PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Learn to love the you that you hide My wife and I recently had the privilege of leading a weekend youth retreat for a Salvation Army church based on Oxford Street, London. The weekend’s theme was #loveyourselfie: discovering what it means to know and love yourself in order to love your neighbour. 35 young people all seeking to know more about how Jesus is able to impact upon their life and how they, in turn, might impact upon other people. A task like this, leading a weekend full of enquiring, thinking people, is by no means an easy task to take on. Trying to understand for the first time, or trying to re-understand afresh, what Jesus is able to do in your life is not always an easy thing to grasp hold of. The world we currently live in is pulling young and older people left, right and centre; to me, seemingly propagandising its agenda wrapped up in material wealth. For some Christian writers such as Thomas à Kempis attachment to Jesus, demands detachment from the world.

For most though, it means that as a follower of Jesus we are called to engage with the world, without partaking of its values and ideas. Romans 12:2 (NIV) states, ‘do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…’ For me, within Christian thought, learning to love yourself is not based on egocentric vanity. As Christians we are called to live a selfless life; advocating for others, loving others, serving others, whilst also understanding more fully the parts of us which we don’t yet love. To really know self in a world based on egocentric philosophy is an enormous challenge; Jesus said, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.’ Have you considered asking yourself, ‘how do I love my neighbour?’ The way that you love your neighbour may tell you something about the you that you hide. Is it a selfless love? Is it even love? What a challenge that is!

In a song called ‘Will you come and follow me’, Graham Maule & John L. Bell beautifully write ‘Will you love the ‘you’ you hide, if I but call your name?’ Here the writers convey the message that Jesus is calling you to fully know yourself; looking inwardly at yourself. As a Christian I firmly believe that knowing self fully and being fully human is found only in Jesus. He said: ‘…I have come [into the world] that they may have life, and have it to the full.’ Jesus came for you, and in knowing Him you will become fully you. Are you hiding something of yourself? Are you being pulled, by the world, from pillar to post to be the you that it wants you to be? To have a faith in and to follow Jesus is to put aside self. In doing this you will discover, through your selfless love of others, more about yourself and you will, I believe, learn to love the you that you hide.

By now you are probably reading SpotLight sitting in your favourite chair (or sofa or bed) having over indulged in food, wine, tv and relatives. The period inbetween Christmas and New Year is a time to take a breather before we launch ourselves into the New Year celebrations. The temptation to overindulge again is indeed strong and only the truly strong will succeed!! But help is at hand, surely? January is the season of fitness classes and weight loss programmes where we reorganise our bodies into something resembling our former self - Good luck and Have a great 2016!!

our heavy American golf course aerators out and

effectively obviously as with a machine which

about to aerate lawns. We do hollow-core tining,

actually removes a core of material. I’ve

included a picture of our aerator, a formidable piece of kit, and not available in B&Q or at your local garden centre! Just a reminder; the leaves are all off now, and if they are still in drifts on your grass, it’s a very good idea to lift them. Several weeks without light and air under a pile of leaves is likely to kill/seriously damage a patch of grass. For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN ANALYSIS on 01667 460012, or email us at:

inverness@greenthumb.co.uk where the machine removes thousands of plugs from the ground. Golf courses are doing this too at this time not surprisingly. Aerating the ground is multi-beneficial as it allows air into the ground, helps with drainage,

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES A guid New Year tae ane and a’ - I hope you all had peaceful festivities. I certainly enjoyed the rare opportunity to spend time at home with the family. The break also afforded me the opportunity to visit various charities for whom work does not stop over the festive period. Indeed, it was helping MFR Cash for Kids wrap gifts that reminded of the much quoted words that ‘we can judge a nation on how it treats its most vulnerable’. Whether it is buying gifts for children of families in difficult times or standing up for justice and fairness, here in Scotland we have a long history of leading with compassion and humility. Even in a time that people are feeling the pinch they are still generous enough to think of those who have less, those who need a helping hand. May this spirit and kindness be a feature of our society in 2016 and beyond.

The decision taken to scrap the Carbon Capture and Storage Schemes in Peterhead, and in Yorkshire may become to be seen as one of the most short-sighted ever taken in the UK - ranking alongside such as Dr Beeching's scrapping of the railways, or the slow destruction of our world leading occupational pension regime. Without taking carbon emissions from coal and gas fired power generation - how can climate change be tackled? And with it what an opportunity to be at the forefront of a new industry, not in true British fashion, at the coos tail? It is never too late to persuade the UK Government to reverse a poor decision; but I fear that a strategic opportunity has been forfeited. Only a few days before the decision, the Energy Secretary was extolling the virtues of CCS. So plainly the decision was made not by her but by Mr Osborne for political reasons. The worst kind, in my experience.

INNES HOUSE

Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

Offer extended! Any couple booking their wedding within six months of their wedding date, will be offered complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a 'Champagne Toast' upgrade of their chosen drinks package
