For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Weedkill and Spring fertiliser; we will want some decent weather to get lawns off to a good start. Recently, spring has been very late.
