Pastoral Letter and Church Meetings Happy New Year! Here we are in the first few days of 2012. I wonder as you look ahead to the next 12 months, do you have something planned that you are particularly looking forward to? Is there a specific occasion which you already think will be the highlight of 2012? Perhaps you will have an event to celebrate, like a wedding, a big birthday or a significant anniversary. Or maybe your highlight of this year will be the successful completion of a challengelearning a new skill, achieving a qualification or passing exams. For sports fans around the country, undoubtedly one the year’s highlights will be the Olympic Games which open in London on 27th July and the Paralympic Games which follow a month later. For most of us keen to follow the Games, we will witness this international sporting spectacle at a distance through television and radio coverage. Only a small fraction of those interested in the Games will get the chance to actually experience the Olympics first-hand. The majority of tickets for Olympic events were allocated in a random ballot last summer. Unsurprisingly demand for tickets massively outstripped supply. I read that for the men's 100m athletics final alone more than one million tickets were requested! Perhaps those of you still desperately

wanting to go the Olympics are waiting with baited breath as the final batch of tickets will be allocated through another ballot in the Spring. As good as the television and radio coverage will be, there is nothing quite like being at a big occasion like the Olympics. I’ve not been to an Olympic event so I can only imagine what it would be like to gather with people from around the world to experience first-hand the excitement and atmosphere of such an amazing event. As much of a highlight as the London Olympics will undoubtedly be in 2012, in the Bible there is the description of a gathering of people infinitely more spectacular than the scenes we will witness as people gather at the various sporting venues around London this summer. The scene in the Bible I am talking about is of heaven. The description is recorded by a man called John who writes: After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

(Revelation 7:9) This scene is not based around a running track, a swimming pool or a cycling velodrome, but a throne. The significance of this international gathering is found in the one who is on the throne- the Lamb. This is Jesus Christ, God’s only Son who came to our world and gave his life that we might have our sin and wrongdoing forgiven. Notice with me finally, the criteria for those people who gathered around Jesus. They do not need a ticket, nor were they picked via a random ballot. In this scene we see people gathering around Jesus who could joyfully shout “Salvation belongs to our God”; that is, during their earthly lives these people had come to trust Jesus personally and experience for themselves his offer of forgiveness. So whatever you are looking forward to in 2012 and whatever highlights you might experience in the coming year, I pray that you would consider this description of heaven. You too could be part of this amazing scene by coming to know and trust Jesus for yourself. What better highlight to this year could you ask for than that? Gordy Mackay Culduthel Christian Centre

Parliament Blog & Tides “ Parliament Blog ” For the young ones, Christmas is a time of joy and innocence and maybe for adults a time when we can see the world through their young eyes and minds. I have been hugely impressed by the quality of young people that I have met when visiting various businesses, schools and universities, and all of us want and need to do more to help them achieve their potential. The news that the Beechwood campus at Inverness has received funding of up to £51 million is great news for the North, so many more young people here will be able to pursue their education to that level locally. Building also on apprenticeships and training is a continuing area where we are doing much more, but need to do more still. 2011 was an exciting and eventful year, and 2012 promises to be no less so. I think it is time for us all to focus on what we can do for the better, especially those of us in Government. So, I will try over the remainder of the winter period to listen to the Ink Spots (remember them?) “eliminate the negative” and focus on the positive for the year ahead. Let me wish all the readers of “Spotlight” a good new year.

Inverness gave a great welcome to the Highlanders, 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, at the start of December as they marched through the city centre to mark their return from a 6 month tour of duty in Afghanistan. I was pleased to be able to represent the UK Government the following day at RAF Kinloss to see '4 SCOTS' receive their new colours from the Duke of Edinburgh. Both occasions gave local people and service families a chance to recognise the professionalism of our troops, to celebrate their return and to thank them for the difficult and dangerous work they have been doing. The happiness of the occasion was mixed with sadness at the loss of Corporal Michael Pike and Highlander Scott McLaren, both of whom served with great distinction. A complex but important mission to bring lasting security to the people of Afghanistan is not yet at its end - so, as we welcome the Highlanders home, we also think of members of '3 SCOTS', the Black Watch, who relieved them in Helmand, and their families. Those who serve in our armed forces make an extraordinary sacrifice - and being apart from their families at this time of year is only a small part of it. I know that having the support of our community during a difficult time means a lot to them. I hope Spotlight readers have had a good Christmas – and wish you a very peaceful and happy New Year.

Have you made up your own "God"? God is Holy and He demands something from us. He wants us to put our faith in His Son for salvation. Many people today think that they will be in Heaven as long as they don’t commit any heinous crimes. But the Bible teaches that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). We have all – you & me, everyone - fallen short of God’s moral standards. We have all broken His laws, and our sin makes us unfit for heaven. Only by personally accepting Christ as our own Lord and Saviour – believing that he died for OUR sins and was raised for OUR justification, and forsaking our sins to live in subjection to Him – can we approach this Holy God. The Bible says "He that believeth on the "You turn things upside down, as if the potter were Son (Jesus Christ) hath everlasting life: and he that thought to be like the clay." Isaiah 29:16 believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”(John 3:35-36) Some have turned God into a loving Santa Claus What have you done then with Jesus which is called who showers us with good things when we are nice. Christ? When we are naughty, however, He isn’t quite as generous. Perish the thought that He would ever God is Just and will by no means pass by sin. punish us! He is a loving God. They think that in the You may not like thinking about this, but the Bible states end He will forgive everyone…except the Hitlers and that God has appointed a day in which He will judge you the Stalins. by that man (Jesus Christ) whom He has appointed. Each of us will personally meet with God one day. We Others have made God into a family doctor. He is will either meet Him in our sins and be judged by Him, there when we need Him. Most of the time we can and be cast into the lake of fire, or if we are saved, we will get on quite well without Him. In fact, we rarely even meet Him clothed in the righteousness of His Dear Son, think about Him unless we have a problem. But when so that when God looks at us He no longer sees our sin, misfortune strikes, they want God to hear their call for but instead sees us clothed in the righteousness of Christ help and come to their rescue. . "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, (John 3:18). Still others have formed God into a watchmaker. He created the universe, set it in motion and then God is Gracious and Merciful and has given us ample they think He sat back to watch it tick away on its time and opportunity to accept His one way of salvation. own. He is far removed and doesn’t get involved in “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be our affairs. So they believe they are free to form their saved.” Acts 16:31 own laws, their own standards of right and wrong, even their own religion. Have you made a "God" of your own liking, a "God" who

Have we formed our own opinions about who God is; what He is like, what type of lifestyles He approves of and whom He will forgive? Are we making up our own “God”? Have we turned things upside down ?

If we really want to know what God is like and what He thinks and expects of us, we must be willing to set aside our opinions and listen to what He has to say about Himself. We must turn to God’s Word, the Bible. What does the Bible say about God – the God with whom we have to do?

resembles a Santa Claus, a watchmaker, a doctor or something else? If so, then you have turned things upside down. Your "God" exists only in your imagination. He is not the God of the Bible, or the God you will meet in eternity. To be ready to meet the true God you must prepare on His terms – your own imagination will only take you to Hell.

Dreaming of... ...Vietnam and Cambodia

In these days where people are looking for more exotic destinations, Vietnam and Cambodia are among the next popular countries to travel to. Vietnam offers a fantastic range of places to see and visit, whether you are looking for sightseeing, beaches or a touring holiday. In the city locations an organised tour is a good way to help you become orientated. If you want to explore independently there are a whole array of taxis and 'cyclos' which like a modern day rickshaw offer a novel and fun way to get around. World events have inevitably cast their shadow across this country, which was for so many years the subject of news bulletins rather than travel brochures. In the last 20 years this charming nation of people has opened its doors to visitors. Not only does Vietnam have a variety of places to see, but it also enjoys a vast and beautiful coastline, mist shrouded mountains, mighty rivers and cascading waterfalls. Whether your passion is for history, scenery, food or culture the delicate tapestry of this nation will offer you all of this and much more besides. Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam, and one of the hidden gems of South East Asia. It retains an elegance and charm not often found in this part of the world. Enjoy in particular the city's French influence, seen in fine old colonial buildings and tree lined boulevards. The vibrant and dynamic Ho Chi Minh city, formerly Saigon, is the largest and most energetic city in Vietnam, and the cultural heart of the nation. Hoi An is a well preserved trading port dating back to the 15th century, and the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels (once home to 10,000 people) are well worth visiting. Cambodia was for many years off limits for travellers but now welcomes them with open arms. This magical land boasts ancient temples, dense forests, glorious beaches and a captivating culture and history. The most famous of the country's ancient sites is Angkor. This awe inspiring construction is quite rightly named as one of the 'Seven wonders of the world'. By travelling further afield you can enjoy lazy sun kissed beaches in Sihanoukville, sleepy towns and spectacular national parks. The evocatively named Phnom Penh is a beautiful city full to the brim with charmingly dilapidated colonial heritage. There is also a vibrant riverside promenade and a whole selection of cafes and restaurants. It is important to remember that with developing countries the tourism infrastructure is not as refined as in other places in the region. Hotel standards vary enormously and can be subject to delays and changes. Vietnam and Cambodia are two fantastic countries waiting to be discovered – we should all go before they become tourist traps and become spoilt.

Chef’s Confidential Chicken Casserole With Dumplings Well - the festive period has been and gone. The nights are dark and its time for log fires and comfort food…. just like this dish ! Ingredients For the casserole 4 chicken breasts 4 chicken drumsticks 3 tbsp of olive oil 3 gloves of garlic 400 g of chopped smoky bacon, (if you are not a fan of smoky normal will be good). 1 large white onion, chopped roughly 3 sticks of celery, cut into thick diagonal slices 2 large carrots, cut into thick diagonal slices 800ml of chicken stock 2 tbsp mixed herbs, (best to use would be rosemary and thyme) For the dumplings 350g plain flour (you will also need a little extra to dust) 1 tsp bicarbonate soda 300ml milk Method Pre-heat the oven to 200 c To make the dumplings … sift the plain flour and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl. Add a pinch of salt. Make a well in the middle of the bowl, pour the milk in slowly, a little at a time and, using your hands, mix until you form a dough. Take the dough and put onto a floured board and roll into a big ball. Break off 12 smaller balls and place on a plate and put them into the fridge. Take your chicken bits and season well with salt and pepper. Take a large casserole pan and place on the heat. Add the oil, once hot add the bacon and garlic and stir for a few minutes, then add the chicken and turn until all the meat is sealed. Add the onions, celery, carrots and stir through. Add the herbs, chicken stock and again stir through Now bring to the boil and place a lid on the pan and place in the oven for 15 mins. After 15 mins take the pan out and remove the lid, arrange the dumplings on top (leave a gap so the don’t join when cooking). Return to the oven for 30 mins until the dumplings are golden brown. Serve and enjoy with a hunk of bread and a nice glass of wine. Allan Little, Head Chef River House Restaurant, Inverness Tel: 01463 222033
