Without wishing to tempt The Editor fate, it does appear that Summer has indeed arrived. Flowers bloom, blossom buds, vegetables spring forth. New life abounds and, with it - new hope. We live in hope; that people will understand responsibility and not just rights; that people will express restraint and not just outrage; that people will choose to give others the benefit of the doubt rather than to jump to conclusions; that we will focus on wisdom and not just intelligence and that we will turn to joy rather than just happiness. And when we can’t find the strength to do these things let us have friends that encourage us to anyway.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Highs and lows On Sunday 13th March, Ross County FC entered through the gates of Hampden Park and, going on to win the match - the Scottish Cup Final - claimed the victory and the trophy. The fans were jubilant, waving their scarves and flags. The following Saturday, they lost their match to a side hovering above the relegation zone and the cheers of the fans were silenced. Highs and lows. It is the nature of life that we encounter both. Yet, it often seems that in the lows, there is a readiness to accuse God with “Why is he doing this to me?” while in the highs, God is not mentioned - there is no sense of gratitude. As I write this, I find myself in the middle of Holy Week. Having heard on Palm Sunday the story of Jesus’ triumphant entry through the gates of Jerusalem, with people throwing their cloaks and palm branches on the road in front of him, and shouting “Hosanna!” (Mark 11:1-10), I know that in a couple of days I will be hearing the story of Jesus’ trial and the shouts of the crowd changing to

“Crucify him!” (Mark 15:6-15). Highs and lows, indeed. It is a story of betrayal, denial, and desertion by those close to him, and hatred from those who fear him. But that is not the end of the story. From the Cross, Jesus offers forgiveness to his executioners (“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:35), and loving care to his family and friends (He said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” and to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own home. John 19:26, 27). But, of course, his death is not the end. Easter brings the account of the empty tomb, and the news of resurrection. Whatever that experience must have been for the disciples, it was something which gave them the confidence and conviction to speak about it, and their conviction was so strong that people believed them. God had entered into the highs and lows of human existence in the person of

Jesus of Nazareth who through his life and death and resurrection made real his claim “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” (John 14:6). We know the end of his story, the real triumph of Christ whose way is to pass not just through the gates of Jerusalem, but through the gate of death and the gate of new life. It is the way which Jesus calls His disciples to follow; and not merely to reach His Kingdom at some time beyond the grave. It is to work for His Kingdom in the here and now; to accept the offer of new life in the present moment; to reflect His love and His glory in the world in which we live. It is to show others the way of hope and promise that sustains us, and the presence of God who rejoices and weeps with us, through the highs and lows of our lives - to the end of our story.

GreenThumb

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Who Are GreenThumb in These Parts ? I’ve been giving Spotlight readers my insights into lawn issues as they present to us each month, for a few years now. I hope they are useful. Although we add around 200 new customers locally each year, I am still amazed how many folk out there have never heard of us. It’s not as if our vans are inconspicuous. Head Office in Wales put lots of ads/articles in the national gardening magazines, they even sponsored pitchside advertising at the last Wales vs Scotland rugby six nations match, watched by millions on the Beeb! Many of you do already know us. But for those who don’t, perhaps I should do some introductions. There’s Fiona and me (both ex-NHS, long time ago now), trying to keep the show on the road from our office and yard at Croft House outside Nairn. Actually out on the road servicing lawns are Dave, ex RAF (Inverness & Black Isle) and Doug, ex-army (Moray Coast). We’re all over 21! We also take on seasonal help in the autumn/winter to tackle scarifying out moss. We’ve been running this franchise for 10 years now. Head Office seem to think we are a good outfit as we were UK Franchise of the Year Runner Up 2 years ago, and have more or less permanent residence in their top 10. I tell them it’s because we have good customers! Now the mowing season is upon us, the best advice you will hear from anyone is don’t cut the grass shorter than 1”. In our climate, scalping grass is the quickest way to get a moss infestation!

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES Finally! It's finished! Not my political campaigning, but the bookshelves I've been building over the last few weeks! There's been some trial and error and some mildly frustrated grumbling on occasions but to have them up and holding books and even, if I do say so myself, looking pretty good is really satisfying. DIY in the house has usually been something that has been a necessity but on this occasion it was more of a planned project and something I found quite relaxing and completely different from day-to-day work. It's not everyone's cup of tea but I'd recommend giving it a go. While that has been going the puppy has grown quite substantially in the last few months and she's now at the stage of persistently chewing her sister's ears. The older one seems to have the patience for the puppy though and walking them both around Moray is a great way to see the countryside. Angus Robertson MP

It was back in the summer of 2014, that I first raised the idea of a £300m City Deal for Inverness. It has been quite a journey since then. I recall thinking, if Glasgow can get a deal then why not us? Surely, Europe's fastest growing city should too, have transformational investment that allows us to plan for growth, not just react as has been the case in the past. The deal is made up of £135M from the Scottish Government, £127M of Highland Council capital funding and £53m from the UK Government. This investment will ensure that Inverness and region benefit from improved infrastructure, connectivity, jobs and housing. It will also be fantastic to see our ambition for Inverness Castle realised. There are many projects that divide opinion but seeing the castle open for business will, I know, please many of the people who live and work in Inverness and across the wider region. Drew Hendry MP

THE The Burning Hell, Thurs 19th May

Once again The Drouthy Cobbler is heavily involved in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival both as a venue and as the festival information point in Elgin. A highlight of the weekend will undoubtedly be the seven course tasting dinner with whisky paired and introduced by whisky legend Charles MacLean. Saturday the 30th of April will see the staging of “Donald Robertson is not a stand up comedian” which grew out of the National Theatre of Scotland's Auteurs project. This theatre piece is a darkly comic coming of age story that explores the need to belong and deconstructs the brutal role that humour can play in society. ‘As a blend of jokes and theatre, it works beautifully, and McNair delivers real insight along with the laughs. A gem of a show.’ The Telegraph There is music with Sunday lunchtime Jazz and on Thursday 28th April a hotly anticipated return visit from McKerron, Brechin, and Ó hEadhra. We also have two cocktail sessions with the author Ruth Ball and a tutored tasting of Gordon & Macphail's Connoisseurs Choice range.

Glenn Wool Comedian, Thurs 5th May

Closing our programme of events on Sunday the 1st of May is a whisky themed pub quiz. Many of our events are already fully sold out but please check our web site – www.drouthycobbler.co.uk – to see what is still available. Throughout May we have loads of live entertainment including Blue Rose Code Trio, Canadian comedian Glenn Wool, trad superstars Session A9 as well as theatre and our monthly comedy club. See the advert for our full event listings. Our beer garden has just undergone a complete refurbishment and opens in time for the whisky festival, and we hope the start of summer. Weather permitting we will soon be enjoying al fresco dining - taking full advantage of our famous micro-climate... Saturday evening dining in the upstairs venue has proven extremely popular. To guarantee a great evening we encourage you to book tables in our intimate first floor pop-up restaurant, online or by calling 01343 596000. Informal dining in the ground floor bar continues to be on a first come, first served basis.
