For many, the prospect of a New Year can be daunting sometimes but I recently came across this quote which I quite liked:

The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. Gilbert K. Chesterton

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Happy holidays Every year around this time, I have a familiar experience. I'm out shopping, and I'll go through the checkout line, and pay for my stuff. When the cashier hands me back the change, they'll say "Merry Christmas" or perhaps even "Happy holidays". I realize that this comment is not always motivated by the cashier's genuine interest in whether or not I enjoy my Christmas. I'm aware that they may be saying this because they've been told to. I can imagine the memo from Tesco corporate headquarters directing cashiers when to switch from "Do you need help with your packing" to "Happy Holidays," on the assumption that this will somehow help cement a lasting bond between the store and the customer that won't evaporate when a new Asda/Wal-Mart opens down the street. I'm aware of all that, and suspicious of the whole business. But at least once every year, I have a cashier who looks me in the eye and says "Merry Christmas," and really means it. And it changes my whole day. There really is something genuine to

this whole idea of Christmas cheer. As Dec. 25th draws near, people warm up just a bit. If you're out and about on Christmas Eve, maybe people seemed friendlier than on any other day of the year. People warm up when they are mindful of the Christ child's birth, and make an extra effort to practice the virtues the angels sang of at His birth - "peace on earth, goodwill towards men." But consider this - why do we notice this at Christmas? Why does this surge in warm-heartedness stand out? I think it's because, despite our best intentions, good will towards men can easily become just a seasonal event rather than a standing policy. When Christ entered our world, he didn't come to brighten our Decembers, but to transform our lives. It can be hard work to practice good will towards one another. But John the Baptist's message was that as we prepare for Christ to come into our lives, we can change our ways. The Gospel accounts of Jesus' ministry provide the blueprint for loving our neighbour in a busy and complicated world. Christ made a point of seeking out the broken and disenfranchised

people of his day and he saw the value in each one of them. And in so doing, He helped them recognize their value in God’s eyes. John 3:16 (ANIV) 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. This Christmas ‘season’, let us recognize that just as faith is a decision, good will towards people is a series of decisions that work themselves out not in temporary holiday cheer, but in the details of everyday life. So….. have a nice day…. Do you need help with your packing…..happy holidays….. Merry Christmas .. let us give Christmas meaning by making our own decision of faith, and accompany that with the many decisions needed to live with each other the way God intended.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times In the run up to Christmas, my colleague Richard Lochhead MSP has launched a campaign to end the rip-off delivery surcharges across Scotland. The problem of high delivery charges for consumers in remote or rural areas continues to cause hardship for many of my constituents and businesses in the Highlands and Islands – an area that is impacted more than any other part of the UK. As someone who has lived and grown up in the Highlands, I have always thought that it is completely unfair that consumers in rural and remote areas pay more for delivery than anywhere else in the UK. Please support the campaign by singing the petition and if you have a story to tell please share it with us: www.fairdeliverycharges.scot/

I used the opportunity of Small business Saturday to stop off at one of our local butchers to partake of their excellent range of high quality butcher meat and many other mouth-watering attractions. Small Business Saturday is now an annual event but perhaps should feature more as an all year round resolution. I have a specific interest in championing Scotland’s excellent food and drink offer – of which there is plenty in the Highlands. Scotch beef, Scotch lamb, specially selected pork, Scottish salmon and of course, Scotch whisky are some of the better known ones that we produce which are enjoyed at home and internationally. We can all do more to support locally produced and locally sourced food and drink, especially as we fill our freezers and cupboards for the festive season. I encourage everyone to think of supporting local small businesses as well as the national multiples.

At this time of year, you can’t help but think back over and reflect on the highlights and challenges of the preceding year. We are all well used to a whole year being cut into bite size clips on our tv screens on the year in review programmes. My 2017 ‘montage’ would of course have to include the unexpected general election, but the day to day work of helping people is the real highlight of being an MP. Over the past year I have seen first hand the great work being undertaken in our communities by organisations and volunteers such as the Merkinch Community Centre and Badenoch and Strathspey Community Transport. In parliament, I was proud to be able to stand up and give a voice to those struggling under the Universal Credit system by sharing their experiences. I look forward to the challenge of continuing this work in the coming year and wish all spotlight readers the very best for 2018.

Words by the Wayside “...a friend of... sinners!” (Luke 7:34)

Reader, The Lord Jesus loves the sinner but hates the sin. The Saviour is willing and able to save, but the sinner must acknowledge their sin. It is through repentance toward God and faith in The Lord Jesus Christ that men and women are cleansed from their sins and justified in God’s sight. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, Christ died for the ungodly, there is none righteous, no, not one. Your sins, which are many, He alone can take away.

back behind the wheel of his car, he needed a lighter wheelchair. “That’s okay”, says Jack, “I know where I can buy a lightweight wheelchair!”.

June is one of a team of Volunteer Connectors delivering a new type of support to older people with arthritis/other long-term conditions in Nairn and the surrounding area. June lives with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and, therefore, understands the difficulties involved in living with chronic pain and physical limitations. The Staying Connected in Later Life service aims to help people take more control over their lives by participating in a short-term 1-1 mentoring programme. They are matched with a Volunteer Connector who visits them at home to help them:

Learn self-management techniques to better manage their condition(s) Make positive choices to achieve their own personal goals Identify and engage with community activities to keep them connected June was recently matched with Jack, who had been discharged from hospital after a prolonged stay with severe and multiple medical problems. When he returned home, he was using a wheelchair to get around indoors and a scooter for outdoors. Jack was determined to get back on his feet as soon as possible and he was already managing well under the circumstances. But he was feeling quite low about his limitations: the inability to get out in his car, his motorhome, etc. meant he had to find new hobbies. He rarely had visitors and he didn’t like to ask for help either. We used the Older Persons Outcomes Star to identify what Jack wanted to achieve and what stage he was at currently. We looked at what mattered most to Jack, and where he might need some support. From this, we were able to break down Jack’s personal goals into manageable steps and develop an Action Plan that June would support him to follow, making use of self-management techniques to help him take control over his condition. June visited Jack every Tuesday for eight weeks and they followed the plan together, which enabled Jack to set himself goals in between visits. Each time Jack achieved his weekly goals, he grew in confidence and felt better equipped to make even more progress. As his self-esteem grew, Jack was also doing exercises he had been given by the physiotherapy team, to strengthen his muscles, and using a walker provided by the OT to get about the house. But to get

There was no stopping him, he was highly motivated and thus able to benefit from June’s gentle guidance and support to make steady progress towards his goals. During their eight weeks together, they discussed action-planning, problemsolving, assertive communication, pacing, prioritising, and they identified a group that Jack could join when he was able. And, once he got his lighter wheelchair he could drive himself right to the door and even offer other people a lift It wasn’t always plain sailing, there were some setbacks, which Jack used the problem-solving technique to resolve. And there were low points when Jack was very anxious about a close family member who was very ill. June provided a valuable listening ear, and reassurance for Jack when he reached a low ebb. With such high expectations of himself, he was prone to getting frustrated at what he perceived as slow progress, but June kept him focused on what was achievable, reminding him how far he had already come in a relatively short period of time. Jack has made excellent progress so far, but more importantly he has picked up some new skills, which he took to very quickly, and will stand him in very good stead in the future. Whoever said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks was clearly wrong! (Jack’s name was changed to protect his identity.) Staying Connected in Later Life is an Arthritis Care service, which is part of Arthritis Research UK since our recent merger. If you or someone you know is:

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

GreenThumb, About us and looking towards the New Year. Our small team of 4, based here in the Moray Firth, will have a busy year ahead as we will have over 1,100 regular customers presenting us with their lawn problems. Sounds a lot, but we are a pretty small franchise up here though. GreenThumb across the UK will have 500,000 customers this year! As we will be providing local monthly updates as the season unfolds through the year again in this magazine, we thought it might be nice to let you see where we are based.

Although we don’t know exactly what the weather will throw at us this season, we have a fair idea what we will be asked to tackle. Highlights will likely include:

Winter Months Moss and thatch; we will be aerating and scarifying all hours of the day to get through everybody before the Spring Weed and Feed Treatments start. Also look out for leatherjackets emerging (crane fly grubs) and eating lawn roots, sometimes causing devastation.

Spring Months Weed kiill and Spring fertiliser; we will want some decent weather to get lawns off to a good start. Spring 2017 was lovely, but a nice Spring has been a rarity recently..

Summer Months Mowing; best practice is never cut shorter than 1”. Mowing too close is the most destructive thing you can do to a lawn (usually a man-thing) and in particular encourages moss to flourish! June is when we will likely see the first signs of Red Thread fungal disease damage (wet summers are the worst). We’ve had 2 wet Summers in a row now.

Autumn Months Moss control treatments and winter feeds; we will want to get all our customers’ lawns ready for next winter, and most will want to think about aerating and scarifying outwith the growing season, either themselves or using us and our machines. Alastair Watt

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per treatment, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairn and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Words by the Wayside “...the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.” (1st John 4:14)

Reader, the Lord Jesus gave His life a ransom for all. Because of His work on the Cross of Calvary the “whosoever” can be saved (and that means YOU!) We all either accept and receive Him as our Saviour or we refuse the provision God has made for us in Christ. We alone are responsible. The Lord would have all men to be saved; those who come to Him, He never turns away. Come to Him now.

FORRES NAIRN & DISTRICT RDA The Forres Nairn and District Group of Riding for the Disabled Association, which helps local young people cope with their disabilities, first came into being over 35 years ago, following an appeal from the local support group for people with learning difficulties. 1981 was the International Year for the Disabled and the Forres & Nairn Support Group for people with learning difficulties were asked what they would chose if they were given a blank cheque they chose to ask for a local RDA group. And so, in 1982, the local group, (part of a large National & International organisation) came into being. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Hamish and Polly Lochore, the group have always been able to take advantage of the indoor and outdoor arenas at Burgie Eventing Centre. The group meets every Monday morning (during termtime) and hold four rides - each catering for eight children from local primary and secondary schools. They have a wide range of disabilities but once on the ponies their conditions are often much less obvious. For many it is the highlight of their week and they are able to achieve a freedom and movement that they may not experience in their day to day life. They have great pleasure in small successes and enjoy having their trust in their pony returned. The benefits of the session lasts well beyond the Monday morning, with feedback from parents and school telling us of improved muscle tone, better concentration and motivation to persevere at tasks.

The group has gone from strength to strength since then and now helps 32 youngsters every week to enjoy riding and the

equipment that some of the children need. We rely on a small army of volunteers , including the gentlemen who drive the Osprey bus to collect and return the children from the Forres schools. We also need an average of three helpers per child - one to lead the pony and two to walk alongside. So we are always looking for new volunteers who can spend an hour or two to come and help. You need no experience as full training will be given.

We are fortunate to have well-trained ponies, two dedicated and professional Instructors plus a group of local volunteers who give their time as leaders for the ponies, side-walkers and fund-raisers. However, we are the only RDA group in Scotland that make no charge to the riders or schools and with each session costing in excess of £400 in pony hire, instruction and insurance, our fund-raising efforts are continuous. We also raise all funds to purchase equipment such as hardhats, saddlery and specialist

Sweet and Sour Sauce You've tasted it at the takeaway, but you can make it far better at home! Sweet and sour sauce is a great way to add flavour and sweetness to many dishes and can be used in almost all protein based dishes.

Ingredients: 1 Large knob of ginger 2 Cloves garlic 5 Star anise 1 White onion 1 Red onion 1 Green pepper 1 Tin pineapple or 1/4fresh

200ml White vinegar 200ml Orange juice 200ml Coca cola 150g Granulated sugar 4tbsp Tomato puree Pinch Salt and Pepper 2/3tbsp cornflour

Method: 1.Using the tip of a tea spoon peal the knob of ginger, chop into fine matchsticks. Peel and finely chop the garlic cloves, onions and pepper.

2.

Put vinegar, sugar, cola, tomato puree and star anise in a heavy based saucepan and heat.

3.Taste as you go adding more vinegar or sugar accordingly to get the balance right. 4.Add in the ginger, garlic, onions and pepper and let simmer for 5-10minutes. 5.Add pineapple. mix the cornflour with a little cold water and make a smooth paste. Add

the paste to the simmering sauce and stir until thick. This will take a few minutes as the flour will need to cook out. This sauce goes well with either prawns, chicken or pork and served with rice.

Enjoy!and Happy 2018 27

plans for the garden. DO clean garden furniture and decking, slimy moss and algae can start growing from February so now is a great time to get ahead of the game.

GARDEN DESIGN AND

DON’T prune Plum and Cherry trees at this time of year. Pruning puts them at risk of Silverleaf disease, so they should be pruned mid-summer. DON’T fertilize your plants in your garden or inside your house at this time of year. Most plants are having a rest at the moment, and you really don’t want to be encouraging tender new growth. DON’T cut back any herbaceous perennials that have attractive seed heads left on them. Many also use their old foliage to protect the crown of the plant over the winter, so whilst there are some plants that do need cutting back, it is not right for every plant.

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER. We’re right in the middle of winter now, yet despite this there is a lot we can be doing in the garden at the moment. Not only is it a good excuse to get a bit of exercise outside, but some work done in the garden now can really reap rewards once spring arrives. I created a number of new beds in my back garden this year and at the moment I am taking the opportunity to really make sure there are no remnants of weeds in there waiting to burst into life in a few months. I’m also cutting neat edges in the beds and clearing the last of any debris like dead leaves and twigs out. Here are some other jobs to be getting on with in the garden in January:

DO prune Apple and Pear trees. This needn’t be an intimidating job, check out my blog for some step-by-step instructions for pruning small trees. Remember, the final form of an Apple tree should look a bit like a bowl, and a Pear tree should resemble the shape of a Champagne flute. A blackbird should be able to happily fly between the branches of both once you have finished. DO keep the birds fed. Put out a variety of feed if you can, and try to make some water available. I have a ‘pond’ in a Belfast sink which has various stones around and within it to allow birds to use it as birdbath. I free the pond of any ice each morning. DO think about new plans for your garden. Now is the perfect time for new landscaping jobs such as building your own compost heap, or getting help with new designs or

At this time of year, keep an eye out for emerging bulbs and enthusiastic perennials coming back to life. It can get a bit dreary at this time of year and it is always nice to be reminded of the spring and summer riot of emerging life that is just round the corner!
