You may notice that the paper stock we are using this month is different from the normal. We are running a trial with new printers and new paper stock in an effort to keep costs down in the current climate of rising paper supply costs - due in part to adverse fluctuations in the exchange rate between the pound and the euro. We are hoping that one consequence of the change will be freeing up more pages for editorial in the future. We are also continuing our survey into what editorial people would prefer to read and you can join this survey by visiting www.spotlighton.co.uk and clicking on the survey button.

Words by the Wayside “Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in His salvation.”
#2622Gunner
(Psalm 78:22)
Reader, the greatest sin is not doing our own will, but omitting to do God’s Will. He is not willing that any should perish but that all men and women should repent of their sins and come to the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour. What will all your pleasures and possessions avail you if you have not Jesus Christ as your Saviour? There is peace for you now through Jesus Christ, He is Lord of all.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings The real glory behind the Ryder Cup I have just enjoyed watching the climax to the 2018 Ryder Cup. Against all odds the European team convincingly beat the Americans. The Ryder Cup is the greatest and most exciting golf competition in the world, but few people know of its humble beginnings and the faith of its founder. Sam Ryder was a committed Christian who believed that his faith should affect the whole of his life. In 1895 Sam came up with the idea of seeds sold in “penny packets”, making gardening affordable to the working class. As a Christian he cared for the welfare of his employees and was one of the first to adopt the principle of paid sick leave. He was elected Mayor of St Albans because he constantly helped people and donated money generously to charities. His nickname was the Good Samaritan. Sam combined an active community life with a strong
commitment to his local church. He taught in the Sunday school and became president of the Hertfordshire Sunday School Union in 1911. He served as a deacon for many years and helped oversee the building of a new church. In 1908, aged 50, he suffered a near breakdown. His doctor recommended exercise and a Minister friend took him to the driving range. He was reluctant to go at first but after hitting a few balls he fell in love with the game. He then took golf lessons from one of the top pros in the country and within the year achieved a 6 handicap. His health improved and he lived on to the age of 77. He was an avid promoter of outdoor activity for health benefits. He believed that his faith should influence his attitude to rest and recreation. In 1921, a few days prior to the British Open Championship, a golf competition was waged at Gleneagles, Scotland between British and American professionals. In the bar after the game Sam Ryder

announced, “we must do this again”. He purchased the gold trophy that is used to this day and organised the first Ryder Cup. Interestingly, he also bought a silver trophy called the Ryder Cup for a competition between Christian Ministers. Sam Ryder was a Christian who believed that his faith should make a difference to every part of his life. He was blessed with material wealth, but “he did not put his hope in wealth which is so uncertain. He put his hope in God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” 1 Timothy 6:17. His faith in Christ and his service to others enabled him to take hold of the life that is truly life.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times Christmas is fast approaching and it is time to think about stirring the Christmas pudding but it is also the time to think about how we can help locally. Christmas gives us all the chance to not only to buy local but also to help in our own neighbourhoods, so perhaps that should be our festive resolution. Whilst online shopping couldn’t be more convenient, it comes at a cost. Little of our hard earned money ends up in the local economy and in the Highlands we often have to face expensive and unfair delivery costs. Shopping locally ensures local jobs, more independent shops and some truly unique gifts often showcasing local craftsmanship. So in the run up to Christmas my plea is that we all think about what we can do locally so that all Highlanders can benefit.
Edward Mountain MSP
The European Union has been a good friend to the Highlands and Islands over the decades of our membership - arguably a better friend than the UK Government. Payments have been secured to our hill farmers and crofters under the EU, but 160 Million intended solely for them was siphoned off by the UK Tory Liberal coalition Government. In the EU we qualified for Objective One funding - which led to new causeways for our islands and improvements to roads and bridges. Through the Maritime and Fisheries Fund the EU has also funded major infrastructure improvements to our ports and harbours which are vital for coastal communities. I doubt that the main UK Government supporters of Brexit have ever thought much about the Highlands and Islands in their deliberations. Increasingly the UK Government plans for Brexit resemble a complete mess or, to use a more descriptive Gaelic word - A Burach.

Access to banking facilities are vital for Highlands families, small businesses, and the success of our tourism industry. Yet, ATM cash machines are closing down at a rapid rate across rural areas, leaving many communities and businesses without adequate banking facilities. Latest figures from LINK, the UK’s largest cash machine network, revealed 1,300 ATM machines were lost in the first quarter of 2018. In Aviemore and Grantown on Spey, the few remaining cash machines run out of money on the busiest weekends of the summer – it simply cannot go on. Urgent action is needed and the UK Government can no longer sit on its hands and do nothing while rural communities suffer the consequences.

Scarification – How Much Will it Cost ? It is the toughest job of the year, but it is the key thing to get done if you are serious about keeping on top of moss. You can do it yourself, if it is a small lawn this is feasible, and could be done with a spring rake. Or for a larger lawn you might consider hiring a machine for the day. I think the going rate is around £50 per day, plus £20 delivery and collection. Many of you will have done this yourself and will appreciate it is not a job for the faint hearted. We will have around 800 lawns to scarify over the next few months. We usually use 2 men plus machines and blowers. While a small lawn can often be done in a couple of hours, a larger lawn can be an all day affair, or even longer. I thought it would be worth putting out some typical prices we would charge:

Aerating (hollow-core tining) is a bit cheaper, largely because there is less to clear up, which is very heavy and time-consuming.

Honey Caramel Slice This easy caramel slice recipe is ideal for having on hand for after-school snacks, when having a cup of tea, or even to take to work or bake sales. A winner in any situation!
Ingredients: BASE 200g butter
FILLING
310g plain flour
2 x 395g condensed milk
115g caster sugar
100g butter
2 egg yolks
115g honey
Method: 1. Heat oven to 180°c. Grease a 20cm x 50cm tin and line with greaseproof paper. 2. Make the base, in a food processor. Blitz all the ingredients, with the exception of the yolks, until it resembles a breadcrumb texture. Add yolks and a few teaspoons of cold water, if necessary, to form a dough.
3.
Take half the dough and press into the lined tin, wrap the remaining half and place it in the freezer. Bake for about 15 minutes until lightly golden.
4. Meanwhile in a heavy based pan, place the butter and condensed milk over a low heat until thickened. Take off the heat. Add the honey. Pour over base and allow to cool.
5. Grate the dough from the freezer into a cold dish and sprinkle over the cooled caramel base, bake for around 30 minutes until golden.
