Pastoral Letter & Church Meetings Friendship! What is friendship? Recently, I spoke to an American friend who told me that they have a National Friendship Day in August. Personally, I believe friends are very important, but who are they? And what elements are needed for friendships to be genuine? Of course, friendship is much more than having each other in your Facebook list. Maybe we could list some important characteristics like affection, loyalty, love, respect, trust, or something else. If we choose our friends based only on what they have to offer, then we will rarely discover the blessings of genuine friendship. In fact, the Apostle Paul once made a radical statement when he said, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3). If we valued our friends’ needs above our own, then we might be on our way to loving like Jesus! Yet how many would be prepared to go that far with their friendships?
What does the Bible say about friendships? The Bible is not silent when it comes to the subject of friendship because it uses the word ‘friend’ more than ninety times. For example, Abraham is called the ‘friend of God’ because of the intimacy he had with God. And there are many encouraging stories of people who had amazing friendships like Ruth and Naomi or David and Jonathan. If we are easily offended or hold on to bitterness, then we will have a hard time making friends because no-one is perfect. But there are times when we also have to say the difficult things our friends need to hear. Therefore, a true friend will tell us when we are wrong (see Proverbs 27: 6). However, we must always take a truthful look at ourselves, which is not always easy! What a friend we have in Jesus! Now a well-known hymn ‘What a friend we have in Jesus’ has touched countless lives since the nineteenth century. The man, who wrote it, Joseph Scriven, had learned that he could take

his needs to Jesus in prayer. After all, this was a man whose fiancée drowned the day before their wedding. Yet he said, ‘We should never be discouraged…’ because we have a Saviour who will all our sorrows share. Yes, Jesus is the finest example of a true friend because His love for us is sacrificial, and it is never selfish. Jesus once said, “Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13). In fact, Jesus demonstrated His love for us when He laid down His life on the cross. Nevertheless Jesus also said, “You are my friends, if you do what I command.” (John 15: 14). In other words, we must obey, believe, repent, and confess that Jesus is Lord! Have you done these things because Jesus wants to be your friend?

7. PLANNING ISSUES i) TOWN CENTRE As agreed at the previous meeting, BS had written to the Council seeking assurances that the old Victorian stone buildings (former Police Station/Social Work office and former Tourist office etc) would not be demolished. Former Convenor Sandy Park had replied that they would be retained, taken off the market and brought back into use. Cllr MacAulay confirmed that a feasibility study is being carried out on the King Street Buildings to see what these buildings could be used for and that both he and Cllr Liz Macdonald would like them taken off the market as soon as possible. BS recalled that in earlier public meetings with Council planners, the development brief for the town centre had been described as an interim one essentially to provide planning guidance to the Co-op. Officials had given assurances that, as required by national guidelines, a proper integrated masterplan for the whole area including bus station and library car park would be included in the new local (Inner Moray Firth) plan. Since then however, the Council-owned land had been put up separately for sale; the demolition contract had been awarded; and a planning application approved for the bus garage site. Meanwhile the draft IMFLDP had been published for consultation. There was no sign in that draft of a plan for the town centre. BS called on elected Councillors to ensure that a suitable draft masterplan for the regeneration of the town centre was produced by officials, circulated for consultation and included in the new IMFLDP. GV commented that Cllr Laurie Fraser had indicated that the Petrol Station site was to be used for extra parking, was this to be the case? Cllr MG had been told that it was to be parking which was vitally important for regeneration of town centre. Cllr MacAulay added that it was still under Co-op ownership but had been page 8 - August 2012
allocated for parking. BS drew attention to number of exits and entrances onto A96 but wished more joined up thinking, to simplify and have proper town centre planning. GV commented that NICE had suggested that buses should use a lay by on either side of the road, instead of pulling into the bus station. Cllr MacAulay reported that planning had approved a new slate to be put on Rosebank Church roof, so the expectation that this will be reroofed. GK commented that 15 years ago THC was pursuing a Repairs order. GK suggested buying back for £1 and consider demolition of Church. ACTION: Cllr MacAulay to follow up Neil Young Transport THC regarding bus lay bys ACTION: Elected Councillors to follow up on the Rosebank Church and report at next NWCC meeting ii) SOUTH NAIRN BS mentioned that THC in the Inner Moray Firth main issues report accepted that a significant constraint on additional building in and around Auldearn is that it would encroach on prime agricultural land. BS felt it rather surprising and odd, that Highland Council does not apply the same principles in respecting prime agricultural land in South Nairn. BY commented that it would be preferable to have 2 storey rather than 3 storey homes on the periphery of Nairn. Des Scholes commented that whoever does get permission for 250 homes, 50 of those will be affordable houses, and reminded local Councillors that the community will have no choice as to who goes into them, and the need to have more local control. There followed discussion regarding concerns over waste and water for South Nairn, as this would impact Ardersier and questions regarding flood risk to the area. MATTERS ARISING SA to follow up Cllr Liz MacDonald regards traffic monitoring strips on tel: 01309 690063
Marine Road. SA did talk to Community Wardens regarding litter in Nairn, they monitor once a fortnight in Nairn, did special check. RY did draw attention to Ward Manager who did follow up. There was National litter day on 07 June where Highland Council and Northern Constabulary joined ranks to highlight blight littering has on environment and crack down on people discarding litter irresponsibly. RY felt that NWCC contribution of food parcels to Blythswood was well received and worthwhile. 9. ANY OTHER BUSINESS BS drew attention once again to the public exhibition next Wednesday afternoon, 20 June in the Community Centre setting out main issues for Inner Moray Firth Plan. All Nairn Community Councils have been invited to send representatives to a workshop meeting on the IMFLDP at 7pm the same evening in the Courthouse. Des Scholes commented on the future of Nairn Cemetery and that two Councillors were actively looking into expanding along Granny Barbours road, emphasising the concern that there was only 12 to 18 months of burial plots left. DS was drawing attention to that fact and for newly elected Councillors to pursue. ACTION: Nairn Councillors to find out situation regards Cemetery expansion 10.TIME, DATE AND PLACE OF NExT MEETING The next meeting would be in the Community Centre on Wednesday, 22 August at 7.30 pm. Parliament Blog & Tides “ Parliament Blog ” In June, the Highlands welcomed his Holiness Dalai Lama to Inverness. The event was one of several public talks across the country to promote the view that personal and global transformation comes from the individual. I was extremely proud to see so many folk turning out for the event at Eden Court. In addition to the Dalai Lama’s visit this month, both houses of the UK parliament were very fortunate to welcome the leader of the Opposition in Burma, and recipient of the Nobel Peace prize, Aung San Suu Kyi to the UK. It was the First Minister that pointed out that, technically at least, I was skiving. But then, so was he! Last Wednesday, he and I were not at Holyrood. We were in a meeting. He was in California and I was in Inverness. The meeting was a video conference, and the Inverness end of the conference, at which I was present, was held in Lifescan’s offices - whilst Alex was north of San Francisco, at the offices of Johnson and Johnson, the owners of Lifescan. The occasion was the announcement of the decision of Johnson and Johnson to locate their global HQ for research and development in Inverness. Lifescan, as SpotLight readers will know, makes products to help those with diabetes manage their condition themselves. The company are constantly seeking further to enhance their products and this key crucial work will now be done in Inverness.

Dreaming of... Jersey & Guernsey
Jersey is the largest and most southerly of the Channel Islands, yet it is only nine miles by five miles. With the best sunshine in the British Isles and direct flights departing Inverness and Aberdeen from June to September, what could be easier? Jersey has some of the best sandy beaches and bays in Britain. St Clements Bay offers beautiful stretches of fine sandy beaches and runs into Jersey’s capital, St Helier. The beach at St Ouen’s Bay stretches for five miles and is rarely crowded, and during the summer months this beach offers an array of water sports. St. Aubin’s Bay, is a stretch of beach from St Helier to the fishing port of St. Aubin. To its east stands Elizabeth Castle, a great historical site which is accessible either by foot at low tide or by the Castle ferry. The Castle has watched over Jersey’s seaway for over 300 years. One of the more popular beaches boasted by the island is St. Brelade’s Bay situated in a sheltered position on the south west of the island making it much warmer than some of the other bays. Nestling off the Normandy coast and only a short ferry crossing from Jersey’s St Helier port is Guernsey, the second largest of the Channel Islands. St Peter Port, the island’s capital, is a bustling harbour full of restaurants and boutiques. Guernsey is situated 30 miles from the French Coast, and it benefits from a much milder climate than we do in the UK. It is a rambler’s paradise with an abundance of wild flowers growing in the mild climate, coastal paths, sweeping sandy bays and wide open beaches. Don’t forget day trips are easily arranged to Jersey’s other neighbouring IslandsHerm, Sark & Alderney! With both islands easily reached with direct flights from your local airport visiting Jersey and Guernsey has never been easier.

Environmental Education In Action Wild things! have been delivering outdoor education with schools across Moray and the Highlands for the last 10 years. We offer a wide variety of programmes including Forest School, Coastal Classroom and holiday camps for children plus certified Bushcraft courses and wild camping experiences for teenagers of all
abilities. We have a wealth of field knowledge, tried and tested activities and session ideas. Our aim is to encourage more people to feel confident in the exploration, discovery and conservation of our magnificent
wild and natural places. To this end, we have developed two new programmes. The ‘Woodland Activity Leader Training’ is a brand new course developed by Wild things! and accredited as an NCFE Level 2 training. The aim of the course is to enable participants to prepare and deliver safe, fun, educational and inspiring woodland activity sessions to a variety of groups. It is intended for teachers, teaching assistants, outdoor instructors, wildlife guides, rangers and parents. This year, the course will run twice - a week long residential version in November and a weekend programme starting in August. Our Youth Leader Volunteer Programme is for young people aged 15+ who are looking for a chance to spend time outdoors, helping and inspiring others. The programme runs throughout the year with volunteering opportunities in both the school holidays and during term time, as well as advanced training sessions. For teenagers, volunteering with

‘...worth a visit just to see its unusual architecture...’
The Universal Hall is one of the finest and most unusual venues in the north of Scotland. Set in the heart of the internationally famous ecovillage at Findhorn, the Hall also serves as a major public venue for touring theatre and music, comedy, dance and film. There are always family shows and events for children in its season of public events. Coming in Autumn 2012 are internationally renowned Scottish artists like Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham and the MacFalls Chamber Orchestra; theatre from Horse and Bamboo and the People’s Theatre (both offering great show for kids); modern dance from the David Hughes Dance Company; classical music from the Masayuki Kino and much, much more. See www.universalhall.co.uk or adverts and listings here in Spotlight for more details of upcoming public shows. The Hall has a charming café with outdoor terrace, The Blue Angel, open to the public seven days a week, and the building is well worth a visit just to see its unusual architecture the hand-carved stone fascia, the geodesic roof with alpine sedum providing a growing cover and glass lantern at the apex, and the imposing stain glass foyer at the front, Inside, have a look at the pentagonal auditorium where the supporting frame is made mostly of wood - unusual in this size of building - but

creating excellent acoustics for music and performance. (The Hall receives a double page listing in the Theatre’s Trust booklet “Scotland’s Theatre Architecture”) The Hall’s web pages provide information about the very latest events - events like films are added on a short notice. Besides print ads, there is also a twice-yearly brochure “The Good Gig Guide” which is available from the building, the café and various outlets like the Phoenix Stores and the Community Centre in Forres. Drop by for a coffee, for a look at the building or to book in for a show. Tickets are usually available for most things (except films which are pay on the door) from the Phoenix Stores (tel 01309 690110) near the entrance to the ecovillage site, or online at www.wegottickets.com/UniversalHall. There is a dance studio and a fully-functioning recording studio in the building - the dance studio is used for weekly classes in such things as yoga, street dance and children’s ballet. In addition, the main auditorium has been rented many times over the years for private events - weddings and celebrations of all kinds. For more information about events, or how to rent the Hall spaces, phone 01309 691170.
