I read recently that Dolphins are really smart. They’re certainly quite cute but I wonder if they could beat the vocabulary of our old dog that died recently. She was a Bordie Collie and we worked out that she could recognise and respond to about 400 words (names, objects and activities). She could even recall names from 10 years previous. I’ve never had a pet dolphin but I bet they couldn’t beat that unless you know different!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT God was in the process of creating the universe and he was explaining to his angels – “Everything should be in balance. For instance, for every 10 deer there should be a lion. See, here is the country of the United States. I have blessed them with prosperity and money. But at the same time I have given them insecurity and tension... And here is Africa. I have given them beautiful nature. But at the same time, I have given them climatic extremes... And here is South America. I have given them lots of forests. But at the same time, I have given them lesser land so that they would have to cut down the forests... So you see, everything should be in balance.” One of the angels asked... “Lord, what is this beautiful country here?” God said “Aha... that is the crown piece of all - SCOTLAND, my most precious creation. It has understanding and friendly people, sparkling streams, rolling hills, serene mountains, a culture which speaks of the great tradition that they live, technological resources and with a heart of gold”. The angel was quite

surprised “But Lord, you said everything should be in balance.” God replied, “Yes - look at the neighbours I gave them!!” Balance is an important subject, whether it is about weights and measures, or about getting things even in our lives. We are aware of the perils of those who do not balance their time spent at work and with the family; or of youngsters who spend too much time in front of the television or computer, when they should be studying etc. Many of us are seriously over-weight because we haven’t got the balance right between the food we eat and the exercise we take. Achieving a balanced Christian life is as hard for the individual as it is for the church. We can get so involved with church meetings we lose the ability to be ‘normal’ with our non-Christian neighbours. We need to balance our prayer life with our acts of service, or to read the Bible as much as we read other books etc. It is easy to get the balance wrong. Life is rather like sailing, continually having to adjust things as you sail along - “course correction”. There are some things, of course, that we can’t balance. There are many

people who try to balance their lessthan-perfect life by doing ‘good deeds’, as if there was some kind of giant scales. The sad news is that there is nothing we can do to out-weigh our faults - God is holy -absolutely perfect. St Paul says, “Everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glorious standard...” Romans 3:23 (New Century Version). But there is good news, for God loves humankind so much he ‘tips the scales’ in our favour. St Paul he goes on to say, “... all need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift. They need to be made free from sin through Jesus Christ. God sent him to die in our place to take away our sins. We receive forgiveness through faith in the blood of Jesus’ death.” You may feel your life is right ‘out of balance’. Maybe you need to take a first step, rather than trying to get yourself perfect first (impossible anyway!). Jesus Christ is just a step away from you right now. Tell him you want to get your life right with God and ask him to help you get the balance right. Rev. Alan Price St Mary-in-the-Fields, Inverness

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES As we approach the 2014 Commonwealth Games I’m reminded of the huge success of Scottish and UK summer and winter Olympians and Paralympians in recent years. Glasgow will be welcoming 6,500 athletes representing 70 nations to Scotland this summer. It will be a great opportunity to promote the best Scotland has to offer, and present Scotland and the Highlands to the world. We may not always have the best sporting weather here in the Highlands, but we have always been able to produce more than our fair share of sports stars competing on the world stage. No doubt a mix of fresh air and strong support for our local champions. On Friday 11th July I, like many, will be welcoming the Queen’s Baton to the Highlands and I’m a greatly looking forward to what I’m sure will be another sporting success for Scotland. The best of luck to everyone taking part

Not many politicians are known simply by their Christian names. Margo was, however, one. This month the celebration of her life was held in the General Assembly Building and tributes were made by my friend and colleague Alex Neil, actress Elaine C Smith and Margo’s husband, Jim Sillars. He said that Margo had a heart as big as Arthurs Seat and the Proclaimers sang Sunshine on Leith. Another person known in politics by his first name is Dennis (Canavan) He and I spoke at independence meetings in Nairn and Inverness. He is a strong speaker and a fine character whose commitment to social justice shone through. He said that hope will triumph against fear - and that was also a view Margo espoused. This month I am travelling to Houston to attend the OTC - the biggest oil and gas trade conference in the world. Last year and the year before I attended and met with many companies who have since enhanced their presence in Scotland with the creation of thousands of jobs. This time we also have a great story to tell with the industry expanding furth of Aberdeen - including the North. I hope the positive news will continue.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Red Thread Fungal Disease It’s too early to say yet whether or not this summer will be mild and wet. Our winter and spring were certainly almost unbelievably mild. The main problem we look for on lawns at this time of year is Red Thread fungal disease. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is indeed mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed, clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in early June.

If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year. I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season.

16

Don’t forget though, if we have dry spells during the summer, you need to water the grass just like any other plant. An hour with a sprinkler in the evening is best to ensure you don’t lose much of the benefit from evaporation during the day. Often people think you don’t need to water the garden in Scotland, but you do, especially around the drier parts of our area along the Moray Coast.

Pack your case and holiday in the USA The States has never been at the top of my ‘wish list’ but after my 3 week trip to the West coast I can’t wait to return! I split my time between San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, with a journey through Yosemite National Park and Death Valley. San Francisco was my favourite, I pre-booked most of my excursions before I travelled to make the most of my 4 nights in the city. A highlight was Alcatraz, located on an island off San Francisco. It was used as a federal prison between 1933 and 1963 and housed such in-mates as Al Capone. Instead of the usual flight between San Francisco and Vegas I decided to take a 1 night, 2 day trip through Yosemite National Park and Death Valley. Seeing the vast comparison between the green, lush National Park with Yosemite falls, the fourth tallest waterfall in the world in full flow (May is the best time to see this) and the barren emptiness of Death Valley was amazing.

Wonders on the world, the Grand Canyon is a must. Excursion options are endless, we chose the ‘sunset helicopter tour’ landing in the canyon for a glass of champagne to view the sunset before flying home over The Strip. My last stop was Los Angeles, ‘The City of Angels’ we split our time between Beverly Hills for shopping and celeb spotting and Santa Monica for the beach and surf. A tour of Los Angeles is recommended to see all parts of the city – from Venice Beach, or Muscle Beach as it is perhaps better know to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Sunset Strip. A day spent at Universal Studios for the launch of the new attraction ‘Transformers 3D’ was well worth the hour trip from Beverly Hills. Santa Monica was the perfect way to finish off what was a busy 3 weeks.

Vegas is like nothing I have ever seen before! The Strip really comes to life at night with the fountain show at the Bellagio Hotel and an erupting volcano at the Mirage Hotel. A trip to one of the Information kindly supplied by

Time for a celebration! Winner: Dentist of the Year - Bert Hay I Shortlisted: Practice of the year - Inspire Dental fo Ope ur n la 7 d te ev ays en a w in e gs ek M an on d -T hu

IT’S BEEN A TIME TO CELEBRATE FOR INSPIRE DENTAL. After being shortlisted for the Scottish Dental Awards 2014, the event held in Glasgow on the 9th May, was a huge success. Our team was delighted that Inspire Dental reached the final four for the Practice of the Year award. However, the night was made when our dentist, Bert Hay, won the title of Dentist of the Year.

Bert Hay and the Inspire team celebrate

Delighted with the highly sought after award, Bert said "I am very honoured to have been presented with this award and overwhelmed with the positive backing we've had locally. All I can say is that I could not have won without the support I've had from all the Inspire team and our patients. So to them I am truly grateful. This follows on from our Implant Dentist, Chris Barrowman, winning Best Young Dentist in Scotland at the UK Dentistry Awards 2013 presented last December in Leicester.
