Pastoral letter and Church Meetings
‘It just would not be Christmas without them’ - blares out the headline banner from the mail-shot, just dropped in through my letterbox. This got my attention, as a church minister I am really interested in what might be missing to make Christmas ‘not’ Christmas. So I turned the page, it seems that in the mind of the supermarket which produced the flyer, it’s ‘just not Christmas’ unless your cupboards are stuffed with stacks of shortbread and biscuits. There are to be, ‘sweet treats within easy reach’, and an offer of reduced priced multi-packs of booze and wine to fill your fridge, not to mention of course that something……….. ‘truly irresistible’! Maybe I’m missing something I thought. Sure it’s nice to have treats nothing wrong with that, indeed a little extra to celebrate can be a good thing, although the bible gives good advice about not overdoing it to the point of excess, (e.g. read Luke 12:19 & 20 and Philippians 3:19). Still, the thought that not having such things somehow makes Christmas ‘not Christmas’ doesn’t seem quite right, does it? However, for many people they do seem to get caught up in the wily whirlwind of advertising abandonment. The adverts titillate the senses and before they know it, it
seems like they’ve just got to have whatever it is. Trouble is, especially these days, maybe they just can’t afford it. But they are tempted to buy it anyway………. on credit. Succumbing perhaps to the adverts of the big credit card companies “Life flows better with Visa” (according to Visa), and you’ll “Get back more than you expected: priceless”, according to Mastercard.
Priceless - yes, irresistible- absolutely, but only if you accept the Christmas present. And from which life will flow better, it’s by no means always easy, but the ‘flow’ sure is an improvement - ask any Christian. Jesus is of course the Son, and Christmas is essentially a celebration of his birth. And what a Christmas present he brings! The banner headline should read this: ‘It just would not be Christmas without HIM’. Please accept this gift this Christmas.
Well, my Christmas message for you is this. ‘Don’t you fall for it.’ You’ll certainly be facing a fair chance of getting back something more than you expected. That’s called monthly compounding interest, and it’s well known that people can still be paying off last year’s Christmas by the time the next one comes around. ‘Life flows better’ because you use a credit card? To use a local colloquialism, “Aye right!” And the sweet treats within easy reach are not at all ‘truly irresistible’.
Rev: Tim Power Minister, Nairn Baptist Church
But there is something about Christmas from which you can get back something more than you expected, which is ‘priceless’, and from which life will ‘flow better’. Something which can be ‘truly irresistible’, and which if found to be missing certainly means that it would just not be Christmas. And that is…………….Christ. And Jesus Christ said, recorded in the gospel of John 3:16, this: ‘For God loved the world so
The bible teaches about enslavement through debt and how if possible debt should be avoided, please ask a Christian friend or minister should you wish to know more, if you find yourself in such a position there is a Christian organisation `Christians Against poverty’ who run a particular ministry to help people become free of debt, they can be contacted at www.capuk.org/home/index.php

Culloden Battlefield
SpotLight Local Interest
The 16th April 1746 is a date which has been etched deeply into the annals of this nation’s history due to the battle of Culloden and the far-reaching effects of its aftermath. Essentially the battle of Culloden was to end the possibility of restoring the Stuart household to the thrones of England and Scotland after a long period of risings which had begun with the deposition of James VII and II in 1689. The roots of this struggle between the Stuart and Hanoverian dynasties were steeped in religious and ideological differences. The battle lasted no more than an hour and saw the army of approximately 5-7,000 Jacobite soldiers robustly beaten by the 10,000 Government troops. It is estimated that 1,500 Jacobites were left dead compared to the 50 Government losses in the hour of battle. In terms of global conflict history, these are by no means a large number of losses or, indeed, even a large battle. It is perhaps due to the immediate aftermath of the battle that it has come to have such an extraordinary connection in Scottish history. To this day the battle still evokes strong emotions in many visitors and conjures strong support for Gaelic culture, which was irrevocably changed by the systematic ‘Pacification of the Highlands’ by the Hanoverian Government.
The project was funded by a wide variety of benefactors and, with backing from the Scottish Government, the European Union, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Bòrd na Gàidhlig, as well as other generous donations from various trusts and sponsors. As well as these, donations were made by individuals; including many National Trust for Scotland members; and fund-raising projects were also set up which saw a large amount of support from Scottish descendants all over the globe. This gave the opportunity for inscribed stones and ceiling names to be displayed at the centre in exchange for donations to the Memorial Project. The visitor to the centre will be able to experience an incredible journey through the 1745 rising. The story is told through a plethora of interactive media. Highlights of this include: The ‘Character Stations’, which give the visitor first hand accounts of the key events; ‘Campaign Tables’, which show the movements of both armies during the campaign. Most notable are the four minute ‘Battle Immersion Film’, which puts the visitor right at the heart of the hand to hand fighting, giving the visitor a shock of emotions to bring the style of fighting and the ferocity of the battle to life; and the ‘Battle Table’, which shows the battle happening from an aerial viewpoint, clearly showing the movement of regiments and the tactical decisions that were made to create the outcome. As well as the modernistic use of museum technology there is a remarkable collection of weaponry and objects on show, and alongside this the costumed Living History presentations will be guaranteed to bring the story of Culloden to life. Having experienced all of this, the visitor can also take a handheld GPS guide onto the battlefield itself, giving them information at various points as they see for themselves the place where this infamous event took place.
Today, Culloden Battlefield is owned and cared for by Scotland’s leading conservation charity, The National Trust for Scotland. The Trust depends on membership, donations and revenue raised at the properties to protect, maintain and provide education and enjoyment at over a hundred unique and amazing sites throughout Scotland. At Culloden, the site is also a war grave and memorial to the fallen on both sides.
The visitor centre also boasts a well stocked shop which is famed for its excellent collection of books, a fully licensed restaurant and spacious rooms for corporate hire. More information on this and upcoming events, as well as opening times, can be found on the property website at www.nts.org.uk/culloden or by phoning 0844 493 2159.
Commemoration of such an event is of the upmost importance to the National Trust for Scotland. In December 2007 the Culloden Battlefield Memorial Project was successful in creating a state-of-the-art £9.6 million visitor centre as a memorial to the events that occurred on the bleak moor, just 5 miles east of Inverness. The Battlefield Visitor Centre is widely regarded as one of the best in the world and has already received many awards; most notably becoming a Scottish Tourist Board 5 Star Visitor Attraction.

Guinea Fowl With Winter Vegetable And Pearl Barley Broth
Chef’s Confidential
Now that the clocks have been turned back and the last of the leaves have blown from the trees, I think that we may be in for a long winter, so for those cosy nights in, here’s a nice winter warmer for you all. Guinea Fowl (supplied by Macbeths of Forres) is an underused bird in my opinion. It has the taste and flavour of somewhere between chicken and turkey and I think, that we all like one or the other. Ingredients - Serves Two 100 grams pearl barley 2 pints of chicken or vegetable stock ½ a Leek 1 large carrot ¼ turnip ½ an onion 8-12 baby potatoes 2 guinea fowl breasts For the Broth Cover and soak your pearl barley overnight so it absorbs some of the water which will make it easier to cook the next day. Drain the water from the barley and bring to the boil and then simmer with one pint of your chicken stock until soft and edible; if the liquid reduces, more water can be added at any time. Once the barley is soft and edible drain of the stock and put aside. For the vegetables Cut your leeks into inch-long rounds and fry gently in some vegetable oil until they are nicely coloured and soft, then put aside. Peel and cut your carrot and turnip then put into boiling water with a touch of salt and cook until soft. Take out of water and run under cold water until cool then put aside. Slice onion and sweat off in vegetable oil with salt until soft, keeping it as white as possible by adjusting your heat when needed, then put aside. Boil your potatoes in salted water until ready (roughly 10-15 mins) cool down with running cold water and put aside. To prepare the Guinea Fowl Put on a chopping board (preferably one you always use for raw meat) - you can take the bone and skin off if you want but I prefer them on. Remove any excess skin or gristle with a sharp knife, season lightly with salt (maldon salt is better and more natural than table salt)
page 16 - December 2010
Put a splash of vegetable oil into a non stick pan, put Guinea Fowl into the oil when pan is cold (this may go against what you have been told before but it is so the skin of the bird doesn’t blister and you get an all over better golden colour - believe me, I thought the Chef was crazy when I was shown this!) Gently heat the pan and once the skin is golden and crispy, turn over to the flesh side for 3-4 mins. Take out of frying pan and put onto an oven tray and cook at 180c for 8-12 mins or, if you have a temperature probe it should be over 73c, however not much more or your meat will become dry. To put dish together, put all vegetables, potatoes and barley into your chicken stock and heat until nice and hot then divide between two bowls (giving more to the cook of course!) then place the cooked Guinea Fowl on top. I have garnished mine with pea shoots (from Spey Fruit of Elgin). I hope this will keep your cockles warm and your feet toastie! We look forward to seeing you during December @ Knockomie and wish you a very Happy Festive Season and a Good New Year. Look out for Knockomie's fireworks at Hogmanay!

Police Report • P.s. hansen reported that the school holiday period was quieter than usual, but they continued to target underage drinking. she also reported that shops selling Fireworks had been advised on ages for acquiring fireworks and they would be keeping a close eye on this. • the spate of bike thefts had also ceased and two persons had been traced and reported for bike thefts. northern Constabulary were planning an official opening for nairn’s new Police station for 16th. november 2010. Matters Arising • highland Wide Development Plan C. Cllr. youngson gave a report on the joint meeting held between the three C.C.’s. he has submitted a holding response till a more detailed response has been worked through. A further meeting of the joint group is being held on thursday next and a full response will then be submitted. the meeting would also look at other ‘Joint working’ arrangements between C.C.’s and would also be arranging meetings for the town Centre re-development. • nairn bus issues C. Cllr mackie reported that a meeting had been held between nairn suburban C.C. and stagecoach m.D. for highland regarding the reduced bus service. At the meeting mr. Walker had said they would look at running the local bus service after the school run in the afternoon. Prior to Easter 2010 the service ran till 6pm, but after Easter the last bus to nairn hospital was 2.30pm. it was our understanding that this service was to be re-instated, but the new timetable published on 27th. september 2010 shows the bus going from boath Park page 18 - December 2010
/ lochloy to nairn high street at 4pm then terminating. • C. Cllr. mackie also reported that nairn Community transport had held a meeting with Forres taxis and that they had indicated they would register a bus Route covering manse Road / seabank Road / marine Road / Fishertown to nairn hospital via nairn high street. this service would run 5 times a day outwith the school run times. it is hoped that people will use this service to ensure its continuation. if it isn’t used it will probably be disbanded. • A96 Road signs & Resurfacing C. Cllr. hampson asked about the Road signs for nairn hospital, and C. Cllr. mackie reported that the sign opposite the showfield appeared to have been renewed, as it shows the hospital + A & E. there are no signs at the end of Waverley Road to indicate direction to hospital or Doctor surgery. this would be a matter for highland Council. • C. Cllr. mackie reported that on return from holiday in october he had an e-mail from bear scotland ltd. with a Consultation Certificate that they wished nsCC to sign and return. A letter dated 13/9/2010 outlining the work which started around the 13th. september was the only contact from bear scotland ltd. and in our view did not constitute “Consultation” but was merely a notification; therefore we decided it would be wrong to sign this document which was to be sent to scottish ministers indicating bear scotland ltd. had Consulted nsCC. • Re-vamped Co-op, moss-side Road C. Cllr. mackie reported that the Coop shop, moss-side Road had been given a make-over, and looked good, with an improved range of groceries, particularly the fruit and veg. however,
Date, Time & Venue of Next Meeting • next meeting will be at 7.30pm on tuesday 30th. november 2010 within nairn Academy.

several people have approached him complaining about the narrow aisles & the amount of clutter with displays and items hanging from the racks causing difficulty in movement, particularly to people with mobility issues. our fear is that somerfield (Co-op) in centre of town which is next for a make-over will end up the same. several of the people who complained to C. Cllr. mackie have indicated they are unhappy and will take their custom elsewhere. this is not what nairn wants, nor surely does the Co-op. Another example of Poor Planning Design. “Cram it in and to hell with the Customers.” • town Centre Re-Development the joint public meeting between nairn’s 3 C.C’s would be discussing this in detail and putting forward proposals to thC. many good suggestions have already come forward. they were also asking for more time to carry out consultation, that there is no need to rush to build flats, and that nairn town Centre deserves better. Planning Issues • C. Cllr. youngson gave a report on a planning application at ‘Achnashellach’, moss-side, to which we had objected, and that the applicant had now withdrawn the application. Dick met with applicant and after discussion, advised the applicant on what would be acceptable to nsCC. • We have also responded to sainsbury’s application; ‘blairlyn’, tradespark for a conservatory with no objections.

“ Parliament Blog ” As I’m sure readers will know I have been working heavily on the recent Spending Review which is responsible for looking at savings within the public sector. Throughout that time I have been acutely aware that every decision we took, every option we considered, would have a direct impact on people across the UK.
None is more painful locally than the outcome of the Strategic Defence and Security Review and the decision not to proceed with Nimrod. Whilst the right decision given the threats we now face, it leaves huge uncertainty facing RAF Kinloss. No decisions have yet been made on closures. The MoD is reviewing its bases to
see where closures need to take place and whether locations can be put to other uses, including the possibility of accommodating British troops who are returning from Germany. There are no guarantees, but it is important that a strong case is presented and listened to in government.
The families affected have served this country loyally and with distinction and it is essential that, whatever the outcome, they are given full support and assistance through this very difficult time. As the local MP for many of those people who work at RAF Kinloss, I will do all I can to help.

Every day as a Minister in the Scottish Government is different. This Tuesday began with my two year old daughter giving me a very clear instruction “Ammm” - clutching in her tiny hand one of the dvds of her favourite “Fireman Sam” which I was to put on! The first work task was an appearance before the Justice committee of the Scottish Parliament to provide our evidence on a new law which aims to help women who are victims of domestic violence. During this 90 minutes session, Nigel Don MP asked if Sheriffs should not have a measure of discretion in how to apply the law -“ after all they are not computers” he pronounced. I was able to confirm that no matter how savage the cuts may be, we have no plans, as a Government, to replace Sheriffs with computers. At about 11.45am I answered questions from four secondary schools pupils who were all studying for their highers, the justice system, and in particular how prison works, and what we should do to tackle drugs. As is often the case, I was very impressed by the children who had read up about the legal system. I am the Minister who works with Kenny MacAskill , who sits as the Cabinet Secretary for Justice. Since he was in Brussels at a Meeting of the EU Council, I had to deputise for him, at a meeting of senior staff, where I press for action on progress on a number of fronts. After a
tel: 01309 690063
quick sandwich and coffee (lukewarm!) lunch, I attended with the First Minister, John Swinney and Nicola Sturgeon at a meeting with COSLA to discuss the impending Scottish Budget. Then, again at St Andrews House, I sat in for Kenny on the Cabinet meeting. Collective responsibility means that my lips are sealed, but my advice for anyone who has serious business to do with Alex Salmond is - do your homework first to make sure that you can answer any questions he has - they tend to be good ones! By now the clock says 6.45, and I attend, somewhat late, a parliamentary reception I was to host for the Scottish Gamekeepers association. They were doing a presentation to MSPs from all parties about their work, and their concerns about what some laws may mean for their members. They are great guys rooted in the countryside - and far more knowledgeable about what actually happens on our moors and mountains than most folk. They are also a good laugh. We finish the day with for me, a rare meal out - at a pizza resteraunt just round the corner from the Parliament. Harold Wilson the Labour PM once said that a week is a long time in politics. Sometimes, a day can be fairly long too. Fergus E wing MSP SpotLight on Nairn & District
