PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Why should we pray? Now back in June, I came across a German man on holiday at Aviemore Railway Station who had lost his jacket with all his money and other valuables. The thought came to me, ‘What if that were me stranded all alone without money in another country.’ When I spoke German to him, I was able to calm this very distressed man down. This is a situation that none of us would want to find ourselves in. Therefore, I persuaded the man to come with me to the police station to report what had happened. As I was walking with him, I was praying inside that the man’s jacket with all his money and valuables would be found. Then just as I had finished praying a bus driver had recognised the man, and he blew his horn to get our attention. Believe it or not - the jacket with the man’s money and valuables were returned to the man who was overcome with great relief! Many would say this was just a coincidence; but I know that this was an answer to prayer. So why do Christians like myself take the time to pray to a God we cannot see? Well just because we cannot see someone - this does not mean they are not there. The reason I

am confident about praying to God is because Jesus made prayer a priority and He even taught us how to pray. Even Jesus’ disciples and other Christians, who have been mightily used to God through the centuries, all testify to the necessity and power of prayer. You might ask, ‘Why will God not answer some prayers?’ The answer to that question we can find in James 4:3, which says: ‘When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.’ Personally, I have recognised that when praying my motives must be right before God. It is an awesome thing to come into the presence of God to seek the things we desire of Him according to His will. I know that when believers pray they can sense God’s presence as if He were there with them in the room. I also realise that unconfessed sin will spoil that prayer relationship we can have with God. Furthermore, effective prayer cannot be reduced to some kind of a magic formula. And God does not respond to our requests because we have the right ritual or chosen the right church to pray in. God is more interested in the condition of our hearts than in our

words although they are also important. But God's Word does give us the basic elements that will enable us to receive answers to our prayers if we trust Him. Finally, it is encouraging to know that the Apostle Paul had prayed for the Ephesian church in the Bible, so they would know the power of God. However, time in prayer is needed with God if we want to experience the power of God within us. But how many will pray for things repeatedly until they obtain what they seek from the Lord? After all, many give up because they do not have the time or energy to pray. So what is stopping you from praying to God? How much do you really believe and trust God to answer when you pray with a right heart?

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES Holyrood meets for three weeks in August because proceedings will be suspended in September for the final weeks of the referendum campaign. Business of Government continues. My colleague Alex Neil and I shall lead a debate on the work we have been doing for supported employment. Supported employment are those businesses where half the workforce have a disability. Behind the scenes, we have been persuading all public sector bodies to use supported employment for some of their needs. So the NHS has given a large contract for nurses uniforms to one supported employment business - and we are using our purchasing power to provide we hope a more secure future for these businesses which provide many people with disability with the self esteem and dignity that comes from work. This has been substantial body of work carried out largely without comment in the press, but demonstrates the value of Team Scotland and our ability to work closely together.

As a UK Treasury Minister, from time to time I have the opportunity to promote Highland businesses on the world stage. Last month, I was privileged to take part in a trade visit to the United States and witness, first-hand, why American consumers love our local produce. Walkers’ shortbread and Diageo’s Scotch Whisky featured strongly as international success stories, but I believe the Highlands has even more to offer US consumers. The United States has strong roots in the Highlands. There are at least three Invernesses in the US and how many American families can trace their ancestry back to the Highlands? Our shared past can help us build a strong future of trade relations across the Atlantic. Thousands of Highland jobs and millions of pounds worth of exports have benefited from American and Highland companies working together. The Highlands has one of the UK’s fastest growing economies, and our specialist produce and low unemployment makes it an ideal place to invest and build even closer ties between our nations.

A familiar face back at the

Golf View Hotel & Spa Donald Macleod, the hotel’s recently appointed General Manager, first worked for the Golf View when he was a ‘wee laddie’ straight from high school. After his initial training, Donald was employed as a Waiter in the hotel dining room before quickly proving himself and moving up the ranks to Junior Assistant Manager. In 1989, Donald’s potential was realised. The company bought over a new hotel - and Donald was offered the position of General Manager. Following a change in ownership three years later, Donald was reunited with his old stomping ground, the Golf View Hotel & Spa, for a year as Assistant Manager, before moving on to pastures new. Donald’s passion for the company had him returning back in 2000, where his easy nature with the customers and wealth of experience quickly established Donald as one of Crerar Hotels’ top General Managers. After commendable periods at three other Crerar Hotels throughout Scotland, Donald has finally come home…

Curiosity of European cooking led Saurav to travel to Cheltenham, England where experience was gained working with renowned Michelin star chefs Gordon Ramsay, Raymond Blanc and Angela Hartnett. Saurav then moved on to achieve his own award-winning status, achieving two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence in his own right at two separate restaurants. Saurav is passionate that only the best produce is used in his cooking, with Scotland’s larder being key in attracting him more than 600 miles to begin his career with Crerar Hotels in March 2014. Saurav explains of his current role, “I aim to elevate the standard of food being served to the customer and meet the expectations of a 4 star hotel, fine dining experience. The Fairways Restaurant has tremendous potential”.

Donald says, “I am delighted as well to welcome new Head Chef, Saurav Kumar, who will ensure the reputation and guest expectations meet the exacting requirements from one of Scotland’s favourite hotels.”

12

Golf View Head Chef, Saurav Kumar, found his passion for food during childhood in the kitchen with his mother. He attended catering college before moving on to achieve a degree in hospitality at the leading Institute of Hotel Management. Whilst at college, Saurav attained ‘Student Chef of the Year in India’, the first of many accolades to come. Finishing catering college, Saurav joined the 5 star Taj Mahal Hotel, amassing invaluable experience and technique in his field.

Saurav Kumar shares his recipe of the month at www.crerarhotels.com To book a stay, or to dine in the Fairways Restaurant, e-mail golfview@crerarhotels.com or call 01667 452 301. Visit Crerar Hotels’ website for more information on the Golf View Hotel & Spa, or any of the 12 hotels in the Crerar family, at www.crerarhotels.com.

Getting into the Christmas Spirit There are few things more magical than the atmosphere of the traditional Christmas market, generally held across European cities in November and December. Every year more and more visitors are enjoying the unique festive charms of Christmas markets in German cities such as Cologne, Nuremberg and Dresden as well as in other European cities such as Vienna, Bruges and Prague. The twinkling scenes of festively decorated plazas with their enchanting market stalls and glittering Christmas trees set against the backdrop of beautiful historic buildings, let visitors relive the magic of yesteryear. The smell of hot mulled wine and roasted chestnuts fills the air. Nuremberg’s Christkindlmarkt is one of the biggest and most famous of the Christmas markets. Nearly 200 festive wooden stalls adorn the Old Town square from the beginning of Advent. Over 2 million visitors from all round the world enjoy the candlelit stalls in this beautiful Bavarian city. There are 21 Christmas markets in Vienna. The Advent Market is in front of the fabulous Schonbrunn Palace where visitors can buy traditional tree decorations, handmade gifts and a large selection of culinary delicacies. There is also the Christmas Village in Maria Theresien Platz with 50 stands with a wide range of goods and a choir is often to be heard.

Italy also boasts Christmas Markets - based in the delightful town of Arco, a short distance from Lake Garda's northern shore, and a gateway to the majestic Dolomite mountains beyond, this festive break includes visits to the wonderful Christmas Markets at Merano and Bolzano, and offers opportunities, on optional excursions, to visit incomparable Venice and Romeo and Juliet's Verona. If you are looking for an extra special treat for children or grandchildren what could be more exciting than a trip to Lapland. This really is a once in a lifetime experience – seeing Father Christmas in his secret hideaway deep in the pine trees. It is the stuff that dreams are made of and you can see it on the faces of young and old alike. A trip on a skidoo or in a sleigh pulled by reindeer – the excitement can all be fitted into a day trip – a long and busy day but it is possible! Alternatively a few days provides a more relaxed atmosphere giving you more time to try out the winter activities

In Prague the markets takes place in Wenceslas Square and in Old Town Square. Huge Christmas Trees sparkle, 150 wooden stalls many selling traditional crafts and the sound of Christmas concerts taking place all add to the magical atmosphere.

LOGIE STEADING Diva Designs We have been making felt here at Logie for the last six years - everything we display and sell is made here in our open studio so visitors can see the whole process and ask as many questions as they like! A frequent question is “how does felt work? What IS it?”. Although we make many light and floaty scarves, hats, wall hangings and much, much more, we don't often find ourselves called on to make really large work. However, just recently, we were commissioned to make a large felted landscape to decorate three of the >V ÕÃÌ VÊ«> i ÃÊ ÊÌ iÊ" ÛiÊ/ÀiiÊ >viÊ iÀiÊ>ÌÊ } iÊ Steading. / iÊ" ÛiÊ/ÀiiÊ >`ÊÀiµÕiÃÌi`Ê>Ê i>Ì iÀÞÊ > `ÃV>«iÊqÊ something that really embodied the essence of the Highlands of Scotland. Reader, do you have any time for God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ? Do you praise Him with your whole heart and with gladness rejoice in Him? Or, do you say in your heart, “I shall not be moved, for I shall never be in adversity. I will not have this man The Lord Jesus Christ to rule over me?” How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Him? www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk
