Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Lots of people living here will know what it’s like to move into a new house. Many have done that in the last five years, especially in our parish of Slackbuie, Ness Castle and Ness-side. A new house is an exciting thing - pristine, well kitted out, full of potential and possibilities for how it is to look and how it will be filled. It’s also a big deal - by far the biggest investment that you’ve made in your life, especially if you’re a first time buyer. But there is at least one downside to a new house. It’s untested. You won’t really know how well it’s going to hold up until it’s experienced some storms and wind (which we’ll get plenty enough of on our hillside in a month or two). Only once it’s been through that will the quality of the workmanship be apparent. Only then will you know if it’s a house well built. What’s your life built on? Is it a life well built? At the end of Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus makes a pretty big claim. In Matthew 7:24-27, He says this: ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his

house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.’ For lots of people setting up homes and families in their new houses, they’re lives are a bit like those houses. Young, new, pristine. Well kitted out. Full of potential for how the future is going to look. Realising that choosing what few things to really invest in is a pretty big deal. And untested. People who have not yet been through the storms, to see whether what they’re building their pristine new life on is stable and watertight. I was out with a few friends recently, including one who lives with his family in one of the many new houses round our way. He describes himself as agnostic (not sure whether he believes in God or not). We talked about how it’s fair to say that he’s been pretty untested in life. The storms haven’t hit - yet. And that’s

probably why he’s sitting on the fence about God. I also know some people moving into new houses who have been through hell and high-water in their lives. Some of them have found that’s pulled them away from God, and others have found it pushes them towards Him. All of them, I think, have found that just buying a new house isn’t actually enough to build a real life on. And I know (and worship with) a church who finds that what Jesus said is true that when you both know and put into practice what Jesus has to say about how to build a life, that makes for a life that stands in the storms that hit us (and believe me, some storms have hit us). A life that stands even through the storms of death, in fact. What’s your life built on and invested in? How will that hold up as it’s tested - even by death? It’s worth listening to what Jesus has to offer here. I’ve found His workmanship second to none. Rev. Scott McRoberts, St. Columba’s Church, Inverness

Parliament Blog & Tide Times As Parliamentarians head back to Parliament after the summer recess I’d like to reflect on the summer. Many of us will have enjoyed time off with our friends and families in the past weeks. But this isn’t possible for everyone. Tourism is the biggest industry in the Highlands and its workers can generally forget getting time off in summer. Likewise, our valuable public services; NHS, Council, Emergency Services and others were working hard for us whilst many of us were relaxing. I’m also reminded that while many of us were able to enjoy time away from the routine, there are those for whom summer provides no respite from the grind of struggling to make ends. And I look forward to returning to Parliament to help them.

Summer recess is a great opportunity to get out and about to every corner of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey. This really is the best part about being an MP as I get to see first hand the fantastic work that is going on across our constituency. I greatly enjoyed catching up with folk at The Grantown Show and Nairn Highland Games – thanks as always goes to the dedicated volunteers that make events like these happen. In addition to my regular surgeries I also clocked up the miles on my summer surgery tour of our towns and villages. Getting out into our communities is by far the best way to find out not only what is happening but how I, as your MP can help. Details of my forthcoming surgeries can be found at drewhendrymp.scot

Whatever our future holds, change is inevitable. There is no doubt our future would be better in the EU - staying in the single market - enjoying the freedom of movement that is so important for the Highlands. After all, look at how many young people from countries like Poland, Estonia and Latvia work in our hospitality industry. Then consider that Europe has been a good financial friend to the Highlands through investment in roads, bridges, piers, harbours, broadband, students, farmers, crofters and community facilities. But if Brexit is going ahead we can’t wait any longer for Westminster to come up with a sensible plan for rural funding. We need a transition period of five years to provide certainty and stability. My plan proposes to keep in the first two years, broadly the same income support payments to farmers, crofters and land managers as under CAP. Everyone, even the European Commissioner for Agriculture agrees that the Common Agriculture Policy is far too complicated. I want to start making the system simpler. We will remove financial penalties for minor errors in claims. But change needs to be well thought out and planned. Two years on from the EU vote, we still know very little from the UK Government about what will follow Brexit. Will people still as we wish be welcome to come to work here? Will there be tariffs? Will exporters be punished? What about flood of cheap imports? How will the provenance of Scottish produce be protected? Until we have all the answers it is impossible to finalise longer term strategy.

A Dry Summer this Year - at Last - and Now the Grass is Compacted ! The Beechgrove Garden and all the other gardening advice this last month will be about aerating the lawn now. At GreenThumb, this is what we’re doing too. Compacted ground prevents the take up of moisture, prevents air circulation and congests the root zone in the turf. All of these factors weaken the grass, it loses colour, growth slows right down and the lawn becomes prone to the invasion of MOSS and lichen over the Winter.

Aerator

For small lawns traditionally this has meant forking the ground, but for a larger lawn this is not really feasible. What we do, and the golf courses do this too, is run over the grass with a hollow-core tining machine (you can see from the picture this is a heavy piece of kit). It pulls thousands of cores out the ground in no time, and instantly eases the compaction. It’s probably the best thing we can do for our customers, as no-one has an aerator in their shed! However you tackle this, it is a key part of the battle in our climate to control MOSS. Oh - and remember to keep leaves off the grass through the autumn.

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. as your garden survived the heatwave so far this year? Or have you still got wilted plants and a hungry-looking lawn? Well, after finally getting some rain after all that dry weather the pressure is off a little bit, and now is actually a good time to make some strides in your list of garden jobs and to guard against any more dry spells. Brown lawns will gradually re-green of their own accord as moisture levels return to normal, and you need not mow your lawn unless it definitely needs it. Remember not to cut your grass too short during any periods of stress, such as prolonged periods of dry weather. Thorough weeding done in your flowerbeds will pay dividends at the moment as re-growth will simply not be as vigorous as earlier in the year. There are various things you can do in the garden to help prevent suffering too many losses if we do receive any more long periods of dry weather. Making sure there is plenty of organic material in your soil is crucial. You can do this by adding manure, leaf mould, or compost – it is great if you can dig this in deep, but there is no great benefit to going below the uppermost foot of soil. However, a much easier option is to gently hoe it into the surface and let the

worms do the hard work for you. Mulching flowerbeds is another great option, and you can do this with bark chips or, for a more natural look, a composted bark chip. This should be laid over the soil to a depth of around 2-4 inches, being careful not to let it build up too deeply round the base of plants. A good mulch not only suppresses weeds and makes weeding easier, it prevents moisture evaporating from the soil quite so readily. For when we do receive summer downpours consider setting up a water butt that connects to your gutters and collects the rain water for you. Late summer is also a great time for planning garden jobs that can be done over the autumn and winter. Spring bulb planting is done from August onwards, and it is a really good idea to order your bare root hedges and trees soon for delivery later in the year. Bare root planting is done from November-time onwards, and the sooner you can come up with a plan and order the plants the better.
