Words by the Wayside “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Genesis 18:25)

Reader, God never holds anyone responsible for not doing that which they cannot do. If He did, that would make God unrighteous. If you have not received God’s Salvation, found alone in His Son Jesus Christ, it is not because you cannot, but because you will not! If you confess your sins to the Lord Jesus Christ He is faithful and just to forgive you your sins, and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. Christ died for the ungodly!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings At this coldest time of year when all the festivities of Christmas are past and spring still seems a long time coming, it’s good to have something to look forward to. Maybe even something which captures a little of light and hope that we have enjoyed only a few weeks previous; which is why the church still keeps a very old festival at the beginning of this month of February. This is the Feast of Candlemas which dates back to around the year 300 AD. It is sometimes called the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple and refers to the story in Luke’s Gospel where Mary and Joseph take the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for a blessing, a bit like the same way people still bring their new baby to church for baptism today. And just like today when people greet a couple with a new baby, there were folks there waiting for them to share in their celebration. One of them was a prophet called Anna who had lived

around the Temple for a very long time. Another was a man called Simeon who took the baby Jesus in his arms, saying these words which we sometimes know better by their Latin name of the Nunc Dimittis; Lord, now let your servant go in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all people, a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel ( Luke 2 v 35-40) It was Simeon’s way of blessing the couple and their baby and it must have been another reminder for them that Jesus was no ordinary child. Simeon and Anna add their voices to those of the shepherds and the angels, to tell us again that this is God come to us in Jesus. So, that’s the story behind the festival, but what about the candles ? Through the Christmas season candles often symbolise the light of God’s love coming into the world. As is tells us in John’s Gospel “In Him was life and the life was the

light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it” ( John 1v 4-5). When it comes to Candlemas, which is the end of our Christmas celebrations, we recall that the light and the love that Jesus brings is not for ourselves alone, but to be shared with everyone and so the candles are lit and carried out of the church into the world. It is just a nice way of saying that the God who comes to us in Jesus is for everyone and the light and joy and hope that we find in the Christmas season and beyond, can help spread his love around.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times The modern world’s reliance on the internet has become so important that a fast broadband connection is now regarded as the fourth utility along with water, gas and electricity. All politicians will be judged on this issue and even more so now that the UK Government will ensure that homes and businesses have a legal right to high-speed broadband by 2020. That strengthens consumer rights and that is a step in the right direction. The Scottish Government have committed £600 million towards ensuring every home and business has secured superfast broadband by 2021. A bold ambition and one that I welcome. However, only time will tell if £600m is enough. By 2021 there will be no excuses and the Scottish Government must deliver.

Edward Mountain MSP

The Scottish Government plans to enable all homes and businesses to have access to superfast broadband, at 30megabits per second, by 2021. The plan, supported by a budget of £600M, will divide Scotland into three regions for the purpose of getting competitive bids and thus best value. I know that those who lack superfast are frustrated, and so 2021 seems like a long way away. In the interim, those on very slow speeds of up to 2mbps can contact the Better Broadband Programme run by the Scottish Government. Rolling out R100 from 2019 we aim to complete the provision by end 2021 using a voucher scheme for those who cannot access through fibre. This is the most ambitious plan anywhere in the UK, and the largest investment. It will seek to make Scotland a world class digital nation essential for the world our children are inheriting.

Thanks to online shopping we are all increasingly aware of the benefits of shopping around when it comes to purchasing new household items, getting deals on broadband services and booking holidays. However people still remain reluctant to shop around to get better deals when it comes to their home energy. Whilst this is the case across the country, new figures published by Energy UK, show that consumers here in the Highlands are some of the least likely to switch providers. From my ongoing campaign to encourage people to take charge of spiralling energy costs, I have heard some fantastic first hand examples of just how much can be saved. One constituent told me she made a saving of £1,117 per year, whilst another saved £813. This shows just how worthwhile it can be to switch and I would encourage all Spotlight readers to look to see how much they can save.

Vegan Caramel Apple Walnut Cake This issue we see the return of the popular Vegan Caramel Apple Walnut Cake. You know the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well, it is true that apples are healthy for us. Apples also make a tasty addition to baked goods like cakes, they’re simple, easy and always taste great. Recipe is supplied by The Peppermill Restaurant in Forres.

Ingredients: 6 tbsp brown sugar 4 cooking apples, peeled and sliced 3 cups plain flour 3 tsp ginger 225g vegan marg 1 1/2 cups brown sugar

2 tbsp golden syrup 1 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 1/3 cup soya milk 1 1/2 tbsp lemon juice 2 grated apples 1 cup walnuts

Method: 1. Sprinkle the sugar in the base of a large heavy-based frying pan suitable for the

oven, arrange apples on top of the sugar.

2. Sift the flour and ginger together then rub in the margarine and sugar. 3. Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in the soya milk. 4. Mix all the remaining ingredients with the flour mixture and the soy mixture and tip into the tin and bake in an oven preheated to 180 degrees for approximately 40-45mins or until a skewer comes out clean.

Complete Lawn Renovation – a project this year ? Many of you will, in your darkest moments, consider giving up on your lawn… too far gone ….. wouldn’t know where to start ….. best to get it dug up and put down a new lawn ! Replacing a lawn can be very expensive, however, whether you plan to replace it with a new lawn or even slabs or gravel. Consider this, a worn-out lawn can actually be renovated in situ at a fraction of the cost of removing and replacing the whole thing. I have included here a Before and After picture taken just a few weeks apart. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come).

1.

Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development.

2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper.

BEFORE

3.

Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is, however, open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting.

4.

Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and, therefore, environmentally friendly. It contains nutrient to assist existing grass and promote good germination from the seed and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). The best time to tackle this is June-Sept in Scotland, and that means starting planning now for your new lawn this summer. At around £2 per m2 to renovate, compared with around £12 per m2 to replace, it really is worth considering.

Words by the Wayside “the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments... (Luke 16:22,23)

Reader, the rich man ‘was buried’; is that the end of things for him? By no means, it was only the beginning. He was conscious, in the full exercise of his faculties, memory, etc, and in torments! He awakened to eternal truth but too late! He prayed, but too late! Reader, God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that you might live through Him. This life is in His Son. Believest thou this?

The Garden TOM ANGEL IS A GARDEN DESIGNER AND CHARTERED HORTICULTURIST BASED IN AVIEMORE. TOM PROVIDES GARDEN DESIGN AND HORTICULTURAL SERVICES AS

THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER, HAVING PREVIOUSLY RUN HIS OWN COMMERCIAL GARDENING BUSINESS FOR TWELVE YEARS.

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER. February can feel like the harshest of winter months, and we have certainly already received enough cold weather in January, but spring is around the corner now and there are a number of jobs that can be done now to help keep on top of the garden before the spring growth commences. One of the trickier jobs that can be managed now is pruning Wisteria, but you needn’t be too scared of this. Pruning involves cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. I’m going to elaborate on this in my blog, where I will give some more detailed instructions for this. Here are some other tasks that could or should be done in the garden in February:

DO prune summer-flowering Clematis before they start growing actively. DO renovate Beech hedges that need more robust pruning. DO plant bare root shrubs and trees. DO prune Winter Jasmine after it has flowered. DO take down any tired looking dead seed-heads that you have left over the winter. DO cut back deciduous grasses before fresh growth begins. DO prune/trim winter-flowering shrubs such as Mahonia japonica and Viburnum tinus after they have flowered. DO dead-head winter bedding as it can encourage some species to flower again. DO prune apple and pear trees.

22

DON’T forget to make sure all your machines are all serviced ahead of the spring. DON’T work heavy soils that are wet, wait till they have dried out. DON’T be tempted to start sowing lots of seeds in the greenhouse, they may well just become weak and spindly due to lack of light. DON’T forget to keep putting bird food out, and if possible keeping some water available for birds to drink from and bathe in. DON’T forget to use any slightly warmer days to start tackling moss build-up on hard surfaces. March is a busy month in the garden, with fair amounts of pruning to do, so get all and any tidying done that you can in February. I’ll be back next month, and in the meantime I’ll be getting on with all these jobs in my own garden!
