The PlayBarn Review

EATDRINKPLAY Keeping children entertained whilst being entertained yourself seems an impossible task at times but a trip to the Playbarn @ Greenfields will never disappoint! No matter what the weather, the cavernous

4 MILES EAST OF ELGIN ON THE A96 01343 843 101

barn will welcome you all. My friend and I took our children there on a Sunday afternoon so they could let off some steam and we could have a catch up. There is a great system of checking in so that they know who is coming and going and you know your child cannot escape if you take your eye off them (which will happen in this huge play paradise). We were all warmly greeted by the unfailingly friendly staff, checked in and allocated a table - and the kids were off!!! A much needed tea and latte were the order of the day for us grown ups and we immediately turned our attention to the menu. It's hard to ignore the food as your eyes are assaulted by the glorious sweets on offer as you order your drinks - everything from moist cakes and tray bakes to Slushies and sweets and chocolates! And the main menu did not disappoint either. I chose the Baked Potato with Prawn Marie Rose and my friend had the Mexican Chicken Wrap. We decided on The Barn Buckets for the kids which is a novel way of allowing your child the freedom of choice and knowing they're getting a healthy rounded lunch. They take a bucket and get to choose a filled roll, a yoghurt or jelly, a fruity pot or a piece of fresh fruit a juice and a bag of crisps, all from a designated area where they all turned into the proverbial 'child in a sweet shop'. They demolished their 'loot' and were off again, leaving us to the important task of putting the world to rights while we waited for our food - which did not take long. The wrap looked fresh and tasty and was confirmed as a winner with its fresh salad and glorious onion rings. The prawns that filled my potato were not the usual small ones you'd expect, but the big ones that were a real treat and this was accompanied by crispy salad and a basket of crisps. The portions were generous and well worth the money. We sat and chatted for ages and realised that, although the place was so packed and we were surrounded by people, it was surprisingly intimate. We didn't have to shout to be heard and did not feel like everyone around us could hear our conversation - we certainly didn't hear anyone else's. Once the session ended we had happy, sweaty children and we were relaxed with satisfied taste buds. Happy children, happy

parents, perfect outing.

The Editor

I was interested to hear something recently on the TV programme QI, hosted by Stephen Fry. He said that 60% of all the facts used in series 1 have subsequently been proven wrong. A sobering thought and makes me wonder why we are often so convinced of our own correctness when we can’t even rely on “known” facts. I shall try hard not to insist on me being right all the time in future!!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Peeling off the dragon skins Have you ever tried to change? I would guess that most of us have from time to time. We start diets, exercise regimes, DIY projects and reading worthy books, among many other things. What they all have in common is that we rarely stick with them and rarely achieve the change we seek. A very determined person can certainly bring about some changes in his or her life, but even these are generally quite superficial. How many of us succeed in changing our attitudes, emotions and personalities? So often we start out with the best of intentions, only to find that our plan has been sabotaged by something inside us. We decide to be calm, but when an irritation comes our way, anger suddenly bursts forth. We decide to be kind, but when it comes down to it we find that self-interest has been our motive once again. The problem is what is often called ‘human nature’. In the

Bible, Paul refers to the struggle with ‘human nature’ when he writes: “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do” (Romans 7:15). In C.S. Lewis’ classic story “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, there is an incident in which the self-centred and unsociable Eustace finds that he has been turned into a dragon. After some time, he meets the great lion, Aslan, who tells him to undress, meaning that he is to remove his skin. Eustace does so, but he finds that he has another layer of dragon skin underneath. When he removes this, a third skin is revealed. However many skins he removes, Eustace finds that he has not really changed very much at all. Eventually, Aslan intervenes, and offers to do the task for Eustace. Going much deeper than he was able to go himself, Aslan achieves what Eustace could not, the complete removal of the dragon skin. Real change has finally taken place and

Eustace is transformed back into a boy. The parallel with our lives is clear. We can struggle and strive to change ourselves but what change we achieve is really only on the surface. It doesn’t deal with the deeper problem of our human nature. For that, we need help from outside ourselves, and the good news is that God offers us exactly that. The exciting message of the Bible is that although we cannot deal with the problem of ‘human nature’ ourselves, God deals with it on our behalf. Jesus’ death on the cross enables us to be free from its domination of our lives: “For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin” (Romans 6:6). When we allow God to remove our dragon skin, amazing change becomes possible! Owen Morris CityLife Church Inverness

Chef’s Confidential

Lavender Crème Brûlée Serves: 4-6 Ingredients: 2 vanilla pods 150ml double cream 150ml single cream 200ml semi-skimmed milk 8 large free-range yolks 75g sugar 1 bunch lavender, flowers picked 4 tbsp caster sugar Method: Preparation time: 50 minutes Preheat the oven to 140°C / 275°F, gas 1. Score the vanilla pods lengthways and scrape out the vanilla seeds with a knife or a teaspoon. Place the seeds into a saucepan, add the pods, all the cream and milk and slowly bring to the boil. Remove from the heat. Meanwhile, get yourself a large bowl that will fit over your pan and beat together the egg yolks and sugar until light and fluffy. Remove the vanilla pods from the pan and, little by little, add the milk and cream to the egg mixture in the bowl, whisking continuously. Add 2.5cm of hot water to your dirty pan, bring to a simmer and put the bowl on top of the pan. Cook the mixture for 5 minutes over the simmering water, stirring often, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Stir in a small handful of lavender flowers, but the trick is to be delicate – you only need a hint of its distinctive, strong flavour. Remove any bubbles or froth from the mixture before dividing it between your ramekins. Stand these in a high-sided roasting tray, and fill the tray with water halfway up the ramekins. Place carefully in the preheated oven and cook for around 30 to 45 minutes or until the mixture has set but is still slightly wobbly in the centre. Allow to cool at room temperature then place in the fridge until ready. To serve, sprinkle each crème brûlée with a tablespoon of caster sugar and some more of the lavender flowers and caramelize under a very hot grill or using the chef's torch.
