Words by the Wayside “Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is...” (John 9:30)
Reader, Jesus Christ is God. Your life does not consist in the things that you possess but rather in the knowledge and forgiveness of your sin found in God’s Son Jesus Christ; He alone is faithful and just and able to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. “Why seek ye the living among the dead?”. The Lord Jesus Christ is not a dead moral teacher from two thousand years ago, but a real living-today Saviour. In Him is Life eternal, Do you know Him as your Saviour? He is before you today. www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Hope
First of all let me express my apologies to you for starting this letter in rather a gloomy way but I do promise that it will end far better. You see, as I listen to the news, there does not seem to be any hope. Internationally things seem rather difficult with hostages being taken and huge ransom demands being made. The brutal scenes that we have witnessed in France, Belgium, Australia and no doubt other places between the time of writing this letter and it being printed are horrendous and I could go on but that’s enough to make the point. At home we are told that the health service is collapsing and what may happen at the next general election is better not talked about. Then I take the dog for a walk or to be more accurate, a dawdle, she’s thirteen now and some of the zeal of her younger years has disappeared, we take a walk around a local garden and although it’s still only the end of January I notice some snowdrops pushing their way through the earth and flowering nicely and I think to
myself that whatever may be happening as far as humanity is concerned, with God it’s business as usual, hope begins to rise that soon daffodils, tulips, crocuses and host of other flowers will be bursting in to life and the smell of spring will fill the air. It was David the psalmist who wrote ‘ Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God’ (Psalm 42:5) It would appear that King David had international and national problems three thousand years ago (so perhaps nothing changed) but he also had the answer, he would put his hope in God and as a result he became one of the great kings of Israel, and there’s more, a thousand years later one of King David’s descendants would be Jesus Christ who God the Father destined to bring hope to the world internationally, nationally and hope for every individual. This hope that Jesus brings is not just for time and life here on planet earth but it is also for eternity. Let’s cast our minds forward just a few

weeks and we will be celebrating Easter, the fact that on Good Friday Jesus was crucified but on Easter Sunday morning He rose from the grave, the purpose of this great event— to bring hope to every human being. You see our biggest problem is not a terrorist fighting force or the possible collapse of the health service, serious as these matters are, our great problem is that of sin, disobedience to God with it’s resulting penalty, death itself. When Jesus died He dealt with sin and the penalty of it for us, in His resurrection He proved that new life was available to each one who believes in Him. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23) Back to the snowdrops proving that after the death of winter resurrection life is a fact. Are you downcast or disturbed then be like King David and put your hope in God, He will not disappoint you. David Williams Inverness Christian Fellowship

Don’t be scared With a hint of spring in the air..... (ish) and the days slowly getting longer.....(ish) you may be now thinking about dusting off the bike and getting some miles done. For the battle hardened cyclist this probably isn't the case as the bike never sits still long enough to gather dust! I went out for the first time since new year just last week, work and family commitments have seen me busy for most of January, with no time for biking :( and was struck by the difference in conditions from only a month previous. The trails are, dare I say, almost dry, and the temperature meant just a base layer and light windproof jacket were needed! Amazing, it was like spring! Dont count your chickens too soon I hear you say.....
‘winter may still have a fair sting in its tale yet!’ and you’re probably right. When spring arrives I will be ready, I don’t want to miss a moment, I’ve got my bike sorted out and tuned to the max with fresh disc pads and serviced suspension, I’ve got my kit all ready too. A new pair of shorts to go with my super grippy 5.10 shoes. Maybe I'll treat myself to a new camelback too. With a good local bike shop you can get all the right advice from people who are just as enthusiastic as you are, who, when the first day with a temperature above freezing arrives, are convinced it’s springtime! Somewhere like monsterbike on Canal Road Inverness ( by the Muirtown lock gates ) where you can get everything you need.

In the last few weeks, the world has been remembering the horrific events that happened only seventy years ago in Auschwitz - Birkenau. “Keep the memory alive” has been this year’s slogan for the anniversary of the Holocaust as we remember the 11 million people who were murdered in Nazi death camps. Having visited Auschwitz in 2007 with five Highland schools, it is all the more poignant for me. It is hard to forget walking through the gate marked “Arbeit macht frei” work will set you free - and the gruesome eeriness of the camp. But that is the point - we shouldn’t forget. The devastation caused to families and communities in the largest mass murder in history is unimaginable. It must be remembered and I’m proud of British schools for educating our children about those horrendous events. I urge everyone to spare a thought for those who died and challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today.
Older Spotlight readers may remember the Ad: "Any time, any place , anywhere - its Martini!" That's the approach of the UK Government to mining of unconventional gas and oil - or fracking as it is better known. Last July the Tory Lib Dem coalition decreed that people's right to object to fracking beneath their homes was to be confiscated - without any consultation with Scotland. After pressure from the Scottish Government , the whole issue is to be transferred to the Scottish Parliament by 2016. Meantime as Energy Minister I have announced a moratorium on onshore activity, as well as detailed studies into impacts on environment, public health and traffic.’ There will now be a full consultation in Scotland and decisions will then be made here, not in London by a regime gung-ho on fracking.

This Month... A profile on
Forres Mechanics Forres Mechanics are the oldest team in the Highland League, founded in 1884. The name "Mechanics" arose from the occupations of the founder members "people who are employed in manual occupations and in handicrafts".
The "Mechanics" have enjoyed success over the years, having won the League title twice and, at one time or another, all of the Highland League knockout competitions.
Their current home "Mosset Park" is sited on Forres Common Good Ground, granted by Royal Charter to the people of Forres by James 1st and used as rough grazing ground. Forres Town Council, in 1884, allowed the football club access to create a pitch and charged a "peppercorn rent" which remained unaltered until the very recent past. At the time of Local Government reorganization in the 1970's, custodianship of the Common Good area was transferred to Moray Council and this arrangement persists today.
Currently, the biggest challenge is how to deal with the proposed Redco Milne development at Bogton Rd. which would necessitate moving from the Mosset Park, which is arguably the best Ground in the Highland League.
FOOTBALL CLUB Elgin City
Is the proposal a threat or an opportunity for the town and the football club? As custodians of the area in question, Moray Council are obliged to consult the people again. The power of the football club as mere leaseholders rather than owners, to influence the outcome is limited but the consequences of the decision are big. Uncertain times indeed for a Club with a long, proud history!

The projects which the shops have supported are very diverse and very worthwhile. From sending a group of mum’s and children from Ross-shires Woman’s Aid in Dingwall; to the pantomime at Eden Court Theatre, for the past two years; supporting a group from Invergordon with Mental Health problems to stage a play in Inverness; Disabled ramblers with the cost of transport to their venues over the summer; Providing I-Pads for projects for the elderly; Visually impaired group to visit the Scottish Parliament, or grass cutting equipment for the local Handy man project. Last year we were the first funders and main supporters of the Inverness Men’s Shed paying their first years rent, enabling them to get the “Shed” up and running. This project has been so successful that it now has 77 members and is open 5 days a week. This week we donated £ 1500 to the newly formed committee for the Beauly Men’s Shed to enable it too to get started. The team at Caring & Sharing realised from the beginning that Men’s Sheds would play a very important part in our local community. A survey carried out when we opened in 2010 suggested that the most socially isolated people in our community were men over 55 and one of the ways to address this could be with a Shed as they had been so successful in other parts of the world. When Alan Michael finally found a suitable property it seemed natural for us to support it . There are now Men’s sheds popping up all over the Highlands which will benefit their communities greatly. For more information on donating goods to sell in our shops or about our free collection service in Inverness, volunteering, or how to go about getting a grant form, please telephone Izzie MacDonald on 01463 226404 or call into the shop for a chat.

The Caring & Sharing Charity Shop opened at 68 Church Street , Inverness in April 2010 and has successfully traded there for almost 5 years supporting local charity groups in Inverness, Ross- shire and Nairn enabling them to do things with their groups that they might otherwise have thought impossible due to lack of funding. The shop was set up by Izzie MacDonald who has many years experience of setting up and running charity shops for several charities throughout the UK. The volunteer team take great pleasure in being able to support their local community, something that Izzie ultimately always planned to do . Twenty four local charities have benefited from grants between £500 and £1000 in Highland Region, which the team are delighted to support as long as their request meets their criteria. On the 29th of January 2015 the shop at 68 Church Street closed and moved across the street to 87 Church Street as the lease on the shop had expired. The Caring & Sharing shop is known locally as the “posh” charity shop and is renowned for the quality, range and presentation of it’s stock. The second Caring & Sharing Charity shop opened in Invergordon in January 2012 and has proved very popular with the community in that area.
