173 years ago on 4th July 2018 Thomas John Barnardo was born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of a furrier - a strongly religious family originally from Germany. By his twenties, Barnardo started opening schools for orphans left destitute by an outbreak of Cholera and by the time of his death at the age of 60 his organisation looked after 8,500 children in 96 locations. Barnardo’s still exists today of course and was recently quoted as running some 900 local services and is reckoned to be the largest UK children’s charity spending some ÂŁ200m per annum. As they say - from little acorns....

Words by the Wayside “The Lord God of Israel was their inheritance (Joshua 13:33)

Christian, worship and sin are incompatible. If we are taken up with our Saviour and His things, we will not be taken up with self, sin or the things of the world. Our passion for the Saviour will determine our lifestyles. What sort of lives are we living? What sort of ambassadorship are we fulfilling? Our Lord Jesus Christ must come first in our lives and ourselves second. God alone is our inheritance and the Lord’s portion is His people.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings The touch of Jesus in our lives.

If we look at the New Testament we find numerous examples of Jesus ‘touching lives’, and the effect of that meeting of lives meant different things to different people. eg read the story of Jesus healing a man with leprosy in Mark 1 v 40-42.(NIV) To some it is THE CLEANSING TOUCH as it was to the leper in this story. Today we are, of course, so much more knowledgeable about the causes of disease, but we often allow our bodies and minds to be affected by the world in which we live, a world which generally doesn't hold to the beliefs that we do, and in so doing we allow ourselves to become affected by dis-ease . This is a stressful, hurtful and often selfish world in which we live. It is at times like this that we too need to know the cleansing touch of Jesus, to have our minds and bodies refreshed by his touch upon them. To others the touch of Jesus was THE QUIETING TOUCH. There are times in our lives when the stress of living makes life almost unbearable. Concentration becomes impossible. Our minds are constantly active, and relaxation just isn't possible. It's at times like this that Jesus can bring to us the Quieting

touch, that takes away the fever that torments our lives and brings peace in its place. To yet others, the touch of Jesus is THE REASSURING TOUCH. At the mount of Transfiguration, when Jesus was seen in the presence of Moses and Elijah, the disciples fell onto the floor in absolute terror. But we read that Jesus came up and touched them. 'Get up,' he said. 'Don't be afraid.' How many moments in our lives do we need that same reassuring touch from the Lord. How often do we need to hear those words 'Don't be afraid.' To some it was the LIBERATING TOUCH that Jesus brought. Sometimes the touch of Jesus brings, not necessarily miraculous healing, but perhaps a new confidence based on the knowledge that each one of us is counted precious in the eyes of God. And of course, the touch of Jesus also was the HEALING TOUCH to so many who came into contact with Him, healing both of body and of mind, of spirit and soul.. For healing touches every part of our lives, both physically and spiritually. To many, the healing comes as broken lives are made whole again; to some the healing is a very physical release from suffering; to others it is an inner healing…… a

restoration of the spiritual bond between creator and creation - a being made right again. The touch of Jesus means different things to different people, and different things at different times in a person's life. The important thing to remember is that where the need is great, then Jesus is there to touch that need. What is needed is the faith of the leper, and the many others who were humble enough to admit that they were in need, and recognized that Jesus was the only one who could satisfy that need. Jesus shows compassion, but is also angered by the sight of suffering in His world, His creation. It is a symptom of dis-ease, of something that is no longer functioning as it was intended. But for Jesus to touch us, we must be willing to reach out and touch him. If we will do that, if we will recognize that here stands the one who can bring cleansing, quieting, reassurance, liberation and healing then he will reach out and touch our lives, and with that touch bring wholeness. Parliament Blog & Tide Times As Minister for Childcare & Early Years, I am absolutely delighted that 2018 is Scotland’s Year of Young People. This is a global first – a ground-breaking, themed year that will celebrate all our young people in Scotland, wherever they live. Events are already underway across Scotland and there are loads of great opportunities for young folk to get involved here in the Highlands. You can find out information about events happening in your areas here: yoyp2018.scot. If there is one aspiration that I hope we might share for 2018, it is to ensure that our young people feel and believe that they are valued, wanted and vital to our country’s future and that their voices are heard and listened to.

LOW TIDE TIMES FOR NAIRN IN JULY

Last week, at Aviemore, I opened the Aquaculture UK Conference held at the Macdonald Centre. 2400 delegates registered with 200 companies taking stands at the trade exhibition, bringing hundreds of visitors to Scotland from all over the world to see latest technology in the sector. The Conference was held outdoors, with a fish farming ship on show, and the opening speech was made Al fresco, in, what I assured our visitors, was the characteristic blazing sunshine amidst a clear blue sky with the Lairig Ghru dominating the backdrop. The sector supports 12,000 jobs in Scotland and generates over 600Million in earnings. The jobs are well paid, diverse and offer real opportunities for young people. The challenges the sector face in terms of disease and mortality are being tackled. I launched a ten year blue print for Government scientists and Industry continuing to work closely together further to tackle these challenges with for example sea lice numbers in decline, cleaner fish deployed, and salmon spending less time at sea. Scottish Salmon is accorded the prestigious and coveted Labelle Rouge in France and attracts a significant price premium in the market. It is also very tasty as well as being highly nutritious. A modern Scottish success story.

There was a time that the Highlands were at the back of the que when it came to digital connectivity – though I am pleased to say this is no longer the case due to the great progress being made. The roll out of 4G mobile connectivity is something I have campaigned for many years and I am glad to see new mobile masts now coming online – including the latest ones that will serve the Loch Ness area to ensure both locals and visitors are not left searching for a signal. For residential properties The Scottish Government is making great progress with the Superfast Broadband roll out – with the ambitious aim of connecting 100% of properties. For our businesses in the Highlands to compete with other regions and cities, we must be ready for the next developments in technology. I would urge businesses to look into the new Gigabit Voucher Scheme – that can offer up to £3000 for installation of gigabit ultrafast connections. All these developments coupled with our ambition will ensure the Highlands stays in the fast lane.

SpotLIGHT Garden

Brought to you by:

Watering Lawns – in Scotland - really? Yes really, especially along the sandy soils and low rainfall of the Moray coast. The last two springs have seen prolonged dry spells in our area, and this is not unusual. We often get prolonged high pressure influence at this time of year, which cuts off the prevailing westerly fronts coming in off the Atlantic. It might not always seem warm and dry as we sometimes get a cold haar coming ashore. But even then, any rainfall amounts can be negligible. Watering lawns is important at this time for a number of reasons. They will quickly turn brown and dry looking, as do golf course fairways and rough, and other public grassed areas, Lawns are trying to wake-up after a winter hibernation and may have been traumatised by scarifying and raking activity in the off-season. Many gardeners will put down a spring feed (as do GreenThumb) and this will need activated by watering. No watering, and nothing much will happen. Many of you will have sprinklers, but they are usually in the garage! Get them out and hook them up. Most lawns will appreciate a watering for 20 mins each evening so they stay damp through the night. Daytime watering is of less

value as more is lost to evaporation. Nowadays, you can readily buy a timer for £20 which will automatically turn sprinklers and hoses on and off. In Scotland, our water consumption is paid for in our community charge. In England, typically water is metered and charged for. We are lucky, it’s pre-paid, so why not use it. GreenThumb also have a Water Conserver product which can significantly increase the time water molecules are held in the lawn. It works on a similar principle to products for planters and hanging baskets. There are more details on the website at www.greenthumb.co.uk.

You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society). Alastair Watt

For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with one million lawns being treated, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Forres Highland Games 2018

Colin Manson - Chieftain Forres Highland Games, an annual celebration of traditional Scottish sport, music and entertainment, takes place on Saturday 7th July 2018 in Grant Park in Forres. Proceedings get under way at 12.30 pm with the Opening Ceremony. This year is the 90th anniversary of the first ever Forres Highland Games and with the exception of some of the years during WW2 the Games have been held in Grant Park annually each summer ever since. The concept of the initial 1928 committee known then as Forres & District Amateur Athletic Association was to hold a summer event to promote sports, traditional culture and give the people of the local area a fun day out. Today the Games still promote those values and are as popular and well supported as ever. The official opening will be carried out by this year’s Games Chieftain local farmer Mr Colin Manson. Colin grew up and went to school in the local area and is widely known in farming circles throughout the North of Scotland. He has been a long standing supporter and helper of Forres Highland Games over the past two decades.

During the afternoon the pipe bands will be competing for best march and smartest turnout. The highlight of the afternoon is the Massed Pipe Bands marching around the arena to the skirl do the pipes and swish do the kilts. A sight and sound not to be missed and one definitely for the photo album. There are numerous displays and trade stands, as well as hot and cold food, ice cream and a licenced beer tent. Forres Highland Games are a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Reg Charity No : SC046639). The staging of the Games is only achievable through the dedication of the unpaid hard working Games Committee, volunteer judges and local helpers, and the loyal support and generosity of local benefactors and businesses. Scotland is celebrating the Year of Young People 2018 and in support of this the Games hope to have a local Junior Chieftain in their midst on Games Day. The best of track and field athletes, the “heavies, highland dancers, pipers, grass track cyclists and pipe bands will compete and entertain the spectators in what is sure to be a colourful and enjoyable Scottish highland gathering. Local highland games have over many years been a nurturing ground for developing young athletes who have gone on to represent their country at international athletics meetings such as The Commonwealth Games.

Strange Neeting By Susan Hill Set in WWI, a young officer returns to the Front to find his division almost unrecognisable. His commanding officer is an alcoholic, there is a new adjutant and several of his close friends have been killed. But there is David Barton. As yet untouched and unsullied by war, fresh-faced and radiating charm. As the pair approach the front line, bloodied by the deaths of their fellow soldiers, their friendship deepens. But as the reality of the violence sets in, the men know that they will soon be separated... A poignant novel on human love as war and the pity of war.

The Garden TOM ANGEL IS A GARDEN DESIGNER AND CHARTERED HORTICULTURIST BASED IN AVIEMORE. TOM PROVIDES

This supplies nutrients that will stimulate plants’ roots, without creating lots of lush new foliage. The danger with stimulating foliage growth from mid-summer onwards is that tender leaves get hit by early frosts.

L

ooking out on my garden as I write this, I am enjoying the spectacle of a very happy Clematis montana, a vigorous deciduous climber that is looking great this year. It is funny how garden plants can have good and bad years, and a timely reminder for me not to panic when some of my other plants are not doing so well. It seems that some plants enjoyed the cold winter we had – some internal plant processes actually require a cold winter to stimulate growth and flowering in a process known as vernalisation. Other plants in my garden are not having their finest years, but I am keeping them watered and fed and am keeping the faith that they will come back stronger than ever in time. However, ever-watchful of pests and diseases, I do a daily tour of the garden to keep an eye on any issues that might suggest a deeper problem. I recently made the discovery that rabbits enjoy eating my Rudbeckia fulgida, so that adds to the list of purchases I will not be making again! In the months of spring I happily add nitrogen fertiliser to my garden, in the form of granules and also well-rotted horse manure. However, from July I stop this and will only apply less nitrogen-heavy fertilisers such as bonemeal.

26

Finally, a few tips for your lawn. During the height of the growing season you may find you need to mow your lawns weekly, but as July moves on you will find growth slowing. Regardless, the key rule is not to let the weeds set seed, and leaving a gap of over two weeks between cuts normally means this happens. If weeds set seed they will gradually outcompete the grass plants in your lawn. In times of dry weather, do not forget to raise the blades on your mower to reduce stress on the lawn. (Indeed, it is best not to cut your grass too short generally for the same reason). In times of wet weather, don’t worry too much about not mowing damp grass with your petrol mower. If it needs doing, just cut it – any muddy marks or tears to the grass are only temporary, and unless you’re wanting a super-formal lawn you do not need to worry too much. To find out more about what I am up to you will find me on Instagram or you can follow my blog which you will find at
