Here at SpotLight, we are constantly looking at providing both useful and interesting information for our readers and following a number of suggestions we are, this month, introducing a regular new book feature - The Monthly Book Club. For the feature we have tried to pick a good cross section of book types which are mostly new releases (we are fortunate to have an ex librarian on our staff to help us with the selections!). Most of the books listed will be available in print and on Kindle.
Words by the Wayside “Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord: for men abhorred the offering of the Lord.” (1st Samuel 2:17)
Reader, God so loved you, that He offered up on Calvary’s Cross His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, that if you would believe on Him, you should not perish. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn you, but that you through Him might be saved. Refuse no longer God’s offering for your sins. Jesus Christ can make you whole, He is The Gift of God.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings The most important day!
What day in April will be the most important one for you this year? This might seem like a very broad question to ask you. Still, you might have a birthday, or an anniversary, or there may be some other significant occasion to celebrate in April. For instance, those in Northern Ireland might say 10th April when the violence in Northern Ireland came to an end because of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Those in South Africa might say 26th April when Multiracial elections took place in 1994. You can see there can be many different answers to the same question. Personally, the 1st April will be the most important day in April for me this year. After all, Resurrection Sunday (Easter Sunday) will be on the 1st April. At the same time, many of my Christian friends would probably give you the same answer. Yet, you might wonder why Christians would want to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ nearly 2000 years later. Of course, the life of Jesus baffles some people because He might seem a bit distant from their everyday life. But if people would spend time with the
Jesus presented to us in the four Gospels - they might change their opinion about Him. The Apostle John tells us, ‘And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us… (John 1:14). In other words, Jesus understands our deepest needs because He became one of us. So, why is it important for us to see the real Jesus in the four Gospels? It is important because the Old Testament Scripture prophecy about His birth, His ministry, His death and His resurrection. I do not know about you but that gives me a great deal of hope. It gives me hope for the present because I know that Jesus loved me so much that He was willing to die for me. Undoubtedly, there is so much more to discover about Jesus if we take the time to find out about Him. For example, Jesus can set people free from addictions; He is able to heal broken hearts; He is able to guide us when we need direction - and He even answers our prayers. In fact, the list of what Jesus can do is not exhaustive but it is inexhaustible. I take great comfort knowing that Jesus has forgiven all my sins and so much more than I can even imagine…

Therefore, what could be more important than someone who can do all that? It is worth taking the time to find out about Jesus rather than listening to the misleading opinions of those who do not really know Jesus. So, be encouraged to spend time with this Jesus who rose from the dead. He is real, personal, loving, caring, understanding, compassionate, and He speaks the truth. What is stopping you from experiencing Him for yourself? The Bible says in Psalm 14:1, the fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ Yet, those who say there is no God can only offer empty words which offers you no hope. If we honestly spend time with Jesus, then we will meet Him. The choice is yours to make, so let the 1st April be the most important day for you this year! Parliament Blog & Tide Times This year marks 100 years since some women got the vote. Nicola Sturgeon (our female first Minister who appointed a gender balanced cabinet) led a debate in Holyrood to mark the occasion. A lot has changed in 100 years, and for that I am truly thankful. But while we have made some bold changes already, let’s not be complacent, or take progress for granted. With that in mind, I am glad to see the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress. We need concerted, deliberate action if we are going to achieve gender equality. Research shows that gender parity is over 200 years away. Women should not have to wait this long for equality, we deserve it now.
In February, I announced a new loan scheme for 2016 LFASS payments to ensure that farmers and crofters, including here in Moray, get 90% of their entitlement as early as possible. I am aware that upland and hill farmers are often the ones working at the margins and so need and deserve our support the most. Offer letters will be received soon and I encourage people who are eligible to apply. Given how challenging life is right now – with weather, inflation, austerity, even delivery charges still higher for people here than elsewhere in the UK I and my government colleagues are totally focused on doing all we can to ease the strain. The income tax measures passed as part of this year’s budget mean that 70% of people will pay less income tax than they do now with over half of all Scottish taxpayers paying less than people earning similar amounts who live elsewhere in the UK. The extra £219 million our tax measures will raise will be spent on vital public services. The budget also delivers an additional £400 million for our NHS, and funds towards building 50,000 additional homes across the country and near double free early learning and childcare by 2020. And the reforms we are taking forward on business rates are aiming to make Scotland the best place to do business in the UK. These are challenging times, not least in terms of cuts by the UK Government to the overall Scottish budget. We must do all we can with what we have to invest in what matters to people, and to help people too do more for their families and businesses.

Across the country, staff and in volunteers community transport schemes provide valuable services that are life lines to many folk. I was delighted to be able to meet the staff at Badenoch Community transport recently and hear firsthand about the work they do in their community. The scheme is run by the community to meet the individual needs of people who cannot get out and about. It was great to hear in detail about the range of services they provide across Badenoch & Strathspey – from weekly shopping trips in their community car service to taking groups to supper and music clubs. With this busy schedule, 125 volunteer drivers and 1,550 clients it is no wonder they clock up 6000 trips a year. I was interested to learn about the opportunities they have for volunteers and their plans for the coming years. Their work linking school pupils and senior citizens was a fantastic example of involving everyone in the community and bringing generations together

clean-up the grass. The price is probably similar too.
The main task of the off-season is scarifying out moss and thatch, and it is best done either at the end of a season (autumn) or just before a new season starts (spring). Some enthusiasts do it twice ! The general advice is don’t scarify once the grass has started growing. New grass in the spring will be damaged by the rather traumatic and invasive scarification process.

pril tends to be the month when everything in the garden starts to wake up, and on the first of the sunny days my phone starts to ring off the hook and it’ll be November before I know it! I love it though, this time of year, especially so as I’ve been doing lots of work in my own garden that will start to show itself soon enough – plants and trees that have gone in ‘bare root’ will suddenly burst into life, belying their straggly appearance when they arrived in cardboard boxes a couple of months ago! I’ll be looking to spend some time in the garden before the spring growth spurt kicks in (usually some time in May, and it lasts about 6-8 weeks). During the spring growth spurt, you have to work hard to stand still sometimes, so a bit of extra effort now will pay dividends.
Do gently hoe over your borders to disrupt any emerging weeds under the soil. Do dig well-rotted horse or cow manure into your beds. Do cut your lawn if it needs it, but just a light cut for the first one. Do prune Forsythia sp. once it has finished flowering. Do scarify your lawn with a spring-tine rake for smaller areas, or hire a machine for larger areas. Do add a lawn feed to your grass. Do treat decks and hard surfaces for moss.
26
Don’t apply lawn mosskiller by hand, however careful you are it will create ugly black streaks that take ages to recover. Use a spreader. Don’t go overboard with your lawn feed if you have large areas of grass and no time to cut it. I only ever use an autumn feed on my lawn which has a bit less nitrogen in. Don’t forget to top-dress plant pots – skim a bit of old compost away, and add some new compost. Don’t forget to start spraying roses to help keep pests away. You can get organic sprays that use things like garlic. Once the overnight temperatures are over 6C, the grass will start growing in earnest, so be sure your mower is working nicely. Mow at least once a fortnight to prevent weeds setting seed. If you do scarify, as advised above, don’t mow it for a few days afterwards as it is a stressful process for the grass.
I’LL BE ADDING SOME MORE BLOG ARTICLES OVER THE COMING WEEKS ABOUT HOW TO DO VARIOUS JOBS IN THE GARDEN, SO KEEP AN EYE ON MY WEBSITE AT WWW.THEMOUNTAINGARDENER.CO.UK. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, OR IDEAS FOR USEFUL THINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ ABOUT HERE, OR ON MY BLOG, THEN JUST DROP ME A LINE.

NOT JUST ANOTHER ICE-CREAM SHOP Portsoy Ice-cream shop is in the heart of Portsoy Village, Banffshire
W
e heard about this amazing ice-cream shop from a few people so we decided to go check it out for ourselves. When we arrived we noticed that there was a lovely seating area, which was perfect, as the weather was not great outside and so we decided to sit in. We went over to the counter to have a look and noticed the huge variety of ice-creams, hot and cold sauces, lots of different toppings and the amount of different ways you can have your ice-cream. What stood out for me were the waffles, especially the Bubble Waffles. After much thought we decided to have the Sharing Platter which consists of 6 scoops of ice-cream (your own choice), two hot sauces, frozen berries, marshmallows and waffles. The Sharing Platter definitely had more than enough on it for two people with six different ice-creams. We chose Bubblegum, Creme Egg, After Eight, Honeycomb, Vanilla and Raspberry Ripple, underneath which, were the waffles with chocolate sauce. This was accompanied on the side by Salted Caramel hot sauce, Fudge hot sauce, and marshmallows. We also wanted to try the Bubble Waffle which looked amazing – this has a scoop of ice-cream, hot sauce with fudge and marshmallow toppings. The Bubble Waffle was a delight to eat and it was so good I ate most of it. Our visit to the Portsoy Ice-Cream shop was certainly a treat and I will be going again very soon. I now know why people
talk about this ice-cream shop and say it's different from the rest. Both the ice-cream and waffles are home made, the staff are so friendly and very helpful. If you would like to take ice-cream home they offer a selection box which has 16 scoops of your choice, the box can keep the ice-cream perfect for 1.5 hours of travel. The Portsoy Ice-Cream shop does even more offering hot chocolate, coffee, tea and milkshakes. They also cater for birthdays, weddings and lots of other different types of events. There are gifts in the shop and selections of jam, marmalade and chutney. It really is an amazing place to visit and a treat for all the family, I will definitely be recommending the Portsoy Ice-Cream Shop. After your ice-cream there is so much more to explore in Portsoy. Simnel Cake This spiced fruit cake has a layer of marzipan and another one on top. Originally the cake was baked by girls in service to take home with them on Mothering Sunday. It is now more traditional to have Simnel Cake at Easter time.
Ingredients: 100g glace cherries 500g mixed dried fruit 175g soft butter (unsalted) 175g caster sugar zest of 1 lemon 225g plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground ginger 25g ground almonds 3 eggs 2 tablespoons milk 1 kg yellow marzipan Icing sugar (for rolling marzipan) 1 tablespoon apricot jam (melted) 1 egg white
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C. Grease and line both the bottom and sides of a 20cm cake tin with a double layer of brown baking paper.
2. Chop the cherries finely and mix them with the rest of the dried fruit. Cream the butter and sugar until pale and soft (using an electric mixer is easiest), add the lemon zest.
3. Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger and ground almonds together into a bowl. Add 1 of the eggs to the creamed butter mixture along with 2 tablespoons of the flour mixture, then beat in the remaining eggs in the same way. Beat in the rest of the dry ingredients, and then the milk. Finally fold in the fruit.
4. With a small amount of icing sugar lightly dust a worktop space and then roll out just less than half of the marzipan into a circle (the size of the tin) which will fit in the middle of the cake.
5. Tip half of the cake mixture into the tin and smooth down. Place the marzipan circle on top of it. Spread the rest of the cake mixture into the tin on top of the marzipan and level. Bake for about half an hour and then lower the oven temperature to 150°C for another hour and a half or until the cake has risen and is firm on top. Allow the cake to cool completely on a rack before removing it from the tin.
Enjoy!

Reader, what have you done with Jesus which is called Christ? Do you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing? And yet do you not know if you reject the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you are wretched, and miserable and poor and blind and naked. It is appointed unto you once to die and after this your judgment: what will you do with Jesus?
