included a picture of our aerator, a formidable piece of kit, and not available in B&Q or at your local garden centre! Just a reminder; the leaves are all off now, and if they are still in drifts on your grass, it’s a very good idea to lift them. Several weeks without light and air under a pile of leaves is likely to kill/seriously damage a patch of grass. For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. By now you are probably reading SpotLight sitting in your favourite chair (or sofa or bed) having over indulged in food, wine, tv and relatives. The period inbetween Christmas and New Year is a time to take a breather before we launch ourselves into the New Year celebrations. The temptation to overindulge again is indeed strong and only the truly strong will succeed!! But help is at hand, surely? January is the season of fitness classes and weight loss programmes where we reorganise our bodies into something resembling our former self - Good luck and Have a great 2016!!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Invite Jesus Christ to come and live in your heart

he said, "I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you" (John 14:18).

It is always exciting when a new year arrives before us as a page upon which we will write the history of our life. Let us pray for each other that it might be a good year for our Lord's work, for ourselves personally and for our families.

While they had followed Jesus they had learnt many things:

When we face the future seriously, we often feel anxious. This is particularly true if the future looks fearful and if we are plagued with a feeling of our helplessness and insignificance. The disciples of Jesus were horrified at the thought of facing the future without the comfort of his continuing companionship. Jesus sought to allay their fears and to challenge them to faithfulness with a promise of ‘another Comforter.’ So toward the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus concentrated on his twelve apostles. He spent much time with them in seclusion because of his desire to avoid his enemies. At the same time, he wanted to strengthen these men for the task that was before them. He gave them some exceedingly great and precious promises, including the promise that he would give them "another Comforter," a promise they were incapable of understanding at the time. Furthermore,

1. They saw in Jesus Christ what it meant to make a complete surrender to the absolute claims of God over one's life. 2. They saw what it meant to completely forsake sin. 3. They saw the perfection of love in all attitudes, all ambitions, and all relationships. 4. They saw a supreme example of one who was willing to deny himself for the sake of others. 5. They witnessed one who demonstrated a unique aloofness from attachment to material things. 6. They saw and experienced one who lived totally for eternity. Eleven of these apostles became so committed to Jesus Christ that they could not even consider their future existence without His companionship. For Him to depart was totally unacceptable and unthinkable to them. It was in that context that Jesus continued to tell them that He must go back to the Father. He sought to comfort them with a promise of "another Comforter" (John 14:16) who would be their counsellor and helper.

page 6 - January 2016

As we face the new year, we need to accept by faith the presence of this Comforter who came on the Day of Pentecost to dwell in the church. He came on the day of your conversion experience to dwell in your heart. With joy we should recognise the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence and find the strength we need for living effectively in this year 2016. With eagerness we should listen for the Holy Spirit's voice as he speaks to our innermost being as we study the Scriptures, as we pray and as we see a needy world. With love for our Lord and his people, let each of us decide to cooperate with this divine Comforter and Counsellor as we walk through the days of this new year. If you have come to this first Sunday in the year 2016 without knowing Jesus Christ as Saviour, this would be a wonderful time to respond as the Holy Spirit leads you. Invite Jesus Christ to come and live in your heart as Saviour, Lord, Teacher, and Friend. May you know God’s blessing during 2016 Rev Dr Philip Egglestone Minister at Nairn Baptist Church

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES A guid New Year tae ane and a’ - I hope you all had peaceful festivities. I certainly enjoyed the rare opportunity to spend time at home with the family. The break also afforded me the opportunity to visit various charities for whom work does not stop over the festive period. Indeed, it was helping MFR Cash for Kids wrap gifts that reminded of the much quoted words that ‘we can judge a nation on how it treats its most vulnerable’. Whether it is buying gifts for children of families in difficult times or standing up for justice and fairness, here in Scotland we have a long history of leading with compassion and humility. Even in a time that people are feeling the pinch they are still generous enough to think of those who have less, those who need a helping hand. May this spirit and kindness be a feature of our society in 2016 and beyond.

The decision taken to scrap the Carbon Capture and Storage Schemes in Peterhead, and in Yorkshire may become to be seen as one of the most short-sighted ever taken in the UK - ranking alongside such as Dr Beeching's scrapping of the railways, or the slow destruction of our world leading occupational pension regime. Without taking carbon emissions from coal and gas fired power generation - how can climate change be tackled? And with it what an opportunity to be at the forefront of a new industry, not in true British fashion, at the coos tail? It is never too late to persuade the UK Government to reverse a poor decision; but I fear that a strategic opportunity has been forfeited. Only a few days before the decision, the Energy Secretary was extolling the virtues of CCS. So plainly the decision was made not by her but by Mr Osborne for political reasons. The worst kind, in my experience.

INNES HOUSE

Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

Offer extended! Any couple booking their wedding within six months of their wedding date, will be offered complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a 'Champagne Toast' upgrade of their chosen drinks package
