As the festive season draws near we are encouraged to spare a thought for our neighbours or people that live on their own but of course people living on the own are not just on their own at Christmas. A kind word, a pint of milk or a cup of tea shared can brighten anybody’s day and we can actually do this at any time of the year. As someone once said:
Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings During October we see witches, ghosts, skeletons and pumpkins everywhere in the shops reminding us that it will be Halloween soon. As soon as we reach the end of October, it will be Christmas in the shops. Santa and the reindeer replace Dracula and the zombies. Halloween and Christmas are both popular celebrations, yet, there is such a difference between them. During Halloween our children make fun of gory and scary things, which helps them to realise that these things do not exist and that we should not be scared of them. During Christmas we celebrate peace and goodwill as symbolised by the birth of Jesus. The one celebration is about fear, the other about peace and goodwill. Sadly, the power of fear has been overrated and exploited since the beginning of time. Our natural response to fear would be: fight, flight or freeze. None of these responses is helpful or
constructive, but it works. Even political leaders regard fear as the most useful tool in managing people’s behaviour: If they want people to do something or not to do something, they make a law which implies punishment if the law is broken. As people will fear punishment, they would be inclined not to break the law. Even religious organisations have abused fear as an instrument to manage people’s behaviour. People have decided to accept a certain faith in fear of condemnation and eternal punishment. Christmas stands for something completely different. In the song of the angels we hear the words: ‘Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, goodwill among people (Luke 2:14)’. The beauty of God is seen in the effect of peace and goodwill on earth, in the way people’s lives are transformed in order to serve as

channels of peace and goodwill. Peace is much more than an absence of war, it is ‘wholeness’, it is about healing, restoration, transformation and creation of a context in which goodwill can flourish. Peace and goodwill represent a force that is much stronger than the power of fear. Christmas stands for a new worldorder in which we do things because we are driven by love, not by fear. We build bridges, we make friends, we make compost of old troubles and we believe in a new beginning. May you have a blessed Christmas!

Reader, do you care? When you stand before God what will you do if you’ve rejected His Son Jesus Christ here on earth? Oh the folly of rejecting Christ when you lift up your eyes in Hell being in torments, crying for mercy at last, when mercy is passed. Behold, NOW is the day of salvation, the day of grace. WHOSOEVER believes and receives Jesus Christ as their Saviour should not perish but have eternal life. Eternity where?

Parliament Blog & Tide Times
With the darkening nights, the pace of rural life seems to slow somewhat. The flood of tourists becomes a trickle – providing welcome respite though we should always be thankful that they come to visit, supporting our local economy and businesses. But it would be wrong to think that we all go into hibernation mode! Communities, families, schools and businesses gear up for the festive period, with parties, events, nativities, Christmas fayres and gatherings all to take place. It is in this winter season that the self-reliance and resilience of our communities comes to the fore. There is a willingness to reach out, to include and support each other across the generations that is, I think, quintessentially rural and Scottish. And I look forward to playing my part, small though that is, in it all.
Fergus Ewing MSP
I recently raised an early day motion in parliament commending the Scottish Provincial Press for its Highland Heroes Award scheme which aims to recognise those in the Highlands who are making a real difference to communities, healthcare, education, safety and wellbeing. Initiatives such as these are a fantastic way to recognise the great many dedicated and hard-working individuals in our communities and I would encourage all to read about the truly inspirational folk in our communities who have been nominated and to take part in the vote. All of those who have been shortlisted for the award should be very proud of themselves and I wish them all the best of luck at the awards night in Inverness in November. SpotLIGHT Feature
INTRODUCING THE ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP
TO THE HEART OF
SCOTLAND “
Everything for which Scotland is famous in 250 miles to the heart of Scotland – that’s what visitors can expect from the country’s newest driving route revealed.. Launched at the Moray Speyside Tourism Conference in Elgin, the circular route will take visitors on a journey through Speyside, the Cairngorms, Royal Deeside, Aberdeen, the East Coast and the Moray Coast giving visitors the opportunity to drive fantastic roads with lovely views while also being able to explore castles, wildlife, coastal villages, stunning beaches, golf courses, mountains, forests and distilleries.
Guy Macpherson-Grant explained his vision:
I am delighted to reveal the North East 250 today amongst fellow tourism businesses in Moray Speyside. I am excited by the potential of the North East 250 to bring more visitors to our area and experience, what I believe, is the very best that Scotland has to offer. We need businesses along the Route to really get behind it and help make it the success I know it can be.
”
It is hoped that the new route will bring additional trade to communities situated along the North East 250, with visitors to the North East wishing to explore Scotland in a different way and to make the most of the various itineraries possible.
Laurie Piper, Operations Manager at Moray Speyside Tourism, the destination marketing organisation responsible for promoting Moray to visitors, commented: “I am confident that the North East 250 will contribute to the continued growth and development of Moray Speyside’s tourism industry which is what everybody gathered at today’s conference is aiming for.”
The North East 250 has been developed by local businessman Guy Macpherson-Grant, whose family’s roots on Speyside go back to the 16th century. Passionate about the North East of Scotland, Guy is confident that the North East 250 will encourage people to come to the region, to enjoy driving its roads and to enjoy everything it has to offer besides: spectacular scenery, bounteous wildlife, globally renowned food and drink, traditional warm hospitality and activities galore.
The North East 250 has already attracted significant support amongst businesses along the route. Partners and Supporters include Chivas Brothers, Ballindalloch Castle and Gardens, Turcan Connell, Walkers, Aberdeen International Airport, Speyside Gardens and the Station Hotel, Rothes. Jo Robinson, VisitScotland Regional Director, said: “This exciting new route is a welcome asset to the North East and will, we would hope, simulate the success of other similar routes around Scotland.
“This area has arguably the best scenery, landscapes and views in Scotland and we would anticipate that the introduction of such a route will bring economic benefit to the area and its tourism businesses through increased visitors.
Those visitors or locals doing the route can also become a Member for access to extras, including: a downloadable itinerary of choice, a printed map of the route, a North East 250 Member car sticker and a souvenir North East 250 Passport - to be stamped as you travel along the route.
“VisitScotland works closely with communities and businesses to showcase the rich assets, hidden gems and stories of every region in Scotland. Tourism is more than a holiday experience – it is integral to sustaining communities across Scotland by generating income, creating jobs and stimulating social change.” The North East 250 team has carefully curated initial lists of places to visit, as well as provided information on some accommodation providers and local amenities. Information on these can be found on www.northeast250.com under each of the route’s sectors: Speyside, the Cairngorms, Royal Deeside, Aberdeen, the East Coast and the Moray Coast. These attractions and places to visit will be added to all the time as businesses sign up, and feedback from people who have completed the route is encouraged to ensure that the best experience is created for future visitors. Guy Macpherson-Grant launches the North East 250, Scotland’s newest tourist route, with a Morgan Aero 8 finished in Porsche Metallic Prosecco and lichen green leather, courtesy of Revolutions Perth, at Ballindalloch Castle.
First drivers, The Cannonbawz Run, hit the road from Ballindalloch Castle on Scotland’s newest driving route, the North East 250.

SpotLIGHT Garden
Brought to you by:
UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
What can we possibly be usefully doing in December? With nothing much growing, and the ground sometimes pretty solid, often frosty. It’s when we take our heavy American golf course aerators out and about to aerate lawns. We do hollow-core tining, where the machine removes thousands of plugs from the ground. Golf courses are doing this too at this time not surprisingly. Aerating the ground is multi-beneficial as it allows air into the ground, helps with drainage, and thins-out the root zone which becomes compacted and choked over time. This is mainly about moss control in this part of the world ! You can do this with a garden fork too, but not as effectively obviously as with a machine which actually removes a core of material. I’ve included a picture of our aerator, a formidable piece of kit, and not available in B&Q or at your local garden centre!
Just a reminder; the leaves are all off now, and if they are still in drifts on your grass, it’s a very good idea to lift them. Several weeks without light and air under a pile of leaves is likely to kill/seriously damage a patch of grass. Alastair Watt

SpotLIGHT Recipe
118 High Street, FORRES IV36 1NP P
Turkey & Rice Soup Every one loves a hearty soup, particularly on those cold winter days in December. With this recipe you can put the left over turkey to good use keeping the family fed, warm and happy throughout the season.
Ingredients: 6 Slices of Smoked Bacon Chopped 500g Left over Turkey 2 Cloves Garlic, Minced 1 Onion Red Or White Diced 200g Chopped Carrots 200g Washed Spinach 1 Chopped Red Pepper
2 Cups of Cooked Brown Rice 2 litres Chicken or Turkey Stock Splash of White Wine Bay Leaf Thyme
Method: 1 In a pan gently fry the bacon until crispy, remove from the pan and set aside. 2 SautĂŠ the onion in the bacon juices until soft, then add the garlic, pepper and carrots and cook for a few minutes.
3 Add the white wine, herbs, turkey and the stock and bring to the boil. 4 Add the rice and spinach, boil for a few minutes. Season to taste. 5 Serve with the crispy bacon sprinkled on top. If the soup is too thick after the rice has been added then just add more stock accordingly. Extra vegetables like sweetcorn could be added or cabbage could be used instead of the spinach..
Enjoy!and Merry Christmas 30

Reader, The Lord Jesus Christ is God’s Righteousness to everyone that believeth. He alone is able to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. Why would you be a lover of pleasures or riches and not a lover of God’s Son, who died for your sin on the Cross of Calvary? Reader, Eternity where? It is appointed unto you once to die and after this your judgment.

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS ‘THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER’. Well it has been a stormy and beautiful autumn hasn’t it?! I love the autumn colours and have spent several happy days out with my dog, Solly, enjoying the local hills and forests. I’m also working on three very different and very exciting garden designs at the moment. Now is a great time of year for getting the garden sorted ahead of spring, and is the perfect time for getting trees and shrubs planted. My own garden continues to progress, and I’ve been distracted somewhat by putting together some elaborate bird feeders that now hang outside my kitchen window, giving me a great view of any peckish, feathered friends that drop by. There are a number of jobs to be getting on with in the garden in December. Here are a few DO’s and DON’Ts:
DO use your lawnmower to collect and chop up leaves. Then you can make a leaf-mould pile, or you can put some on your compost. DO plant trees! Now is the best and most effective time to plant trees because you can plant them ‘bare root’ while they are dormant. If you have to prune Birches or Acers, now is the time to do it, before the sap starts rising. Birches in particular do not look good after pruning, and take a couple of years to recover a natural looking form.
34
DO clean your garden tools, sharpen blades, and take the opportunity to clean and tidy your shed and greenhouse. DO get your garden machinery serviced, this will help ensure it lasts a long time. DON’T forget to keep your bird feeders full, and if you can, make sure there is some water available in a bird bath or shallow pond. DON’T leave your lawnmower sitting all winter with fuel in it. DON’T fertilise your plants or grass. Most plants are having a rest at this time of year – leave them to it! DON’T forget to ensure loose fence panels, gates and empty plant pots are all repaired or secure. In fact look out for anything that might get blown away by winter storms! DON’T forget about your garden until the spring. If you’ve projects that need doing, now is the time to get professionals in to help out before their spring-time diaries fill up!
