Things to do ACTIVITIES

Fishing

The Moray Firth has some of the greatest freshwater and sea angling in the world. Best of all is the fact that if you are happy to fish for different species, you can 'fish the Firth' twelve months of the year! The Firth provides the estuaries for 18 of Scotland's most important salmon rivers, including the Nairn, Findhorn, Spey and Lossie. All of these rivers have angling clubs or associations which offer fishing, although membership numbers are limited and there may be a waiting list in a few cases. Stocked fisheries provide good sport, easy access including many opportunties for less able anglers, and tuition facilities. Except in severe weather, these fisheries can be accessed all year round. The Osprey Fishing School at Avielochan, near Aviemore offers tution in fly fishing for both trout and salmon. The Angling Centre in Elgin, Forres Tackle Shop and Pat Fraser in Nairn are good places to start for all your fishing needs.

BEACHES

Ardersier Beach, Inverness

East Beach, Lossiemouth A popular beach which gets very busy when the weather is good. Access is via a long wooden bridge over the River Lossie. Things to do plenty of waves for leaping over. If you want to get away from the crowds you may have to go quite a way round the bay.

West Beach, Lossiemouth Another popular beach, brilliant for a family day out. At high tide most of the sand is covered but as the sea recedes lots of rock pools are exposed. The sea is shallow for a long way out and on hot days is heated by the warm sand. There is plenty of parking on the esplanade which is right next to the beach. The sands curve round to Covesea Lighthouse which is now a visitor centre.

Findhorn Beach One of the best known beaches in Moray, part of an estuary it’s a bird watchers favourite. The wide flat sands are great for dog walking and sand castle building. The sheltered waters of the estuary also offer excellent sailing and water sports opportunities. The heritage centre with its restored ice house is definitely worth a visit. After a busy day on the beach Findhorn Village offers a good selection of places to eat.

10

to the Black Isle. The coastline is home to resident schools of dolphins. Popular family beach with paddling pool, tea rooms and a summer activity programme.

Roseisle Beach A favourite with locals and tourists alike, it is sited between Findhorn and Burghead. The entrance to the beach is through a forest of Scots pines. There are excellent facilities with picnic tables and barbecue pits in the trees. There is a children’s woodland play park and well maintained toilet facilities which include an outdoor shower. Things to do Elgin Cathedral & The Biblical Gardens Elgin Cathedral, or the Lantern of the North as it is also known, is one of Scotland’s most beautiful buildings. Dating back to the thirteenth century the majority of it is now a ruin. There are some parts which remain complete. The Chapter House is one, its octagonal ceiling is said to be one of the best in existence. The Chapter House can now used as wedding venue. Visitors can climb up the spiral staircase to the top of one of the towers, if you are either claustrophobic or afraid of heights, you may wish to think twice before embarking on this journey. Once at the top the views are stunning. The Cathedral under the stewardship of Historic Scotland, opening times can be found on their website. Adjacent to the Cathedral is Elgin’s Biblical Garden, a peaceful three acre space which is open from May to September. Admission is free. Planting is around a central cross and includes all one hundred and ten plant species mentioned in the Bible. It also has many life size sculptures depicting a variety of the parables including the Good Shepherd and the Prodigal Son.

Grant Park Forres House and its grounds were gifted to the town in 1926 by Sir Alexander Grant, a wealthy benefactor of the town. To celebrate its opening, the Australian XI cricket team played a match here. Forres House was the town’s library until the 1970s when it burnt down. there are picnic areas, a bowling club, the cricket pitch, woodlands walks, a children’s play area, public conveniences as well as the floral sculptures that Forres has become so famous for in the Scotland and Britain In Bloom competitions. Kilravock Castle Located near the village of Croy, between Inverness and Nairn. It has been the seat of the Clan Rose since 1460. The castle is a composite of a 15th-century tower house and several later additions. The original name for the castle was Cill Rathaig; Scottish Gaelic meaning "church at the small circular fort". Castle Gardens are open to the public: Mon-Sat 10am 4pm. This is free and worth visiting. factor @ kilravock.com Kinloss Abbey, Forres It was the largest Cistercian Monastery in the North. Kinloss Abbey is 3 miles east of the town of Forres in the county of Moray. At the time the Abbey was built it

would have been a heavily wooded area on the edge of an estuary known as Findhorn Bay which out flows into the Moray Firth. These days the area is very different with the Abbey grounds forming part of the local cemetary. To find the Abbey just follow the signs to Kinloss Barracks from the A96, Inverness to Aberdeen trunk road.

There are also some ruins of Elgin Castle in evidence.

Lecht Mine, Tomintoul Set in the hills at the foot of the Lecht, the iron mine has a rich and interesting history. Originally opened as an iron ore mine in 1730 the mine saw substantial losses and closed only seven years later. The mine was re-opened in 1841 by the Duke of Richmond as a Manganese Mine, and at its peak of activity over 60 men and boys worked the mine

Things to do and it was, and still is, the largest manganese mine every worked in Scotland. Sadly competition from imported ore caused the mine to close for a final time after just 5 years of trading. Only the crushing mill building remains, this being very solidly built to carry the water wheel, but spoil heaps and foundations of other buildings can be seen across the burn. The mine can be reached by a short walk from the Well of the Lecht car park. Ballindalloch, AB37 9ES T: 01479 870070 info@glenlivetestate.co.uk

Little Cross, Elgin The Little Cross stands where the approach to the Cathedral leaves the High Street, Elgin. It was, apparently first erected in 1402 AD and marked the limits of the Cathedral Sanctuary. In its present form it consists of a tall column set on a flight of steps and capped by a sundial dated 1733, during which year the Cross was probably re-built but the copestone with carved figures is from some much earlier structure. The sundial and top of the column are now in the Museum having been replaced in facsimile in 1941.

The Mercat Cross, Elgin Commonly known as the Muckle Cross, stood, until circa 1792 AD, on a site just east of St. Giles Kirk. The structure removed at that date seems to have been erected in the reign of Charles I and consisted of a hexagonal platform or raised balcony 12 feet high, from the centre of which rose a tall shaft surmounted by the Scottish Lion. The Lion alone survived, and the present Cross, erected on the old site in 1882, is, in all other respects, a restoration. The Mercat Cross, Forres Stands in the centre of the High Street in front of the Tolbooth. It is in the Gothic style of architecture and stands forty feet high. The Cross is a miniature version of Sir Walter Scott's Monument in Edinburgh. The present market cross of Forres stands on the site of the former. It was built in 1844. The base of the former cross was left in position and, the new cross was built over it. Nothing of the old cross can now be seen. Three carved stones

from the top of the old market cross are preserved in the Falconer Museum, Forres.

Mortlach Church One of the oldest sites of Christian worship in Scotland. The church of Mortlach was dedicated to St. Luag who was also patron of an ancient Celtic monastery in the area.

Nelson Tower, Forres The Nelson Tower was built by the Forres Trafalgar Club in commemoration of Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The Tower was opened in 1812 and is the most northerly of all Britain’s Nelson monuments. Visitors may climb to the top of the octagonal tower and enjoy spectacular views across the Moray Firth. They can also enjoy the exhibitions of local photographs and Nelson memorabilia shown in the Tower’s two upper rooms. Open Apr - Sept, 2pm - 4pm, 7 days a week. Pluscarden Abbey Pluscarden Abbey is the home of a community of Benedictine Monks. It is the only medieval monastery in Britain still inhabited by monks and being used for its original purpose. Situated six miles south-west of Elgin in Moray, the monastery enjoys the peace and stillness of a secluded glen, but is easily reached by road from the town. The atmosphere of quiet reflection and of work dedicated to the glory of God is the same now as it was in the thirteenth century, when a community of monks first came to this part of Moray. If you visit the Abbey today, you can enjoy not only the beauty of its architecture and its setting but also something of the restful atmosphere of

Rait Castle Located 2.5 miles south of Nairn. Over the centuries, the building was owned by several different families. Around 1404 or 1405 Sir Alexander Gervaise de Rait is said to have killed the 4th Thane of Cawdor whose son was subsequently given the castle. Less than 40 years later it appeared to have reverted to the Mackintoshes who were also previous owners. It is well worth a visit since, although now in ruins, it is generally in good condition and an excellent example of a 13th century hall-house.

Rothes Castle, Rothes Only one wall remains but great views from Castle Hills. Built to protect the vital trade routes to Elgin the site of Rothes Castle is recognised as one of the most ancient strongholds in Moray. It is estimated that the castle was four storeys high and was protected by a portcullis and drawbridge.

Scalan Seminary, Glenlivet For most of the 18th century the Seminary of Scalan in the Braes was the only place in Scotland where young men were trained for the Catholic priesthood. From 1717 to 1799 over 100 priests were trained at this secluded site, despite repeated attacks by Hanovarian soldiers, and the College played a vital role in keeping the traditional Catholic faith alive in northern Scotland. Spynie Palace Set in beautiful countryside two miles North of Elgin off the A941. For five centuries

16

Spynie Palace was home to the Bishops of Moray, in the late 15th century Bishop David commissioned the building of a massive tower house standing over 22m high. The tower is still standing today and is one of the largest tower houses ever built in Scotland. Spynie Palace is now under the care of Historic Scotland. Further information can be found on their website. Opening hours Summer 1st April 30th September, daily from 9.30am to 5.30pm.

St Laurence’s Church, Forres A church has been on this site since medieval times having been commissioned by Alexander III of Scotland. The original building was famously burned down by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390. The impressive building that dominates the town today was opened in 1904. It is a fine example of gothic architecture and whilst the exterior is impressive, the interior has been described as unmissable - well worth a visit. Open May - Sept Mon - Fri 10am - 12noon, 2pm -4pm. Other times by arrangement T: 01309 672260 Stotfield Disaster Memorial On the morning of Christmas Day 1806, 21 men from Stotfield Village set to sea in three fishing boats taking advantage of calm weather. The weather turned and the sea took all 21. A beautifully made granite boat commemorates the lives of these men and the others who have been lost at sea. Set on the West Beach Esplanade, it overlooks the natural harbour and on a fine day you can see the Northerly tip of Scotland.

Sueno’s Stone, Forres One of the most impressive standing stones in Europe and the tallest Pictish stones in the British Isles. Sueno’s stone is thought to date back to the 9th or 10th century. Carved on one side is a Pictish cross whilst on the other side is a battle scene thought to commemorate the Victory of King Malcolm II over the Viking King Sweyn. The stone was uncovered in the middle of the 18th century and the glass casing that protects it today was added in the late 1990s. It has had to be encased in an armoured glass cover to prevent erosion and damage. At Findhorn Road, Forres. Can be visited all year round.

The Thomson Monument, Forres Erected in 1857 on the site, where there once stood a castle, this monument commemorates the life of James Thomson, a surgeon from Cromarty who died at the age of 31 in the Crimea.

The Tolbooth, Forres A govermmental building of some sort has stood on this site since records began but the building you see now was completed in 1849 and was home to Forres Town Council until 1976. Now, the Community Council of the Royal Burgh of Forres hold their monthly meetings in the courtroom of The Tolbooth. Making Whole Family Recovery Possible Arrows is a holistic service for individuals both Adults experiencing drug and alcohol problems, and children and families The range of supports available in Arrows are both individual and group centred and can be used as part of a whole family approach to recovery or one to one support personally tailored and unique to each family’s circumstances.

program. Arrows work to improve coping strategies and parenting approaches through supporting activities, play and positive experiences. Arrows can support parents to recognise the needs of their children throughout their recovery journey, how to support them through the changes involved and in hearing their views within the family’s support.

Worried about a loved one and their substance use? Friends, family or others connected to an individual

nature of treatment and support with Arrows is upmost and we support individuals to understand the boundaries of sharing information, as well as making informed choices when involving loved ones within our whole family approach.

Worried about your substance use and its impact on your family and relationships? Individuals experiencing drug and alcohol issues may feel isolated from loved ones, unable to seek support from those closest to them or pressurised into establishing positive changes which can lead to deterioration within relationships, and creating further challenges for recovery. Arrows can support you to involve loved ones in your recovery at a pace and level that suits you. We can guide you to have conversations with loved ones inviting their involvement within your recovery plan. Many of our activities, groups and events are family inclusive; we provide focused support through couples and family counselling. Arrows work with parents experiencing substance issues to support their role as a parent within their recovery treatment

a close relationship with someone struggling with an addiction can be frustrating, painful and sometimes a lonely journey. We can work with you using a range of CBT based tools, helping you cope and support your loved one. Many of these skills are valuable for the family even if your loved one does not enter treatment or has already begun the treatment process. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved one to help prevent situations escalating.

Linking with Carers Support Family members often don’t recognise themselves as unpaid carers even though they are entitled to the carer supports available. Arrows and Quarriers Carers Support Service (Moray) can work with you on a joint register to ensure access to the training, short breaks and group supports available through their Service.
