I’m feeling a bit grumpy lately. I wonder if I can lay the blame at the door of BREXIT. Am I the only one who would just wish we could get it done and move on? It seems an age since we voted and true to form it looks like the politicians and “experts” can’t even agree on what we voted for. I suppose we shouldn’t be too surprised. How often do politicians use one word when twenty will suffice!? Even though I voted remain I accepted the final decision and along with many people, I guess, would just like us to get on with it. Let us hope for common sense to prevail over party politics!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings It’s that time of the year when all the big supermarkets are selling BBQs at full price, in the hope that summer will be warm and dry, you’ve got to love that optimism. If you’re wanting to buy one wait a couple of months and they may be dirt cheap. Whenever I see BBQ charcoal burning it always makes me think of a passage in Isaiah. Isaiah walks into the Temple and gets the shock of his life, expecting to meet with God- he goes in and is given a vision of the edge of God’s garment filling the Temple. Of Seraphim- strange heavenly creatures, who are without sin and yet cover their faces with their wings for fear of The God they serve, crying Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of Hosts, the whole earth is filled with His glory’ (Isaiah 6 v 3). Indeed of all the attributes of God, His holiness is the only one that is stressed in triplicate. Isaiah who we know is a religious man, why else would he be in the Temple at this sight, of this Holy, Holy, Holy God, sees himself as he truly is and is undone. ‘Woe is me’ he cries! You see he knows full well now that he is a sinner, ‘a man of unclean lips, who dwells among a people of unclean lips’. Maybe prior to this encounter he saw himself as moral, upright and worthy, there was none of that now. I don’t know if you have ever thought what it would be like to meet with God face to face? If you have I suspect you haven’t considered that your first words would be ‘woe is me’. It seems
pretty hopeless Isaiah is confronted with the holiness of God and sees his own sinfulness and he feels his utter hopelessness. The late D. James Kennedy a Presbyterian minister in Florida, USA once said, ‘God is holy and we are not if that were all there was to the problem, there would be no problem God would send us into hell. At this stage Isaiah woefully aware of his own sinfulness, hopeless, unravelled and probably wanting the ground to cover him, yet there is hope, because there is then this astounding verse, one of the Seraphim ‘flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar’ v6 and Isaiah is cleansed, and his sin atoned for. I don’t now how much you know about altars, but the Old Testament is full of them, they speak of sacrifice, they are missing in the New Testament. This is a picture of the LORD Jesus Christ, the very reason there are no altars in the New Testament is because of Jesus, the Christ became He became the sacrifice, the ‘lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world’ as John the Baptist described Him. It’s one of the things I love about the Good News of Christianity. When confronted with our sinfulness and aware that God is Holy, we can know our sin demands to be punished, that isn’t a big surprise, the surprise in the Gospel is who bears the punishment. While all the world

religions says do this, or do that. The Gospel says that you cannot do it, nothing we could do can give us an open heaven. But it also says it’s done Christ, the beloved Son of the Father, dies in our places. Jonathan Edwards said the only thing we contribute to salvation ‘is our sin that made it necessary’. The prophet Isaiah much later in his book goes on to say of the Christ who would one day come that he would ‘take up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, be ‘pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him’. (Isaiah 53 verses 4 and 5) I am thankful there is as Richard Sibbes the English Purtian said, ‘more mercy in Christ than there is sin in us’ or as Tim Keller often says, ‘We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope’.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times We should rejoice at our growing and ageing population. I am sure I’m not alone in wishing to benefit from a long and healthy life. The medical advances which have ensured that former life changing conditions are dealt with as a matter of routine are continually being enhanced. The Highlands now has a growing population. Many of our young folk no longer leave the area for higher education whilst the new jobs mean an increased tax base to fund services. It’s vital our older folk are supported to live in their own homes for as long as they safely can be. How we respond to their growing needs will ultimately mark out the sort of caring society we really are.

I am already doing a lot to help farmers and crofters cope with the impacts of recent adverse weather. The LFASS and BPS loan schemes helped cash flow over the winter and Spring, with farmers and crofters getting 90% of entitlements earlier than normal. The first CAP payments of the final 10% of basic and greening payments have now landed in bank accounts and the first payments under the beef scheme are expected to be made in the first week of May. But I’ve also announced a package of support to address three key weather-related issues. First, £250,000 is being provided to help offset some of the additional costs of dealing with fallen livestock. This will be operated through the National Fallen Stock Company in a similar way to the 2013 scheme and details of the payment process are currently being finalised. Second, the current pressures on feed and fodder will soon become autumn problems, due to poor winter and Spring sowing conditions. I am meeting industry and stakeholder reps to explore what more can be done to reduce shortages, increase resilience and create collaborative solutions. Finally, I recognise that the harsh weather and long working hours is taking its toll on people’s wellbeing. So I am also providing RSABI with funding to help them offer more practical and emotional support to farmers and their families. We will always have weather to cope with in Scotland – and we’ll be better able to cope with the impacts of the winter weather just past, as well as those from the farming year ahead if we all work together.

As we know, tourism is crucial to the Highlands representing a fifth of our economy and the growth of direct flights from Inverness airport has delivered record breaking passenger numbers and visitors. Visitors are drawn by many of our local delights; from snow sports in the Cairngorms, golfing in Nairn or Castle Stuart, to taking a Jacobite cruise along Loch Ness. There are exciting plans for Inverness Castle and the launch of a truly world leading Augmented reality app which will put Inverness’ history into the palms of visitor’s hands. The global smash TV series, Outlander can count me as a fan has created a new wave of interest in the area. The Culloden visitor centre and the Highland Folk Museum bring history to life, delighting and educating visitors from across the globe. As our tourism sector goes from strength to strength, we must all work hard to secure our reputation as a quality destination and I will continue to champion our area at every opportunity.

Words by the Wayside “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above‌â€? (Colossians 3:1)
Christian, set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. We are not to be the same as those who know not the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour - we are to be different. We are ambassadors for Him and we are to walk worthy of Him. Holiness is not an option for us but a commandment and an absolute necessity in life. We are to glorify God in our bodies and in our spirits, always looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

Create and store your own solar energy The Tesla Energy Powerwall 2 stores up to 13.5 kWh of excess solar energy during daylight hours when your home electricity usage is low, then discharges in the evening during those high usage/peak times saving you money. The Powerwall can be installed with new Solar PV systems or can be retrofitted to existing PV systems. A home battery system protects homeowners from future electricity price increases and reduce reliance on the national grid. About AES Solar Established in 1979, AES Solar is the oldest solar company in Western Europe and has completed solar thermal and PV installations all over the world. We proudly manufacture our range of solar thermal panels in Forres and our aim is to make Scotland the solar capital of the world.

SpotLIGHT Garden
Brought to you by:
Red Thread (Yellow Be Aware Warning)! We often have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed. Clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.
If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year. I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season.
You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society).

Adult Fiction
Greeks Bearing Gifts
Adult Fiction Circe By Madeline Miller
By Philip Kerr 1957, Munich. Bernie Gunther's latest move in a long string of varied careers sees him working for an insurance company. Sent to Athens to investigate a claim from a fellow German for a ship that has sunk, Bernie takes an instant dislike to the claimant. Then the claimant is found dead, shot through both eyes. It's a win for Bernie's employers at least: no one to pay out to even if the claim is genuine. But who is behind the murder, and why?
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is scorned and rejected by her kin. Increasingly isolated, she turns to mortals for companionship, leading her to discover a power forbidden to the gods: witchcraft. Circe's independence draws the wrath of men and gods alike and she must decide whether she belongs with the deities she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

Adult Non-Fiction The Templars By Dan Jones The Knights Templar were the wealthiest, most powerful - and most secretive - of the military orders that flourished in the crusading era. Their story - a network of international finance, a swift rise in wealth and influence followed by a bloody and humiliating fall - has left a comet's tail of mystery that continues to fascinate and inspire historians, novelists and conspiracy theorists.

The Midnight Gang
By Louise O’Neill
By David Walliams
Hans Christian Andersen's original fairy tale is reimagined through a searing feminist lens. Deep beneath the sea, off the cold Irish coast, Gaia is a young mermaid who dreams of freedom from her controlling father. On her first swim to the surface, she is drawn towards a human boy. She longs to join his carefree world, but how much will she have to sacrifice?
Welcome to the Midnight Gang! Midnight is the time when all children are fast asleep, except of course for...the Midnight Gang. That is when their adventures are just beginning... Heartwarming and, of course, funny story of five children on a hospital ward - and on a quest for adventure! It is a story of friendship and magic - and of making dreams come true.

une is the month when things really start motoring in the garden. With overnight temperatures that bit higher, plus a bit of sun and rain, the plants are really are in their element. If you find that you have lost plants over the winter, do not be disheartened, it has happened to all of us – it was a tough winter! Don’t be in too much of a rush to pull things out of the ground though, there is still hope for more established shrubs that have not managed to get through the winter. For plants such as Hebe spp, many of which are only borderline happy in our climate, try hard pruning those that look to have died. When I say hard pruning, I mean cut them back down to the ground! While doing this, you may even notice that the plant is regenerating from its rootstock, with little buds bursting forth. If after a few more weeks you notice nothing, then you may have to concede that the plant has died, but you’ll be amazed at how often the plants come back! For those of you who battle with a mossy or weedy lawn, there are some useful things you can be doing at the moment. Early spring is a good time for scarifying grass, basically raking some of the moss out. With the late start to

the season this year, you still have time to do this. For small areas you can do this with a wire rake, and for larger areas you will be better off hiring a machine. With the grass growing properly now, I also put down a lawn feed. A little trick here though – conventional spring or summer feeds contain large amounts of nitrogen and simply make your grass grow extremely quickly. I use an autumn feed, which has all the same nutrients, but less nitrogen. The result is nice healthy grass that is not growing at a rate of knots! I have also put a load of well-rotted horse manure down on my flowerbeds. You can also use well-rotted cow or chicken manure. You can judge whether your manure is well-rotted enough quite easily – it should not smell bad! Now anything like this is full of nitrogen, so will make your plants take off (just as lawn fertiliser does to the ‘leaves’ of grass plants). Now is the time to do this, however, as if you put down nitrogen-rich feeds on your plants later in the summer, you may end up simply creating lush foliage growth that then gets hammered by the next early frosts. But let’s not start talking about frosts yet! With a bit of luck we’ll get some nice weather this summer, and we can all reap the benefits of our hard work gardening by spending some quality time relaxing in the garden. Let’s not miss an opportunity to get the barbecue out!
Till next time, happy mountain gardening!
