The Editor “Did you enjoy your week of summer?” I heard someone say recently! Living on the Moray coast I have grown to expect the unpredictability of our weather - reason to moan, maybe? But look beyond the rain and view our beautiful Scottish outdoors. We may not have Sorento sunshine, but we’ve got scenery that is the envy of the world. So get out there and enjoy our spectacular Moray Coast - just don’t forget your brolly!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS “PBPGINFWMY” Philipians1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. You too may have a steel bar in your garage and at first sight you may look at it and see nothing to it. Others may see your steel bar as having a limited use at best. A blacksmith sees this as a £5 horseshoe. A manufacturer sees this as £200 worth of sewing needles. A watch maker can turn this into springs for a £2000 Rolex Watch. It depends whose eyes behold it and whose hands touch it. Others may sometimes look at us like the steel bar; limited use at best… BUT God sees this as an unlimited piece of material that can be used to be anything and or make anything. The only limits are the ones we place on God. Look at King David in the Old Testament. Before he became King, David’s family saw him as a bar of steel and nothing more. They never saw him more than a little brother, a

sheep herder, a pretty boy, the youngest, the smallest. David’s father overlooked him, His brothers overlooked him. Prophet Samuel overlooked him. Goliath overlooked him. They saw him as a cheap bar of steel at best. BUT God saw more than that. He saw character, integrity, humility. He saw heart! “What does Jesus see in you?” Others can overlook or overstate your importance, not Jesus. The Lord knows your life. He has seen what you have been through, things others may never know. He has seen your heart when others would not look at you. Others saw David and may see you as a finished project; God saw David “as being under construction”! Or look at the Apostle Paul: Others saw him as a murderer, a trouble maker, a rebel. Even the disciples could not believe he was saved. Jesus saw Paul as a leader, a follower, He saw his heart. The truth is everyone of us is “under construction.” However, being ‘under construction’ is not an excuse to do what we want. To be under construction means to be

pliable, workable, obedient, submissive. God wants to fashion our lives according to his image, power, and purpose. We will never be who we are supposed to be without Christ. Some say: “I’m who I am because of hard work, dedication, education, experience. Truth is, Jesus can use these things in our life, but He is the one that moulds us, and shapes us. Family, friends, co-workers may say ‘you can’t do it, and never can’. Thank God, He says ‘you can’! AND He created us, so He should have the final say! I’ve seen these letters “PBPGINFWMY” on badges. It means : Please Be Patient God Is Not Finished With Me Yet. God sees us as being ‘under construction’ …. Let’s see each other in this way and encourage each other as we grow into what God wants us to become.

Red Thread Alert ! I’ve just put out an e-Alert to all our customers, as we have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed, clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.

If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season. Don’t forget though, if we have dry spells during the summer, you need to water the grass just like any other plant. An hour with a sprinkler in the evening is best to ensure you don’t lose much of the benefit from evaporation during the day. Often people think you don’t need to water the garden in Scotland, but you do, especially around the drier parts of our area along the Moray Coast. PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES Marine tourism has been growing in Scotland. Marinas have sprung up around the coast with busy berths at Inverness and Nairn. Sailing has become more popular as has cruise liners with nearly half a million passengers enjoying voyages round Scotlands coast stopping off at places such as Kirkwall, Invergordon and Stornoway. The Caledonian Canal is a world class attraction and being developed further by Scottish Canals and successful businesses. It was fitting that in Holyrood before the summer recess, we debated the new Marine Tourism strategy. This seeks to make the most of our sparkling seas beautiful coastline and attract to Scotland more visitors in various niche markets. Whether it is sailing, yachting, swimming, diving, canoeing, kayaking or just sitting in a cosy corner watching the sea perhaps with a wee glass of vino - the sea has a certain pull for us all and so it is right that we make the most of it for our tourism sector.

Firstly I would like to take this opportunity, in my first blog post, to thank the people of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey for their overwhelming support during the election. Although I received over 50% of the vote, I am determined to work for everyone in the constituency. I’m already working to deliver on my election commitments and supporting people who need my help in this constituency. Some of the early work has involved getting a fairer deal on mobile coverage and progressing further investment in this area. Getting a team together and an office set up has been a real priority since my election. During my campaign I talked about being an accessible MP and I absolutely want to deliver on that promise. I am already holding surgeries across the constituency and look forward to meeting many more constituents over the summer break.
