“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the Kingdom of God? Be not deceived. (1st Corinthians 6:9)
Reader, do you care? When you stand before God what will you do if you’ve rejected His Son Jesus Christ here on earth? Oh the folly of rejecting Christ when you lift up your eyes in Hell being in torments, crying for mercy at last, when mercy is passed. Behold, NOW is the day of salvation, the day of grace. WHOSOEVER believes and receives Jesus Christ as their Saviour should not perish but have eternal life. Eternity where?

For many, the prospect of a New Year can be daunting sometimes but I recently came across this quote which I quite liked:
The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. Gilbert K. Chesterton

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings ‘Happy New Year!’ It’s the phrase we’ve all heard and/or said many, many times by the time you read this piece as we leave 2017 behind and step into 2018. We are now officially in a ‘new’ year. We often plan ‘new’ things for a new year. Even when we’re up to our eyes preparing for Christmas, which is becoming increasingly frantic and frenetic, most of us also have on our horizons plans of one kind or another for 2018. The topic of conversations around the kitchen table, on the sofa in front of the TV or when out with friends socialising revolves around or touches on what we hope to do when the New Year comes. What new thing will we do? What will we aspire to? What do we hope for when the New Year arrives? So now that it’s here, what new thing are you looking for in 2018? It might be a new car. The one you have is either coming to that stage where you’re spending more on repairs and maintenance than it’s worth or your finance deal for paying it off is coming to an end; but either way, you are going to get a new car.
Or maybe the time for renewing your car, home or energy insurance is approaching and you’re planning on getting a better new deal. If we’re to believe the TV advert, then you just need to ‘GoCompare’ and ‘when your choices are many you can save a pretty penny, when you go online to Go Compare’. Or maybe you’re planning on entering a new chapter in a special relationship you have, and you’re new thing will be to get engaged or married to show that one special person in your life just how much you mean it when you say ‘I love you’. We all want to do a new thing. God also wants to do new things. He says in Isaiah 43.19, ‘Look, I am doing a new thing….I will make a pathway through the wilderness and make streams in the desert’. The new thing God talks about impacts and influences every aspect of our lives and isn’t confined to any one particular area. He says he will give clear direction and purpose to our lives, like a pathway through a wilderness, and provide

fulfillment and pleasure in our lives, like a stream in a desert. When we trust our lives to Jesus Christ, whose death on the Cross reconciles us to God, we embark on a journey that has direction and purpose, and which brings fulfillment and pleasure. This is the new thing from God that we can embrace and enjoy. Our lives then have a new look, a new purpose, a new pleasure which will never grow old, never wear out, and will never have to be renewed or replaced! No need to ‘GoCompare’ to find the best deal. We can trust the God who made us and who loves us and wants the very best for us. God is the God of new things. I hope 2018 will be the year that this new thing becomes your new thing!

In December we had two “star” letters firstly seeking information about overweight pets and secondly, care of new pups and kittens. These are quite large subjects but we will point out the main issues to consider: Weight management – It is New Year already and we are all considering losing weight and keeping fit. Our nurses hold daily clinics all year round and regularly see patients that are a little heavy for their breed and size. We assess their current weight and body condition score, then calculate what their ideal weight should be and work out an individual weight loss programme for them. We usually request monthly visits to assess your pets progress. This service with our nurses is free! Care of pups and kittens – We do not recommend giving pets as presents and it should be remembered that pets are a lifelong commitment however, the main issues to consider with pups and kittens are: t Vaccinations – Pups and kittens require a course of vaccinations before they go outside on ground where other animals can access. Usually a course of two injections 2-3 weeks apart are needed. They can start the course from 8-9 weeks of age. t Parasite control – We recommend regular worming and flea treatment.
t Training and Socialisation - The first few weeks of ownership can be quite daunting for your new pet as they get used to a new environment and new family. It is important they are socialised well to be able to cope in the big wide world, such as getting used to car travel, noises, children, and other pets for example. We hold puppy socialisation and training classes in our Culloden surgery.
Email us
t Microchipping – Since April 2016 it is a legal with your pet care queries requirement that all dogs over 8 weeks old are t Neutering - It can be done from and the most interesting or microchipped. It is recommended that you do microchip around 5 – 6 months of age in topical will be published. cats too to ensure you are reunited quickly should they dogs and cats. admin@cullodenvets go missing. .co.uk t Insurance – It is up to you whether To help break down the above costs Culloden Vets have to take out pet insurance or not. We do a Pet Health Club where monthly direct debits can be recommend it. Just remember as veterinary arranged covering the above plus much more. treatment options advance so do the costs and private medical treatment can be expensive.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times In the run up to Christmas, my colleague Richard Lochhead MSP has launched a campaign to end the rip-off delivery surcharges across Scotland. The problem of high delivery charges for consumers in remote or rural areas continues to cause hardship for many of my constituents and businesses in the Highlands and Islands – an area that is impacted more than any other part of the UK. As someone who has lived and grown up in the Highlands, I have always thought that it is completely unfair that consumers in rural and remote areas pay more for delivery than anywhere else in the UK. Please support the campaign by singing the petition and if you have a story to tell please share it with us: www.fairdeliverycharges.scot/

I used the opportunity of Small business Saturday to stop off at one of our local butchers to partake of their excellent range of high quality butcher meat and many other mouth-watering attractions. Small Business Saturday is now an annual event but perhaps should feature more as an all year round resolution. I have a specific interest in championing Scotland’s excellent food and drink offer – of which there is plenty in the Highlands. Scotch beef, Scotch lamb, specially selected pork, Scottish salmon and of course, Scotch whisky are some of the better known ones that we produce which are enjoyed at home and internationally. We can all do more to support locally produced and locally sourced food and drink, especially as we fill our freezers and cupboards for the festive season. I encourage everyone to think of supporting local small businesses as well as the national multiples.

At this time of year, you can’t help but think back over and reflect on the highlights and challenges of the preceding year. We are all well used to a whole year being cut into bite size clips on our tv screens on the year in review programmes. My 2017 ‘montage’ would of course have to include the unexpected general election, but the day to day work of helping people is the real highlight of being an MP. Over the past year I have seen first hand the great work being undertaken in our communities by organisations and volunteers such as the Merkinch Community Centre and Badenoch and Strathspey Community Transport. In parliament, I was proud to be able to stand up and give a voice to those struggling under the Universal Credit system by sharing their experiences. I look forward to the challenge of continuing this work in the coming year and wish all spotlight readers the very best for 2018.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
GreenThumb, About us and looking towards the New Year. Our small team of 4, based here in the Moray Firth, will have a busy year ahead as we will have over 1,100 regular customers presenting us with their lawn problems. Sounds a lot, but we are a pretty small franchise up here though. GreenThumb across the UK will have 500,000 customers this year! As we will be providing local monthly updates as the season unfolds through the year again in this magazine, we thought it might be nice to let you see where we are based.
Although we don’t know exactly what the weather will throw at us this season, we have a fair idea what we will be asked to tackle. Highlights will likely include:
Winter Months Moss and thatch; we will be aerating and scarifying all hours of the day to get through everybody before the Spring Weed and Feed Treatments start. Also look out for leatherjackets emerging (crane fly grubs) and eating lawn roots, sometimes causing devastation.
Spring Months Weed kiill and Spring fertiliser; we will want some decent weather to get lawns off to a good start. Spring 2017 was lovely, but a nice Spring has been a rarity recently..
Summer Months Mowing; best practice is never cut shorter than 1”. Mowing too close is the most destructive thing you can do to a lawn (usually a man-thing) and in particular encourages moss to flourish! June is when we will likely see the first signs of Red Thread fungal disease damage (wet summers are the worst). We’ve had 2 wet Summers in a row now.
Autumn Months Moss control treatments and winter feeds; we will want to get all our customers’ lawns ready for next winter, and most will want to think about aerating and scarifying outwith the growing season, either themselves or using us and our machines. Alastair Watt
For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per treatment, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairn and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Reader, The Lord Jesus Christ is God’s Righteousness to everyone that believeth. He alone is able to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. Why would you be a lover of pleasures or riches and not a lover of God’s Son, who died for your sin on the Cross of Calvary? Reader, Eternity where? It is appointed unto you once to die and after this your judgment.

plans for the garden. DO clean garden furniture and decking, slimy moss and algae can start growing from February so now is a great time to get ahead of the game.
GARDEN DESIGN AND
DON’T prune Plum and Cherry trees at this time of year. Pruning puts them at risk of Silverleaf disease, so they should be pruned mid-summer. DON’T fertilize your plants in your garden or inside your house at this time of year. Most plants are having a rest at the moment, and you really don’t want to be encouraging tender new growth. DON’T cut back any herbaceous perennials that have attractive seed heads left on them. Many also use their old foliage to protect the crown of the plant over the winter, so whilst there are some plants that do need cutting back, it is not right for every plant.

THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER, HAVING PREVIOUSLY RUN HIS OWN COMMERCIAL GARDENING BUSINESS FOR TWELVE YEARS.
TOM ALSO BLOGS AS THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER. We’re right in the middle of winter now, yet despite this there is a lot we can be doing in the garden at the moment. Not only is it a good excuse to get a bit of exercise outside, but some work done in the garden now can really reap rewards once spring arrives. I created a number of new beds in my back garden this year and at the moment I am taking the opportunity to really make sure there are no remnants of weeds in there waiting to burst into life in a few months. I’m also cutting neat edges in the beds and clearing the last of any debris like dead leaves and twigs out. Here are some other jobs to be getting on with in the garden in January:
DO prune Apple and Pear trees. This needn’t be an intimidating job, check out my blog for some step-by-step instructions for pruning small trees. Remember, the final form of an Apple tree should look a bit like a bowl, and a Pear tree should resemble the shape of a Champagne flute. A blackbird should be able to happily fly between the branches of both once you have finished. DO keep the birds fed. Put out a variety of feed if you can, and try to make some water available.
