Whatever one might think about the blend of Messrs. Cameron & Clegg’s colourful alliance, one outcome seems agreed, there will be tough times ahead as cutbacks affect real people, some of whom will be from the more vulnerable and economically disadvantaged sectors of our society. But it’s not just the less-better of that find life a bit of a struggle. The recent blockbuster movie ‘Avatar’ was brought to us in high definition 3D. Life on Avatar literally leapt out of the screen. Viewers saw a wonderful, super eco-friendly planet inhabited by blue aliens, until that is, a greedy mineral mining corporation tried to destroy much of the utopian and peaceful world. The corporation was eventually defeated. A reason you would have thought for joy and a happy ending. But life had been so perfect there that for many cinema goers the line between fact and fiction has become somewhat blurred. You see, when people watch films they sometimes engage with a bit of escapism - part of you becomes part of the film - and going by responses to the film, it seems that a lot of people are not at ease with the world which we live in. Rather than being happy that the peace
of Avatar is eventually restored, moviegoers have admitted being plagued by depression and suicidal thoughts at not being able to visit the planet Pandora, Fans have flooded internet sites with messages like this one : ‘When I woke up this morning after watching Avatar for the first time yesterday, the world seemed grey. It just seems so meaningless.’ or this ‘I still don't really see any reason to keep doing things at all. I live in a dying world.’ Such a sense of pervasive hopelessness is really quite sad. Using words similar to another thespian performance (Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Act 1 scene 4, 90):It seems that ‘Something isn’t quite right in the state’. So what can we do? The bible gives us guidance what to do if we see people in real difficulty : In the Old Testament, (before Jesus was born on earth), we are taught ‘If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered’ (Prov. 21:13). In the New Testament, when talking about looking after the sick, ensuring the hungry are fed, the needy having sufficient clothing, and even about prisoners in jail being looked after

properly, Jesus said ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did NOT do for me’. He went on to describe serious consequences for such inaction (Matthew 25:31-46). From a Christian perspective it is in all our best interests to ensure that those in need have enough, such concern reflects part of Jesus’ Character - that of being compassionate for the needy. Our local and national politicians would perhaps do well to bear in mind the guidance from the bible when they make difficult economic decisions. But if you share in that sense of hopelessness, there is a message from the very centre of the bible just for you, ‘it is far better to take refuge in God than trust in people’ , if you accept that message, to accept Jesus as you saviour and place your trust in him, then the bible repeatedly tells of the great hope that is yours, and its a wonderful free gift. If you want to more about it, I’m sure any minister in Nairn would welcome you asking them. Tim Power, Minister Nairn Baptist Church

Highland Games The origin of games and sports predates recorded history. An example of a possible early Highland games venue is at Fetteresso, although that location is technically a few miles south of the Scottish Highlands. It is reported in numerous books and Highland games programs, that King Malcolm III of Scotland, in the 11th century, summoned contestants to a foot race to the summit of Craig Choinnich (overlooking Braemar). King Malcolm created this foot race in order to find the fastest runner in the land to be his royal messenger. Some have seen in this apocryphal event the origin of today's modern Highland games. During various times of English occupation, from before the Wars of Independence to the suppression after the Jacobite wars, the men of Scotland were forbidden to bear or train with arms, in an attempt to prevent another popular Scottish uprising. Scots continued to train for war; they simply did so with the implements of war replaced with the implements of the Highland games.
There is a document from 1703 summoning the clan of the Laird of Grant, Clan Grant. They were to arrive wearing Highland coats and "also with gun, sword and dirk". From this letter, it is believed that the competitions would have included feats of arms. However, the modern Highland games are largely a Victorian invention, developed after the Highland Clearances.
the stone is put with one hand with the stone resting cradled in the neck until the moment of release. Scottish hammer throw: This event is similar to the hammer throw as seen in modern-day track and field competitions. A round metal ball (weighing 16 or 22 lb for men or 12 or 16 lb for women) is attached to the end of a shaft about 4 feet in length and made out of wood, bamboo, rattan, or plastic. With the feet in a fixed position, the hammer is whirled about one's head and thrown for distance over the shoulder. Weight throw, also known as the weight for distance event. A weight is made of metal and has a handle attached either directly or by means of a chain. The implement is thrown using one hand only. The longest throw wins. Weight over the bar, also known as weight for height. The athletes attempt to toss a 56 pound weight with an attached handle over a horizontal bar using only one hand. Each athlete is allowed three attempts at each height. Mu sic For many Highland games festival attendees, the most memorable of all the events at the games is the massing of the pipe bands. Normally held in conjunction with the opening and closing ceremonies of the games, as many as 20 or more pipe bands will march and play together It is, in fact, the music of the bagpipe which has come to symbolise music at the Games and, indeed, in Scotland itself. In addition to the massed bands, nearly all Highland games gatherings feature a wide range of piping and drumming competition, including solo piping and drumming, small group ensembles and, of course, the pipe bands themselves. In ve r n es s g am es The date of the first gathering on the banks of the River Ness by our ancestors has been lost in the mists of time and will forever remain a mystery. What we do know is that back in 1822 fundraising took place in the town to revive those ancient Games and to give the Capital of the Highlands a Highland Games that its townsfolk could be proud of.
Ev en ts Caber toss: A long tapered pine pole or log is stood upright and hoisted by the competitor who balances it vertically holding the smaller end in his hands. Then the competitor runs forward attempting to toss it in such a way that it turns end over end with the upper (larger) end striking the ground first. Competitors are judged on how closely their throws approximate the ideal 12 o'clock toss on an imaginary clock. Stone put: This event is similar to the modern-day shot put as seen in the Olympic Games. Instead of a steel shot, a large stone of variable weight is often used. The thrower is allowed to use any throwing style so long as page 8 - July 2010

Orienteering
Local Interest
Take a new direction! Pub quiz sports question. Which Moray sporting event has drawn the most participants in the last 10 years? A well-known event like the Moray Marathons is the obvious answer but surprisingly it’s orienteering. When we heard that almost 4000 runners had converged on Culbin Forest in the summer of
2007 for what we thought was a minority sport, we asked local club Moravian Orienteers to explain why so many were attracted to Moray. Orienteering has been around for a long time. It was invented in Victorian times by the Swedish army and introduced into Scotland in the 1960s. In essence it’s a cross-country race, but one with one big difference. Instead of following a set route, runners must work out for themselves how to get round the course. The idea is to visit several checkpoints along the way. At the beginner level, they are close together in easilylocated positions, mainly reached by running along tracks. At the other end of the scale they can be far apart in the remotest places, as far as possible from obvious landmarks. Courses vary between 1 Km and 18 km and can take place not only in rugged mountain and forest areas, but also in parks and towns. Even Forres has its own orienteering map! In orienteering it’s rarely the fastest runner who wins. It’s sometimes referred to as ‘cunning running’ as it’s the runner who navigates fastest who comes out on top. It’s very easy to make navigation mistakes, especially on harder courses, and the knack is to make sure your legs don’t go faster than your brain! There are thousands of areas mapped for orienteering in the UK, and Moray has some of the world’s finest orienteering terrain. Forested sand dune areas like Culbin and Roseisle provide great competition areas because the intricate contour shapes tax even the best navigators, while the going under foot is never too rough. This enables older, less agile people to take part too. Orienteering competitions are divided into 5-year age groups with courses getting shorter as you get older, so people can keep on competing right into their 80s when athletic ability might be on the wane but the mind is still just as sharp. Moray’s forests also have lots of paths that make them perfect for beginner-level page 10 - July 2010
courses. Every event lays on courses for the very young, and competitive orienteering can start as young as age 7 or 8. The Culbin event in 2007 was part of a 6-Day festival based in Grantown on Spey, attracting over 1000 overseas competitors as well as 2500 Brits. In 2008 the forest hosted the British Championships where another 2000 runners descended on the tiny village of Kintessack. Anyone can take part, whatever the level of event, and this one was no exception where young local children were able to line up alongside elite national champions whose courses shared the same area. Lately there’s been a boom in adventure running for which navigation at speed is a fundamental part. Local schools have recently discovered orienteering and many have their own school maps. The area’s Active Schools co-ordinators stage inter-school events where hundreds of children have learned to map read in an exciting and active way. All of Moray’s schools come together at Gordonstoun every April for an annual schools festival and this year youngsters can also look forward to a special competition. On June 13th, Culbin Forest will be the venue for the first ever Moray and Highland Junior Orienteering Championships. It’s aimed at novices who have discovered the sport at school, and anyone aged 16 or under on the day can take part. With entry classes for boys and girls in 2-year categories from under 11
upwards, the event will be combined with a mainstream competition open to anyone. This should be an exciting chance for budding adventure runners to take part in a big event at Scottish Orienteering’s Hampden Park! With the 2-yearly Scottish 6-Day Orienteering Festival returning to the Moray Coast in August 2013 it’s the perfect place to start getting in training for what might be Moray’s biggest sporting event of the next decade! Moravian Orienteers stage at least one local event every month. They also organise training sessions and enter teams in races further afield. New members are always welcome so if adventure running Moravian style sounds like your kind of thing you can find more information on their web site w w w. m o r a v i a n o r i e n t e e r i n g . o r g

Barbecue Sauce Spare Ribs
Chef’s Confidential
Ingred ients 1.8kg pork spare ribs 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, peeled and chopped 4 clove garlic, crushed 2 red chillies, finely chopped 2 tsp fennel seeds, crushed 115g dark brown sugar 100ml dark soy sauce 600ml tomato ketchup black pepper Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4. Place the spare ribs on a baking sheet and roast for 25-30 minutes until cooked through.
While the ribs are cooking heat the olive oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and garlic and fry until fragrant. Add the chilli, fennel seeds and sugar and cook, stirring often, until sugar melted. Add the soy sauce and tomato ketchup. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper. Bring to the boil and simmer for around 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Once the ribs have cooked through, remove them from the oven and brush liberally with half the barbecue sauce, leaving half for later. Return the ribs to the oven and cook for a further 10 minutes to glaze the ribs. Serve with the remaining barbecue sauce on the side. To enjoy these ribs at a barbecue, follow the recipe as above the end of step two. Brush the ribs with barbecue sauce and cook over a preheated barbecue until glazed, then serve. Happy Cooking! Council News
EXTRACTS FROM THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF TUESDAY 25TH MAY 2010 OF NAIRN SUBURBAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Police Report P.C. James Swan gave an update on Policing in Nairn and said it has been relatively quiet. He was asked about patrols at Nairn Museum area over weekends as there appeared to be large quantities of bottles/cans in that area. He assured the meeting that regular patrols were carried out in the area and drink continued to be confiscated from underage drinkers.
Matters Arising • THC Budget Cuts ~ following a meeting of NSCC Cllrs. on 4/5/2010 the proposal was put forward to look at an “Across the Board” percentage cut. This generated a lot of discussion which resulted in the view that we could only discuss Budget Cuts for Nairnshire and Nairn if we knew what Nairn’s Budget allocation was, and how it was spread across the various services. This would be the same for all areas of Highland. As a result a “F.O.I.” request has been submitted by Cllr. John Hart. • Sandown Lands update ~ Deveron Highland had 6 weeks in which to appeal against the reporters finding. NSCC were writing to THC Planning Department and the local elected members requesting a meeting to discuss how we take Sandown forward. Any developments will be reported at future meetings. • Community Council Boundary Consultations ~ Cllr. J. Mackie reported that little was being done towards resolving the Nairn Single C.C. issue. We need to be able to reach every household in Nairn asking their views; otherwise, the consultation is flawed. If everyone is page 16 - July 2010
given the opportunity to respond, then any response, no matter how small could be taken as the feelings of the Community. If people are not given that opportunity then we cannot say what the Community feels about the situation. Cllr. J. Mackie will approach the Ward Manager again about the matter. A letter would be circulated to households in Delnies area pointing out that they were still classed as Cawdor C.C. and that if they wished to comment they should write/e-mail THC by end of June 2010. • Community Care Consultation ~ Dr. Alastair Noble gave a resume on the Consultation documents and gave everyone a copy of “Why the Cost Cube”. The meeting also learned that NCCF were carrying out meetings with user groups to feed back responses, and it was felt that user groups were a better avenue for the consultation. • Local Bus Issues ~ Cllr. John Mackie informed the meeting that our local Bus has been further eroded with the withdrawal of the School Run, both morning and afternoon to Millbank and Rosebank Primaries, and that practically no notification had been given on the withdrawal of this service by Stagecoach or THC. Furthermore the local bus to Tradespark/Achareidh stopped after 2.35pm. The question was what happens after July 2010 when both Doctor Surgeries move to Nairn Hospital? THC Transport and Stagecoach were to be asked to meet with NSCC, and the letter copied to Elected members; MSP’s, Transport Scotland to keep them informed of tel: 01309 690063
out disquiet on this issue.
Treasurer’s Report Comm. Cllr. Dick Youngson reported that we currently have a bank balance of £224.60. 2009 Accounts are almost complete and once audited we’d submit to THC and hopefully by August would receive our Funding for 2010/2011.
Oral or Tabled Reports from Local Authority Councillors Cllr Laurie Fraser was unable to report on Bear Scotland’s resurfacing work which had been due on A96 between Tradespark Road & Delnies during May 2010. [Another worthless promise that has fallen by the way-side.] Planning Issues Comm. Cllr. Dick Youngson reported that there has been very little planning application for our area. However, we were working with Nairn River C.C. who were objecting to a Planning Application at the Manor, Cawdor Road, and we have agreed to support them. We will also contact Nairn West C.C. about Corsee Planning Application. Discussion moved onto the Sandown Lands and what would be acceptable for that area. Date, Time & Venue of Next Meeting NSCC next meeting would be on Tuesday 29th. June 2010 at 7.30pm in Nairn Academy. A Meeting of Nairn Ward Forum on Council Budget Cuts would be held on 30th. June 2010; Nairnshire C.C.’s were to meet on Tuesday 1st. June 2010 @ 7pm in Nairn Community Centre SpotLight - Nairn and District

Millbuies Loch
SpotLight
Local Walks
Fogwatt, Elgin INTRODUCTION: Millbuies Loch was created by the damming of streams to provide angling facilities on the loch. Moray District Council took over the estate in 1975 and the fishing was extended to the public.
THE ROUTE & FEATURES OF INTEREST: Many improvements were made to the estate over the years, and now Millbuies offers a variety of family orientated activities. There is a large grass area for play with picnic tables and barbecue points, a large car park and toilet facilities and also a feeding station for birds of many types. The featured path around the loch is hard aggregate with various other paths leading off to scenic
views. A large variety of rhododendrons and trees have been planted and this attracts wildlife, from red squirrels feeding at the station to roe deer, badger, rabbit and if you are quiet and lucky, pine martin. On the loch there is mallard, tufted duck, moorhen and swan. In the loch, which is stocked with rainbow trout, you can hire a boat for flyfishing. This is an excellent outdoor environment to be enjoyed by the whole family. WALK GRADE: Easy A generally flat level path with good surfaces of less than two miles distance. MILEAGE: 1.5 Miles ESTIMATED WALKING TIME: 1 Hour
