Mountaineering in Nepal? As it was approaching the 70th anniversary of RAF Lossiemouth, the Mountaineering Club looked to find a suitable expedition to both celebrate the event and to challenge the club in both planning and execution. The Himalayas has always been the ultimate destination for the majority of aspiring climbers and was a clear choice for the members. Mera Peak, a 6400m trekking peak in the Makalu Barun National Park of Nepal, matched all of the requirements of remoteness, altitude, technical difficulty and affordability and once selected, the expedition planning began in earnest early in 2008. Out of a group of around 30 applicants a team of 12 was selected as expedition members based on their experience, ability, fitness, availability and what skills they could bring along to increase the chance of success in the endeavour. Not all of those selected had been to altitude before and so training was carried out in the Alps in the summer of 2009 to give those who required it experience in high altitude walking, rope work and crevasse rescue. The expedition set off on Thursday 15th Oct 2009 which is in the middle of the Nepalese post monsoon period and although this was the autumn and getting cold it would provide a few weeks of settled dry weather. The team travelled to Kathmandu where we met Lakpa Tenji Sherpa, our Nepalese Sirdar, who was to be our guide on the expedition. Equipment was checked and repacked for the flight to Lukla and the team’s spirits were high as we left civilisation behind as we finally headed into the mountains. Nepal is not a large country but getting around can be problematic, the locals judge distances to the next village not in miles but in days travelled, for once in the mountains there are no roads only tracks over high level passes and down low valleys. We spent 9 days trekking with our porters to get into Base Camp on the mountain, although this was ideal acclimatisation training for the summit attempt. As we progressed up the mountain the difficulties increased, the falling air pressure and night time temperatures slowing our early morning exit from the warmth of our sleeping bags and daily upward progress to little more than a crawl. Summit day fell on 2nd Nov. We left our camp at 3 am having breakfasted on porridge and noodles and it was very dark, very windy and very cold. Moving as two roped parties we climbed steadily but slowly up the mountain, the altitude and incline taking a heavy toll on our progress, till at one point I had to stop to throw up. Eventually the altitude put paid to any further progress for two of us and at 6300m we turned page 4 - January 2010

back, we were only 140m from the top. As we descended the sun rise came to warm us and our recovery started. We were soon joined by two others, one of whom had begun to feel the first effects of frostbite on his toes and so took the sensible decision to come down, only 100m from the top. As we sat in High Camp enjoying a brew, we were reunited with the rest of the team who were also driven back down by the cold, as they prepared to fix ropes for the final part of the ascent, only 40m from the top. It would seem that we had failed; we had not achieved our goal. In fact what had been the point, all that effort, months of planning and training, the worry for our families when we lost communications, not to mention the cost? Maybe we should just have stayed at home; we could have just gone for a walk up Ben Rinnes with the dogs! But we didn’t, we went to the Himalayas, we took a challenge, we stepped out of the boat, out of the comfort zone and did something amazing. Life is like that, you have to challenge yourself or you aren’t moving forward, you are dying; standing still is not an option. You don’t need to go as far as Nepal, maybe just a 5 minute jog on the beach, you never know where it might take you; the longest journey starts with the first step, but you only get out what you put in. Although you can get out a whole lot more; filled up to overflowing, packed down and topped up again. I have found it is this way with my faith as a Christian, unless I challenge it and work at it, I so easily slip and the ways of the world come flooding in and life seems to become so difficult. Nobody ever said it would be easy but everyday I give thanks for a gracious and forgiving Lord who gives me the strength for the real challenge. The truth is out there, if you are prepared to look. The next day 3 of the guys felt strong enough for a second attempt and summited easily on a beautiful, windless and sunlit morning.

Pastoral letter and Church Meetings
Pause and Reflect At this season of the year many make time and take time to pause and reflect. When King David reflected, he was able to see the guiding hand of God in all his experiences. What are you aiming for as 2010 starts? What is your personal goal for 2010? It can depend much upon your current circumstances. The writer of Psalm 92 held various certainties upon which it would be difficult to improve. He knew it was good to praise God. We praise God for what He has done, and worship Him because of who He is. The Psalmist was a worshipper who had good cause to praise the living God. High on his agenda was his decision to proclaim the love of God each morning and the faithfulness of God at night before he fell asleep. This led him to be genuinely concerned about the people around him, as he recognised so many were poor, perishing, and disappearing like grass on a hot middle eastern summer’s day. By contrast, the righteous would flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon.
The palm tree is beautiful, majestic, tall and with branches stretching upwards like hands in worship. Its deep roots search for moisture indicating a place where the weary traveller can find refreshing reviving water.
To fight the good fight, and to finish the race, it is essential to keep the faith. Do not give up. Here are positive pointers to encourage you and to enable you to go on encouraging other people throughout 2010.
The cedar grows slowly and is able to withstand all kinds of wet cold challenging conditions. These trees have an undecaying quality about them. Of course, note where they were planted in the house of the Lord. Where you are planted matters, if you want to bear fruit and make your life count for God. Are you still looking for a goal for 2010? Become an encourager. There are lots of vacancies. Not many apply for this role. God is the God of the second chance and even the third chance, but we never know when it will be our final chance!
• Be regular at worship. • Be faithful in prayer. That will take time discipline and effort. • Be in the Word of God every day. Read part of the Bible each day.
Nearing the end of his life, when Paul wrote to young Timothy, he said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”, 2 Timothy 4:7

Belly-icious! A Real New Year Treat
®
SpotLight Chef’s Confidential
Braised Belly of Pork with Herb Crust This spectacular dish regularly appears on our Chapter One menus. Belly Pork may be a cheaper cut but responds beautifully to slow gentle cooking becoming meltingly tender. You may need to order this cut in advance from your butcher. You can serve it with potato puree, lightly wilted spinach and fresh herb tagliatelle. Pork 4 tablespoons Olive Oil 1 whole belly joint about 1 kg 1 Carrot chopped 1 Onion chopped 1 Leek chopped 1 Celery Stick chopped 100ml Sherry Vinegar 200ml Soy Sauce 1.5 litres Chicken Stock Crust 100g Fresh Basil 100g Fresh Coriander 100g Fresh Bread Crumbs 100g Parmesan Heat a shallow, flameproof, cast iron casserole or deep sauté pan with lid until you feel a strong heat rising. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and brown the pork joint, turning until caramelized all over. Remove and place on a plate. Add the remaining olive oil to the pan and sauté the vegetables for about 5 minutes. Deglaze with sherry vinegar and cook until reduced to half. Then return the pork joint to the pan placing on top of the vegetables. Pour in the page 10 - January 2010
soy sauce and stock. Bring to the boil and partially cover the pan. Braise slowly at a low heat, or in the oven at 170C/gas mark 3. Cook for 2 ½ - 3 hours. Baste the pork occasionally with the pan juices, until the meat feels very tender. Lift out the meat and cut in to 4 even square pieces and set aside. Put basil, coriander, bread crumbs and parmesan in food processor and blitz until you get a crumble texture. Heap the mixture on top of each slice of pork belly and place in oven on a baking tray at 200c for 5 minutes and crust should form. Remove from oven and serve with fresh herb tagliatelle. EXTRACTS FROM THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 24TH NOVEMVBER 2009 OF NAIRN SUBURBAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Matters Arising Sandown Lands ~ The Reporter held a meeting on 16th November in the Golf View and set out the framework for the Planning Inquiry which will start on 9th. March 2010, venue to be determined, but probably the Newton Hotel. NSCC will submit a ‘precognition statement’ and will speak at the Inquiry to represent the “man in the street”. Mr. John Hart will represent Nairn Concerned Resident’s Group who will be prime speakers and once they have gathered all their evidence, we will review it and if appropriate, submit a letter of support on behalf of NSCC. A96 & Bypass update ~ Highland Council has sent in the proposed Bypass lines to Transport Scotland, with the M20 option being favoured. Once this has been accepted by Transport Scotland moves will be taken to protect the line from Development. C. Cllr John Mackie reported that the ongoing work to replace street lighting along the A96 was causing concern. Some of the ‘lamp-posts’ have been placed in the middle of the footpath instead of at the back. This is a “hazard” that has been created and Bear Scotland; Transport Scotland as well as the MSP’s have been written to, asking why this has been done. He also pointed out that the traffic islands on both sides of Somerfield’s Garage have been made narrower, which is even more dangerous than when we last carried out a survey. We had been told that the junction was to be widened at Duncan Drive and the
islands made wider, but the opposite appears to have happened. Brian Stewart also pointed out that the lamppost on the footpath immediately to the west of the exit from Somerfield’s Garage was in a driver’s field of vision. C.C. Boundaries ~ C. Cllr. John Mackie gave a report on the joint meeting held between Nairnshire C.C’s to discuss the matter. The C.C.’s will report back to their Councils and we will meet again after the Ward Forum meeting on 16th. December to hopefully agree our submissions to The Highland Council. We suggested that our boundary (Nairn) should follow the line of the Bypass (whichever is finally agreed). Highland Wide Development Plan Update ~ Our thoughts on the consultation have been submitted and we now look forward to the next phase which will cover the local plan. This part will be of more interest to us locally and we will be consulting on the issues when these come round.
Correspondence C. Cllr. John Mackie read out the various items of correspondence, and that Stagecoach have been asked for a meeting as they still appear to be blaming us for the No. 11 bus route. There are issues surrounding the recent unannounced changes to the No. 10 & 305 buses through Nairn as well. Letters have also been sent to Bear Scotland; Transport Scotland and our MSP’s re. “Nairn Street Lighting”.

Chair’s Report C.Cllr. John Mackie gave a resume on the Association of Scottish Community Councils Conference held in Scottish Parliament, Holyrood on 14th. November 2009. It was a long day and not many representatives from the north made the trip, however, it was worthwhile even to hear the problems of other C.C.’s, which were more or less the same as our own. A recent project held in Moray to promote C.C.’s resulted in a very successful election with a turnout of around 75%. One of the speakers, John Mayhew of The Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland was of great interest and NSCC intend joining this group and to arrange a meeting with them to take guidance on Sandown Lands development as we feel they can give us good advice on how to proceed. C.Cllr Mackie also apologised to Cllr Laurie Fraser, and to Mrs. Hart who had turned up for a meeting in October 2009. We had received a telephone call from Nairn Academy advising that there had been a “Double Booking” error and that we could not hold our meeting and no suitable alternative date could be found. Sincere apologies to both. Treasurers Report C. Cllr. Dick Youngson reported that we have £733.47 in our account. The next meeting of Nairn Suburban Community Council will be Tuesday 26th January 2010 at 7.30pm.
