Civil Rights is in the news at the moment and is something close to my heart. I have never quite understood why the colour of one’s skin or the country of one’s birth should dictate how one is treated. Here is a poem by Langston Hughes, US Civil Rights activist (1902-1967) a contemporary of Martin Luther King.

Dreams Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings “I wandered lonely as a cloud, That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host of golden daffodils.” These famous words, written over 200 years ago by William Wordsworth, have come into my mind a few times over the last few weeks, as Spring has brought to life once more, nature’s colours in the gardens and parks and countryside. The poem finishes with the words “my heart with pleasure fills; and dances with the daffodils”. These words remind me of Psalm 104 in which the psalmist offers a great hymn of praise to God for the wonders of creation. In one verse (26), having described the oceans as a garment for the earth he speaks about its purpose , for the many creatures to live in it, the ships to sail on it, and the great leviathan to sport in it. It gives a sense of the playfulness of God in his creative act. The 150 Psalms can be divided into various types. There are psalms of Lament (psalms 13, 22 or 55 for instance) in which someone identifies a situation of suffering and at first gets angry at God, but remembers how God has been merciful in the past and trusts God to be merciful again. The suffering is not a reason to think God doesn’t exist, but a reason to

remember that God is to be trusted to see one through the suffering, not to help us avoid it. Again, there are Psalms of penitence such as Ps 32 or 130, in which the Psalmist gives assurance of God’s forgiveness and describes that feeling of release which comes with it. There is the Psalm of Dereliction (Psalm 22) which begins with the words, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” – the words spoken by Jesus from the Cross (Mark 15:34) - but which ends with words of praise and of self-dedication. Of course there are psalms of joy and praise. In Psalm 98 verse 4, we are called to “make a joyful noise, all the earth, break forth into joyous songs and sing praises. We are to join our praises with the praise which nature itself offers to God, as the floods clap their hands and the hills sing for joy (Ps 98:8) Psalm 148 is a wonderful call to us to join with creation in its praise of God, and in Psalm 65 we are reminded of the gifts of harvest and how “the pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills gird themselves with joy, the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy.” The words ‘joy’, ‘joyful’ or ‘enjoy’ occur some 50 times in the Psalms, and even

in the darkest moments the Psalmist can turn his emotions around with God’s help – “You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy” (Ps 30:11-12). Jesus reminds us in John’s Gospel (15:11) “I have said these things that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” Paul says “Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say, Rejoice” (Philippians 4:4). Just as God rejoices with playfulness in his creation, and shares his joy with us, so we are called to rejoice with him. And joy is seldom something which we experience on our own, but is something which we feel compelled to share. So let us rejoice in nature’s rebirth this spring, recognising the trustworthy God who continues day by day in his creative playfulness, and offering that prayer of trust from Psalm 105 verse 26 – You send your Spirit, and they are created, and so you renew the face of the earth. Parliament Blog & Tide Times We have reached that time of the year again when people from all around the world visit Scotland to experience our Highland Games. We are very fortunate to have so many Games on our doorstep with the Gordon Castle Highland Games, at Fochabers, being the first of the season on 20th May. In recent years our Highland Games have been very successful in attracting more and more tourists, a trend we should all celebrate. However, if you would like to avoid the big crowds I would encourage you to visit some of the smaller and community-run Highland Games. One of my favourites happens to be the Strathconon Games, held on 28th July. It has a warm family feel and where all the profits from the Games go towards the upkeep of the Village Hall. Visiting hidden gems like the Strathconon Games is also a great way to support local communities.

Harsh winter weather creates its own challenges for farmers and crofters, who don’t get to “coorie in” until the worst is over. I want to thank everyone in Moray who helped neighbours, communities and public agencies get and keep roads and vital services open – and who do so regularly when weather is only a North Scotland issue and disappears from national view! A snapshot of farming activity in December 2017 shows the impact of adverse weather with winter planting in particular down. I am determined to help farmers through such weather-related problems which is why I set up a Weather Panel involving farming reps. It is now meeting regularly to look at what we can do to tackle short term problems like those of this year but also find ways to create more resilience in the long term. Ensuring the supply chain works effectively and efficiently for producers is key. Recent income statistics show the difference a fair price deal can make, with the value of barley increasing by £67 million in 2017 due to better yields and good prices and increased volume and better milk prices resulting in a £117 million increase. I know dairy has been in decline in areas like Moray in recent years but these figures show there is still a future for the sector and it is one I am keen to make more sustainable.

It is not long now until Summer Recess, and over the summer months I am greatly looking forward to getting out and about it across the constituency and attending the many community events. It is at this time of year all the hard work of the folk behind the scenes in our communities pays off with these fantastic events – the organisers really do the Highlands proud and often go unnoticed. It is also great to be reminded of how much our area has to offer for both locals and visitors alike. Our area offers everything from Britain’s first and only polar bear cub at the excellent Highland Wildlfie Park to the cutting edge “augmented reality” app that lets visitors learn about Inverness from the palm of their hands. For shopping, our town centres offer the best of independent retail and our booming food and drink sector means there is also plenty of top quality food and drink to enjoy along the way. I hope like me you will spend the summer seeing the best our area has to offer.

AES Building, Lea Road, Forres, IV36 1AU

www.aessolar.co.uk

Create and store your own solar energy The Tesla Energy Powerwall 2 stores up to 13.5 kWh of excess solar energy during daylight hours when your home electricity usage is low, then discharges in the evening during those high usage/peak times saving you money. The Powerwall can be installed with new Solar PV systems or can be retrofitted to existing PV systems. A home battery system protects homeowners from future electricity price increases and reduce reliance on the national grid.

About AES Solar Established in 1979, AES Solar are the oldest solar company in Western Europe and have completed solar thermal and PV installations all over the world. We proudly manufacture our range of solar thermal panels in Forres and our aim is to make Scotland the solar capital of the world.
