As the Shows and Games season kicks fully into gear it is good to reflect on all those people that give of their time without any financial reward. People that strive to create interesting and entertaining events that may not all come off perfectly but would not exist at all without their tireless efforts. If from noone else - a big THANK YOU from me and may your works continue to be fully appreciated!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS And the winner is... In sport part of the thrill is not knowing who will win and who will lose. As I write, the town of Inverness is gearing up for the Scottish cup final. You will now know whether Caley Thistle are winners or losers. They had some famous victories against the big teams in the past. There was the 3-1 win which knocked Celtic out of the Scottish cup in 2000. Do you remember the Sun headline: Super Caley Go Ballistic Celtic are Atrocious! It was fantastic for the winners but the press showed no mercy for the losers: John Barnes was sacked in short order. Our culture loves a winner but losing is not cool at all. The press build you up when you are winning and then join the chorus of disapproval when you’re losing. While Caley Thistle is on the up, my English team Newcastle United very nearly went down. Downward mobility was the story of the second half of their season and it was excruciating to watch both players and managers play out the anguished last moments of their campaign. This relegation trauma

ended in relief which soon turned to anger as they called for the owner to go: he placated them by promising to make them winners! To be called a loser is to be unacceptable and in youth culture it is a cruel insult. Nobody wants to be unpopular and nobody wants to be judged by the brand of their trainers or the shape their mobile phone. Nobody wants to be a loser in politics either and the SNP victory has been a devastating loss for the other parties. It’s tough to be judged on our performance but how does God see us? Jesus Christ welcomed losers and ate with them: prostitutes, wealthy tax collectors and other social outcasts. Jesus treated everyone with fairness and compassion and was criticised for it. He said that he was like a doctor who had come for the sick, not for the healthy. By this he meant those who needed a heart transplant because their hearts had selfishly lived in disobedience to God and his ways. The bible calls this sin. But the good news of the gospel is that Christ died

for our sins and he offers us forgiveness if we are willing to change and put our faith in his death on the cross. This free gift of forgiveness and life brings us into a life of love, joy, peace and hope. It is a free gift because we cannot earn it. But will you receive it? Receiving this gift is easy but following Jesus is not. To make Jesus Christ the number 1 priority in our lives is a choice which has costly consequences. It is not the way of popularity, it is not the way to an easy comfortable life. To stop living for ourselves and to start living for God involves a change of allegiance and a change of priorities. It is the most important decision a human being can ever make. And it is a long term investment which has consequences for eternity. Jesus said: “…Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” Luke chapter 9:24-25 Rev Alasdair Macleod Culduthel Christian Centre

Nairnshire Farming Society. Nairn Show 2015 Fun for all the The Nairnshire Farming Society is holding its’ 217th Annual Show on Saturday the 1st of August at Kinnudie Farm Auldearn. Nairn Show will have something for everyone with an excellent food fair, good quality trade stands, a full and varied programme of afternoon entertainment and an excellent display of livestock in the cattle, sheep and horse sections. This years’ show is shaping up to be a very attractive and fun-filled day for all the family and we are hoping for a good crowd.

Family!

There will also be display of vintage tractors and machinery, a range of catering facilities, including the return of a public catering marquee and a licensed bar. As ever the marquee competitions will be very competitive and no doubt will produce a wonderful display of horticulture, wine, honey, baking, produce and handicrafts.

Car parking is to be free this year whilst admission charges are held at £10 per Adult, £5 per concession and secondary school child, £1 per primary with pre-school children having free admission. Our charges are set at a level to cover the substantial set up costs associated with the show and also to enable the society to make donations to local clubs and charities.

Main Ring entertainment will include return visits by the Drakes of Hazard and Nairn and District Pipe Band. It will also feature a Vintage Tractor Parade, Horse and Carriage Display, The Penguin’s Tuxedo Street Band Livestock Parades and Children’s races. Horse Show Jumping will also take place in a separate arena and also in the main ring later in the day.

Visitors will also be treated to a varied line up of trade stands both on the field and under canvas in the Food and Craft Fairs which will offer all kinds of merchandise including local produce, fancy goods as well as the very latest cars and agricultural machinery. The Food Fair will again include cookery demonstrations throughout the day by various providers in a dedicated kitchen area.

The Nairn Show website, www.nairnshow.org.uk, will be updated regularly between now and show day to give the most up to date information regarding the show. The day will be rounded off with a Marquee Dance in the Showfield from 9pm to 1am with dancing to music by Sound Cradle.

A bit about me I started cooking as a street vendor on the streets of Kurdistan, northern Iraq. I then moved to Baghdad where I worked in a restaurant specialising in Iraqi cuisine. This is where I learned to cook two of my speciality dishes, Mixed Biryani and Mediterranean Barbecue. I then lived in Lebanon where I learned Meze and seafood dishes before moving to France where I learned the art of pastry and bakery. I have lived in the Highlands of Scotland since the year 2000 and have worked in many great restaurants and hotels. I have also done outside catering including weddings, functions, events and dinner parties. Since coming to Scotland I have learned to cook all the Scottish favourites including Cullen Skink, possibly the world's finest fish soup, stovies & oatcakes and my personal favourite Haggis Pakora.
