The Editor

Just ever so occasionally we see heartwarming examples of unity. I’m a bit of a rugby fan and by the time you read this the British and Irish Lions will have departed these shores for a 10 match tour of New Zealand. The squad draws from Scotland, Ireland (both Eire and Northern Ireland), Wales and England. The players need to bond together, respecting different nationalities but working together to achieve a common goal. New Zealand are currently ranked the number one team in the World by some distance and only by working together might they be overcome. Good luck The Lions!!

How amazing is Grace? I am sure even if you’ve not spent much time around church that you’ll be familiar with the hymn, Amazing Grace, so much so that you’ll know the words, even if it’s the only hymn you know. ‘Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me’. I wonder do you know anything of the author and that it is in many ways his autobiography? It may not sound like an autobiography when you know that he was a vicar and worked to end the slave trade in his latter years. However Newton’s early life was a long way from where it ended, he was the son of a successful and well connected ship’s captain. His mother, a godly woman, gave Newton a good education but died when he was 7 years old. He rebelled against this teaching from his pious mother, his well connected father got Newton a job as a midship-man, a junior officer with the promise of promotion. However Newton who had disregarded the education his mother had given him, also disregarded this opportunity. He was disrespectful and up to no good from the beginning. His behaviour was so bad that he found himself demoted before leaving the ship altogether. Nonetheless opportunities kept coming his way but Newton wasn’t able to learn from them. His behaviour and poor choices got the middle class officer’s son into a lot of scrapes, at one point he was almost a slave in

North Africa, mistreated and poorly fed; he was stealing raw vegetables at night to keep himself alive. At times he modified his behaviour becoming outwardly religious, but he soon went back to his cursing, blaspheming and general bad behaviour. Each time the downward spiral after made him worse than he was before. His language was so bad that he often made other roguish sailors blush. Newton at this time would be the last person you would think of as someone who would be a Christian minister; he was a vile excuse for a human being. He recognised this in himself as did others. He truly was a wretch and he knew it. However on one trip, where Newton had already diced with death following a drinking game out at sea, where he had to be pulled by the legs as he went overboard, it was dark, he was drunk and he couldn’t swim. Newton was given an amazing opportunity; you see the ship was battered in a storm, so much so that it was sinking. For several days he and the sailors tried to rescue it by bailing out water but it was taking on more and more water, the situation seemed hopeless, the holes were filled with their clothing and the food had almost all been washed away. Everyone on board was convinced that they were only putting off the inevitable, mere days away from death. It was at this point Newton the wretch cried out to God for mercy. He said that he was not sure that someone like him would have any hope of

finding mercy with God. Yet Newton did find mercy, he no longer had to try to reform his life and fail as he had done numerous times before, now the work of God had begun in his life, Newton was transformed. Like Newton, Saul of Tarsus wasn’t thinking of finding grace on the road to Damascus, as he headed over to Syria the last thing on his mind was becoming a follower of Jesus. In fact he was heading there with the same sort of ambitions that young Jihadists head to Syria today, he wanted to kill for his God. He was set on wiping out the church, on that road you’ll know he was confronted by the risen Jesus, instead of the judgement that he now knew he deserved he was called to be Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, to reach out and share with them the Good news of Jesus, Newton and Paul were both trophies of Grace. Paul said of himself that he was the chief of sinners, yet God saved him. God used the conversion of Saul the persecutor of the church to glorify Himself. You might be one of those people who have said, ‘I am beyond saving’, yet God could take Newton, who truly was a wretch, and Saul who wanted to wipe out the church and bring them to Him. You see grace means undeserved kindness, the grace of this God is not only amazing, it is glorious.

Business Profile

Moray is home to Scotland’s first specialist shade and home automation company which offers state of the art blinds and smart home products that can be remotely controlled via your phone. Cascade Blinds, based in Elgin’s Chanonry Road South, is also the north’s first Somfy Tahoma dealer, offering a wide selection of products that can be operated via any flash enabled smart phone, tablet or smartwatch using an intuitive app. The independent company was established in Inverness in 1987. It was bought over by the McCrea family four years ago, and run alongside their Inverness window blind superstore, World of Blinds. Owner, David McCrea said: “We’re keen to do something special with Cascade and with the growing demand for automated and motorised window coverings, and on it’s 30th anniversary, our direction became clear; we have launched the business from our new Moray office. We have now secured the desirable Luxaflex dealership, offering exclusive products and systems, and an awnings and canopies range. Motorisation means you can schedule the opening and closing of your blinds, curtains, awnings, garage doors, gates, velux products and security systems from one easy to use app.” The app means that you can create a cosy home environment before you even get there, as well as boost your home security: “Using a timer means you can give the impression that your home is occupied even if you have been delayed at work or are on holiday. It is without a doubt the way forward,” David continued. Cascade Blinds also offers bolt-on products including smart switches, smoke detectors, light sensors and security devices such as cameras and motion sensors. The Moray showroom offers free advice and consultation to ensure you can choose the best soft furnishing and window styling for your home. “The first consideration is deciding what your room requires. For example, does the light need softening, filtering, or blocked out completely. We offer a huge range of benefits, including exclusive patterns and designs that can create a warm, comfortable and striking environment – and they’re combined with world leading technology. A major benefit for this next generation of shade systems is that the looped cords and chains have been eliminated which removes risk for young children and vulnerable people. “We have been involved in the window styling industry for many years, and with the latest trends moving rapidly towards automation, we find this an interesting challenge from a manufacturing perspective, and also a very exciting time in the history of window coverings,” David concluded.

Cascade Blinds is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 11am to 5pm, Wednesday 10am to 2pm, and Saturday 10am to 3pm. Contact:Cascade Blinds, 9 Chanonry Road South, Elgin, IV30 6NG- T: 01343 552 222 www.cascadeblinds.co.uk

Countdown is on for piping extravaganza Moray is gearing up for its biggest one day event which takes place next month and attracts visitors from all over the world. Piping At Forres, the European Pipe Band Championships will take place on June 24 in Grant Park. Now in its fifth year, Piping At Forres, sponsored by Benromach Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, not only includes world class piping and drumming, Highland dancing and the World Tattie Scone Championships, but also includes a food and drink village, a craft and retail village, bars and family attractions such as funfairs. Visitors can even try their hand at the pipes and drums themselves. New attractions at this year’s event will include an interactive science tent and reenactors to tell visitors more about the history and heritage of Forres and the surrounding area. Alan James, chairman of Forres Events Limited, the company which organises Piping At Forres said: “Piping At Forres is now a firm fixture on the piping calendar and also a key date in the diary for locals and tourists alike, who come and spend the whole day in Grant Park, soaking up the atmosphere of the piping whilst enjoying all of the other attractions such as the craft village, food and drink stalls, the funfair and the many interactive attractions that make it a great family day out.” He added: “Since the first Piping At Forres in 2013, the event has grown and each year there is something new. This year we are delighted to be part of Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology and the park will be cast back in time when reenactors from various historical periods descend on the arena. We have also commissioned a historical walking app which will not only get people moving around Grant Park and learning about its history, but also get people out into the town itself, creating a real carnival feel not just in the park, but throughout the whole of Forres.” Major General Seymour Monro, who will act as this year’s Chieftain, also spoke at the ticket launch event. He said: “I am really delighted to have been invited to act as Chieftain for this year’s European Pipe Band Championships. It is a spectacular event which has put not only Forres but Moray on the map. From across the world, pipers and drummers travel to Forres to take part. The people of Forres and the organisers of Piping at Forres are now renowned for putting on a fantastic show. As a local man, it is a real honour to be able to support this superb event and the launch party has kicked that off very nicely.” Last year, Piping at Forres drummed up over £1 million for the local economy and was shortlisted for the Best Cultural Event or Festival award in the 2016 Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards. The contest which saw nominations coming in from as far afield as Canada also ties in with Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology. Piping At Forres is being supported by EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Red Thread (Yellow Be Aware Warning) ! We often have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed. Clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.

If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year.

I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season. You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society)..

For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. THE DROUTHY COBBLER

It’s been a busy month starting with the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, which saw thousands of visitors arrive in Speyside to experience over 500 whisky themed events. We now head into the Summer with some of the best music & comedy from around the country, performing live at The Drouthy Cobbler. For music fans, the month starts off with Douglas MacGregor & Toby Hay on the 1st. Two extremely talented guitar players, they each play a different style of music. Douglas’ influences come from all over the world and include blues, folk, jazz and classical, whilst Toby is a more traditional folk musician, yet still influenced by world music, as well as that of his native Wales. On the 8th, acclaimed folk singer Jenny Sturgeon will be performing songs from her impressive debut album, ‘From The Skein’. Her traditional Scottish music and lyrics inspired by folklore, historical events and personal experience, have received rave reviews from around the country. Chris Sesar & Gill Halliday (11th) are a pair of up and coming singer song-writers, blending Celtic folk and roots & country music with a brush of gypsy jazz. This will be an excellent night of songs with some of the best harmonies around. For those looking for something a little louder, Twin Heart and The Belafonte will be performing on the 16th. Kilmarnock’s Twin Heart will kick things off in phenomenal style with their intoxicating brand of alternative rock. More alt-rock from Ayrshire trio The Belafonte will top the bill. The monthly Comedy Club (28th) will once again feature the best in Scottish comedy, featuring a variety of styles and acts. And with the Edinburgh Fringe fast approaching, there will be some preview shows, for comedians to hone their act before stepping on stage at one of the world’s biggest comedy festivals. The first of these is on the 4th of June when Liam Withnail & Gareth Waugh will be performing their shows ‘The Immigration Game’, about discovering the true cost of love in the United Kingdom; and ‘Honestly?’, a show all about lying and honesty. One mic must be the truth and the other only lies... but can you tell which is which? Tickets for all of these events are available at The Drouthy Cobbler and at www.thedrouthycobbler.co.uk Please be aware that while live comedy can often be hilarious, it is also highly subjective and some material might not be to your tastes!

Moray Walking & Outdoor Festival’s main speaker this year is Steve Bate MBE. As the first visually impaired climber to solo El Capitan, a sheer face in Yosemite National Park, and double gold Paralympian cyclist, Steve comes back to his old stomping ground to give an insight to his past challenges, future adventures and what inspires him.

Words by the Wayside "Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ the Son of God, which should come into the world." (John 11:27)

Reader, no human life has been untouched by sin. All need a Saviour and there is only one, not many. There is one mediator between God and men: the man Christ Jesus. To know Him as your Saviour will take the terror away from the grave. To know Him is life eternal. The Lord Jesus is a Saviour, a Deliverer and a Guide. Do you know Him? Do you believe on Him? Will you not come to Him? www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

"Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge". (Proverbs 19:27)

Christian, God's Word must control our lives, not the opinions of those around about us. We are to keep ourselves pure and be not partakers of other people's sins. We are to refuse vain babblings and this world's wisdom, which professes itself to be wise but is in fact foolish and the opposite of Godly knowledge. If you do not promote truth, you will promote error. If you do not defend truth you will defend error. This month we are making a....

You will need.. 1. Pot 2. Glass Bowl

Tea Cup Candle!

Method Fill your tea cup twice with the candle wax flakes and place into a heat proof bowl. Next fill your pot halfway with water and bring to the boil, place your heat proof bowl into the pot of boiling water and wait for the was to completely melt, keep it on a medium heat!, once melted remove the glass bowl and let it cool.

4. Fragrance Oils

While the wax is melting you can get your tea cup ready!, Place your candle wick in the centre and hold in place with the wooden utensils, Handy tip: you can tape down your untensils to keep the candle wick firmly in place.

5.Candle Wax Flakes (or an old candle to melt down)

Before cooling, pour in your fragrance into the wax using manufacturer’s guide or 2 tablespoons, BEWARE: avoid over-stirring your wax when you add the fragrance, Lightly stir 10 times in one direction and 10 times in the other, over-stirring can cause cracks in the wax once it sets!

6. Candle Wicks

Once cool, slowly pour in the wax keeping the candle wick in the centre, careful not to move your cup after pouring! Now wait 24 hours for the wax to fully set.

3. Wooden Utensils

7. Pretty Tea cup

When your wax has set, trim the wick, light up your candle and enjoy! This can be made as a lovley gift or a fun DIY to try at home!

Recipe

Chef’s Confidential

Butternut squash & chilli soup, Gluten free and vegan A warming and healthy soup that can be enjoyed as a light lunch or a hearty dinner. All of us here at Spotlight thoroughly enjoyed this soup from The Peppermill recently. This month’s recipe is supplied by The Peppermill Restaurant in Forres. Ingredients: 1 clove garlic Large knob of ginger 2-3 mild red chillies 2 butternut squash 2 white onions pinch cracked black pepper sea salt litre of vegetable stock Method: Prepare the vegetables by peeling and roughly chopping the garlic clove, butternut squash and onions. Peel the ginger knob by using a tea spoon to scrape the skin off (this minimises the amount of ginger lost) and again roughly chop. Roast the butternut squash for about 30-40 minutes in a hot oven or until tender. Sautee the onions and garlic gently over a low heat taking care not to let it burn. Add the chilli and ginger and cook for a few minutes, then add the butternut squash, stock and seasoning. Simmer on a medium heat for 10 minutes and blend until smooth. If too thick, add a little extra hot water and season accordingly.
