PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Do you like it hot? As I write this letter it is the end of July and we are in what has been called a heatwave, although it reminds me of normal summers when I was a lot younger. Our opinions of the heatwave have varied considerably, some have enjoyed every moment while others have been longing for a cool fresh breeze. Last week I met with a man from Pakistan who was still feeling the cold as our 25-30 degrees seemed fairly chilly up against the 45-50 degrees of his homeland. I have been reminded of a little phrase on a thermometer that I saw years ago which simply said “Too hot, too cold don’t argue be told!”. The message was simple, that whatever our feelings, opinions or thoughts the thermometer gave us the facts, just as they were or are. That has started me thinking that really life is like that, we have our various opinions, feelings and thoughts about God, what life is about, about why we are here and about our destiny but there is a

spiritual thermometer that just tells us the facts as they are, it is called the Bible. A book that has stood the test of time and is still a best seller today. Its simple but powerful message is life changing and is affecting people from every nation and age group in the world today from China, South America, Africa and even here in the Highlands, lives are receiving hope because of its unchanging story. The central theme of the book is that God loves you, cares for you, has forgiven you of all wrong-doing, has given the gift of eternal life and wants to live in a close relationship with you, giving purpose and meaning to life. All this is possible because of what the Bible has to tell us about Jesus. He was, and is, God’s Son who came into this world (John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life”). He took our pain and our

punishment through his death on the cross so that we could have freedom from guilt, forgiveness of sin and a restored relationship with God the Father. COMMUNITy COUNCIL NEWS ExTRACTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 3RD JUNE 2013 OF THE CITy OF INvERNESS AREA COMMITTEE Appointment to Inverness Women’s Aid The Committee AGREED to appoint Miss J Campbell as the replacement for Mrs B McAllister on Inverness Women’s Aid. Inverness Campus Update A Report by the Director of Planning and Development which provided an update on the development of the Inverness Campus project and specifically detailed information in relation to the current situation and future proposals. In this regard, a presentation was undertaken at the meeting by Ms Karen Thomson, Team Manager - Inverness Campus, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, during which an update on progress to date was provided. It was confirmed that joint working between a number of partners was key to the on-going success of the development which had been awarded an ‘Enterprise Area’ designation by the Scottish Government. Following a summary of current and anticipated future occupiers of the site, and the priorities within the proposed development strategy for the following 3 to 4 year period, it was advised that it was anticipated that the facilities within the Campus would be of benefit to the whole community. This was particularly welcomed as the community element of the project was of major importance for the future. In this respect, and as part of the phased approach to the development, Phase 1 was now complete and an invitation was extended to all Members to visit the site in order to view the facilities which were already in place. The following issues were raised:this project represented an international exemplar in terms of cross-agency working and was hugely important for the future of the Highlands, not least in terms of its connection with other projects in the area, which represented a whole city approach to development; all Councillors should take up the invitation to visit the site in order to view the development and the opportunities which were being created; the potential for the creation of a Science Academy on the site was particularly welcomed; there were major benefits for the community in terms of the number of different facilities which were being developed on the site; the ‘Golden Bridge’ was particularly

page 6 - September 2013

impressive and provided an excellent representation of what was being achieved for the area; it was vitally important that the Campus and the City complemented each other in terms of current and future developments; further information was required in terms of the proposals within the development for future bus links, cycle and pedestrian access; there was a need for more vibrancy within the City Centre and it was hoped that further integration with the Inverness Campus UHI proposals could achieve this on an on-going basis; it was important that different types of student accommodation were offered and that this was located within both the Campus and the City wherever possible; the speed of development on the site was impressive and this highlighted the ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity which was being given to the area; it would be helpful if information could be provided on what would now happen to the existing College Building on Longman Road, particularly in terms of the kind of development which could be accommodated at that location; any viable opportunities for the provision of rail stops as part of the new development should be pursued; there was a need to link these developments clearly to the work of the City Development Officer Working Group, and that this was captured in the next scheduled report from this group to the committee in August; and the strong links with research and development companies as part of the new development were particularly welcomed as they represented very exciting future prospects and opportunities for the area. In response, it was confirmed that discussions were on-going with a number of organisations and groups in terms of future transport links and the development of student accommodation in order to realise the anticipated benefits for the Campus, the City Centre and surrounding area. In this regard, the Committee would be provided with further information and updated on key developments in due course. Thereafter, the Committee:ENDORSED the work which the Council was pursuing in partnership with Highlands & Islands Enterprise to attract

tel: 01309 690063

inward investment to the campus; and NOTED the progress with the development of the project. Glen Urquhart High Associated School Group Overview A Report by the Director of Education, Culture and Sport which provided an update of key information in relation to the schools within the Glen Urquhart High Associated School Group (ASG). During a summary of the report, detailed information was provided in relation to attainment and achievement, as well as wider achievement and notable successes, for the schools within the ASG. Detailed statistics on attendance, absence and the exclusion profile for 2011/12 were also provided, along with information in regard to staffing, funding and buildings in each case. The following issues were raised:this was an extremely positive report on an excellent school and was warmly welcomed; the increase in the levels of adult learning were particularly pleasing; the previous work undertaken on the Associated School Group overview by Mr Clifford Cooke was acknowledged and thanks conveyed to him on behalf of the Committee; this school was a credit to the community and it was hoped that it could be included in future community planning work, including the promotion of quality jobs in the area; it would be helpful if further information could be provided on whether all schools were subject to improvement through selfevaluation and improvement of services; in terms of funding, clarification was requested in relation to the carry forward figure for 2011/12 as this appeared to be very high; the difficulties in appointing staff to rural schools; in terms of the statistics for Destinations 16+, the school had recorded a figure of 97.5% and this was commended; and in terms of the development of strategies by the new Senior Leadership and Pupil Support Teams to improve the personal support provided to young people, it was suggested that consideration should be given to perhaps including input from former pupils where appropriate. Thereafter, the Committee NOTED the content of the report as circulated. Visit the Community Council section on The Highland Council website: www.highland.gov.uk

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

Spectacular scenery & wildlife brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Highlands every year. Our natural environment is such a huge asset that it is essential to care for. I was grateful this month to have the opportunity to visit both the Woodland Trust's Balmacaan forest above Drum, and the Inverness Beekeepers Apiary in Balloch who are both doing their bit. Both organisations are under pressure from the decline in woodland and bee population, both have been campaigning hard to protect the local environment in their own way, and both must be congratulated for their efforts. The Woodland Trust helps protect and create native woodland, and promotes its own woods as places for visitors to enjoy and value. There is no better example of that than at Balmacaan which hosts some fine examples of native woodland. The walk up into the wood has astounding views of Loch Ness and is a historically significant site during the Jacobean Rebellion. Likewise the Beekeepers association has worked hard to educate its members in good practice and the art of beekeeping – with twelve of members recently passing the Basic Beemaster exam. Many attribute the declining population to the use of pesticides and the removal of wildflower meadows; and the UK Government is undertaking an urgent review into the causes of the decline. I enjoyed both visits very much, and wish both organisations every success. Danny Alexander MP

So far we have had the best of summers. The Scottish Open golf championship at Castle Stuart was broadcast to many parts of the globe - as was the Open at Muirfield. As the home of golf, Scotland is a magnet for players from all over the world, and this is a vital part of the tourism industry. The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles next year will be a further marvellous promotion of our excellent courses - around 600 of them in the country. Fiona, Natasha and I will holiday in the Highlands once again this year. It is easy to take for granted what's on our own doorstep. So we will try in this, the “year of Natural Scotland”, to put that right. Picnic at Lochindorb, visits to Landmark - ideal for children and to beaches at Lossie, Nairn and Findhorn; Picking fruit at Wester Hardmuir - with its excellent playpark for the wee one; the best off road cycling in the country, and checking out the polar bear and tiger cubs at the Highland wildlife park; visiting local distilleries and sampling the product ( for me anyway!) - and walking amidst some of the finest scenery in the world. We also like to frequent the local independent small shops in Grantown Nairn, Forres, Tomintoul and so on. The supermarkets can look after themselves. But you won’t get horsemeat from a local butcher! I suspect though that the sunshine will not last the whole summer - we are not, after all, the med. There is a saying that the grass is always greener somewhere else. But in Scotland’s case this is not so: Our grass will always be the greenest. That is why we have the best golf courses in the world!

“...it tastes as good as it sounds.’’

Although not in the heart of Inverness City Centre, The River House is aptly named and definitely not to be missed. On the corner of Greig Street and Huntly Street and looking bright and fresh is a small but very well laid out restaurant. There are inviting double doors which were propped open as we walked up, letting in the warm summer breeze. We were the first to arrive for lunch and we were shown to our table by the friendly and polite waiter. Our first impressions were of class and well-appointed space. There is a small open bar which gives the dining room a cosy feel, which is enhanced by the dark brown of the wood. We were brought the Lunch and A La Carte Menus to choose from. From first glance at the menu it is obvious chef 'Alfie' Little is not offering common fayre. Items such as "Sherry pickled herring with oak smoked Scottish salmon and caviar" or "Collops of monk fish with summer greens, root vegetable mash and a baby prawn butter" are hardly mundane and the care and preparation that goes into each dish means that it tastes as good as it sounds. For our starters we shared two items from the lunch menu - a warm goats cheese tartlet with a cranberry and red onion jam and Chicken liver parfait with melba toast and a spiced fruit chutney. They both arrived on beautiful, simple

white dishes which were spotlessly clean (a particular soapbox of mine). The chicken liver parfait was smooth and had just the right strength and depth of flavour. The melba toast and spiced fruit chutney which accompanied it were well chosen partners. The warm but sharp flavours in the fruit chutney were a lovely contrast to the earthy flavour of the liver. The tartlet was going to be a bit of a risk I thought, as not everyone is a fan of goats cheese but I was pleasantly surprised by the combination of flavours. The warm goats cheese would have been too rich on its own but each taste of the warm creamy cheese was cut perfectly by the cranberry and red onion jam. It was also accompanied by a small spray of rocket and a drizzle of balsamic which gave just the right amount of freshness to the dish. Feeling enthusiastic about the meal so far, we chose our main courses from the lunch menu also. The Grilled Scottish salmon with crushed potatoes, steamed asparagus and hollandaise sauce was a wonderfully delicate and light dish. The salmon was perfectly cooked, very fresh and well seasoned. The potatoes were crushed, not mashed which was a pleasant change and the young asparagus was well cooked with a touch of crispness to it. The whole dish was brought together nicely by the creamy, fresh

hollandaise. Our other choice was the Pan Roasted Breast of Chicken with a garlic, rosemary, lemon and white wine butter. It was served with mashed potatoes and courgettes. Each aspect of the dish was full of flavour and perfectly cooked. The chicken breast was wonderfully moist and the lemon and rosemary gave a fresh balance to the creaminess of the butter. Having polished off our main courses enthusiastically, we were feeling a bit naughty when we asked to see the dessert menu! Again we chose to share the two items on the menu which appealed to us most - the Summer Fruit Bread N Butter Pudding (topped with clotted cream and served with blackcurrant coulis) and My Better Half's Pavlova (with whipped cream and fresh mango drizzled with passion fruit coulis and finished with white chocolate shards). Both desserts were delicious but our definite favourite was the pavlova! The combination of a beautifully toasted meringue with whipped cream and tropical fruits was more than delicious, but paired with the white chocolate it was truly amazing. It would be worth going back just for that! We opted not to drink but there is a very good selection of wines and cocktails - as well as that bar I mentioned! Our service was far better than most restaurants these days, the prices are very reasonable and the ambiance is mellow and classy. They even had my favourite artist (Adele) playing at a comfortable volume in the background. If you choose to visit The River House restaurant, you will undoubtedly want to go back again and again.....and again!

Dreaming of... River Cruising

River Cruising is a part of the travel market growing in popularity each year. For centuries people have travelled Europe’s mighty rivers and waterways to trade, explore and sometimes conquer! Steeped in history and culture, flowing through stunning scenery, they form natural links connecting the continent’s greatest and most beautiful towns and cities, from the medieval to the modern. You can cruise on the majestic Rhine and Danube – Europe’s essential arteries studded by atmospheric cities like Koblenz and Vienna. Standing guard you will see astonishing fairytale castles whilst learning about mythical legends, historic strife and triumph. You can be on the magical, meandering Moselle with its impossibly steep, riverside vineyards and lesser known, yet equally beautiful River Main, twisting through Germany’s rural heart. The Elbe, meandering through Saxon Switzerland, connects historic Berlin and baroque Dresden, whilst in France, the Rhone flows majestically from almost the Burgundy vineyards to Avignon and van Gogh’s Arles, in the heart of sun-kissed Provence. River Cruising has the huge advantage like Ocean Cruising that you unpack your case only once into your cabin, and your cabin moves around with you all the time. You can leave your belongings in the care and security of the ship’s company while you go ashore to see the sights, probably having had a lecture on them before arriving at that particular place. Another good part of the world for River Cruising is in Vietnam and Cambodia, and indeed it is a very effective way of seeing much of these countries properly. Imagine boarding your River boat at Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and moving up the Mekong River through Phnom Penh, to Siem Reap and ultimately Angkor Wat. This trip takes 14nts from the UK, and takes in a 2nt stay in Saigon, and a Mekong River Cruise through Cai Be, Sa Dec, Tan Chau, Phnom Penh, Chong Koh, Kampong Chhnang, Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. Whatever the budget there is a River Cruise for you, and many are very good value for money as long as they are purchased from a trustworthy source.

It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

“Many venues have a marquee in their garden, but how many have a garden in their marquee…?”
