Pastoral letter and Church Meetings
Being a minister in Nairn certainly brings its joys and sorrows. Beyond the privilege of walking beside people in their personal struggles and successes the greatest challenge surely involves the nurturing and growing of faith in the Nairn community. And this is not easy. Even in the Highlands, Churches and ministers can no longer take for granted that people want to hear what the churches have to say, never mind listening to the story of the Christian faith and Jesus. But I personally don’t see this negatively. If anything this poses an enormous opportunity for people of faith to rethink how they engage with their community and with their neighbours. This kind of thinking has to be made at the deepest level because collectively as someone in town said to me recently, “the church has lost its credibility”. So how do churches rediscover how to be credible in their community? Can I suggest three ways? Firstly Churches have to learn to work together. They have to be ecumenical. Ecumenism is about different branches of the Church in Scotland, working
together locally and in unity as part of a global Christian movement. Ecumenism springs up naturally in our own back yards. It is not just people talking about how the churches can come together, although that is important. It is mainly about Christians living in local communities discovering that there is more that unites us than divides us. By working together, we can show that it is possible that faith can bring something to the community whether people believe or not. Working together in the service of others can bring hope to any community Secondly, Churches have to learn to be inclusive and welcoming. In recent months St Ninian’s church has opened its doors every day to let people in. This generous act says it all- the church is open to everyone in our community, no matter their class, gender, ethnicity, age, or sexual orientation. The church is here to love and welcome and accept people in all their circumstances because life and relationships can be messy and it’s not our duty to give people a hard time but instead its our duty to help anyone in need in Jesus name.

Finally, church people have to learn again how to be relational. By this I mean people who have faith need to constantly re-express their faith and worship in ways that meet the needs of the community and individuals. This means rather than looking inwards and clinging rigidly to traditional patterns of church life people need to reconnect with those around them differently. Faith can be expressed in sport, in leisure classes, shopping at work and in the pub. It is not just a Sunday event, its surely best expressed in the quality of our relationships and our attitudes to others. As it says in the bible: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Mathew 5 v14-16 Rev. Herb and Parmesan Crusted Salmon with Salsa Verde
Chef’s Confidential
With the fishing season well and truly here and Salmon being caught in the rivers of Speyside, what better dish to signal the start of what we hope will be a warm Summer. At Knockomie we have revitalised our lunch menus and this Herb Crusted Salmon is proving a real favourite. Throughout May we are offering a 2 course lunch menu for just £7.95 per person. What are you waiting for!
Serves 4 25grm finely grated fresh parmesan 2 x tablespoons finely chopped parsley 50 grm Fine Wholemeal Breadcrumbs Salt and freshly Ground Pepper 4 x 180grm Boneless, skinless Salmon Fillets
Whilst the salmon is cooking make the Salsa Verde. Place the capers, gherkins, parsley, basil and mint in to a food processor and whiz until all finely chopped.
Salsa Verde Add the mustard and vinegar and whiz again. 2 x dessert spoon capers 2 x dessert spoon pickled gherkins ½ x 35grm pack of curly or flat leaf parsley 1 x generous bunch picked basil leaves 1 x generous bunch of picked mint leaves 2 x dessert spoon Dijon Mustard 2 x tablespoon White wine vinegar 150ml Olive oil Salt and freshly Ground Pepper
Add the salt and pepper to taste and you're done! The great thing about Salsa Verde is that you can store in an sealed jar in the fridge and it will keep for a couple of weeks. It's great with chicken and white fish too!
Mix the parmesan, chopped parsley and breadcrumbs together. Season with the salt and pepper.
Once the salmon is cooked remove from the oven and serve with crushed new potatoes and a crisp salad.
Whilst the mixer is running gradually drizzle the olive oil in to the mixture until all added.
Place the mixture on a large plate or tray. Coat the salmon fillets entirely in the mixture and place on a lightly oiled baking tray. Place in the oven and cook at 180̊ C for 20minutes.

Matters Arising a) sandown lands. nothing new to add b) a96 Road works at Duncan Drive; Jm Commented that in 2003-2004 BeaR had told him that there would be no traffic lights or roundabout at the moss-side road or Duncan Drive junction that was the last we heard. Cllr liz macDonald said that the road works and installation of traffic lights on the a96 through nairn were imposed by traffic scotland as a response to the sainsbury’s development. as it’s a trunk road it has nothing to do with the local authority. the meeting expressed doubt as to whether 8 sets of lights could be satisfactorily sequenced to avoid serious holdups. CCllr a noble commented that this is yet another reason why there is a complete breakdown of trust between the public and the planning authorities. c) Community Council Consultation. the three nairn CCs need to have a meeting with William gilfillan. d) town Centre Re-Development. again for the final brief. there are still question marks surrounding the old Bus garage, Petrol station and Regal Bar. Cllr g marsdon added community involvement has been important in moving this whole process forward. e) Recycling. Jm We are still looking for a suitable site, possibly as part of the sandown Park? Cllr macDonald hoped that something regarding the sandown lands may come to light at the CC forum. Cllr marsdon it might be a idea to have a meeting on the Parkland prior to the forum meeting. Consultations scottish Police forces and neighbourhood watch. Jm we should be concentrating on local issues not national ones. Chair’s Report nairn is getting busier and it’s getting more challenging for Community Councils. Cllr macDonald suggested a period of joint meetings to try out how a single CC might function. Des scholls added with the increased workload it seems daft that three separate groups are often giving up their time reproducing the same work.

Treasurer’s Report Planning Matters Sainsbury’s South of Nairn Development CCllr D youngson reported that we £641.37 in funds. the old lodgehill Clinic is about to be demolished. there is to be a preplanning meeting at the site on the12th april. the developers of the s nairn Dev. have satisfied all of the concerns we had so we have no real grounds to object to this development. gar garden den So much mor more e than just a Gar Garden den Centr Centre e We area W e moved to the Highland ar ea some 4 years ago now nature e of things took a and getting used to the rural natur while. Whilst we had always lived in country locations we from ‘Where e its at never seemed far fr om a hub of activity. ‘Wher different action’ is dif ferent when you have a family and we had previously morning pr eviously liked to occasionally take a mor ning or an afternoon around garden centre. after noon to wander ar ound a gar den centr e. A friend rrecently ecently suggested that we tried out Simpsons Gar den Centr e just outside of Inver ness and although Garden Centre Inverness we had hear d of it we hadn’t actually been befor e so heard before we had no idea what to expect. W ell we wer e certainly Well were eally pleasant surprise. Simpsons is certainly mor e in for a rreally more den centr e. Y es you can buy everything than just a gar garden centre. Yes that you would nor mally expect to buy in a garden garden normally centr e (in fact - their range of gar den pr oducts was centre garden products huge!) but it was the other things that rreally eally ‘W owed’ us. ‘Wowed’ First of all the rrestaurant estaurant - a rreally eally smart and sophistisophisticated rrestaurant estaurant and cafe ar ea that was absolutely area buzzing when we wer e there there and (we couldn’t believe it were a baby grand piano playing in the background background apparantly ther e is live music during the day on both there Satur days and Sundays). The views fr om the windows Saturdays from over the Inver ness, the Black Isle and beyond wer e Inverness, were simply stunning! On the way to the rrestaurant estaurant you ar e led thr ough a are through pleasantly laid out ‘r etail ar ea’ which includes a fully ‘retail area’ fledged Florist and a concession fr om a local clothes from shop! In the rretail etail ar ea the list of what you can buy is area simply stunning - books, gifts, gar den equipment and garden per haps one of the lar gest collection of pots that I have perhaps largest seen in a long while! All in all we spent about 3 hours in the centr e and centre finished up with a lunch which for all the family (four in total) came to £22.50 including drinks (this is not a set deal). The food was wonder fully pr esented and (I was wonderfully presented assur ed) all made fr esh on the day using local pr oduce. assured) fresh produce. On the way out we noticed that Simpsons won ‘Gar den ‘Garden Centr e of the year 2010’ for all of Scotland - we‘r e not Centre we‘re surprised! So what’s my ver dict? A gr eat mor ning out - just the verdict? great morning place to go befor e doing the TTesco esco run! before

Baxters Speyside Hame! “Pate or Royal Game?” Was the question I was asked at a friend’s home in Hong Kong! “…the Soup’s Baxters’’ I was informed. A surreal question 7,000 miles from my home in Elgin! Like being offered Ostrich burgers in Elgin High Street…. not what you expect! Since then, I have been aware of how widespread the Baxters’ brand is. In my opinion Scotland’s second largest export! A brand I am proud to say is 100% Scottish. The Baxters story began in 1868 when, with a little encouragement, George Baxter borrowed £100 from an uncle and other relatives, and opened a small grocery shop in Fochabers. George's wife, Margaret, started making jams and jellies in the back of the shop and once her jams had found their way to Gordon Castle, their superb quality ensured that they swiftly became popular with the Duke's friends up and down the land. From then until now Baxters has become a household name, sold in over 150 countries world wide and still growing. A recent visit to Baxters with my family was a very enjoyable day out. My initial thought when it was suggested was…”I don’t want to traipse around a food factory!” How wrong was I! The Old Shop visit was a step back in time to the Victorian era, exploring George Baxters original 19th century grocery shop. This leisurely wander through time was with audio, which had the kids engrossed for ages! The visit through the main shop was a delight with all the Baxters’ goodies on display and we couldn’t help buying our favourite Baxters soups and preserves. “I’m starving!” was the next cry. The smell of the freshly made pancakes from the self-service restaurant was irresistible! A fantastic choice of hot and cold meals was on offer with Blackboard Specials changed daily. This spacious restaurant is family-friendly with great facilities for the disabled.
24
To walk off the scrumptious meal, we took the Baxters half hour nature walk beside the Spey. I would highly recommend this trail and if the weather is warmer you should try having a picnic by the river! My visit to the home of Baxters will not be my last as the friendly and attentive staff helped make this visit a very enjoyable day!

The Elgin Marbles – why Elgin? Elgin Museum continues to receive the occasional tourist expecting to find the “Elgin marbles”, probably having by-passed their location in London. We even used to have bags of children’s marbles, available as a consolation prize. What are the “Elgin marbles”? They are the marble architectural sculptures brought to Britain by Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, from the temple, the Parthenon, built on the Acropolis of Athens between 447 and 438 BC. The building had survived largely intact until 1687; it then suffered an explosion in a bombardment when in use as a gunpowder store, after which the sculptures suffered from ongoing damage and piecemeal sale. In 1799, Elgin became ambassador to Constantinople (Istanbul), capital of the Ottoman Empire, which then included most of Greece. As a personal gesture, in return for a diplomatic intervention, the local authorities allowed him to record the remaining monuments, and later to allow their embarkation for Britain. The sculptures survived the sinking of the “Mentor” and Elgin subsequently sold them to the British Museum, where, controversially, they remain. The Scottish sculptor, John Henning (1771 – 1851) saw the marbles soon after they arrived in Britain and was so impressed that he obtained permission to draw and make models of them. Using earlier drawings to help him work out the order of the procession depicted in the frieze, Henning carved miniature impressions in slate, from which casts were made in white plaster. Classical sculpture and casts like these became immensely popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. By a quirk of fate, Elgin Museum has a set of
these 2” by 6” casts on display. Originally gifted to the Museum by Louise, Countess of Seafield in 1886, they disappeared to resurface in someone’s attic in 2003! Also, on loan from the present Earl of Elgin, we have two of John Henning’s original drawings, which show the power and beauty of the horses in the original sculptures. Returning to the original question, why did a British diplomat, whose main residence was Broom Hall in Fife, have the title 7th Earl of Elgin? For a closer geographical link, we can go to Kinloss Abbey, ten miles west of Elgin. Edward Bruce, the father of the 1st Earl, was in 1583 both parson of Torie, in Fife, and associated with the abbey of Kinloss. He became abbot, and later Lord Bruce of Kinloss when Kinloss became a temporal lordship and barony in 1604. It was his third son, Thomas who became 1st Earl of Elgin in 1633, probably as a reward from King Charles I for contributing to the pomp of his coronation in Scotland. A fortnight later, Thomas is reputed to have provided a more significant service, rescuing the King from drowning when their pinnace capsized in a gust of wind on the crossing homeward from Burntisland to Leith. Thomas lived almost entirely in England. It is said that, as all the cities and counties around the Bruce country of the upper Firth of Forth had already been used for titles, Thomas wrote to friends in Scotland, and the great cathedral city of Elgin, not far from his considerable land holdings of Kinloss, was suggested. As Thomas said, “The English will be able to pronounce it!” Contributed by Elgin Museum, now open for the season, Mon-Fri 10-5, Sat 11-4.

Carpet Cleaning Hints & Tips from the Team at Can-Do Services All the tips are tried and tested and if you need any further help please call the team on the numbers below. We hope that you enjoy the feature and find it useful!
1. Hairspray - lightly spray the affected area with hairspray, then gently working in small circles rub the area with a damp cloth. Two to three treatments maybe required.
I had a friend on Facebook this month ask me about crayon marks that his son had made on their beautifully painted cream walls at home and how to go about removing it. With Easter just passed here are three simple remedies to an often frustrating toddler situation.
2. Toothpaste - Dab a small amount of toothpaste on a cloth and gently work into mark on the wall. Wipe away any residue with a damp cloth. 3. Brasso - Apply as per toothpaste but in very small quantities. And remember not to rub too hard as the paint will come off the wall.
For any stain removal tips please call or visit our new website at www.can-doservices.co.uk

Climbing Ben Aigan
INTRODUCTION: Ben Aigan lies to the east of Rothes, the north east of Craigellachie and to the east of the River Spey which flows along the foot of its western and northern slopes. Rising to a height of 471m (1546 feet) and extensively forested apart from the summit cone, the top of Ben Aigan provides magnificent views over Speyside, south to Ben Rinnes, and away to the north over the Moray Firth to the hills of Sutherland OTHER INFORMATION: Climbing Ben Aigan as with most hills in Scotland, there are several possible routes to the summit. The route featured on the map starts at a Forestry Commission car
park near Auchlunkart just off the A95 Craigellachie to Keith road. Follow forest roads to the top of the hill. It is also possible, and perhaps more interesting, to climb the hill using the disused forest road which strikes uphill from west of Tanzie (see map). There is very limited parking here, at a Forestry Commission barrier. SIGNAGE: Partly Signed WARNING: Ben Aigan has several dedicated mountain bike trails where bikes will be travelling at speed and not necessarily expecting pedestrians. As a walker, you are advised to avoid these routes.
