Welcome to the first issue of the new SpotLight on Inverness Community Magazine. SpotLight is delivered free every month to all 47,000 homes in and around Inverness and District. SpotLight on Inverness is following in the footsteps of the already well-established SpotLight magazines covering the communities of Buckie, Keith, Elgin, Lossiemouth, Forres and Nairn. For some time now we have been asked when we would produce one for Inverness and so here we are! SpotLight is primarily aimed at providing (for free!) useful information to the community that is sometimes difficult to locate oneself. If you browse through the magazine you will find information on Clubs & Societies, Churches, Community Council, Local What’s On, Useful Numbers, School Term Times, Tide Times and regular Local Interest Articles. SpotLight does not receive any public grants or council assistance and subsequently is dependent on advertisers to help cover its costs and therefore we are keen to hear from businesses that would wish to promote themselves to the 47,000 homes in and around Inverness and district.

SpotLight I wonder whether you’ve seen the recent advertising campaign that poses the question “The meaning of life is ….”. Underneath runs the strap line “Fill in the blanks at alpha.org”. For the past two decades, ALPHA has been the friendly, non-threatening context through which many people have been introduced to the Christian faith and been helped to find answers to many of their spiritual questions. In our own area of Inverness as well as throughout the country, many new alpha courses will be launched and you can find one near to you by logging on to www.alpha.org I was in my teens when I discovered the answer to the question “The meaning of life is ….” I was just like many teenagers who weren‘t involved in anything particularly bad or destructive. But I already knew that there was something missing from my life. I didn’t know who or what that was. Paul H. Johnston said “God has shaped a peculiar vacuum inside us - a vacuum shaped like God. Nothing can satisfy that vacuum except God

Himself. You can put money, homes, wealth, power, fame or anything you want into the vacuum, but it doesn’t fit, Only God fills it, fits it and satisfies it.” I was trying to fill the vacuum in my life with things that brought me pleasure. The church and Jesus didn’t have any place in my life but meeting with committed Christians at school and observing their lives created a curiosity within me. There was something attractive about them. They had something I knew I didn’t have and I wanted to find out what that was. There were lots of questions asked and we had many discussions. It didn’t take me long to discover that what was missing from my life was a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I knew a little about Jesus as a historical person but I didn’t know Him personally in my life. The more I read the Bible and spent time with committed Christians, the more I discovered about myself, about God and about Jesus. I really didn’t need anyone to tell me I was a sinner. I knew that from my own experience.

But I did discover how much God loved me and how Jesus dealt with my sin so that I could become a new person and have a new start in life. Jesus said in John 10:10 “My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.” Now I’m getting closer to retirement, I can tell you I’ve proved the truth of this for myself over these years. There wasn’t any ALPHA when I was a teenager but I’m thankful for people who took time to answer my questions and discuss the things I found difficult to accept until I invited Jesus to take control of my life and become my Lord and Saviour. If you are looking for answers to life’s great questions, I encourage you to find an ALPHA course near to you or to visit a church where you are given the freedom to ask your questions. You’ll find a warm welcome and I pray that you also may be able to discover the answer to “The meaning of life is …” Bill Slack Culduth el Christian C en tre In verness

Is it the right time to buy? SpotLight property market survey ‘As safe as houses’ - a phrase that we often hear to reflect something that is beyond risk and a solid investment. In the last few years the national media would have us believe that the property market is no longer ‘as safe as houses’. But how much of this is scaremongering to make a good story, and how much of it is actually based in truth. Below is a table of house values across the whole of the UK including Scotland, which shows price movements over the past 35 years, moving from an average house price (adjusted to take into account inflation) in 1975 of £75,188 to the current level of £168,719. We can see from the graph that there has been a general movement upward with occasional periods of falling prices, most notably in the period 1990 to 1995, and then 2007 to the present time. But it can be seen that these periods are generally temporary and in the past growth has returned relatively quickly.

Thai Steamed Scottish Salmon Over the summer months we have been playing with the fusion of some different flavours from around the world. One of the most popular dishes we have created is Thai Steamed Scottish Salmon, which is a very quick & easy dish to create, healthy and cost effective. If you do not like salmon you can use trout or a good thick white fish such as cod. Serves 2 people Cooking time – 20 minutes Preparation time – 30 minutes Ingredients 1 bunch of fresh coriander Some fresh mint leaves Teaspoon of ginger 3 teaspoons of garlic Pinch salt & pepper 2 limes, juiced up 1 large red chiili, deseeded and finely chopped (wash your hands thor oughly after handling the chilli!) 1 large pudding spoon of fish sauce (if you don’t have fish sauce, use a fish stock cube with a splash of dry sherry) 2 scottish salmon fillets

Place the salmon fillets in a shallow dish and pour the sauce over, making sure the salmon is well covered. Leave for 30 minutes in the fridge. Set up your steamer and add a little lime juice to the water. Place the marinated salmon in the steamer, take a spoonful of the marinade and pour over the top of the salmon. Steam for approx. 20 minutes. Once the fish has been steamed, serve with noodles or rice and some stir fried vegetables.

Method In a food processor, throw in the coriander, mint, ginger, garlic, lime juice, fish sauce, chillies, salt & pepper and blend until smooth. page 12 - September 2010

SpotLight extracts from the minutes of the meeting of 7th June 2010 of inverness city committee

City Flood Defences - Update the head of transport and infrastructure provided a detailed presentation to members regarding development Phases i and ii of the downstream sections of the south West channel. the history of flooding in inverness was outlined and the types of flooding which affect the city explained in further detail. it was emphasised that in inverness the important factor is the combination of tidal surges and weatherrelated flooding. it was further clarified that the dwarf wall design for the flood defences would be attractive and in keeping with the existing streetscape designs, so as to not be detrimental to the riverscape. • the new flood Plan must include a regular maintenance schedule and this would improve the management

of sites; • a new flood team had been established and would be consulted during the planning process for new developments. in future, greater emphasis would be placed on the provision of advice on new developments and in particular keeping developments away from flood plains. the flood team would also ensure suDs schemes and attenuation Ponds are in place; all with the help of 3-D planning • new regulations are about to be published, clarifying who is responsible for the maintenance of attenuation Ponds/suDs schemes and these would be monitored • it was noted that gullies needed to be emptied of weeds and litter and this was part of a tecs cyclical maintenance programme. mr r

evans to be alerted to this. Scotland’s Housing Expo the following was highlighted: • there would be 52 houses on 27 plots with a variety of styles, including flats, semi detached and bungalows. 20 of these would be affordable and managed by albyn housing • each of the houses had a theme, for example highland council’s plot would demonstrate recycling in the home environment • 6 contractors had been employed on site • there would be workshops, seminars, lectures and exhibitions throughout the event • the economic benefits to inverness had been estimated at between £550,000 and £680,000 with 30,000 visitors expected

viduals that regularly come up at my surgeries in Inverness, Nairn and all over the Strath, surgeries in each village hopefully offer people the chance to come and speak to me about more general concerns too – both locally and nationally.

While there will still need to be a few visits to London, it is a great relief after some of the most hectic months of my life to be able to spend a bit of time with the whole family back in the Highlands.

Given the choice between the endless succession of meetings in Whitehall and an August afternoon spent working my way down Loch Ness-side from Dores to Foyers, Whitebridge and Gorthleck, I certainly know which is preferable!

Every year since I was first elected, I’ve used this period to hold advice surgeries in many of the smaller communities which I am fortunate to represent. As well as being a chance to raise the kinds of problems facing indi-

"So, you are on holiday, then!" he asked, grinning broadly. "No, in recess," I replied. "That's politician speak for holiday" he claimed, before adding, in a nudge-nudge winkwink kind of way: "more time to turn the sprinkler on the duck pond house, eh?"... "No, actually the only ducks I have are the collection of yellow plastic ones my two year old daughter plays with in the bath, together with her mini motorised dolphin which swims up and down its length......... This was at the more sceptical end of the many exchanges I have enjoyed, over the past month, spending recess time visiting local small businesses in Inverness and

Nairn. As a Government Minister I am out of the constituency a lot so I was keen, as local MSP, to gain an up to date impression of what is on their mind. Whilst I am sure we will not forsake M & S and the Eastgate Shopping Centre, the Old Town of Inverness and the narrow shopping streets of Nairn have a great deal to offer. They are not only underrated but also under visited. As someone who has over the years, regularly used many of the shops there, I would make this plea to Spotlight readers: Give the old shops a try, or another chance, if you have got out of the way of using them. There is a diverse array of goods and services, many specialised, and many of the items that you will simply not see in the UK multiples, efficient though they are. If we don’t use them, we may lose them.

Community Council continued mrs s torrance summarised that the event would showcase modern, innovative, sustainable low-energy designs and would be a unique opportunity for the city of inverness. in response to questions raised, mr g robson confirmed that the estimated number of visitors to the event (30,000) had been predicted using visitor numbers from other events. these figures also indicated that approximately 75% of the visitors would visit from within a one hour travel time radius. mrs s torrance added that they had chosen

august for the event as it would coincide with school holidays in both scotland and england and encourage more families to attend. it was also hoped this would be the best month for good weather and as an outdoor event it would be key to attendance levels.
