The Moray Coast Wet & Dry Challenge S ai l i n g w i t h t he R oy al ’ s Despite the rather grand title, the “ R o y a l F i n d h o r n Ya c h t C l u b ” is known locally as ‘the sailing club’, and it is just that. A club to be enjoyed by those who sail and those that don’t. The dinghy sailors young and old, keep the club on-wateractivities alive - a fun bunch - who turn out nearly every weekend to race and socialise afterwards. Findhorn sailing club also has its cruiser sailors who join in races that are held in the Firth and, of course, all the socialising in the clubhouse too. Different people have different ideas of what sailing is, from large yachts to the idyllic image of dinghy sailing on a summer’s afternoon in a fair wind. With the wind behind the
boat the idyllic dinghy becomes supercharged and sometimes can be seen haring across the bay! Sailing can be a very fast and exhilarating sport that can be enjoyed by both the young and old. Sailing is much more accessible than people may think. Clubs are often the best place to begin or continue sailing, as they provide access to other like minded people, as well as facilities such as a safety boat when racing, boat storage, subsidised training for members, usually a bar and also, in the case of the RFYC, a café and a fantastic view of Findhorn Bay. They also provide a great social life for both young people and those not so young! RFYC is holding another open week in August following the success of previous events in May and July. This includes a week of “Try a Sail” days which are free of charge and are available to anyone subject to space. The week will be split into 7 daily slots of two hours each due to tide restrictions. There will be 3 half-hour sessions and with 5 boats on offer this allows for 18 slots a day so booking is important. We have two types of boats which will be used. Four topazes which can be single or two-man crewed, and one Omega which can take 3 crew. Both boats are in excellent condition and will offer those sailing in them a modern and first class insight into the joys of dinghy sailing, with the support of qualified and experienced sailors, and with safety boat support. For details visit the Club’s website at www.rfyc.net or phone 01309 690247 for details an d bookings . Early bookin g is rec om m en ded for t he “Try-A -S ail” places . page 4 - August 2010
‘Ca be r ’ A Hig hla nd Fling ! The Nairn Games were inaugurated on Saturday, August 10th 1867. It was the intention that this should be the first in an “annual series of athletic sports and Highland games.” The scene at the links in 1867 would have had many basic similarities to that of today. Two years later the first event was held, the attendance was put at 8,000 and it was established as the “largest and most popular gathering in the North.” A gathering of this size soon attracted unofficial entertainers – the first itinerant pipers, fiddlers, cheap Johns and the like. No meetings were held during the two world wars, but the games were as popular as ever when restarted after World War II. There were some changes to the games thereafter, the biggest coming in 1952 when the amateur and women’s events were introduced for the first time. Today, meetings provide a greater variety of events than ever before, with traditional Highland dancing and piping providing a contrast with the athletic efforts on the track and in the heavy events, which remain as popular as ever. T H E 1 33 r d N a ir n H ig h l an d G a m e s on 2 1 s t A u g u s t 2 0 1 0 promises to be another spectacular gathering this year. After the successful Homecoming Event of 2009 when organisers were blessed with glorious sunshine the Games committee are now looking forward to another big turn out competitors and spectators on the town links.
In recent years a major crowd puller has been the massed pipe bands marching through the town to the spectacular arena on the shores of the Moray Firth. This year eleven pipe bands have promised they will be there. So over two hundred pipers and drummers will lead a parade from Viewfield to the links. Games Convener Sandra Ross said: "We had two bad years with the weather in 2006 and 2007 but we weren't alone in that. The sun returned oin 2008 and again for Homecoming Year in 2009 so we are hoping for more of the same in 2010 and would remind everyone that we have the only free games in Scotland. It's free to come and sit on the links and you only have to pay if you want a ringside seat."

Looking at the TV pictures of the summer solstice being celebrated at Stonehenge reminded me of how amazing that ancient structure is. I’ve never been to Stonehenge, but I’ve been to Callanish in Lewis, (Britain’s second-best preserved stone circle), and it too is hugely impressive. I need to state categorically here that I have no sympathy whatsoever for sun-worship or anything to do with pagan religion. On the contrary, I thank God, (the Creator of the sun, moon and stars - and of everything else and everyone else too!), for the glorious Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ who gave his life on the cross to take away the sins of everybody who would believe on him, and who would trust him for salvation. But that doesn’t stop me admiring the skill and engineering of those who erected these structures with tools and and ideas utterly primitive by today’s standards. These sites are grand, humbling and atmospheric, but big questions remain. How old
are they? Who built them? And why? The answers have been lost over time - the stones have endured, but not the thinking and the beliefs behind them. When Joshua was leading the Israelites into the Promised Land on their way out of Egypt, God instructed Joshua to build a little memorial cairn so that future generations, seeing it, would ask, ‘What do these stones mean?’ This would afford the opportunity to tell the children about the mighty works of God in former days. (You can read about this incident in the Bible, in Joshua Chapter 4). The Christian world is full of piles of old stones too - old churches where people once worshipped God now fallen into disuse and disrepair. Even Nairn has a few prominently-sited ones! I can well imagine today’s children, and not just the children, looking at these old ruins and asking, ‘What’s that old building, Mum?’ - in effect, ‘What do these stones mean?’

Pastoral letter and Church Meetings
It is the duty of present-day Christians to ensure that the buildings we currently worship in are something vastly greater than ruins-in-waiting. More to the point, God describes believers themselves as ‘living stones’ in his own great building project building a people who will share his glory with him forever. It’s all about the people of God, not the structures they build to worship in. The Christian Gospel is a living, breathing message and way of life, to be lived out by living, breathing men and women, boys and girls. If the Gospel is lived out and proclaimed as it ought to be by God’s people today, then neither the children of today nor of the future will have to look at our buildings and ask, ‘What do these stones mean?’ The very question would be absurd ‘That's where God’s people work and worship! Everybody knows that that's what these stones mean!’ Murdo Macleod Nairn Free Church

High Flyers of The Moray Coast
Local Interest
The district of Moray & Nairn stretches along the southern shore of the Moray Firth from Cullen in the east to Nairn in the west. The Spey and the Findhorn, lend much to the character of the area and many smaller rivers and streams drain the interior into the Moray Firth. Typical breeding species are Dipper, Grey Wagtail and Common Sandpiper. Goosanders
inhabit the smaller upland tributaries with a few Red-breasted Mergansers breeding on the lower reaches. There is relatively little standing water in Moray & Nairn but Lochs Oire, na Bo, Loy and Spynie provide winter wildfowl interest; Loch Spynie in particular holds a spectacular winter goose roost, and a rich wetland breeding bird community in summer. The coastline consists of a rich mosaic of habitat types. Short stretches of cliff run from Hopeman to Covesea and from Portknockie to Findochty. Here may be found good populations of Fulmars and Kittiwakes with a smaller number of Shags and Black Guillemots. The best rocky shores are between Burghead and Hopeman, at Lossiemouth and between Portgordon and Findochty. Winter waders, which include Purple Sandpipers, are often well accustomed to people and easily watched. There are three muddy estuaries, the wide expanse of Findhorn Bay and the smaller, but more intimate and easily watched, estuaries of the Lossie and Spey rivers. A wide variety of wildfowl, gulls and terns feed and roost on the estuaries and fishing ospreys are a regular feature in summer. Offshore, Burghead Bay and Spey Bay are well known for their flocks of wintering sea ducks with impressive rafts of scooters, Long-tailed Ducks and Eider. Buckie shore In winter the rocks hold numerous Turnstones, Redshanks, Oystercatchers, Dunlin and Purple Sandpipers. Ringed Plovers, Curlews and Knot can also be expected in smaller numbers. The gull flocks are worth checking for Glaucous and Iceland, especially around Buckie harbour where the first Ross`s is long overdue! Strathlene, just to the east of Portessie, has banks of gorse along the shore below the golf course. This area provides by far the best site in Moray & Nairn to search for displaced passerine migrants when wind and rain are in the east in spring and autumn.
page 8 - August 2010
B urg h ea d B ay Divers of all three commoner species can be seen in autumn and winter as well as Slavonian and, sometimes, Red-necked Grebes. Long-tailed Ducks and scoters often number in thousands in winter and careful scrutiny of the flocks will often reveal at least one Surf Scoter. C o ve s e a C li f fs Viewing the seabird colonies from above is not easy and they are best seen from the beach below. Great care is needed however on a rising tide as access back to the cliff top path is not easy. Fulmars, Kittiwakes and Herring Gulls form the bulk of the colonies but a few pairs of Shags and Greater Black-backed Gulls also breed. Stonechats inhabit the cliff top gorse. Cul b in For es t an d the Na ir n & Cul b in B a rs In the forest listen out for Crested Tits that are quite numerous and most easily located by call. Also present are Siskins, crossbills (apparently Parrot as well as Scottish); Stonechats and, in summer, a few Tree Pipits and Redstarts. Around the bars in summer can be found breeding Shelduck and Eider but the seaduck and wader flocks between autumn and spring are the main interest. Oystercatcher, Knot, Dunlin, Redshank and Bar-tailed Godwit are the main species but this
is also the best site in the area for Sanderling and Grey Plovers. Kin g sto n an d Sp e y B a y Breeding species around the mouth of the Spey include Shelduck, Terns and Ringed Plovers. The main interest is to be found between July-September when Ospreys fish the river mouth and waders passage, although light in terms of numbers, often includes scarcer species such as Whimbrel, Greenshank, Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper. Offshore Spey Bay holds an important moulting flock of Red-throated Divers in autumn when hundreds may be present. Great Northern Divers are regular in summer plumage in spring. Sea ducks are less numerous than formerly but good numbers of scooters, Long-tailed Ducks and Eiders can still sometimes be seen. Co p y k i nd l y su p p l ie d b y Ma r ti n C o ok .

SpotLight Chef’s Confidential
Quail Balotine with Wood Pigeon Breast SpotLight would like to introduce you to a new Chef (Peter Norrie of the Knockomie Hotel) who, from this month, will be providing the Chef’s Confidential. Before you read the recipe, however, we would like to extend our most sincere thanks to John McCruden (Head Chef of Chapter One restaurant) for all the work that he has put in over the last two years or so. All the recipes that are printed in SpotLight are designed individually by the Chef and there is much work involved in producing this - so once again - thanks John for all your hard work and to Peter for offerring to pick up the baton! What now follows are all Peter’s words! We teamed up with MacBeths of Forres butcher to perform a live cooking demonstration at this years Royal Highland Show and this is one of the dishes we produced in front of the live audience. It is a simple dish to create but will impress your friends and family. It went down a treat with the audience at the Royal Highland Show when they got to taste the completed dish after the demonstration.
Ingre dients 6 Carrots (for puree) 1 Star Anise 2 Quails (de-boned) 2 Slices Parma Ham Baby Spinach 2 Wood Pigeon Breasts Wild Mushrooms

Metho d - Quail Balotines Cook Carrots in water with Star Anise and a teaspoon of salt until extremely soft, strain but keep the water. Liquidise carrots adding the strained water until mixture is of a spreadable texture, pass through a fine sieve. For the Quail, cook Mushrooms and season, remove from pan and leave to cool. Place one slice of Parma Ham on cling film. Place your Quail on top of the Parma Ham, place some Mushrooms and Spinach inside. Roll into a cylinder, tie each end and then poach for 12-14 minutes (Rest for 46 minutes Cut open so all excess juices run out, then crispen in a hot pan with oil. At the same time place your seasoned pigeon breast in the pan as well. The pigeon will take 2-3 minutes to cook.

EXTRACTS FROM THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 29TH JUNE 2010 OF NAIRN SUBURBAN COMMUNITY COUNCIL
THC Budget Cuts • To date, we still did not know what the Budget Cuts were to be. • The ‘FOI’ request by CCllr John Hart was not yet available. The Budget Cuts would be the main topic of debate at the ‘Ward Forum’ meeting on Wed 30th June 2010, we may know more subsequent to that meeting. The Sandown Lands • Deveron Homes had till Wed 30th June 2010 to appeal the Reporters decision on their planning application. Deveron Homes retain an option on the Sandown Lands till the ‘long stop’ date in 2012. If they intend to submit a revised planning application it would need to be submitted in the not too distant future. Member of the public Ada Grant asked; ‘what happens if Deveron does nothing?’ CCllr John Mackie answered that NSCC had approached THC to ask if the ‘Wetland Park’ project could be proceeded with in the mean time. No definitive answer had yet been received, but the reaction had been fairly ‘upbeat’. He asked the floor ‘if anyone would be interested in helping with the project to let the CC know. Community Council Boundary Consultation • There had been no more progress with this THC had started the consultation process but now would like the CCs to carry on the process. The CCs could not finance the level of consultation required.
MPs should jump at the chance to promote their constituency on the international stage – and Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey offers more to shout about than most. Even so, I was surprised at how quickly an opportunity came along after I was appointed to the new Government. No sooner had I arrived in my new office than I was informed that President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan – after seeing my constituency mentioned in news reports – had been in touch to ask if I could supply him with a photograph of Nethy Bridge. My constituency staff briefly

Nairn Bus Issues • ‘Stagecoach’, the firm who at present run the buses, claim the cancelled routes were not viable. Ada Grant commented ‘at busy periods you can’t get on the buses by the time they reach Tradespark. • ‘Sainsbury’s’ on completion of their new store have pledged £160,000 over 2 years to subsidise local transport. It is hoped that they will not just replace the cancelled services. • Nairn Community Transport are looking, hard, into this problem, but they can’t run a scheduled bus service. Member of the public Des Scholes commented that ‘the HC had to have been informed 70 days prior to the bus routes being cancelled, due to confidentiality requirements they could not inform the public for 14 days that left 56 days they could have. What are they playing at?’ Treasurer • The 2009-2010 statement of accounts was still with the auditors. The bank reconciliation figure shows a balance of £166.34. AOCB • It had been noticed by several people attending the meeting that overgrowing vegetation, poorly positioned posts and traffic signage meant that the traffic signs could not easily be seen. CCllr J Mackie would contact ‘Bear Scotland’. Next Meeting Nairn Academy, Tuesday 24th August 2010 @ 19.30hrs.

wondered if this was some form of civil service prank, but were persuaded that the request was genuine. A photograph was duly arranged and dispatched – and thus, I hope, a diplomatic incident was averted! If only all the problems of Government were so easily solved. I am not sure why President Karzai wanted the picture – although I do know he came to Strathspey on a visit to the UK some years ago. By coincidence, this summer marks the bicentenary of Nethy Bridge and the three other bridges in the village, all of which were designed by Thomas Telford.

The Scottish Parliament is on recess till September. So I'll be spending my summer "holiday" with tours around Nairn and Inverness along with the other parts of my far flung constituency meeting with constituents, holding surgeries and dealing with paperwork along with a series of ministerial visits one of which this week included a beach clean up in Wigtownshire. I think we had better luck with that than BP are having at the moment in the Gulf States of the USA! But it isn't all work. I love the chance to introduce my two year daughter to the delights of the summer season of Highland Games and Agricul-

tural shows. The summer recess is a great opportunity for me to couple work with some of my other loves, pottering around book and record shops in Nairn and Inverness and hunting for old books and Jazz CDs and old music which I love, when I get the chance, to play on the piano. My daughter isn't entirely convinced yet about my taste in jazz, in fact the hands often go up to the little ears..but I am sure she will come round..perhaps a few visits to the Nairn Jazz festival this year will do it..no harm in trying. Natasha is now two years and one month; as someone once said; "babies are a nice way to start people", and they are generally more popular than politicians!
