As summer draws to a close, I often look forward to seeing the incredible panoply of colours brought to us by the autumn leaves. From reds to browns, yellows and greens it is a sight to behold. Americans talk of the Aspen woodlands but we have just as stunning autumn scenery along the Moray Firth Coastline. Try stopping alongside one of the many fast flowing rivers and sucking in the views. It cannot be beaten!

I hated the church back then - at least what I’d seen of it. I can remember storming out of church services, throwing chairs around, denouncing the clergy. I always thought there was something terribly wrong with it all - that it had just completely lost it’s way. I can once remember going into a Cathedral to pray, only to be confronted by a group of elderly people sat behind trestle tables insisting I give them money before being allowed in! My overall impression of the church, at that time, was one of deep hypocrisy and narrow-mindedness. I wanted nothing whatsoever to do with it.

turning many away from the Truth. On the one hand, they upheld the way of life embodied and proclaimed by the Master and yet, on the other, they seemed to have overlooked the very thing that made it all possible...
And yet... I couldn’t help warming to the man who, in his day, had had the courage to confront the hypocrisy of the religious leaders; the one who had stormed into the temple with a “whip of chords”, driving out the mechants, scattering the coins of the money-changers and overturning their tables. I just couldn’t make the link between this deeply passionate man and the dismal assemblies that gathered in his name. It was only later on that I realised there were many within the so called “churches” who had not fully understood the reason for his coming. It seemed to me they were like people selling the finest soap that money could buy, but because they themselves were so obviously “unwashed”, no one in their right mind would buy from them... They had failed to apply the very heart of his teaching to their own lives and, in doing so - quite unwittingly - were
In addressing one of Israel’s teachers, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born from above.” Nicodemus is confused by this statement and responds with the question, “How can a man be born when he is old? Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” (John 3:34) But Jesus was speaking of “the new birth"; the new beginning that he makes possible for all who will receive him - “to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision, or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12-13) This really is the crux of the matter - the most extraordinary thing; that he has in fact made a way for us to be made new, for

the slate to be wiped clean, for our hearts to be healed, and for our lives to be transformed. Despite all of my reservations... it happened to me... As I became aware of his true identity as God’s only Son; realising that he had died for my sins and risen from the dead in confirmation of his unique identity, I was finally moved to acknowledge my need of a Saviour. And then... renouncing all that was displeasing to him, and reaching out towards him in prayer, he... as promised... poured his Holy Spirit into my heart to make me new! It was simply that decision to hand over control of my life to him... And O, what joy to find the Saviour... and to be part of this wonderful family that is His Church! Jesus said “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full... If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink” (John 10:10,7:37) Rev Howard David, Grace Com mun ity

extraCts from the minutes of the meeting 6th of June 2011 of inverness City Committee
PART TWO-Ness Walk and Ardross StreetTraffic Orders there had been circulated report no. ICC22-11 dated 25 may 2011 by the Director of transport, environmental and Community services outlining the objections received to the draft road traffic orders for ness Walk and ardross street. mr D henderson commented that he felt the location of the coach park outside the Cathedral was not appropriate. however other members felt that its placement was ideal given that tourists would now be dropped off in a particularly scenic and historic area of the city. Update on Sports Pitches in Inverness there had been circulated report no. iCC-2311 dated 26 may 2011 by the Director of education, Culture and sport updating members on the development of sports pitches and their use in inverness and recommending specific improvements at Bught Park, to be funded through the inverness Common good fund. mr D Wilby summarised the report highlighting the provision for Junior League football;Bught Park playing surface improve ments; and Bught Park general improvements.members welcomed the report. however regarding the situation with finding a solution for inverness City football team they commented that: the scottish Junior football association was placing an unfair burden on small teams to provide facilities with criteria which was unreasonable;the Council was not in a position to set facilities up for teams and options for ground sharing should be looked at;inverness City football team was being penalised because it could not find suitable facilities;to provide separate facilities for sole use by inverness City would exclude the majority of the community;the Council’s obligation was to provide facilities for the whole community; andthe Council and it’s officers had gone to great lengths to find a solution and it was unfortunate that a solution had not yet been reached, but the Council had fully discharged its obligations. in relation to the request for funding from the Common good fund, some members expressed concern that:a standard application form had not been completed, as was required for all other funding requests from external organisations; andthe Cgf was being asked to fully fund the improvements and there was no obvious attempt to find funding from other sources. other members commented that the Bught Park was an important open space for the community and the works detailed in the report were essential and we should just get on with it through Common good funding. in response, officers commented that:they would continue to work with the sJfa to look at solutions for inverness City but would relay the Committee’s feeling that the sJfa’s demands for exclusive facilities were unreasonable; he request for Cgf funding had not been on an application form as detail had been provided to members over three separate reports and it was felt all pertinent information had been provided. however any future funding requests would be presented on an application form; and because of the nature of the work to be carried out (internal access roads) agencies such as sportscotland would not fund. they would however consider

Chef’s Confidential As autumn comes upon us its time to put the garden furniture away and all the summer salad stuff and start to think about more hearty meals. This dishes is a great supper dish and one that can be made in advance and just reheated if you wish.
Haddock, mussel, leek and cider pie Serves 2 people 2 lb of clean, bearded mussels 1 lb of haddock pinned ( no bones) and chopped into pieces 2 leeks chopped into slices butter 1 1/2 oz plain flour 1 white onion chopped roughly 1 glove of garlic or a tea spoon of lazy garlic if no fresh available 1/2 pint cider 1 pint fish stock 1/4 pint double cream 1 1/2 lb of mashed potatoes If you have a little tarragon it does make a difference Steam of the mussels, the best way is to place the mussels in a frying pan and pour enough boiling water over them to just cover them and no more. place a lid on the pan and cook for three - four mins until the mussels are all open, those that do not open .. through out. drain the mussels and leave to cool. In a large sauce pan place a knob of butter with the leeks onion and garlic ( also tarragon if you have). stir and simmer for eight to ten mins until the vegetables are soft. Add the fish stock and cider and simmer for about ten mins until the liquid has reduce by three quarters. Whilst this is cooking remove the mussels from the shells. In a separate sauce pan add a knob of butter and the flour and stir together to form a roux, which should be a golden sandy color, once this is ready add the liquid to the roux and stir until the roux id dissolved into the liquid. Add the double cream the mussels and the chopped haddock and stir through and simmer for two, three mins.

DON’T GET THE WRONG IDEA! Men have many strange, un-scriptural ideas about what it takes to be forgiven and be at peace with God. WHO TOLD YOU THAT...all you have to do is live a good life and God will then accept you? Does God say that your best is good enough for you to be acceptable to Him? God’s viewpoint is “There is none righteous, no, not one.” Romans 3:10. Why is this true? God states, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23. God cannot accept you because you have already sinned. WHO TOLD YOU THAT... being a member of a church would get you into Heaven? To get into Heaven God must deal with your sin problem. Joining a church will not save you. You need forgiveness and cleansing so that God can associate with you. This change is a spiritual birth where God causes a brandnew spiritual nature to live in you. The Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” II Corinthians 5:17. To be forgiven and associate with God you need to be born again. “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3.
WHO TOLD YOU THAT.... obeying God’s law will save you? It is too late. God’s Word states, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” James 2: 10. Every one of us has broken at least one of God’s laws. WHO TOLD YOU THAT... loving every one has anything to do with being saved? This is commendable, however we are separated from God because of our sin nature. Even a sinful person can be loving, however he is stiIl sinful until God removes the stain in Christ.
Men have many strange, un-scriptural ideas about what it takes to be forgiven and be at peace with God. That we can be forgiven and enter a peaceful relationship with God is a matter of scriptural record. Romans 5: I states, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Have you
found forgiveness and peace with God, dear reader?
What must you do to be saved? Go to God in prayer and acknowledge that you are a sinner and need His help. Understand that Jesus Christ died on the Cross to pay God’s penalty for your sins. Ask WHO TOLD YOU THAT ... baptism will save God to accept this death on your behalf. Invite you? Bible baptism has nothing to do with Jesus Christ into your life as your Lord and Saviour, washing away sin, which is our problem before a to live and reign within you. I urge you to turn holy God. The Apostle Peter wrote that baptism to God now, that you may be saved. is, “Not the putting away of the filth of the flesh...” I Peter 3:21. Baptism with water is the vivid You can be saved today if you will come to God symbol of the changed life of one who has a and accept His sacrifice for you. conscience at peace with God through faith in Christ. Will you respond to Him today?

Dreaming of... ...a Skiing Holiday
At this time of year our minds turn to that wonderful winter pastime – the skiing holiday. Europe has become closer and closer with dedicated flights from Scottish airports, mainly Edinburgh and Glasgow with some from Aberdeen. A good skiing holiday is a total change to your normal routines, but it is not a lazy option – skiing or snowboarding use muscles that we don't otherwise use every day, and although exhilarating it can be hard work to ski all day every day for a week or a fortnight. It is a great advantage to be able to test your interest in skiing at a Scottish resort – if you like it you can continue to use the local facilities at weekends but it is tempting to go to the greater snow fields of Europe, and then the ultimate treat is in North America and Canada. In Europe the popular countries are France, Switzerland and Austria. French resorts tend to be high such as Tignes (the highest in France) or Chamonix which is a small French industrial town surrounded by three clear skiing areas. Swiss resorts tend to be picturesque and Alpine-like, including Verbier and Zermatt – Verbier is high with good skiing, and is a mecca for the British if that is what you want, whereas Zermatt has retained its charm as a Swiss-style resort. Austria, although not the highest resorts, offers the most charming and stylised such as Kitzbuhel and St Anton. The west coast of Canada has wonderful skiing in Banff, Lake Louise and Whistler, where the winter Olympics were held in 2010. Whistler offers so much choice there are even 2 mountains to choose from, both offering guides to show you round. The ski lifts are generally larger and wider than European ones, as are the pistes, and the mountain restaurants are enormous and modern, but very efficient. The ski police keep you on your toes. The final but very important consideration is the cost of your skiing holiday. The key components are your flights, your accommodation, your food and drink bills, your equipment hire (skis or snowboard and boots), and your lift passes, but these can range enormously in price and there are always some very good deals around. Switzerland is likely to feel the most expensive this season for the British due to the current very strong Swiss Franc.

nature The Red Deer rut With the summer migrants having left for warmer climes and the Calling Stag winter migrants just starting to arrive, October is a bit of a watershed month for the keen wildlife watcher. However, it also brings one of the most dramatic events in the wildlife calendar, the red deer (Cervus elaphus) rut. From late September, the hills and glens resound to the calls of roaring stags, a sound I have heard described as “a cross between a chainsaw and a burp!” The calls are an attempt by the stags to establish their superiority over other stags, claiming the right to mate with a group of hinds.
Look out also for the stags apparently digging the vegetation by tossing their head, lifting heather and bracken as they do. They are actually spraying themselves to give a distinctive scent, to attract the Red Deer fawn hinds. Not quite old spice but it seems to work for the hinds! After mating, the hinds go through an eight month gestation period with the young born in June the following year, when they are left hidden in long vegetation for the first few weeks, safe from predators such as golden eagle.
October
Often, the roaring alone is not enough to ward off rivals and a challenger will try to penetrate the group to mate with the hinds himself. This challenge is usually met by simply chasing off the would be usurper, however occasionally when two stags are very evenly matched a spectacular clash of antlers can occur, with both stags determinedly fighting for the right to spread their genes. These clashes are usually short lived with no real damage done. However, very occasionally they may end in serious injury or even death.
The stags shed their antlers in April, with a full new set re-growing by the end of August, ready for the rut. In the wilds, the antlers rarely grow beyond 16 points (tines) whilst in captivity or where they have easy access to good grazing they can grow much larger. Stags will often eat the shed antlers, providing their bodies with much needed resources for the regrowth of new antlers. Whilst a stags cannot be accurately aged by it's points, generally the more points, the older the animal. A 12 point stag is a Royal, 14 an Imperial and a 16 pointer is a Monarch. Great places to see the rut around Inverness include Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Strathconon. I also run trips to see the rut throughout October , with a full interpretation of the activity – further details on the web site (below)

For styling your hair for that special night out you want to try something different, and that may mean big hair!!! Big hair is huge at the moment and can be done different ways, for example you could back comp the top half of your hair and brush it back giving instant volume and with some hairspray will stay in all night, this can be

Disconected bobs are right on trend to, this is where one side is shorter than the other side. To make this hair style ultra fashionable, I would reccommend instead off just having it short and straight at the back, to have it coming down at a diagonal this way from all angles. The hairstyle will be amazing and have everyone turning heads, you can also funk this style up alot by using diffrent colours through it! This haircut can be styled for the messy look or nice and sleek
add hairspray. You could try adding volume to your hair with a few big velcro rollers you would be able to place these on yourself and it also gives a lift from the root, this wont give u as much of a wave as heated rollers tho,And off course to finish your hair off for that special night out even try adding a little bit off bling wether it be a sparkly fasanator or a even a flower from your garden. autumn brings with it the main party conferences - traditionally a chance for mps, party members and journalists to crowd into out-of-season British seaside resorts and recall their former glories.
It's nice to be by the sea - although, even at this time of year, the coast of the moray Firth strikes me as a good deal more tempting than the english Channel. politicians themselves have been a bit wary of venturing on to the beach since Neil Kinnock famously had a very close encounter of a watery kind while posing for photographs with his wife in Brighton. this year's liberal democrat event formed part of a slight trend against the seaside theme by heading inland to Birmingham. the experience of a conference is hectic - with a continuous stream of events, speeches and meetings in close succession over four or five days, often on a very wide range of different topics. But it brings a different atmosphere to Westminster and a welcome opportunity to explore and debate new ideas more freely than the day-to-day business of government sometimes allows. Within Scotland, the big party conferences often seem to be held by famous rivers rather than the seaside. With that in mind, I am very pleased that the Scottish lib dems will be returning to eden Court on the banks of the Ness next Spring. the event will bring a boost to local business and the associated media coverage can only raise the profile of the facilities which eden Court and the city have to offer. So now that Birmingham is behind us, I am looking forward to welcoming my colleagues home to the Highlands!

the mood of the times can best be summed up in a short and plaintive poem, by richard armour, entitled “money talks.” “that money talks, I’ll not deny, I heard it once, It said goodbye.” that said, there are a huge number of positives and good developments taking place throughout the land – last week I attended the launch of 240 new jobs in the Oil sector, in subsea work. this week, I shall attend the Oil and Gas Conference in aberdeen, where there is continued success. Indeed, though 38 billion barrels of oil have been extracted from Scottish waters, estimates suggest there may be another 24 billion to come! One of the exciting developments in that sector is called “eOr.” this stands for enhanced oil extraction. Basically, using improved engineering solutions, a greater proportion of the oil in a given oil field can be extracted than before. a further, possible, positive development for Scotland is called Carbon capture and storage. this would sequester carbon emitted, in the North sea disused fields, and this technology may be combined with eOr – so that the injection of compressed carbon can in turn enable more oil to be extracted. the economics of this are being considered, and some of the leading experts in the world work in Scottish universities. Some say that from these policies some 13,000 jobs could be created. So there are hints of rays of sunshine amidst the clouded economic horizon, and though I am no eric morecambe, I hope that I can bring you that sunshine sometime before the end of this parliamentary session.
